There is something about gas station restaurants in rural areas that is very special. This place has the absolute best burgers, fried chicken and tater tot's. Unfortunately, Milton's failed today. Usually the food is spot on. Not so this time; mine was cold and my husband's order was incorrect. When we brought this to their attention, the staff said ok and did nothing. They did not offer to remake the food or refund our money. Not the way we expect to be treated at Milton's. First thing's first: Milton's is located in the community of Deep Creek, which today is hardly more than the country store itself plus I think a volunteer fire department and a few other buildings and homes. But it's not really in Lake City and while the drive isn't bad, it's a good ways north of the I-10 interchange which is itself north of Lake City proper. Just making this point so people won't be cross for the drive they'll take to get from downtown Lake City to Milton's. Milton's is a gas station, restaurant, and country store with an emphasis on hunting (they sell a variety of hunting and camping goods, too) and serving many hunters who come to this area. I cannot overstate how rustic the area is: there's not much between Lake City and Fargo, Georgia however Deep Creek and another historic community, Benton, were once larger than they appear today. Benton was the birthplace of Governor Fred Cone, by the way. See? Now you've learned some history today! The food is amazing--this is truly Florida Cracker food and they even have alligator. I had fried chicken, which as a dinner comes with two sides and mine were mac 'n' cheese and fried green tomatoes. All aspects of the dinner were tasty and the fried green tomatoes, a dish many upscale Southern cuisine restaurants make much ado over were perfectly cooked here as was the chicken. The dinner came also with a large (and certainly homemade) biscuit, too. Apparently, aside from the gator (which is fried) Milton's is renowned for its burgers so that's certainly something to try next time I'm here. They also have lunch specials and serve breakfast. Everything is reasonable in price and large in serving portions--probably making them a local favorite with hunters seeking hearty fare. The quality of the food though, I cannot overstate how impressed I was with the quality. The set-up of the restaurant such as it is in the rear of a gas station would make you wonder how good it will really be, especially considering there is no other restaurant around for miles so they probably could get away with being substandard if they wished, but no: the quality here is top-notch. While the interior of the main restaurant area looks a bit worn, they have a very nice screened back porch where you can also sit and listen to the sounds of night animals in the distance. It's a very serene experience that will make you think of camping in Scouts (or for me at least it did). Highly recommended. read more

Just a few short miles north of I-10 outside of Lake City right on US 441. I discovered this hidden gem a couple of years ago on a scenic drive with my family, I fell in love the first time I went. It's in a friendly rural hunting area, also doubling as a campground and grocery store since there is nothing else(literally) around. It is secluded but they are very kind to strangers. They mostly serve farmers, foresters and hunters, so the food is down home southern cooking at its finest, the portions are hefty and the price is more than affordable. Their double jumbo burger is simply unbeatable. My wife loves the flounder. on the weekends I always get whatever they've barbecued and I'm always glad i do. you won't find better fried okra. If they have any banana pudding left and you still have room, get it. The sweet tea is always sweet. If I lived any closer to this place I'd be wearing a different pant size. As I typically do, I looked to Yelp to find a place for lunch on the road. I hate going to chain restaurants. So that's how we found Miltons country store. As others have said, it doesn't look like much. You come through the store to get to the restaurant. You order at the counter. Food is hot and fresh. My friend and I both tried the grouper sandwich. It was very good. You can get the sandwiches ala carter or in a plate. Choice of sides. Fries were ok. Would eat here again. Very popular with the locals read more

The best food for miles around, hands down. Well OK it's the only food for miles, but I don't know anywhere between Lake City and Georgia that does country cooking better. Large portions of homemade southern classics are great for a workday lunch or a weekend trip to the woods. If the weather is nice there is a screen porch out back where you can eat outdoors. Real food served by real people makes eating here a real pleasure. read more

Went out for a long drive. This place is kind of out there but I stopped in based on the good reviews. The restaurant is located in the back of a gas station. Wasn't disappointed. Very authentic country food and delicious. Definitely worth the drive. The money you save on the food will pay for your gas. Stop everything! This home cooking is extraordinary. Had read the reviews on yelp, and was convinced to try it, and we were so happy with the choice. Everything we ate was exceptional, but I've never had fried green tomatoes-so I wanted to try them based prior yelp reviews. I have a new favorite side dish. My husband had fried okra, and said it was some of the best he's ever had. They served it with ranch dressing, which I ended up letting go since the food was so good just the way it was served. Fried chicken was very very good. Yes, it's behind a gas station/campground headquarters. Doesn't look too inviting, but absolutely make this trip. Made my parents drive 16 miles out of the way to eat here on a road trip from IN to FL. This is not a fancy restaurant, but the food is awesome! Biscuits are to DIE FOR. OMG GOOD. BLT was like your Grandma makes, nothing fancy but yummy. Omelet was delicious and whatever my Dad got (looked like the works) was great. Fed a very hungry man all at a very reasonable price. If you get the petite catfish be prepared to work for your meal. They are slightly larger than sardines. Beans are doctored up out of the can Campbell's. The slaw and potato salad were tasty. The place itself is a throwback to an earlier time, good Ole boys are in residence. read more
