I wanted something different; no Marriott or stuffy hotel, so I went onto vrbo.com (Vacation Rentals By Owner) and immediately fell in love with The Brighton Beach Bungalows. The reservation process was very easy; email exchange followed by a phone call, and working with Laurie and Ian was incredibly easy. They are a lovely married couple who own the two rental homes, appropriately named the "Sun" and "Surf" bungalows. Upon arrival, we were excited to see that we were about a block off of Ocean Beach, had our own garage (which is very necessary on the busy block), there were 5 or 6 cruisers for us to ride around on, boogie boards, beach chairs, beach towels, a beach blanket... and even a shower outside in the yard area. Once inside, the same attention to detail carried all through the house. Wifi, two TV's, every type of dish or cooking item you could ever need, ample towels, a plush, comfortable couch and incredibly comfortable bed. Everything we needed was right there for us. Even on last minute booking, the bungalows are perfectly reasonable cost wise, and the ability to cook and entertain without having to eat out every meal was fabulous. This was the perfect place to stay, and I will never stay anywhere else in San Diego again!!

You are within a 10 minute walk to everything would need, including bars, restaurants and of course the beach. We will definitely be staying here again and also recommending to all our friends! And if you do want to head downtown its only a $14.00 Uber ride.

There are also dorm rooms with bunk beds and shared bathrooms. The common area is nice with a large couch, a kitchen for cooking and storing food and a TV. Pacific Beach is a few steps away with plenty of dining options around. I had a nice time here. You can't beat the price to stay so close to the ocean. The staff was great and gave me a tour of the facility when I arrived. You can rent equipment like surfboards, bikes, skateboards, beach towels, etc from the front office. California Dreams has everything you need to make your beach experience fun. They also run a coffee shop outside in the mornings.

I was first in bathroom when I woke up, so no issues using the bathroom. I slept very well. Woke up twice in the middle of the night, but I'm a light sleeper. Heard light snoring in middle of night. The staff was very friendly. Asked purpose of visit. Fully explained all amenities. Gave complimentary ear plugs. I was a little worried about finding parking at 11pm. But there were a ton of spaces everywhere. I would definitely come back here again.

Vibes here are absolutely immaculate. I did not expect to enjoy this place as much as I did…read more I've only stayed in one other hostel before--a hostel in Zurich, Switzerland--so it was hard not to compare the two experiences. This hostel sits right on the beach and boardwalk and is known for its lively, social atmosphere. I was originally hoping for something a bit more peaceful and restful, but I ended up loving the energy. In terms of cleanliness, it doesn't quite measure up to my experience in Zurich. However, that shortcoming is easily overshadowed by the incredible ambiance and stunning location. The sound of the ocean waves alone is enough to melt away stress. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted by friendly faces. The hostel feels like one giant living room filled with friends from all over the world. Conversations happen naturally, and everyone seems relaxed, welcoming, and carefree. It's genuinely amazing how easy it is to connect with people despite language barriers or age differences. The accommodations themselves are simple--basic bunk beds and shared bathrooms--but comfortable and clean enough. Falling asleep to the sound of the waves and waking up to a cool ocean breeze was pure bliss. If you're looking for luxury, this probably isn't the place. But if you're looking for atmosphere, community, and an unbeatable beachfront experience, it's hard to beat.

The price was very reasonable compared to other hotels near the beach. There is an additional fee ($37.50, I think) for using the private parking lot. We did pay that for the first couple days; we arrived on the weekend and the free public parking area was packed. On weekdays it wasn't difficult to find free parking nearby so we did not need to park in the private lot. The staff are totally understanding about this. During a more busy time of year it might be worth it to pay for the parking though. They do not serve breakfast there. They do have a nice coffee and hot drink dispenser in the lobby, it's free for guests. My husband is still talking about how he misses this a week after our stay. There are restaurants immediately next to the hotel, just a short stroll from your room. Our room was pretty small, but it was clean and comfortable. I did not like how loud the air conditioner was. It was cool enough that we could just leave our balcony door open. If we had had to have it on all night it would not have been good. I don't know if that is a problem in other rooms. I definitely would stay here again if we come back to San Diego. And I hope we do!

However, it was near-impossible to spend time in the lobby bar and the lobby area overlooking the pool and ocean because: Every door and most windows were open ... and it was COLD! BTW: On each floor, many hallway doors and windows were open too. Note to GM: Kim, its winter. I think it's a good idea to keep the guests warm and comfortable. :-)

Overall, it was a good experience, but a few things didn't quite match our expectations. Upon arrival, the building wasn't as "grand" as it appears in the promotional videos--it has more of a homey, slightly outdated feel, though still pleasant. The front desk staff were very friendly and helpful, even offering a golf cart service on a first-come, first-served basis for late-night rides back to the hotel, which was a nice touch. Our room was nice, but not exactly what we expected. We had requested a king ocean-view room--the view was absolutely amazing--but the bed was definitely closer to a queen size. Unfortunately, my husband had trouble sleeping because his side of the mattress was sagging. On a positive note, the bathroom was spotless--really well maintained (check out my photos!). And the location is a huge highlight--within easy walking distance to local shops and restaurants, which made everything super convenient. Overall, a mixed experience: great location and service, but some room details could definitely be improved.
