In the Spring of 2020 we decided our front yard and driveway needed a major overhaul. After contacting several landscapers, we settled on Mirage. We have used a few other landscapers since our home was built in 1985, but Mirage has been the best by far, from design to implementation, and follow up. Joseph recommended suppliers and went with us on several occasions to select both hardscape and plantings. During construction, a newly installed water line from the street burst at about 4 am. I shut of the main valve at the street and called Joseph in a near panic as we were scheduled to take a trip to Catalina Island in a few hours. He told us to go a ahead, and it was repaired well before we returned home. Turned out the problem was due to a defective batch or pipe adhesive, as verified by another plumber. Very recently (i.e. 5.5 years later) we noticed the expansion gap filler at the low end of out driveway needed replacement. Once the recent rains subsided, Joseph had it replaced for no charge to us. People who visit our home make comments on how nice the drive-way, walk-way and plantings look, and folks just walking by often stop just to look. My wife and I are the original owners of a 25 year old home. Our original landscaping was nice, but becoming dated and large trees unmanageable. Recently retired, we wanted something a little lower maintenance and friendlier on the water usage. After doing extensive research we obtained bids and interviewed four different and well reviewed landscaping companies. We chose Mirage Landscape because of the owner, Joseph Sekander, clearly had the beautiful designs from past projects and was willing to work with what we visioned for our home as well. This was a massive project for both the front and rear yards that required removing all the old colored concrete, patio cover, sprinkler system and eight large trees. Joseph met with us at nurseries, stone and tile warehouses and was always available by phone if we had questions. From demo to filling our beautiful new spa the workers and sub contractors were timely and professional throughout. There aren't enough words to express how happy we were to be working with Joseph. He completely remodeled our front yard and our backyard. At every step, he was incredibly organized, professional, and responsive. From budgeting every phase (and never going over budget or asking for more money once) to accompanying us on our trips to the tile story or nursery to giving us incredible suggestions on design and aesthetic, he made what should have been a stressful experience, instead one that was joyful and exciting. He had so many great suggestions, and if ever there was an issue, he immediately stepped in to resolve. Don't call Joseph at Mirage Landscaping if you want to have an ordinary design. Joseph is innovative and will transform your landscape and your outdoor surroundings beyond your imagination. We trusted Mirage to completely transform our pool, bbq, and our front and backyard. We demolished our entire outdoor area, allowing Joseph to redesign it for us. During the entire process, Joseph was open to new ideas and very responsive to meeting our needs. He has a keen eye to detail and color, and most of all, holds his crew to the highest of standards. Utilizing materials such as the quartzite for the countertop of the bbq, travertine tiles for the ground covering, lighting to highlight certain distinctive features of the landscaping, handcrafted ironwork for the entry gate, we could go on, and on, about the specific materials that were used to make our landscaping project a gem, and definitely, different from others. Joseph ensured that we were always satisfied. His constant follow up even after the job was completed, was greatly appreciated. After what honestly felt like intimidation and a condescending attitude, they left with the final promise of being in touch with a solution. That was the last I have heard from them. We recently completed our back yard transformation with Joseph and his team from Mirage and we are thrilled with the results. Joseph has been an amazing partner through the whole process including collaborating with another contractor we engaged for our deck construction. Despite the challenges posed by the Covid Pandemic, Joseph has been consistently thorough in his follow through and collaborative around design in helping us achieve our vision. When we had a few additional changes, he was very straight forward about adjusting the budget with Change Orders and we ended up exactly where we agreed to. At the inception of the project, he was very efficient in getting the permits processed with the City of San Clemente which at the time was very difficult due to pandemic restrictions. He is super knowledgeable about the plants and along with the landscape lighting, they really make the yard "pop" at night. We feel like we've got a mini-destination resort in the back yard. We recently purchased a property that is closer to friends & family who reside in Newport Coast & Dana Point. We were in the process of getting bids for front yard & backyard landscaping. I made an appointment with Joseph (owner of Mirage Landscape) for Thursday June 4th at 11:00AM and he texted me the day prior to confirm. I have the screenshot of his confirmation just in case he doesn't quite remember. Joseph arrived on time. He, myself & my wife walked the entire property and discussed ideas at length along with providing many detailed suggestions. He also showed us screen shots of another project he did in the past years within a neighboring development. Before concluding our consultation, he stated his architectural fee to do the detailed landscape drawings and said that he would send us a quote for the overall job on Monday (June 8th). Furthermore he stated that upon receiving the quote, should we decide to move forward, he would then come back and provide a more thorough walk through etc. Well, that was almost 3 weeks ago when we met and we never heard a word back from Joseph. No follow up communication whatsoever in any form. This is a very personalized service so it's not like ordering something online with a huge company where the order was simply lost. This is a small business that requires an in person appointment. So in my opinion, it is a conscious decision to not follow up, follow through or make contact of any kind. I gave ample time for him or anyone from the company to get back to us should something have happened and I added thorough details in this review so he knows exactly who this is. I completely understand things that come up, but professional etiquette is to alert the client as soon as possible. And unfortunately, we were not given any consideration. Follow up is the company's responsibility, not the clients. I am not interested in Joseph's honors or awards for Mirage Landscape as much as I am interested in him as a business owner following proper protocol and business etiquette. He dropped the ball on this for whatever reason so I strongly feel that any reply to this review after the fact is only to support his own reputation. I say this because my wife initially found his work on "Houzz" impressive, but had I read the less than positive comments in a couple of the reviews here on Yelp that echoed similar problems with Joseph's lack of follow up, I would've reconsidered booking the appointment and not allowed him to waste any of our time. There are no excuses for his failure to communicate on any level. If you cannot do the job or if it is a job that you would rather pass on, then you should have been professional enough to make another recommendation. How you handled this comes across as you are too caught up personally to extend yourself professionally. I will not refer him to anyone based upon his complete disregard to follow up with us after our in person meeting. ***UPDATE 6/26/20*** Today I received an email from Joseph stating that he was "perplexed" as to who left the review but after some research he realized who it was. He also stated that he emailed the quote on June 7th. His email today included the quote, but it was an original email from today, no forwarding information from June 7th. Joseph, let me be very clear, I did not receive ANY quote from you until today! Not my inbox, nor my spam has had anything from you. Secondly, if that was the case, why didn't you re-forward me the original email & quote you sent on June 7th that would have the original date and time stamp? Instead, you concluded your email by asking me to reconsider my honest review of my personal experience. Nowhere in your email was an apology and you somehow managed to express how important your online image is for a small business like yourself. You should have carefully re-read that before you sent that in writing! In situations like this, you should have issued an apology & given the quote, plain and simple. You continue to come across as being more concerned with your reputation than genuine sincerity towards us and this is not the time for that. What did you do to actually gain us as customers as you stated you've done for others? Understand this, the hard work you say you've done to please other customers we honestly did not receive so no, I will not consider removing the review. I guarantee if you were that interested in the job there would've been appropriate follow up! It's simple, treat people the way you want to be treated. We will not engage in further discussions. This is really a pre-review. When we found Mirage, we were a bit concerned that we couldn't find much 3rd party information about them online. I did lots of reference checking and went onsite to see some of their other projects. We really loved the work they had done for others and the price was relatively reasonable, so we went forward with a project. We're now about 3/4 through our big backyard project in Newport and so far they have been a pleasure to work with and done great work. Having researched a few local Landscape firms, I was impressed with the website and the "preview" review written here. I called Joseph, the Owner to schedule a site visit. He met me on our scheduled appointment date on time and we walked the project together. When asked for a timeline on the quote, I was told within the week. Joseph advised me he would be busy over the coming weeks during his site visit - no worries - but did mention I would have the quote next week. 2-weeks later, no call. I placed a follow-up call this Saturday to Joseph - he quickly answered his cell phone and when I identified myself, he had no recollection of who I was or what I was calling about. Very disappointing. He said he would call me back later that day. To date, no call back. I am rating this business 1-star for its utter lack of follow through and customer appreciation. We honestly don't believe that anyone else could have done the job that Joseph did on our yard! We couldn't be happier with the impeccable craftsmanship and his eye for design. Joseph guided us (and honestly held our hand) throughout the entire process. He has amazing taste and the experience to know what looks good together and what won't. When we were searching for a contractor, we immediately noticed that all of Joseph's work flows together and just looks like one cohesive unit. Most contractors put a pool here, the patio here, etc. that are all separate things. Joseph's work all flows and blends into one beautiful project. We have been told many times by people who come over, that our yard looks like a resort...and we honestly feel the same. Being in Orange County, we are able to enjoy our yard so often and it's really an extension of our home living space. Joseph nailed that as well. I consider him a luxury contractor. He will bring you materials that he suggest straight to your door. He pretty much always knows best, because he has an eye like a designer. I feel like we got a huge bonus of having a true designer as our contractor. On a few materials that we wanted to look at more of, he took hours with us, meticulously comparing materials and taking our opinion into consideration to get the perfect fit that makes us happy but more importantly, flows perfectly with the project. He is a perfectionist, and his work absolutely reflects that. His guys are very focused on quality work. The few times that a small detail might be ever so slightly off, Joseph is very quick to see it and address it...most of the time before we could ever even see it. I believe this is really what sets him apart from other contractors. Instead of trying to fly through a job, Joseph focuses on making it perfect. He takes great pride in his work and treats it like it's his own house! Joseph and his team did an amazing job relocating a 10 foot post in our backyard and wiring electricity to it to then hang beautiful string lights! They also repaired the ground with the surrounding artificial turf to match and extended the planter where the new post was. You would never know it had been relocated! I was so thankful for their willingness to take on this "smaller" job. I really needed the expertise of a professional contractor to do the job right. They were willing to help me out and understood the predicament I was in. (The job was too involved for a handyman, but too small for most contractors to want to take on.) After the job was complete, he saw that the turf in my backyard was in need of some maintenance. So he sent out a guy to with a special machine and sand to fluff up the fake grass and help it look better! And he did it totally complimentary! We moved to Ladera Ranch in 2005 after purchasing a new home in which no landscaping was provided. We searched out a few local landscape firms, received designs and quotes and met with Joseph from Mirage. It was the boom in Socal real estate and in the end we chose Mirage. Why? Joseph worked with us, incorporating our vision and assisting us in making changes to meet our budget yet still maintain a very pleasing result. He also worked with our selection of plants and trees based on allergies ensuring we could avoide planting things that would make us or the pets miserable.
