Today Nov 3 2025 My wife and I went to eat at Samanthas Hometown Grill in Millton NC. One of the…read moreprimary reasons we went there was because there were several different Hoagies on the menu. I ordered the Roast Beef Hoagie. My wife, a retired restaurant consultant and food critic chose what she expected would be far more simple...a bacon, and egg, sandwhich. My expectations were simply a good hoagie, such as : A classic roast beef hoagie typically contains thinly sliced roast beef and a combination of cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions on a long, fresh hoagie roll. Common condiments include mayonnaise, mustard, or horseradish sauce. We also ordered a side of french fries. After 20 minutes of looking wearily at a plethora of dangerous looking wiring McGievers, our food arrived. My wife had an adequately prepared sandwhich, the French Fries were hot and tasty My Hoagie, and this sadly is true, consisted of chopped up bologna on a sub sandwhich roll, nothing else . I stared at it while I ate the Fries. I do not eat processed meat, and did not endevour to taste for fear of chemical inbalance. I have seen that particular meat before. It was at the nearby Piggly Wiggly labeled Roast Beef Bologna. I actually like real Roast Beef, I realize my mistake was expecting an actual Roast Beef Hoagie

We sat outside and enjoyed the scenery. It is a beautiful location right next to the River District. There's a lovely park, splash pad, and playground right along the Dan River. We were so stoked to eat right there. The interior of the restaurant was so fun. We loved the decorations. Books everywhere! The server was ok at first. But when we were done, I did not like how she presented me the check. She just quickly flashed me an amount on a screen, and then hid the screen. I asked if I could pay cash and she accepted it but did not bring me a check even then. We ordered 3 burgers that sounded really good. Such a disappointment. The burger meat in each was shaped perfectly and was as hard as a hockey puck. They appeared to be cooked medium but the meat was tough and gristly. I have no idea how they got all the burgers the exact, uniform hockey puck shape. They must be like those frozen ones you can get at Costco. But $17.95 for a frozen hockey puck? At one point, while my kids were telling me how gross the patties were, while my husband and I told them they had to eat them to go play on the playground, I flagged the server down and asked what type of meat it was. She said beef. However, it did not taste like beef. Thank goodness for all the toppings because if they were plain burgers, they would have been inedible. We were so hungry though so we ate what we could. Notably, the buns also tasted cheap like they had just come out of a stale grocery store deli bag. The seasoned fries, sweet potato fries, the homemade ranch and ketchup, and salad with homemade vinaigrette were ok. After we left, I added up what we ordered again and realized she must have charged me an extra $12 to swap out a veggie patty for a beef patty. I was not told there would be an upcharge so felt a little swindled, especially with how she presented the check. I wish I had kept the veggie patty though, because it probably would have been better. Also my kid who had said the burgers were so gross puked right after we left and immediately felt much better and enjoyed 2 hours on the playground. My other kid was jealous of the other one puking. Like you can't make this kind of stuff up. This spot has so much potential. I would honestly hope to visit again just to chill outside but would not ever eat the burgers.

After ordering, it took maybe 5 minutes to get our food which felt decent for the fresh food! There was a steady flow of to-go orders so it seems to be a popular spot. I ordered the Popper Topper Burger, although I do get the jalapeños on the side. I was expecting a little bit more to be honest. It was cheesy and delicious, but the patty itself was lacking any flavor. This was shocking because the menu described it to be "Cajun seasoned" but it felt very plain. The fries were my favorite part by far!!! Unlike other places, this had plenty of toppings. Normally, once you eat the top layer the underside is dry. Not here! I was covered in cheese sauce by the end of the meal. If you're in the mood for some really good fries, definitely check it out!

This location of Big Burger Spot is tucked away by a dingy looking gas station, in a parking lot…read moreyou'll almost miss as you drive past the adjacent Walmart entrance. While the exterior is a far cry from the "vibrant patio" the restaurant description promises, the interior opens into a clean, bright space, which is more spacious than one might expect. On the front counter you will see an artistically designed menu board, depicting the many creative offerings available here. When I invited my coworkers to join me here for lunch, 2 immediately began ardently affirming my choice, regretful they could not join me but promising I would love it. In this moment, vague memories of them talking about this "really good burger place at the gas station" for months on end began to come back to me, as I realized they had been indirectly recommending it for a while. On the other hand, my 3rd coworker, who was in a separate room and had not heard their high praises, told me that it was "overrated" and "fine but not that special." Lol. Needless to say, I had absolutely no idea what to make of it all when I arrived. When I walked in, the woman behind the counter asked if I had ever been there, before patiently walking me through the various sections of the menu and helping me pick something out. I settled on the Popper Topper, which promised Cajun spices and fried jalapeño coins, among other various toppings. At its smallest size (big), it only cost $10.99. I also ordered bacon and cheddar fries. My initial impressions upon receiving my food (quite quickly, I might add) is that 1) the restaurant's name is perfect and 2) this is a very good quantity per dollar and an absolutely absurd calorie per dollar meal, especially in 2025. For right at $20, I got a huge burger and enough fries to satiate 2-3 people. I cannot fathom what the larger burger sizes look like, much less who could possibly be ordering them. The fries were everything I could have asked for -- crispy, salty, and with a very generous amount of both cheddar sauce and bacon (the perfect amount to have sauce on every bite but not be soggy). The burger was good, and definitely satisfied that primal craving for salt and fat that we all carry with us from hunter-gatherer days gone by. However, I wouldn't say it was particularly spicy, nor did its flavor deviate significantly from any generic burger I could order. Don't get me wrong, it was still delicious, but I was a little disappointed. I think that the fried jalapeño coins are breaded a little on the thicker side, which somewhat mutes the spice and slight acidity that they would otherwise add to this dish, to help cut through and brighten the other flavors. All in all, I had a great meal and would totally come back, but I don't think I've tried the "perfect" burger from here yet. Definitely going to recommend this to anyone in the area.
