I went here tonight on a whim after hearing good things, and I was in the area.
First off - the location. When you drive up, the place looks abandoned, but it's because it's the only thing bringing in business in the entire shopping center (whatever the big store is next door was already closed, or near about empty, at 7 PM), but the section of the building for Mission BBQ looks warm and welcoming.
And, come on, there's an army truck outside. That's kinda cool.
The place, despite outside appearances, was hopping. I probably had to wait about 10 minutes to place my order. The layout is similar to how Qdoba or Chipotle works - the line forms on one side of the large, open room, you place your order with a cashier and pay up front, wait for your name to be called and grab your tray, and sit down wherever you please. One of the workers brought people standing in line a sample of the jalapeño and cheese sausage, and it almost made me change my mind on the pork/brisket sampler.
But I stood firm. I got the pork and brisket sampler, with a side of fries (the XL Combo) and a drink. While waiting for my food, I saw several people with what appeared to be the most delicious mac and cheese I've ever seen, and I almost asked to change my side option. But that was a very short time I had to wait. My food was ready before I had a chance to even put a lid on my cup. I was almost worried because I thought it might be a bit like fast food barbecue.
The meal itself came with a piece of cornbread, and the worker asked if it was my first time here. He told me about how the meats were cooked, and the sauces that were on the table. It was welcoming, but it felt a little long-winded - I already ordered the meat, I kinda didn't care how many hours they were in the smoker at this point, I just wanted to put my fork in it.
The first thing I bit into was one of the french fries. They were crispy with a good amount of seasoning on them (but not too much). However, after digging into the meat, I didn't even want them anymore because the meat and cornbread was so delicious.
The pork barbecue was something of a mix between a NC style and a KC/Tennessee style - it was thick and hearty, but had a lightness to it at the same time. It was similar to Buz & Neds, but a little less heavy and rich. It paired really well with the honey hot sauce.
The brisket, however, was probably one of the best I've ever had. The cashier that took my order asked if I wanted it "lean" or "wet," and I got it wet. I think I can guess what the difference might be, but I'm not positive. I stuck my fork in it and it just fell apart. I didn't even need a knife. The flavors were, similar to the pork, strong but light. You can taste the smoke in every bite, and the crispy ends made it all the more delicious. I tried several sauces on it, but, honestly, it didn't need them.
The cornbread is what I envision the perfect cornbread to be. It was somewhat dense, but didn't feel too heavy or buttery when you took a bite, and you get a nice note of sweetness from the corn. It was a good way to cool down the spicier sauces (which, by the way, weren't overly spicy at all).
The only thing I would say was bad about the experience was the method of placing your order. The cashier and pickup area has too many people crammed in a small space - people placing orders, picking up their meal, getting their drinks, and all their condiments. Thankfully, that area was where people spent the least amount of time because the food came up so quickly, and I can imagine that, on a slower night, it would be fine.
All in all, after tonight's meal, I have a new top favorite barbecue restaurant in Richmond, and I would advise anyone to go here and check it out. read more
