I got there with a group of three and the food came out cold and after I ate crappy food I got charged for more than i ordered then the lady gaslight me in to saying it was cheaper that way. When they are bussy there food is cold but the have hot waitresses with big bounda. read more

The individual that they referred to as the manager was EXTREMELY rude & unprofessional. Is she racist? Does she have an issue with black people or something? She didn't talk to any of the other people in my group the way she was speaking to me & the person that was standing right next to me. After reading the reviews we almost didn't stop!!! The staff were very nice and gave great recommendations. My husband ordered the corn beef hash and well done toast and over light eggs. I ordered over light eggs, hashbrowns, and crispy bacon. Everything was spot on coffee was nice and hot. Very flavorful highly recommend breakfast. On my way home from the Sturgis bike rally I stopped into Millstone for breakfast. I was refused entry because of my dog. I am a disabled veteran with a service dog. I showed the lady the paperwork on the dog, but she didn't want to believe it and when I called the police and the police came to help she still didn't wanna believe it even though the police officer told her that it was a legit service dog. I don't know if it was because I was in Sturgis and I had a shirt that said so or if it was the fact that I was wearing a hat that say I served. Either way she was obnoxious, rude, and abusive. She further refused to abide by the standard set by the ADA on the official website. She refuse to even look at it. read more

My son and I stopped in while visiting Spearfish. I was a little hesitant because of the overall rating it currently has been given. We walked in and were greeted and sat down. I ordered steak and eggs. While we waited the server kept our drinks filled. When the order came they had accidentally cooked my eggs to scrambled. When I let the server know she was very friendly and apologetic and reordered them for over we easy. They came out pretty quick. Hey we are all human and not robots. Not gonna take a star for a mistake because it was corrected quickly and with a smile. The steak was cooked perfectly and exactly how I ordered. Hash browns were golden and crunchy on the top. Again exactly how I love them! Toast was perfectly cooked and buttered. I have 0 complaints and I have been craving the steak and eggs and hope to get back over there soon! read more

The owner is very rude. Blames the customer for everything if something isn't right. Read her responses to criticism on google. IF you give them a negative review, she bashes you in response. Food is mediocre. Only bright spot is the assistant manager Gabe. Perkins is better and isn't harsh to criticism. Just a normal mom and pop diner with the most horrible owner! Reminds me of a Coco's, Spire's type of coffee shop / restaurant. Food was good. Chicken fried steak was 7 out of 10. Tasted a little burnt but still good. On a separate plate too. If you're ever in Spearfish, stop at this place! South Dakota home cooking at its finest. Great soup and salad bar and very friendly service. It's the place that South Dakotans go, and that's a stamp of approval that not every place in a tourist area gets. Get the "Pride of South Dakota," it's a steak that's top tier. We stumbled across Millstone Family Restaurant while trying to find a breakfast joint in the area. I'm really glad we decided to give the place a try even though the three-star rating worried us initially! The wait staff were all cheerful and more than happy to engage in conversation with tourists and locals alike. They were attentive to our needs and made sure I had a plate of lemons for my water--I despise the taste of tap water at most places and the lemon helps with that. They made sure my boyfriend's never ending thirst for coffee was also quenched! I'll admit, I'm writing this review WAY late so I can't recall exactly what the menu items we ordered were, but I did snag some pictures of our food. While the caramel roll (which came recommended) was decent, the pancakes were the true winner. I am not usually a pancakes type of person--I'm more of a savory dish person--but the pancakes here were the darn fluffiest, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth pancakes I've EVER had!!! So if you're unsure of what to get, do yourself a favor and DO get the pancakes. You won't regret it! All in all, this place is like any other small town restaurant--a place where the locals gather to relax, enjoy some good ol' comfort food, and exchange witty banter. In researching this restaurant, I saw they advertised a private meeting room. When planning a family gathering for breakfast follow a wedding in the community with family in attendance form Minnesota, North Dakota and Montana, this appeared to be a good option. Called the restaurant and spoke with the manager (a very snippy, unpleasant person who I hope was just having a bad day), I was informed that they did not have a private meeting room and if they did, they did not take reservations. Pathetic customer interaction by someone representing this business! None of our family will step foot nor spend a dime in this establishment! read more

Family run Diner with 2 locations- this one was in Spearfish. Stopped in on my down the canyon headed to Deadwood. This is a good size resturant with tables and booths. They run daily specials as well as a lunch menu. They have typical diner food, burgers, chicken, steak country fried steak a nice salad bar. The salad bar is attended and kept full and clean- thats a plus !! Lots of items plus some soups. Recommend getting. We opted for Friday fish special (cod) and countey friend steak. The fish is either baked or fried, plus bonus you can receive seconds if you wish. The country fried steak was super tender and nice gravy on it. Onion rings are super good. It appears sometimes they run out of menu items, as the Baby back ribs were out of stock and no baked potatoes. They do have baked sweet potato- yummy good. The staff and service was above average. Everyone was nice and helpful. They evn allow you to mix sides on dishes. So just ask if you dont see it, I am sure they will try to accomodate. Check them out next time you in town. read more

This a "zero stars if it were possible" review. Got country fried steak as a takeout. Got it home...it was burned. And sides were mashed potatoes and...pea. Gross, canned, flavorless mushy peas. Which they put in with everything else, and it all just stunk. Im not a terribly picky person, and I was really hungry, but I took one bite, and I threw the rest away. My mother got a hamburger steak, but they forgot the gravy, and sent the wrong salad dressing. Part of the f me has to wonder if it was on purpose, because I don't know if they could have gotten it much more wrong. Update: the wheat toast ordered on the side was ALSO burned. This place is amazing! Everything I've eaten here over the years has been delicious. In the afternoon/evening they have a salad bar that all the goodies! This place was fairly highly-rated and near to both where we were staying and where we were going, so the location was perfect. We were relieved to see staff wearing masks and were happy to be seated right away, tucked into the back corner, which made us feel as though social distancing was also being implemented, another sigh of relief. But those sighs came a bit too soon; a few minutes before we were ready to leave, a table of 12 was set up directly next to our table. There was not even close to six feet between us and them, it was more like 16 inches. We quickly finished our meal so we could beat a fast retreat. The food was decent (Mom's waffle looked fantastic and I loved the little bit she shared with me) though two of us had overcooked scrambled eggs. My guess is that they were trying to melt the cheese we asked for but left it cooking to long in trying to get it to melt properly. This easily could have been a five-star experience, but the burnt eggs and close quarters were definite demerits from the meal. read more

The hotel next door where we were staying recommended this place. I have to say that the Millstone left a lot to be desired. On the plus side, the wait staff was fine and the prices were fairly reasonable but probably a bit high considering the fact that the food here really isn't very good. Saw a few truckers in the place so we figured it was going to be ok. But.... we both ordered the meatloaf special and it was really pretty terrible. Apparently, they stuck a slice of meatloaf and a scoop of mashed potatoes in a microwave and that was that. The food was barely warm and not tasty at all. Portions were pretty skimpy. We got into Spearfish somewhat late so didn't really have time to look on Yelp to see if there was anything better in town. I like my eggs sunny side up at home but on the road I order over easy because I end up with runny eggs if I order sunny side up. I ordered over easy and the yolks were hard so maybe I will order scrambled in the future. I've been eager to try this place because it always seems to be packed so I figured the food must be awesome. We went a little before 10 this morning and just missed the crowd, so we were excited that we didn't have to wait. Upon walking in, neither hubby or I was greeted. No, hello...good morning...welcome...how are you two, nothing. All the lady said was, "It's two of you?" We said, yes. She sat us at our table, took our drinks and left. Never introduced herself or said she was our server, no introductions from anyone at anytime, no nothing. We both ordered breakfast items, Corn beef hash and biscuits and gravy, which mine and my Hubby's ( I tasted his too:) was very good. That's why I rated them with three stars. But we both felt uncomfortable and unwelcomed the entire time, and because of that we will not be coming back to this restaurant. So I cannot personally recommend this place. read more

This place is awful. the worst experience I've had at a restaurant. The food was undercooked and the server said that's how they cook things there, "the cooks are weird like that." Then the manager said we were rude for complaining. it was such an odd experience. I work with a government ran food program and this would fail any safe serv test. Food needs to meet temp and safety requirements. Just awful. read more

Salad Bar needed a refresh, the Chicken parm tasted like it was fresh out of a can. I would have done better (and cheaper) to buy a Stoffer's and use the microwave in the room. I've been frequenting The Millstone since around 2005, way before I had a family of my own. It's pretty much a staple in our community if you ask most locals, and I've never had a bad experience there. Until today. My daughter, who is 10, has been going there with me since she was in my belly and has never once acted up in a restaurant, let alone The Millstone. Well, on this visit, and for whatever reasons a child might have, she happened upon the salad bar while I was talking with friends, and mixed some of the potato salad in with another food item. Now, had I noticed her doing this, it would have ended very abruptly, and she would have cleaned up whatever mess she made. But, I didn't see it happen. Instead, what I do see, is the manager Gabe, aggressively snatch a spoon out of my daughter's hand, get in her face looking all kinds of pissed off and tells her (with controlled rage) "this is NOT necessary!" Then storms off into the back with one of the containers. My daughter just stands there, in shock, before running through the restaurant and into the bathroom, sobbing uncontrollably. I 100% understand that she should have known better. However, it is not her fault that I wasn't keeping an eye on her. All that aside, a manager of an established, local restaurant should NEVER get up in a childs face and scare, and embarrass the piss out of them for doing what she did. I approached Gabe and very colorfully expressed my feelings about the way he just treated my child. And all mr. Gabe could do was yell at me and defend his actions in front of his staff and a restaurant full of people. He is a 100% unprofessional, pathetic excuse for a manager. One female member of his staff, who's name I dont care to know, could also use a lesson on how you treat customers. Especially loyal customers that have supported your business for more then a decade. Gabe, you have absolutely no business being a manager at an establishment where children frequent. You could have calmly approached my child and asked her to stop what she was doing and/or simply brought it to my attention so I could handle it. What you did was completely out of line and uncalled for. Please, parents, when you go to The Millstone, do not let your children out of your sight for a second, they may just leave there in tears. I'm extremely disgusted with The Millstone staff and my experience today. read more

The food was okay. I ordered the Celebration Skillet. The ground beef was a different protein than I'm used to in a skillet (not chorizo, for example), and the dish was underwhelming; very little seasoning. The bell peppers and salsa gave this dish its flavor. The sourdough toast was really good, though; some of the best I've had. Maybe I was just that hungry, I don't know. However, the service was great. I don't recall the girl's name who served us, but she was really attentive and sweet. My husband tried two of their pies: pecan and apple. Both looked amazing, and I tried a bite of the pecan. DELICIOUS. One of my biggest complaints with this place was another staff member behind the bar area. She was SO LOUD and talking about CRAP the entire time we were there. It seemed like she never shut up. Even the other girl she kept talking to wasn't saying much back, and this bimbo couldn't take the hint that no one wanted to listen to her motor mouth. Seems like no one has ever told her to just shut up and do work; customers don't want to listen to her talk about her daughter's changing body, her exercising (or lack thereof), her taking restaurant food/ingredients that were supposed to be trash according to another staff member, etc. Management, please take a moment to discuss with your staff what is appropriate behavior at work and remind this adult of what an "inside voice" is so as not to disturb paying customers. I can't tell you how many times we looked in her direction hoping she'd be intelligent enough to realize our attention meant she was disruptive from across the restaurant. Fantastic home cooked breakfast food. It was a relief getting able to find a breakfast place opened in the evening after eating pizza for lunch and feeling like I needed something not super greasy for dinner. It's kind of tough to review a breakfast place, but I'll just say it tasted great and if I'm hungry when I pass through again I will definitely come back. read more
