Visiting Chicago from Seattle and as a bit of a sushi fanatic, I didn't have high hopes for sushi -- but Miru exceeded all my expectations. The fish was some of the highest quality I have had. The decor is nice and clean, though a little odd to be playing French music at a Japanese restaurant. Also a little odd was the hostess promising us a table with a good view since the terrace was closed, and then putting us at a table in the corner with essentially no view. They kept trying to take away our drinks and plates before we were ready as well. Besides the mediocre service, the food was really really good. The Smoke on the River cocktail was nice and smoky. Miso soup was large. I enjoyed the shishito peppers, but they had a bit too much aioli for my liking. The crab crispy rice was yummy, as were the lobster spring rolls. But the highlights were the sizzling mushroom rice and the sushi. The rice is crispy and absolutely delicious. The sushi was extremely high quality. Finally, I absolutely loved the black sesame mochi. The prices are high as you are paying for the view and for the location in the St. Regis, but the food matches. I hope they can work through the kinks in their service. I recommend coming on a nice day to enjoy the terrace views! read more

TLDR: to me, the appeal of Miru is access to some of the best quality of fish in Chicago, dishes with elevated sauces/flavors, and the soft lux atmosphere. When it comes to Midwest sushi, the fish here was on par with the quality you can find on the coasts, albeit at a slightly higher price point. We ordered: the grilled avocado: unique, great sauce and texture, and was served warm--a nice embrace to welcome the rest of the meal bluefin tuna and shiso leaf: this was one of my two favorite dishes of the night. though I usually appreciate my sushi very simple, as to not overshadow the fish itself, the unique flavors and textures only elevated the tuna, not overpowered chutoro: the price is what you can expect for high quality fish in the Midwest... this was worth it. one of the best pieces of nigiri I've ever had. hamachi roll: pretty forgettable, not much flavor. least favorite of what we ordered and wouldn't do so again. miso black cod: honestly would've rather ordered more sushi in place of cod, which was enjoyable, but less exciting or unique in comparison to the dishes above duck yakisoba: uhh so I pulled a HAIR from the middle of my noodles which was definitely disappointing for this type of establishment. I would've said something, but it was near the end of our meal and I was tired and just wanted to go home. all in all, there were several dishes that got overwhelming approval, and a few which were meh for the price. Great cuisine with very attentive service. The place is very fancy with incredible views of Chicago River ( 11th floor of St. Regis) if you can secure outdoor seating. If you don't mind dropping north of $400 for a couple, this is one place you don't want to miss especially if you crave Sushi. read more

This restaurant is one of my new favorites. Most reviews do talk about the views. And yes, if sitting on the deck. Or by the windows, the views of Navy pier and lakeshore are beautiful. especially at night. The St Regis Hotel is gorgeous inside. With friendly kind staff to assist you to the lifts taking you to the 11th floor. The decor in the Muri is bright and modern. I like the sitting arrangement. Comfortable large booths. And tables. Large windows bring natural light. The customer service for me and my parties was excellent. Lovely greeting at the door. Coat service. And seating. I have been twice now over the past three weeks. Both times, our servers were attentive and knowledgeable on all food dishes. Now the food. The dishes are a modern approach to Japanese cuisine . Reading other reviews, I noticed complaints about how the food is not authentic. True, has I read it. It's a lettuce twist. On modern Japanese. I like the food. Trying many small plates. The lobster rolls were one of my favorites. And the duck with noodles. A lovely assortment of fish. Taking your pick on flavors. Best Creme Brule ever. This restaurant is on a higher scale, so prices do reflect this. I feel it's worth the money for that special occasion. read more

We were delighted to have a lunch at this place, because the quality of seafood dishes was high and the bar has good variety of authentic sakes and other cocktail drinks. Service was exceptional, they guide us through the menu and were friendly. About location - it nested on the 11th floor with a cool view on the river and lake. The terrace was closed for dining due to the cold weather, however you're welcome to step outside to enjoy the view or take the photo. Definitely recommend this place, will go again when back in town. read more

I have very mixed opinions about Miru. We went to Miru for a special occasion during Labor Day weekend. The menu is Asian fusion and reminded us of other similar restaurants like Nobu, Morimoto, Roka Akor, etc. The pricing at Miru is one of the highest among the genre, but the food quality was more towards the bottom. Don't get me wrong, the food is still good, but the other restaurants seem to have better tasting food for the same or lower pricing. Our dinner reservations were at 7:30 pm on Friday and by then, they had already ran out of the Tai Snapper appetizer. Ordered the Salmon & Truffle appetizer by recommendation of the waitstaff, but it was just ok. It didn't have much truffle or salmon flavor and just tasted like it was sitting in oil. The Hamachi & Lemon didn't really hit the right notes for us. The Miso Cod was unfortunately filled with large pin-bones, so it looks like prep was done properly. We did get a replacement, but it was not much better and still had pin-bones, but maybe a few less than the other piece. The shining stars of the night were the Smoked Pork Belly Skewer and the Tempura Rock Shrimp. Those two items are the best items on the menu, hands down. We were also not given anything for our celebration, which was surprising for a Lettuce Entertain You restaurant. No free dessert, no free anything, not even a candle. Usually LEYE restaurants take celebrations to the next level. The other thing we cannot forgive is the ambiance. We were lucky they were able to accommodate us in the patio overlooking the river. It was absolutely beautiful. However, the table and railing were COVERED in insects and bugs. Mosquitos, gnats, flies, spiders... literally crawling over everything. I spent the entire night trying to brush off bugs off the table and swat at them flying at me. I have an aversion to bugs and this was a scene made of nightmares. I have NEVER seen this magnitude of bugs at other river-side establishments. It seemed like whatever insect abatement they had was not working at all or maybe they didn't have any at all. read more

Had dinner here on Saturday night and the food was absolutely incredible - it being restaurant we made the experience even better as we were able to try several dishes. Our server was wonderful, a gentleman with dark hair, multiple piercings, and amazing silver jewelry. The host with reddish hair and glasses was incredibly kind and helpful. I am only giving four stars instead of five stars, because the nasty hostess with the shoulder length dark hair is still at the desk. She was as disdainful as ever and unwelcoming. Maybe consider moving her to a less busy day if you're unable to get rid of her. She is absolutely the WORST part of your establishment. read more

another amazing meal in chicago! their unagi (eel) was to die for. so fresh and such a great bite! my favorite roll was the wasabi hamachi hands down. the hamachi was so fresh and the spicy wasabi was the perfect contrast! my friend got the spicy tuna roll and loved it! the view was amazing of the river. they do have outdoor seating which i'd recommend but it was a little wet when we went so we just requested a table by the window! we got a resy and would recommend one too, but it didn't look too overly busy during lunch time! highly recommend to add to your chicago sushi list!!! read more

This is one of my favorite places for sushi on a special occasion. The food here is fantastic (restaurant week). The menu was finely made, I ordered the miso black cod and it was phenomenal, making me like miso again. The edamame was slightly salty, but the make your own sushi was creative, and it felt like i was an elite chef. The dessert, a chocolate silk cake, was delicious ( and I normally dislike chocolate but this was really good). Our server Devin was very pleasant and helpful! I reccomend the shisho fresh NA! The ambiance is very urban and warm. Enjoyed the view of the night skyline. read more

Miru (meaning to look in Japanese) had been on my wife's to go place for a while now. Had tried making reservations about 3 or 4 months ago for October but was told they only accept reservations 45 days ahead of time. Fair enough. I actually kind of like that. We had to reschedule our reservation twice and they were very accommodating for doing that. So Miru, what is all the hype about eh? The food was all in all great. We ordered the eggplant and pork belly skewers. The eggplant was good but I wish it had less sweet and a bit more salty feeling to it. The pork belly while good felt slightly chewy (I'm not going to dock any points on this simply because I have never tried a pork belly skewer before so it could be my lack of knowledge on this). The Japanese cucumber hit the spot. Beautifully presented and well seasoned. We tried the avocado crispy rice; that I think needs work in my opinion. Fantastic attempt to recreate the traditional crispy rice but very very far off from the original. The rice used too seemed like it was not quite Japanese rice (though I may be wrong on this.) The crunch was good but a bit too much. Traditionally, the crunch is good yet not too much; you gotta try the original stuff to have a comparison point. This one's a bit hard to explain. Finally we ordered one garden vegetable maki and one avocado maki both of which were ok in my opinion. Again here, not 100% certain they are using Japanese rice. The star of the evening however was their amazing high balls. Probably one of the top 10 high balls I've had on the planet. The ice they used was a long brick ice that became invisible in the drink (since it was made of crystal clear water and was kept that way) but even as the ice melted, it didn't seem to take away from the strength of the whiskey in the drink. The first sip was almost equal to the last sip (and she took about 30 min to finish the first one) so I am very impressed with the drink. Also has a great open area outside from where you have spectacular views. Will I come again? Hmmmmm, myself I don't think so. I like the food much better at some of the other places I've been to especially the Japanese place in Denver (sorry, won't take the name but you can go through my reviews and figure out which one or dm me and I'll let you know). It was one of those places which has a hype so had to check it out and sorry to say, the hype was not for me. Nevertheless, if you go you gotta have the highballs for sure. read more

Amazing view and the interior design of the restaurant is very nice. I loved the styling and indoor/outdoor set up as it was fitting for the time season. Only downside was the music they were playing did not complement the type of cuisine being served. I'm eating Japanese food, I don't want to hear house music....ftr I love house music and its roots in Chicago. The food was pretty good, visiting from out of town so hard to say how it compares to the rest of Chicago. Not really worth the price but again you are paying for the atmosphere more than anything. Would I go back? Probably not. But, I also don't regret coming. read more

Let's face it... we're coming here for the views! I came with a few girlfriends to celebrate on a weekend afternoon. We sat outside - it was a sunny day but because the restaurant was on the 11th floor next to the river, it was actually quite chilly, but the Miru staff was attentive and gave everybody fluffy blankets to keep warm. Our server was friendly, attentive, and delivered exceptional service - nothing to complain about and definitely made sure we had a pleasant experience, so I would like to commend that. This being said, I would not say that there is good value for money at all... Prices were extremely high for what the food were. That was not surprising to me given that it was at a fancy hotel with great views, but I couldn't justify giving 5 stars based on this reason. read more

This is a place you must visit if you're not particular about the authenticity of Japanese cuisine or if you're unfamiliar with Japanese food. It's perfect for those looking for non-traditional Japanese dishes. The sushi omakase is amusing, offering akami, yellowtail, and salmon, which you could easily find at a Japanese market for ten dollars, but here it costs $68. The yakisoba, typically a stir-fried noodle dish, is served as a stew in oil in a hotpot. However, the stunning views and ambiance, along with excellent service, make up for the novice skills in the kitchen. I don't feel the need to return. read more

My first experience at Miru was during the Chicago restaurant week. It was late dinner, the place was dimly lit with great ambience, and I really enjoyed my experience then. Yesterday, I went for lunch on the patio since it was a sunny day. I wish I had not gone cause it ruined my view on Miru. 1) the smell: As soon as we stepped out of the elevator on to Miru's floor, I could smell pungent fish smell. And sure enough, it was on our cocktail glasses and water glasses (I could smell the fishiness before I sip the cocktail. So it was a rough start. 2) the cleanliness: Then there were the plates.. they were filthy with pollution dust. We had to wipe them with our napkins (think drying a plate after the dishes). The server changed plates after the appetizer but the new ones were still filthy, if not more. 3) the fish: we ordered several signature makis and all the meat were chopped. I understand that it's a maki and if I wanted whole piece of fish, I should've ordered sashimi or sushi, but still, I am shocked that $34 special maki is all chopped meat.. Lastly, be aware on what you wear. Their napkin sheds lint like crazy, and it will get all over your clothes. Sorry, I'm not going back. read more

It's located inside the St Regis hotel, so the ambiance is great. Food is decent, but the only downside is the price. It's definitely overpriced and not for people that are looking for authentic Japanese sushi/food. It's mainly for business travelers and if you are craving for Japanese food around the downtown/Loop area. Service is good overall. read more

GORGEOUS from the moment I stepped off the elevator. Some of the best views of the city! Had a fabulous service experience with the fellas behind the bar; always enjoy a solid accent, delivered with a smile. The food is scrumptious, wish the fried rice with avocado spread was bigger. A casual girls' night at Miru. We tried the chicken karaage, the Japanese eggplant skewers, crispy rice tuna, shrimp fried rice, as well as the crème brûlée. I personally loved the chicken karaage and the eggplant. While placing one of our orders, our server humorously asked if it was our final order for the night. Although it wasn't, we couldn't help but laugh, and we'll definitely be back for more culinary adventures that Miru has to offer. read more

This new sushi restaurant's view is probably the best in the city. Today's weather didn't allow for patio dining but I wish it had. The flat iron steak was well cooked, tender, and accompanied by miso soup, salad, and rice. The salmon avocado maki was fresh and balanced. Overall I enjoyed the food but it didn't beat the likes of sushi-san or any other river north sushi spot. It's the view and location in the St. Regis that make it worth a fancy visit. read more

First the space. A magnificent view of the city and lake. Located at St.Regis it's right where you want to be. The food was pretty spot on but we also had a great server, her name is Eso, OMG that sake pairing We asked her to take charge of our courses and she did not disappoint! Was like a modified omakase! Everything about this restaurant was amazing. The food was delicious, beautifully prepped and the staff was friendly. I loved the amount of vegetarian options they had. It's typically hard to find many (vegetarian) options at a Japanese restaurant so I was thoroughly impressed, even though I do eat meat! After coming here a few times, it's now my new favorite spot in this neighborhood for dining with a view. This LEY restaurant is beautiful and their upbeat staff are attentive. I've enjoyed most of their dishes and haven't had one I didn't like yet. Crispy rice is always a hit and their tuna crispy rice is delightful. My favorite is the bluefin tuna & crispy shiso. Their mushroom sizzling rice is also a nice savory and filling dish. read more

Gorgeous rooftop, definitely one of my favorites. Had a great experience here, staff was so friendly and accommodating with providing our party off-menu food they can prepare for our vegetarian party. The views are amazing, you really can't have a bad seat anywhere. We enjoyed their avocado crispy rice and edamame. Drinks are great, the J G&T was refreshing. We've been looking forward to this experience for a while! Went here for my sister's birthday and also caught some fireworks at navy pier as well. They have multiple terraces to enjoy the views and have some drinks. Sometimes they are nice enough to seat you even if you don't have reservations. The food was very rich and high quality. The highlights of the meal would be the black miso cod, which was so buttery and just melted in your mouth. The filet mignon was also very tender but would steer towards their seafood. The nigiri and sashimi was very good our favs would be the salmon nigiri for sure. The yellowtail was alright but the chef's platter had a variety to get a good taste. Would avoid the fried rice, it was too burnt on the bottom for my liking. The service wasn't the best here, would have to wait forever to see our server and having to wave down the busboy on multiple occasions to put in an order or request something. Their cleanliness also needs a bit of work. Touching the plate with their hands and fingers all over while setting it down, literally holding the plate by the middle wasn't that sanitary. Not to mention the water smelled funky. Would recommend bottled sparkling water. read more

Despite being dressed appropriately in a suit, I was informed that my identification was not acceptable. A must try for any tuna lover. Crispy pork fried rice - Our whole table agreed this was a banger. Unique fried rice, had a risotto-like consistency, which was a totally unique experience. Also might be the greatest fried rice I've ever had. We sat indoors, and to get the whole experience Miru has to offer, you should probably reserve an outdoor table to take in the city views. I had a fantastic experience with friends at Miru for Restaurant Week! The service was excellent and attentive, and everything on the Restaurant Week menu was delicious. This is the best sushi I've had in a long time. The "DIY" sushi roll course was so fun; the hamachi, tuna, and salmon were all delicious -- fresh and not fishy at all. Cocktail prices are steep, and I'm sure the regular menu prices would make my eyes glaze over, but the Restaurant Week menu was a great value. We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch at Miru in Chicago! We started with some hot sake and perfectly salted and broiled edamame before diving into the lobster spring rolls -- crispy, rich, and addictive! These were my favorite part of our meal! The unagi nigiri was melt-in-your-mouth perfection, and the king salmon roll was absolutely delicious!
