That said, the pricing is very high and clearly reflects an emergency-only business model. This company appears to specialize in last-minute or crisis calls and charges a premium for that. They are not a good fit for planned or non-urgent jobs and don't seem interested in work that isn't emergency-driven. If you're stuck and need someone right away, they can be an option--just be prepared for top-tier emergency pricing. 16 years ago Gary replaced my water heater. Today he did it again. I think that many people underappreciate the details in something as seemingly simple as a water heater. Little things like is it facing forward square to the surrounding walls, the joints sweated cleanly and without spatter. They charged what they said they would - which was less than many (It helped that I know about recent building code requirements for water heater installation. Here's the scenario. We got home from work at 6:15 last night to find water running down the driveway. We recently moved, so the garage is full of boxes with all our possessions. I found my 6 1/2 year old 40 gallon water heater leaking all over the garage floor this afternoon which of course was just past its warranty! Sadly, I'm no longer surprised at the relatively short lifespan of any modern appliance regardless of brand... Anyhow, I came across Mills Mechanical and although there were few recent reviews decided to give them a call. I liked that they were local and not another big business chain. Gary answered my call quickly and was already traveling to a job site nearby but said he and his son would be able to come by afterwords. He was very personable on the phone and gave a competitive bid for the heater replacement. So a short time later I received a call from Gary that they were on their way to my home so I scrambled to clear all the clutter blocking in the water heater. When they pulled up to the driveway, he and his son hopped out with tools in hand to start pulling the old unit. Boy were they efficient in swapping in the new Rheem. They were both good guys to talk with as they performed the work and it was obvious they were very knowledgeable in the business. He replaced a boiler for us in August 2012 and circulating pump in October 2012 and after finding the boiler leaking, I called this morning to have him come out to inspect for possible warranty issues before I spend any more money on repairs. He gave me the run-around...first stating that he would "TRY" to come out this afternoon. Realizing it was already 4:30pm, I called again to inquire. Gary said he couldn't come out because he was too busy and informed me to try calling again tomorrow. After I said that it was not good business practice to give a customer with possible warranty issues the run-around - he hung up on me. A written complaint to the BBB is next on my to-do list for today. The boiler may need repairs...and I would be glad to pay for it if the problem is not covered under waranty - but the fact is Mills Mechanical is going out of their way not to stop by to inspect the problem first. read more

I called American Standard Water Heaters and they went out of their way to get me help for an unusual problem that was to be warrantee work. Gary Mills of Mills Mechanical (510) 656-9192 was called by them and I was assured that he could help me when I couldn't get help with anyone else. Gary Mills, the owner, was refreshingly proffesional with a "good bedside manner" to boot. He impressed me with his initial call to let me know that I was scheduled for first thing in the morning and that he had the order. He also called me enroute to let me know he was on his way. When he got there, he removed the burner unit and looked it over. Within minutes, he found the problem and he worked out a solution with the repair. His care and understanding of the problem changed this from being an all day job with total replacement, to taking less than an hour. He didn't mind me watching and engaged in pleasant conversation with a good sense of humor. I am a professional myself and Mr. Mills had me seriously impressed. I might add that this was two months ago and our water heater has worked perfectly ever since. I strongly recommend Gary MIlls of Mills Mechanical for water heater repairs or replacement. I compared several plumbing company quotation and Mills is the most reasonable price with the fully services. I got my installation done in the afternoon. Gary and his son Andrew both are very professional. My original schedule is on Saturday. Since my water heater supplier is not open on Saturday, Gary helped me to move the schedule ahead on Friday and installed everything within an hour. I have managed commercial property for many years and I can say Gary Mill's is "as good as it gets". The comments you read in these reviews are all true. He does answer his cell phone on the first ring and he does get "right over" to help you out with your problem. But even better then that he doesn't BS you. He knows his trade and you can trust his advice. I have an old commercial boiler up on a roof. It was leaking water badly so I thought that it needed to be replaced. In fact, 2 other company's advise me to spend $10,000+ on a new unit. Gary's advice was to rebuild the interior of the unit for under $3,000. He did the work when the restaurant was closed and the unit has been working great every since. GARY IS AN INCOMPETENT FRAUD!!!! He installed my Teledyne Laars boiler in June 2013 - charged me almost $10,000. It broke down twice in less than 13 months!!!!! Gary fixed it the first time it broke down, in January 2014 but when it broke down again July 8, 2014, Gary said he no longer services San Francisco. Frigging boiler only 13 months old and he refused to service it!!!. The boiler manufacturer sent out an engineer, looked at the boiler and told me because boiler was IMPROPERLY installed, the warranty was voided. read more

I have been doing business with Mill Mechanical for over 20 plus years. I've always thought I had a good relationship with Gary the owner. I own a business and I called Gary up whenever I have a water heater issue. But this time around I have an issue and Gary kept promising me that he will be over on this date and on that date. Gary did this to me 4 times. I called him up and said hey listen you keep giving me the go around when are you actually going to come and look at the issue or are you keep going to tell me you will be here tomorrow and not show up. I have never had an issue with Gary before, I am not to sure what is going on. I mean you want to keep your long time customers happy especially if I have been working with his company for over 20 years. Gary told me "you know what we've been super busy and are not able to make it out there" I told him ok, why can't you even give me a phone call to say you aren't coming to meet me? He says "you know i forgot to do that". Gary was not even apologize for missing my past for appointments. Then he says "Well maybe you should go work with another company" I simply said ok. I was shocked because he was always my go to guy for this type of work. It seems like hes looking to make a quick buck here or there rather then taking care of his clients. If you had a problem and another person calls in with a bigger job that person who will pay him more will get his priority first, and then you second making excused on that way.
