My family visits the Richmond, VA area twice a year each spring for the Jefferson Cup soccer tournament. Every time we head down, Mission BBQ is on our list of places to visit. First of all, the theme and decor is very cool. Basically it's a military theme and I believe the restaurant chain is owned by and supports our US military veterans. You walk in, get in line for the counter, and place your order. They have fountain drinks or a wide variety of bottled drinks (make sure you grab a bottle of Cheerwine). My ideal meal here is the lean brisket, baked beans, mac and cheese, and a Cheerwine. My wife had the brisket sandwich and that was very good as well. Last year we had the ribs and were not disappointed. The pulled chicken is next on my list to try, Mission BBQ is a delicious meal, fun theme, and a great cause. See you next March! read more

The Mission location at 5432 Glenside Drive in Richmond, VA always does an outstanding job overall. In my most recent visit, Robert took our order for carry out. He always recognizes us a regular customers and this time I told myself I wanted to commend him for his kindness and professionalism. Mission BBQ has steep prices but the quality is equivalent. However, what keeps us coming back (more than we should) is people like Robert. The open kitchen concept provides full view of management and team interaction - it always looks and feels positive. I got the brisket sandwich, I had a choice between a lean cut and a more fat moist cut. I chose the lean. It was lean and good. I got the tangy honey sweet BBQ sauce and then went back to try all of them. So good. I even put some sauce in my beans and then put my beans on top of my brisket - wow!! What a good mess. I ordered the 5 rib bones and got a good portion. It was okay. Needed the bbq sauce for flavour. I got the Mac and cheese which was pretty good. Had a nice little crispy top finish. I found the cornbread a little dry. Service was quick. You line up and get your order 'eat in' or 'to go'. Walking in I thought you had to get seated and served so I was a little confused. It's very old south army decoration. Feels like you're in bar eating at picnic tables which, if that's your aesthetic, they served. This was a very busy place on a fall Saturday evening. I ordered a turkey sandwich and a side of mac and cheese. I don't eat a lot of meat, so I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed the smokey flavor of their turkey. The portion size is very generous, I received four thick slices of turkey! The macaroni and cheese is top notch, as many other reviewers have stated. Next time I visit a Mission BBQ I'll try the salmon and the cornbread. I wish they had more meatless and seafood options. I was hit with a barbecue craving, and so this is the place I picked to go. I had eaten at a Mission BBQ in another location and it had been really good. Unfortunately, not the case here. I got the two meat platter, with brisket and pulled pork. Brisket was nice, nothing outstanding but nice. The pulled pork lacked flavor and thank goodness for barbecue sauce. I also ordered the five bone ribs. These were horrible. They were way overcooked. Yes, ribs should pull easily away from the bone, but there should be a tiny bit of resistance. This meat was basically mush. You should be able to pull ribs apart, but you also should be able to pick up the bone and eat the meat from it, not slip the bone out and have the rest of the meat basically disintegrate between your fingers. I don't know if these had been cooked a while back and then held in a warming tray for way too long or what but they did have a somewhat stale flavor. The two sides I I got to go with this were collard greens and creamed corn, which was listed as a seasonal side. The collard greens were very good. Little bits of brisket mixed in with the greens. I doused them with a little of my pepper sauce when I got home which always is great on greens, but they would've been fine without it. I guess maybe I was the only one ordering creamed corn. What I got was more cream than corn. I basically had to search for the corn. It also had this vaguely sour taste to it, which made me decide to throw it out. I didn't want to risk eating a cream sauce that had gone bad. The place was packed. I stood in line for about 10 minutes to place my order which made me optimistic that I was about to get some really good barbecue. Sadly, my hopes were dashed when I got the food home. My barbecue bona fides and yes, I realize how obnoxious this is - native Texan, have smoked my share of briskets and pork shoulders, and chickens, and sausage in my lifetime, back in my younger days. I know what barbecue is supposed to be like. The service was friendly, and the place was lively, and considering the level of business they were doing, this shouldn't have been "old" food, but at least two of the items, the ribs and the creamed corn, tasted like they had long passed their servable lifespan. read more

This is our Goto spot for fast bbq. You can never go wrong with getting BBQ from here. I do however think they have changed a few things on their menu to include the pulled chicken and the beef brisket since I've last been. The changes are food the good. The pulled chicken is much more moist and we now get a choice if the fatty or lean part of the brisket. We also 5 bone spare rib which were extremely tender. It has been over 3 years since I have been back in the area and on my first night in town I headed over to Mission BBQ. As I had remembered from previous visits the staff was very friendly and I did not have to wait long for my order to come out. I had the two meat platter with ribs and moist brisket. The meat was a tender and full flavored as I had recalled. It had that great smoked taste. I had a side of corn plus collard greens which were good also. She didnt engage me as customer and I had to ask for help while she state at me with a half retarded look on her face. But it was not only me , she gave the customers behind me the same nasty attitude. O could have left and went to order food somewhere else, but I support Mission barbecue because of its veteran caring theme and I support veterans. This is not the type of person they should have working at the very front end to initially meet customers perhaps she would be better used sweeping floors and dumping trash. You basically order from a well lite menu board above the counter, pay and provide your name. Staff is extremely friendly and proactive without being overbearing.
