This is by far the best coffee in Davis. That said it is not at or near the level of Sacramento area elite coffee like Temple Roasters or even Naked Lounge - but very good for Davis. It is warm and inviting with a handful of tables up front for reading the paper and talking while the crush of UCD students cram in the less comfortable tables in the back and camp for hours - if you are over 24 avoid the back tables. Coffee drinks are good, scones are great (don't miss the peach scone), and service is as friendly as I've seen anywhere - truly the baristas are always happy and engaging. In my opinion, Davis doesn't really have that much going for it but wow this cafe's adorable. I was really unfamiliar with all the drinks here and didn't know what kind of roast they use so I asked my barista what her favorite drink was. She recommended a drip coffee with a shot of espresso with a smidgen of hazelnut vanilla and man was she on point. The drink was GOOD. However, when my friend asked her barista for a recommendation, he was kind of indifferent and didn't really make a suggestion so it really depends who you get if you want one. The tables and counters are all kind of squished together so the place does feel a bit cramped. There are a ton of people studying or doing various things here so good luck if you have to get up and go to the bathroom or something. All in all, Mishka's a solid coffee shop. read more

Mishka's is a quiet, cozy, and unique cafe. I mainly come here for the scones. I enjoy eating the peach scone with passionfruit glaze. It doesnt have an overpowering sweetness and it has a soft texture if it's warm. I also tried the blueberry scone with vanilla glaze and it's just as good. It's a gentle hint of blueberry wrapped around a warm light sweet vanilla glaze. I love it!!!! It's also a perfect place to study. There's a little bit of noise but not too much. I usually study in silent rooms but I with minimal sound and relaxing ambiance, I can get work done. The only con is the wifi. This place is the epitome of Davis. Customers are mostly students, professors, and locals. You get the hippies, cyclists their spandex, and one old man rocking that wears a cotton hat with a cardboard brim taped to the hat. The old guy is pretty cool. And of course, the coffee is fair trade and organic. The divided seating provides room for conversation and studying. The benches get uncomfortable if you've been there for a while. But I guess that's another strategy for keeping you awake and getting you to leave. Coffee here is good and so are the cappuccinos. If you're lucky, you might even see some rare latte art. As a party of 1, I could always find a seat with table space and an outlet. 2 or more people, you may have to keep an eye out for potential open tables/people leaving to swoop a decent table in close proximity to the outlets 4) The drinks. Decent selection of standard coffee and specially drinks. Slightly on the pricier side, but they have a stamp card! 5) Air conditioning. Davis summers are hot, need I say more. If you're looking for quick cup of coffee or spot to chat, this is a good place for it. If you're planning to stay for 2+ hours, the one downside is the parking situation. His peach scones with passion fruit icing is beyond exceptional. probably not available til spring/summer but til then she/he makes a blueberry scone with vanilla icing which is also delicious. Came here to study once and it was super cute! Its one of those tiny places in Davis that you might miss if you aren't looking hard enough. The coffee is decent. Get the wifi info from the cashier when you order (they give you a password). The staff is friendly and there are a lot of menu items to choose from. I personally did not like the seating though as it was super crowded when I went there. Barely any room to spread out your stuff during study season much less place notes next to your laptop. Highly suggest scoping out and finding a seat before ordering in the case that its crowded when you go as well! Took 13 minutes for 2 coffees to go the iced lavender latte was served with 3 ice cubes which brought the iced coffee to a room temp not cold coffee. They served 5 customers that came after me before me. When I mentioned that, he stated "Oh we're very busy" that's no excuse for serving customers that came after me before me. Mishkas is a great place to study, to hang out, to go on a date, or to do all three in the same day. I can't speak to the drink selection because I'm not a fan of caffeine or sugary smoothies. The food selection is not bad, with plenty of cookies and desserts to choose from and some breakfast options like egg-and-sausage sandwiches or ham-and-swiss croissants. Odwalla bars too. Nice atmosphere so if you can catch someone taking a break from studying, you can often have some great conversations. Of course, most people here are studying all the time, so that's often difficult. But space is reserved in the front for people who aren't studying or using laptops, so you can chill and be friendly there. One thing that sometimes sucks about this place is the music. It's often distracting or far too loud, so you'd better bring a damn good pair of headphones if you want to concentrate (which I always do). Another is the fact that the free Wi-Fi only lasts for two hours (you can of course ask for another password) and it's sometimes unacceptably slow (especially when the place is packed). But overall, the vibe of this place is nice and it's a good place to work or chill out. read more

I recently entered Mishka's and ordered a macchiato. The arrestingly pretty barista turned her laconic gaze on me and, in a sullen and perfunctory tone, asked, "You don't want the Starbucks kind, do you?" With characteristic wit, I responded: "No. I would like a regular one, please." My charming parry seemed to do worlds for her mood: with countenance freshly lightened, she proceeded to complain a bit about "less understanding" customers who "order a macchiato and expect a caramel latte." I happily commiserated with this languid beauty, who, galled by the disgusting foolishness of the many, conjectured that Starbucks had destroyed the American coffee palate, and now sought to redefine our coffee vocabulary for its own pecuniary benefit. I did not disagree, and referred her to Book II, Chapter 5 of Machiavelli's Discourses on Livy. I graciously offered a summary of the chapter, but somehow my learned discourse failed to pique her interest. She looked at me with that mix of incomprehension and dismay familiar to all teachers, and with that I sat down and waited for my drink. The macchiato itself was really quite good, as was the dark chocolate truffle I ordered with it. The cappuccinos and brewed coffee are of similarly high quality, and the dessert case is always full of tasty and somewhat unusual goodies. In addition to the more familiar scones, bagels, and muffins, one finds baklava, crunch cake, macaroons, and other interesting options. Everything is made and supplied by local outfits, but don't let that scare you off: most of it is good in spite of the fact that it is made in Davis. Beyond the coffee and baked goods, there is still more to recommend Mishka's, not the least of which are the baristas. It suffices to say that this is a nice-looking and very friendly group. Those with laptops will be pleased to find a number of accessible outlets and a reliable wireless signal; those with books will be pleased to find large tables; those with sensitive ears will be pleased to find soft music and general quiet; those with a social conscience will be pleased to find organic and fair trade coffee; finally, those with a drinking problem--or exams to grade--will be pleased to find bottled beer. Given all these virtues, and given the perplexing dearth of options in Davis, Mishka's is consistently and deservedly crowded. We stopped in to Mishka's while visiting Davis one day recently. We were looking for a good place to savor the cupcakes we had just pillaged from Let Them Eat Cake. http://www.yelp.com/biz/let-them-eat-cake-davis We chose Mishka's over any other area coffee shop due to their location and great looking coffee photos on Yelp. The other deciding factor for me was that they roast their own beans in house. I figured that was important when trying to find an independent coffee shop in a strange place. Apparently everybody else also chooses Mishka's as a place to spend the day. It's the first coffee shop I've been to that has a separate seating area reserved for people that are NOT doing homework or using a laptop. In fact, those activities are banned from the couple of tables that are located near the front of the store. As someone that actually comes to a coffee shop to *gasp* actually drink coffee, not just sit there and BS, this is much appreciated. Although we observed several rule breakers in the laptop-free section, they weren't bothering anyone. They do have an upcharge on soymilk as seems to be the standard shady practice in the coffee biz. Thankfully the cashier cut me a break on the price unbeknownst to me. A large latte ended up costing us less than a regular. Not a bad deal. The latte came out not looking like anything special. It was just average espresso with some steamed 'n frothed soy plopped in. Not bad by any means. Just nothing to write home about. I know latte art doesn't make a drink taste any better. It just shows that the folks making it know what they are doing. I at least expect to see more espresso tinged milk on top rather than white foamy bubbles. I did notice ABC brand cookies on the shelf so they would be a good stop if you're craving a Vegan dessert in a pinch. Would I come back? This review is about the customer service I just received. I ordered a mint latte, for which the posted cash price was $3.55. They charged me $3.75 for a cash payment. When I asked why they were charging me more than the posted price (after clarifying that I was paying cash), the cashier said "because mint is 20 cents extra." (Which incidentally is also how much extra they charge for credit card payment). Well that's nonsense, because the menu clearly says "MINT latte - $3.55." I told the cashier if that was the case, clearly they should update their advertised prices. She didn't seem to care at all. Not wanting to hold up the line, I moved on and asked another employee if I could speak to the manager. Instead of directing me to the manager, she asked in an unfriendly tone "Why?.." I explained the problem and again, this employee didn't care at all about the issue. 20 cents isn't a big deal - it's the attitude of the employees that pissed me off. The appropriate response would have been to, at the very least, say something along the lines of "sorry, we'll fix the menu" and more appropriately be willing to only charge me the currently posted price. Finally, the first time I went here, their drinks were decent. This time, there was barely any flavor. So all around failure by this place. read more

This place is packed right down to the last seat. I would only go here to just grab something then go. They have some pastries in addition to their coffee drinks, along with a few more interesting selections such as the Jolted Thai (thai iced tea + shot of espresso), the Soul (herbal tea mix + soy milk + honey), Maple latte, and pumpkin spice. My girlfriend introduced me to the their two toned mocha and it was really good! Different from your average mocha. I ordered their Soul drink which is basically a tea latte. After that experience I didn't go back for about six months. I came back recently because I wanted an alternative to Temple (which will always be my favorite, but maybe not my wallet's favorite...) Revised, I'm-grown, I-know-better-now impression: - Stamp card! Buy 10 drinks, get 1 free. - Dependable, affordable black coffee. I always get an iced 20 oz and it runs me about $2.80. - Delicious specialty drinks: the "Soul" is lavender chamomile comfort in a cup, while their two tone mocha and jolted thai get me going when I want a treat on big days! - Hibiscus lemonade. Summer in a cup. So tasty but it's really concentrated so ask for extra ice/more water! - Chocolate chip cookies/any of their cookies really. I KNOW that all they do is microwave the cookies when I ask for them to be warmed up but that microwave is effective because the ooey-gooey chocolate combined with the warm cookie tastes divine. - Apparently their meyer lemon scones and blueberry scones are the only scones that are made fresh. Fresh and delicious. Right when you walk in, you are greeted by a friendly staff. You immediately smell the strong coffee smell (which I love). The barista make delicious drinks. You can tell if they are good if you look at the foam. The foam should be silky smooth (no bubbles). I love it! With that said, I must add that space can be limited and the set up of the tables and chairs inside can make you feel a little claustrophobic. I'm actually claustrophobic, which is why I bring this up. But I've learned to deal with it. I mean, you still have your coffee, tea and baked goods for 2 bucks ish to keep you smiling so accidentally rubbing an elbow once or twice doesn't hurt.
