I generally eat dinner at this location when I am on the road for business. There is ample parking, and very easy to get in and out of the location. The restaurant is always clean and relatively busy. In will say the employees are always courteous and accommodating. As for the food, you can't really mess up Mission BBQ. I'd say it is pretty consistent to other locations I've tried in other states. The brisket is always fantastic, and their sides are great as well. An incredible experience coming down from Canada. Moved down to Henrico from Canada for work, and living down the street you stop by Buzz and Ned's, and a bunch of restaurants up and down West Broad. I popped in for curiousity's sake, and my goodness what a place. The first thing you notice when you walk in is you're hit with the smell of smoke. The sweet smell of smoked meats fill your nose with an intense pleasant smell, it just draws you in. The wall is plastered with photographs of veterans and army flags and slogans such as "The only easy day was yesterday". In Toronto, we don't get much BBQ, so I got called up and said "Hey, sorry this is my first time". This dude Chris was so unreal and helped guide me through it, gave me a few samples, and his recommendation. I went with the 2 meat platter (Brisket and pulled chicken) Mac and Fries. "Don't forget to get the alabama white sauce" was what he told me after I ordered. The wait was short, and I asked for the white sauce. Tables were clean, plentiful and had 6 BBQ sauces to try from. Out of the 6, the most impressive for me was the KC bbq. The cumin in that sauce brings out a great flavor. Anyway, the brisket was nice and tender. I'm not typically one to eat a fatty meat, because of a texture issue I have with it, but my god it was amazing. The brisket was nice and juicy, the meat was really well smoked, and the flavors of their rub really shone through in the brisket. The pulled chicken was something out of left field for me. I didn't expect it to be that good it was until I took a bite. My god it's absolutely worth it. Fries are well seasoned, and the Mac is amazing. I tried a sample of their Collard Greens, and it rocked, cooked in Chicken stock, that was just....out of this world. If you're passing by, come by and check them out. Chris was an amazing person to help me out as much as he did, helped orient me and gave me a good experience. He's a great guy, and I wish him all the best. They also donate what they don't sell, which is an amazing gesture and what more restaurants should be doing to support their local community. Mission is one of my favorite bbq spots so I decided to download the app for faster ordering. I was so excited about picking up their signature smoked salmon that I walked in with a big smile. After standing at the counter for almost 5 minutes, no one had acknowledged my presence. Others were being helped next to me and behind me but still no one said anything. Finally I decided that I wanted to be seen. I wasn't rude but I let them know that I was not happy about how I was NOT being treated. We spent the week in NC & VA, and wanted to complete the week with some BBQ. Mission BBQ was conveniently located near our hotel, got tons of great reviews, so it was a no brainer. When we walked in, we almost left... the line was almost out the door (approx. 30 people). Luckily the man in front of us told us to stick it out, the line moves quickly. He was right! We were at the front of the ordering line soon enough. However, during our wait, they ran out of pulled pork... how does a BBQ place run out of pulled pork before 7:30 on a Friday night? Can't you plan for that? Order a couple more pigs or something? Anyway, the entire point of our visit was for pulled pork. Instant disappointment. Our substitute choices were chopped brisket & pulled chicken sandwiches. We threw in a couple sides - fries, "cold slaw," and mac-n'-cheese & some sweet tea. Our order was ready in about 3 minutes. Seriously... I hardly even got my drink & sat down & our name was called. This was really, really impressive considering the amount of people in the restaurant. The food was good - not the best BBQ I've ever had, but good. The brisket already was marinated in sauce, so I didn't really get to enjoy the 6 choices of BBQ sauce at the table. The effort is there, but... as with any authentic BBQ, the food must turnover quickly because it dries out. The first time I had Mission BBQ was on the road in Richmond Va. it was great! 4 1/2 stars. When I learned they were a chain, I was surprised. I tried a location in my home state of CT yesterday. It was a slow dinner crowd (weather was not great) and the food was not up to the standards I experienced in VA. Service was excellent and the staff was very polite and attentive. However, the brisket and in particular, the pulled chicken was dry. The baby back ribs were salty. The pulled pork though was very good. I have to believe that was their top selling item and moved quickly. I will give them another chance but I'll be going back on the weekend when it will be busier. read more

I arrived in Richmond with a little time to have lunch before being at work at noon. I literally saw Mission BBQ while at a red light and decided to give it a try. I was warmly welcomed at the door and told about the business while this employee walked with me to the order counter. I went with the Pulled Chicken sandwich, with Maggie's Mac-N-Cheese as the side. Order was quickly ready. Liked that on the table with multiple sauces, ranging from sweet to spicy and hot (plus Eastern NC bbq sauce). The pulled chicken sandwich is piled high and with a dash of Eastern NC sauce was a great taste. the Mac n Cheese was favorable. I liked the military decor of the restaurant. I got the 2 meats for $8.99, and made it an XXL combo (2 sides and a drink) for $4 additional. Sweet tea: Good. You can tell it's homemade, and the lemonade seems to be too. Lemonade was too sour for my liking though. Macaroni and cheese: Fair. Indeed, cheesy, but there was no kick to it what-so-ever. Kind of bland... Wouldn't order again. Baked beans (made with Brisket): Bingo! Pretty good, seasoned nicely, and I liked that there were real pieces of brisket in the side. Brisket: The cashier asked me if I wanted it "moist" or something else, I couldn't hear her that well. I asked her suggestion and only when I got my order did I realize that moist meant fatty brisket compared to the original brisket. It was very flavorful, I'll admit, but the fat content was overwhelming. To be fair, she did inform me it was a more fatty cut of meat. Next time, I'd go for the regular brisket. Two of my most trusted Yelp friends gave Mission BBQ a 5 star rating. Having nothing else to do on this fine Saturday afternoon we decided to make the journey to the west end. We pulled in around 4:30pm and the place only had about 3 tables filled. They greeted us right away when we walked in the door (a very good sign.) The young lady taking our order was very helpful and courteous. We mentioned it was our first time and she politely explained the menu. I knew I was going to get the chicken because Mr. Tommy wrote a small book about it. I also had to try the 2 meat sampler (brisket and the pulled pork.) My girlfriend and I had the perfect game plan to try all the delicious meat. She is more of a chicken girl as opposed to heavy BBQ food like ribs, pork, and brisket. She DUSTED that yard bird! Bones and cartilage were the only things left from that bird. I equally laid waste to my brisket and pulled pork. The coleslaw needs a lot of work, so I'll just leave it at that. The cornbread though. Wow. Just wow. Like Tommy said it was moist like eating a piece of cake. Actually, it was better than cake! At the table they have 6 BBQ sauces to choose from, 3 hot and 3 sweet. We didn't try them all because we have to leave something open for the next visit. The Memphis Belle BBQ sauce was our pick. It was perfectly balanced and added that finishing touch to the meat. The brisket and pulled pork were dead even in terms of quality and flavor. I thought the chicken was almost too Smokey in flavor. I mean, that bird was PINK all the way through. It was so smoked out Cheech & Chong would be proud. Although I personally thought it was a tad too Smokey, it's clearly the All-Star on the team. It's as good as they say. You say they sell out of it? I'm not surprised in the least. The staff was incredibly helpful. When I set my order down on the table I realized I had forgotten to grab silverware, as a turned around there was a guy HANDING ME 2 SETS OF SILVERWARE! DUDE, that's going above and beyond right there. After we ate we praised the food and a guy brought us some deep fried french-fries to take home. The décor was so Gung-Ho American I'm surprised a bald Eagle didn't fly in and perch on a stool. They also have reserved parking for members of the Wounded Warrior Project. If I had to choose my three favorite foods, I'd have to go with tacos, noodle soups, and barbecue. So when a new barbecue place opens right down the road, of course I'm going to check it out. --Atmosphere: Immediately upon arriving in the parking lot, it's clear that Mission BBQ has a theme going for it. From the black army truck (it's set up to be a smoker!) to the license plates and items of people who have put service in for our country on display, the whole place has a military vibe. A friendly military vibe, I might add, but a military vibe all the same. I'm not a very patriotic person, but the theme worked. The actual interior is rather spacious, with the middle part making up the seating area. There are booths, tables, and tall tables. The ordering of the food is done at a Chipotle-esque line; you line up on the left, place your order, move to the right, and wait until they call your name. To be honest, if there are multiple people waiting for their food, it can get a little congested at the end. The drink fountain is located at the end too, so it's convenient to have it on your way to the table, but honestly if it's crowded with patrons waiting for their order, it might be a bit of a problem. It wasn't a deal breaker and the line moved fairly quickly. Oh, and quick semi-amusing story. At 12:00 noon every day, they pause everything and play the National Anthem. I didn't want to be disrespectful so I stood up for it, but as it was going on, a couple walked in the doors and were visibly surprised to see everybody standing up and it took them a few seconds to realize what was going on. I might have smiled at this. --Food: Enough about what it looks like, now onto the food! Obviously without good food, everything else isn't important. Thankfully, Mission has great food! I had the pulled pork sandwich and an order of french fries. My fiancee had the turkey with an order of french fries. -Sauces: The meat comes unsauced but each table features a carrier of 6 BBQ sauces. There are traditional sauces like ketchup, mustard, and hot sauce at the condiment section up front by the drink fountain, but the real treat are these table sauces. There's also house made vinegar. The sauces represent a full spectrum of BBQ goodness (see my pictures for each of the descriptions). My favorite was the Smoky one and the KC one, although I liked all of them. -Pulled Pork: I'm a huge fan of pulled pork and their pork is fantastic. It's finely pulled, smoked, and delicious. It didn't taste fatty and went marvelously with at least half of the sauces. I had the sandwich version which was piled incredibly high. So high, in fact, that I ate the top half of pork with a fork by dipping it into sauces and then finished the sandwich. The bread it was on was soft and went well. -Turkey: The staff went around the room offering samples of certain food, so I managed to get to taste what my fiancee got as her main dish. We both loved it, and it very well may be what I order next time (oh yeah, there'll be a next time). It's smoked and sliced relatively thinly. I enjoyed it because it wasn't dry like some sliced turkey is. When I asked her for her input on Mission BBQ as a whole for this review, she wanted me to include "dat turkey doe". -Fries: French fries are single handedly my favorite side ever. Add that to my dipping sauce obsession I have and we have something truly special here. The fries have that nice fry seasoning like Red Robin / Buz and Ned's offers, and I love that. I tasted every one of their sauces by dipping fries into them, and quite honestly I could probably make a meal out of that alone. Their fries are amazing. --Cost: The main meats are about $7 (sandwich or plated), sides are $2, and you have the ability to make drink combos for $3 (adds a side and a drink). You can also get ribs. I like that you buy everything individually, that way you get exactly what you want, and in the grand scheme of BBQ, everything here is affordable. --Service: The staff was incredibly nice. The guy at the end of line explained how all of the meat is made and that they make some of the sauces in house. We were offered free samples of anything on the menu at the register, as well as being handed little dishes of turkey to try at our table. I expect this to probably only be an opening month thing, but all the same, they know how to make a customer welcome. --Overall: Love it. From the welcoming staff and more importantly the food, everything was a great experience. There are so many things the place does right that I'm willing to overlook the slight end of the line congestion and still be confident giving Mission BBQ 5 stars. I don't know what kind of business they're running but we ordered catering for 30 adults for my brother's wedding rehearsal dinner and got food for 10, maybe 12 tops. It was laughable. When we called to explain that 1/4 tray of coleslaw, 1/2 tray of Mac and cheese and 3 half trays of entree meat wasn't enough for 30 people -- they said that what we got was 30 people's worth and there's nothing they could do. DH and I are pretty hard on BBQ places. But we were quite pleased with our first (and certainly not our last) trip to Mission BBQ. From the looks of the line of the people waiting to place their order, it seems lots of others feel the same way. As the place as only been open a few short weeks, we did not quite know what to expect. But the place has service down pat. Counter service is fast with your dinner served up pretty quickly. Wait staff walk around to see if you anything. They are attentive without being intrusive. Now on to the food... They have all the standards you would expect to see. I ordered the 2-Meat Sampler with brisket and smoked sausage. For my sides, I chose baked beans and cheesy potatoes. DH got the 5-bone spare ribs with slaw. Brisket is a very hard piece of meat to cook well. I am happy to report that Mission did a very fine job. It was moist, tender and full of flavor. The smoked sausage was nice too. The sauce with my beans packed a bit of a yummy punch. And since I never met a potato I did not like, the cheesy potatoes were so good, it was almost like a dessert. Best of all, the meats were so well cooked, nothing needed any sauce. DH enjoyed his rib dinner. While tasty, they were a tad over-cooked (ribs are not supposed to fall off the bone, contrary to what you see on Chili's TV commercials). But he was happy to polish them off and nibble off my plate as well. As a Navy retiree, DH especially liked the military theme to the place.
