Traditional dishes done in traditional ways with a traditional emphasis on fresh ingredients. Thankfully, the restaurant creates food that's on the path to traditional Italian cooking (but not entirely there) instead of the Americanized version of Italian food. The octopus starter with potatoes was a success in simplicity. It was charred fork-soft octopus and vinegary diced potatoes. That's it, but it was oh so good. The fried eggplant polpetti filled with ricotta and placed on a San Marzano tomato pomodoro sauce didn't completely work with its simplicity. It was good but needed one more element to make it pop like a touch of herb or a crispy fry crust. Or maybe the sauce didn't work for me because it was neither sweet nor acidic. Perhaps bright acidic Marzano's would have been better to counter the fat from the fry and cheese. For mains, the handmade orecchiette were almost gnocchi-soft, but were too heavy with bacon and undercooked garlic. But it's hard not to like a raw whole egg yolk in the middle of a pasta dish (or anything for that matter). I can't wait to try a yolk at home with diced eggplant from my garden with pasta. An entrée special was a lamb chop with broccoli rabe and potatoes. The chop was enormous, but don't fear because most of it was bone. It wasn't a rib chop, but some kind of center cut loin chop. As lamb goes, it was pretty mild and it was also charred like the octopus. I don't like cheesecake, but I can't seem to avoid ordering a ricotta cheesecake. We don't get these very often in Los Angeles and the last one I had was in LA but from a New Englander (Scott Conant's Scarpetta in Beverly Hills). Unfortunately, Mima's tempered my joy. It was nice enough, but didn't have the tang and lightness of an exceptional ricotta cheesecake. The strawberries and cream were after thoughts. Also, I would never pick a strawberry from my yard that was as white and under ripe as the one served here. The wine list was nicely affordable and there were also dessert drinks. For two apps, two entrees, one dessert and four drinks, it was pretty good deal that was under $200. Mima has a bistro-like front room with a bar and rustic back room with a small kitchen in between. I think the small kitchen worried me. I played it a bit too safe and wouldn't mind returning and order more adventurously. read more

Trust the good reviews here. I've eaten here at least half a dozen times and have never had a meal short of excellent. The olives are outstanding as is the fried seafood appetizer and the rollatini. The short rib entree is excellent and the orichiette is a personal favorite. The rigatoni with veal bolognese is another great choice. As others have said, the bombolini dessert is a necessity. The service last night was excellent. It can be a bit noisy but the general vibe is a great neighborhood spot with excellent and unpretentious food. Well worth a visit. read more

From the moment you walk into this quaint italian restaurant you know you will have an amazing experience. Its warm and friendly atmosphere is just the beginning.. The owner Johnny and staff are happy to help and take great care of everyone who walks through the door. This is all before you get to the food and wine. Just had lunch here for my first time and wow! I will start with 4 stars, but I have a feeling this one will creep towards five when I eat there again. The dining room was filled at lunchtime. The service was great- the right amount of attention and no hovering. On to the food. I seriously considered getting some wine here because you can get a small serving (3 oz), but decided against it. Don't want to fall asleep at my desk. I noted mostly Italian wines on the menu. The menu includes some nice small plate offerings, four very different and solid salad selected (egg toast? sounds yum!), four or five panino, as well as four pasta selections, and a few solid appetizer selections. Great, crusty Italian bread. The closest in texture and crustiness to the bread available in Italy. And very delicious olive oil to boot! I went with the rigatoni- they used a very simply but overwhelmingly fresh preparation. The pasta was done perfectly, the tomato sauce was tangy and sweet, very chunky. The pasta was topped with cubes of fresh mozzerally and basil. Simple, but perfect. My friend started with the arugula salad, but swapped out the gorganzola for goat cheese. She let me sample- again, very simple, but perfect. This salad had a very light vinagrette, with beets, goat cheese, and candied pecans. The salad was perfect starter size, not really big enough for lunch. I didn't try the veggie panino or veal cavatelle that my friends ate, but they both raved. The only 'eh' part of the meal was the chocoalate espresso cheesecake. I found the flavor good, they clearly used top chocolate, but the crust on top of the dessert was so hard (hard layer of chocoate), that it was difficult to eat both the crust and the cheesecake at the same time. We shared this cake amongst three of us and did not even finish. Oh well. The cappucino was great. I will be back, can't wait to take my husband. read more

We managed to get a table on the spur of the moment late on a Saturday evening. Everything we ordered was delicious - tasty frito misto and an excellent broccoli rabe to start. For entrees, we had orchiette carbonara, which came with the yolk on top (great!) and pasta with cauliflower which was much lighter but equally tasty. The Italian wine list is excellent - ask about nightly specials. On the down side, it was a bit noisy. The service was uneven, but the waiter was aware and kept us updated. Really have no complaints about choosing Mima last night for our date night. First off I'm from Yonkers but discovered this spot in passing on the Irvington strip, it's kind of a hidden gem if you aren't from the town, but it's on Main street that heads down towards the Hudson and I think the train station in Irvington. Everything about this restaurant was very professional starting with the reservation. It's quaint and not too spacious but still has an incredible ambiance. I asked for a more private table on the reservation and they went through great lengths to accommodate us upon arrival. Our server who I unfortunately missed the name of was tremendous and extremely friendly and upbeat (she seemed Italian with brown hair, not sure if that narrows it down). Every person on the staff from her to the bussers to both managers who came over multiple times to check on us made us feel like we were the only ones in the restaurant! Even though it was pretty busy. There's nothing better than that! Oh, and by the way at the end of the night our server took a bunch of pictures for us to remember the evening (it was towards closing time but she was still happy to do it, not all servers are enthusiastic like that at closing time). They started us off with tasty Italian bread and olive oil at a romantic intimate table with a glowing light between us. The restaurant has a nice dim setting to pair with the candle-like lights. We went with a bottle of Pinot Noir and were recommended the meats and cheese platter. This isn't normally something I would order but we did not regret following the recommendation by the manager, the Gouda with Bologna and the Sopressata were scrumptious! For dinner we each had a pasta dish. Mine was the Gnocchi with shredded steak, my girlfriend ordered the Orecchiette with italian sausage. Both were mixed in with sauce/seasoning and different veggie type bits. Really well prepared and very tasty. Nice portions, I've seen bigger plates but after everything we started with and the wine we ended up each taking some home. She liked hers better and I liked mine better, go figure! But they had no problem giving us sharing plates. We went with a night cap rather than dessert and my whiskey on the rocks as well as a Frangelico shot with her expresso were both filled to the brim! You won't get pours like that at a normal bar, that's for sure. Altogether from the bottle of wine, starter, entrees, night cap and overall experience it was $168 before tip... honestly pretty affordable depending on your budget for a beautiful/memorable night out! Came here for my birthday. The wild boar ragu was delicious. All the food was excellent, the wine list was top notch and the seating was surprisingly spacious. It looks so tiny from the outside. The wait staff was good. We had to pour our own wine after the first glass, but it was worth it. Will be back, the whole experience was outstanding. Mima is a cozy, inviting restaurant with a few tables in the front and a few in the back. I ordered the chopped romaine caesar as an appetizer which was rather disappointing - for the price, I would expect more than two anchovies. I get it's not the Olive Garden with massive portions, but for $11, it wouldn't kill the restaurant to give another two anchovies. Anyway, thankfully, the entree more than made up for the appetizer. I got the braised short rib with scallion mashed potato and port wine poached pear. The portion was massive considering the quality of the dish. The rib was wonderfully tender (no need for a knife) and the sauce was full of flavor. The poached pear brings out the sweetness of the scallions that are infused in the mashed potatoes. For dessert I ended up getting the special which was a mascarpone panna cotta that was amazing. read more

One of my favorite brunch spots! The bottomless brunch is reasonably priced. I like that they offer a variety of mimosas and Bellinis and you aren't limited to stick with one flavor throughout your meal. I like to start off with a charcuterie board which is good. The brunch menu is a good mix of brunch and lunch items, and so far has never been disappointing. Staff is accommodating and helpful. I have also gone for dinner which was such as good. Someone previously wrote that they couldn't make up their mind about Mima, and I have felt the same way until recently. I have found that there are so few really nice places to eat that I have have become numb to the things in the biz that should be unacceptable. I have eaten at Mima no less then a half dozen times in the last 6 months. It has been good, fair, good, bad, excellent, fair, fair & bad. OK I lied, I've been there 8 times in the last 7 months, my apologies. Our last experience, 4 people $500 bucks before tip, finally closed the door for me. What put us off the most was asking for a specific table well in advance of our reservation and not getting that table. Now don't misunderstand, I knew we might not get the table we requested, so that would have been OK with us if we hadn't been sat nearby at another table. We expressed our desire to sit "over there" but was told it was reserved. We were a reservation as well but took our medicine. 60 minutes later, "our" table was not occupied. It was set for 2 and with a high chair. 90 minutes later it was set for 6 and as we were leaving it was being sat. Now, here it is a full paragraph into our observations and we haven't talked about food, service, wine etc. You get the picture. When I thought back about our experiences, there was a common theme of average service, a lack of attention to detail to our needs/comfort and food that ranged from average, to good and one exceptional experience. In my mind, I had settled and shouldn't have. I also ignored being rushed previously and another review reminded me of something I had become numb to on as previous trip. I have been to Mima's a million times and every time is just as good or better than the last. The Leggio family knows what they're doing in the restaurant business. My family and I many times made the trip down to Zuppa but once Mima's open, that was it. When I am back in town to visit my parents, no visit is complete without a dinner at Mima's. From the second you walk in till your last bite, you will experience incredible food and service. John makes every patron feel like they are special and that just adds to the whole dining experience. Dining Highlights: This is hard since I've tried everything but I will note a few items that stick out in my mind. Appetizers: The octopus, however it is prepared...yum. My last time was my favorite preparation with black olives, potatoes and a lemon vinaigrette. Not only is the combination perfect but the preparation is to die for. It has a perfect charr on the outside, yet is incredibly tender on the inside which is nearly impossible with octopus. Additionally, you can not go wrong with any of the meats and cheeses. Pastas: Every pasta is absolutely incredible and homemade but my favorites to date are the sweet corn ravioli in a truffle cream sauce and the whole wheat pappardelle with a wild boar ragu. The ravioli is sweet, creamy and salty. It's basically melt in your mouth. My boyfriend still talks about this dish from his first trip. The wild boar is clearly slow cooked forever so the flavor and tenderness is out of this world. Main dishes: The braised short ribs prepared any way. It changes throughout the year but it is always amazing and a total must to order! I've also had some incredible pork chops AND grouper. Desserts: A dinner is not complete without an order of the bombolini. These are the lightest, fluffiest little balls of fried dough you will ever eat. Oh and the homemade caramel sauce is the perfect dipping sauce. To sum it up, this little place is incredible. The food is fresh, delicious and made with love and care. The atmosphere is comfortable, cozy and laid back. And the service is spot on. If you have not gone, go now! I really do like Mima, but every since The Cookery opened in Dobbs, it's kinda hard to be so gushy gushy when it pales by comparison. That said, I have never had a bad meal here and I have eaten at Mima several times. They have several good salads if that's how you plan to start. My wife usually gets the one with the artichokes and I usually get the one with the pecans. For entrees, I usually get some form of pasta, but the best was their veal bolognese. As for dessert, we're usually too stuffed by that point, but the one time I did partake, I do have to say, their bread pudding was a bit of miss. All in all, if you're craving Italian and The Cookery is booked, this is a fine back-up. read more

Wish I could give it 4.5 Went last night for Dinner and Left very satisfied with the Food and some of the service was not too happy with our table they sat us at a tight table by the Front door and it was freezing out ,even thought there where other tables available and I asked for a different table. Enough about that lets get to the food, the 4 of us decided that so many things on the menu looked great so we order bunch of small plates and Shared. We had a selection of cured meats and Cheeses the porchetta was the best I have ever have like Fat and Pig got together and had a perfect Baby! then we had Beet salad Eggplant meatballs, and assorted fried Seafood. Eggplant Meatballs were the best of the Bunch and I don't even like Eggplant. For the Last Course we had 2 pasta dishes. Raviolis stuffed with beets and Blue cheese very good and spaghettini cabanara pretty good but would not order again. Arturo and his staff are extraordinary. Locally and carefully sourced ingredients and master technique and presentation make for exceptional cuisine. The menu changes every two months, a great incentive to leave Manhattan every two months. Delightfully crafted cocktails with handmade ingredients such as cucumber juice are delicious and perfectly balanced. The service is flawless, and every attentive staff member deserves kudos. Clearly, Arturo's passion and commitment to serving clientele is worth leaving the West Village for frequent day or weekend trips. An incredible value for a meticulous wine list and generous portions. How anyone can possibly complain about the price, service, or quality of food and drink is shocking. Thank you, Arturo, for a wonderful 10th anniversary celebration, and for being so welcoming not only to my husband and me, but also our 9-year-old son and 8-month-old puppy. Mima is so remarkable, it made us look into Irvington real estate, and it would be a tremendous leap for us to consider giving up life in the heart of a global city. We took a large party (approx 20 adults + 10 children) here yesterday at lunch. The restaurant is normally closed but opened up for our special event. John helped put together the menu after we tried out a few items ourselves on a separate trip. Apps were the speck, sweet sausage, puglise olives, caciiota di tartufi cheese, red peppers, and a "food that begins with the letter q" (my homage to Spike's White Men Can't Jump). The speck, cheese and olives were standout. My personal fav first course was the sweet corn ravioli, which is really a seasonal dish about now and excellent. Anyone who selected that raved about it. Also, I had the veal involitini previously and recommended it to all -- many had it and it did not disappoint! Others had entrees varying from salmon, to chicken paillard and cavateli with veal bolognese (I polished off my leftovers of that this morning). I took a shot at the wines to pour since I'm not great with Italian wines but both were so good that people asked me after to forward the names: the white was Ribolla Giallla Muzic 2009 and Red was Aglianico del Vulture Bisceglia 2010. The service was very attentive too. I give it 5 stars for the overall experience: assistance and flexibility in prepping our event (again, John was stellar), quality of the food, level of service and very reasonable pricing. read more

I love Mima and eat there often. The arugula salad with the fried artichokes & parmesan is out of this world. I must have had it dozens of times, and it is always incredible. (getting hungry writing this, TBH) I am vegetarian, so there is a lot I have not tried, but my husband and others I have dined there with have enjoyed the rigatoni and other meat dishes. LOVE the eggplant rollatini! So fresh and delicious, and just the right amount of food (it's listed as an appetizer, but I usually have that as my entree, with the salad to start). I went to Mima on a Friday night with my dad to grab dinner and discuss some business and I was a huge fan. They gave us a quiet table near the front window and even though the place was very busy it was pretty quiet. They have a pretty good wine selection and a wonderful menu. The appetizers are great. You can create a sort of tapas platter of various imported meats and cheeses. I had a cavatelli, broccoli rabe, and venison sausage with asiago cheese. The waitress was very attentive and knowledgeable about the specials and how all the dishes were prepared. She was also very cute which I have to give bonus points for.
