First, the bad. Please, please, please get someone to correct your air conditioning duct work. Having the ducts blow cold air directly on you and your food is not how it's supposed to be. Having my hot, delicious food get cold 60 seconds after putting it on the table because the vents are angled down (hint: cold air falls, aim it up, not down) takes away from the dining experience. You can't leave a paper towel on the table because it will get blown off the table. That's not how it's supposed to be. Blowing 50 degree air on me and my steak is irritating! There, that's my only negative! (PLEASE FIX IT). Now, to the food. Nothing bad to say. Pulled pork has proven to be excellent time after time. The turkey? Are you kidding me? Amazingly tasty! Brisket? Delicious! Smoked sausage? Great flavor! Ribs? There is a reason the Famous Dave's that was directly across the street closed and tore the building down! I haven't even mentioned their Black Plate Specials that are limited time specials! Brisket Burger? (Sorry, I just drooled on myself) When the Ribeye steak comes back, give it a try. It put Outback to shame. Mississippi Mud Pie? Are you kidding me? Not sure if you can tell, but I've eaten there a few times. P.S. The wait staff is amazing. A coworker of mine had a medical emergency here and they jumped into action. They found a place for her to lay down and provided necessary nourishment to prevent her condition from getting worse. They continued to check on her throughout our time there. Maria brought to our church meeting samples of all the menu items we were interested in. The next day I placed our order, and she was most helpful in assisting me in ordering the exact amount of barbecue that we would need. Where do I start? I love Mission BBQ. As a franchise, they never disappoint. This location was no different. It was our first visit here. We were coming from out of town and wanted to eat somewhere familiar. Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted by several team members. When we approached the counter, the cashier was welcoming and pleasant. Since it was 45 minutes before closing time, we were a little apprehensive about going in so we appreciated the enthusiasm. After ordering our food, we got our drinks and not long after our food was ready. The food was amazing as usual. I got the 2 meat sampler with the pulled chicken and brisket. Delicious is the only word for the food. The meat was tender with deep flavors. As always, the selection of sauces at the table is an added bonus. Bay-B-Que is my new favorite sauce! Love this place! The staff is very welcoming and always smiling. It's one of the few places where the people working seem to enjoy their jobs. The food is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! The meat is so good it melts in your mouth. The sides are some of the best I've ever had. The desserts - YUMMY! The support they show towards the military warms my heart! I've only eaten there once but plan to return. Luckily I got there early (11:30 am) and waltzed through the line. Pulled pork with slaw was huge and delicious, the basket of sauces on every table let you experiment with every bite. All delicious. Mission bbq: mission failed! Over rubbed, over cooked, over smoked bbq with unjustifiable prices. Went with high hopes, left with light pockets and old bay coming out of my pores. If you like corn syrup, they have 6 different flavors sitting on the table. Brisket was very dry. Ribs were enjoyable and were the high note of the visit, but they will run you about 2 bucks a bone... The place looks great though. Cool urinals...  If it werent so expensive Id give them a second chance. read more

This place was awesome. This was my first time here and the food and service were great. My family and I spent 40 minutes waiting across the street at Friday's before we finally left after the manager gave our table away to a really rude and grumpy party of 20. When we went in to Mission the staff greeted us right away and explained the menu and sauces. I haven't had bbq this good since I left Kansas. My only feedback was the pulled pork was a little dry. Ive been to mission bbq about 10 times in the past 8 months, tried several different plates which were all extremely GREAT, the pulled pork I consider the best. I highly recommend the 3 meat platter it's filling and has a great price. Great staff and the best part is if you forgot to get/order something the staff will get it. Eaten there several times for lunch, the food and service never disappoint. The pulled pork is very good and the brisket outstanding. Love the fact that there are plenty of sauces, if in the mood, the meat certainly does not need them! Each time I've been there, I've had my two toddler/infant age children, the folks that work there have bent over backwards to make sure that everybody is taken care of, from bringing crayons for the kids to color with to offering to get drink refills. I've passed this resturant numerous times. So today my family and I tried it out. Folks at the registers were very helpful! After we all made our choices our food was made fast and correct. Price is a little high but quality is very high! The waitress that tended to my wife's drink refill went above the call of duty to ensure that my wife was satisfied. Wonderful bbq place! My youngest daughter is a total carnivore ad she said their beef brisket is the best. They have a lot of different sauces to try at the table and their cold slaw is really unique- it's more vinegar style than mayo and it's really good. Had to see what the fuss was about, and must say it was average at best. Having grew up in Texas, and have lived in Louisiana and Memphis, I know BBQ. The ability to cook Brisket is what separates good BBQ from average BBQ, as anyone can cook chicken and pork. One's brisket should not require sauce to improve the taste, brisket should be sliced, not a mixture of chunks mixed with chopped brisket. I will say I've tried all the bbq places in RVA, Mission probably the better of the bunch. Will I go again, yeah probably. Atmosphere was nice, Tea was great. read more

I ordered the ribs, we have used the phrase "fall off the bone" to describe a good rib, but these were so much so I could not even pick them up. I found all six sauces on the table unpalatable, so I was stuck eating rib meat with only the dry rub they were overcooked in. Not the worst I have ever had, but far from the best. My wife had the brisket, she was quite pleased, and she really liked the potato salad, it can best be described as traditional, with an added spice kick mixed in. I had the green beans, a recipe that included onions, bacon, ham and spices - not bad. The corn bread was absolutely dry as a bone and when I tried to butter it, it disintegrated into crumbles. It is my understanding the pulled pork is not made with sauce cooked in, you have to add it. This is not BBQ in my opinion and the big problem with almost all "BBQ" joints in the area. Since I did not like the sauces they offer, I would never get the pulled pork unless I am planning to bring it home so I can add my own sauce - not what I go to BBQ joints for, so sadly I have to say a return trip is not in the future. read more

The best BBQ I've had in Richmond. The menu is a little complicated and took me a few minutes to figure out how to order. The brisket and turkey are great. There are a variety of sauces to choose from. The inside of the restaurant looks like a fun fast food type of restaurant, but it's very pleasant. The food is ready fast and always tastes great. Outside seating is great on nice days. I've tried the other BBQ places (Extra Billy's...etc.) and I've found that the meat here is better quality and much tastier. read more

We had lunch here yesterday, and it was quite good! I was pleasantly surprised that a fast food BBQ place would have burnt ends for me to try! I ordered them with collard greens, hubby had the pulled pork sandwich with Mac n' Cheese. I enjoyed the flavor, but burnt ends aren't for me. They were a bit tough and most of the fat had been rendered out, but the meat had a good flavor. The greens were pretty darn good for fast food. Hubby said his sandwich was a bit dry, but the Memphis Belle sauce solved that issue nicely. The star of the show was the mac n' cheese! Holy moley, it was yummy! When I return, I'll try the moist brisket with mac n' cheese. They were busy, but they were quick! The service was awesome! Staff, including the owner came to check on us during the meal. We were dining with friends and the kids were given a brownie. Lucky kids!! My friends raved over the sausage and coconut cream pie. Hmmm, might have to try that next time, too! read more

It's that time of year--Redskins traing camp '14 and an excellent excuse to continue the quest for that perfect rack of Richmond's finest spare ribs on a first of three night rib orgy! On this night, my son and I decided to try Mission BBQ on Glenside Dr., Richmond (directly across the street from Famous Dave's BBQ--go figure?). We ordered their "full rack" of spare ribs. In my opinion, Missions consider a 10 bone rack, a full rack. In the BBQ world, that's consider a "cheater's rack." A true full rack is 11 to 13 bones. Furthermore, Mission's ribs look like they came off a piglet and not an adult hog (refer to attached pix). Their ribs come only dry w/ no sauce. There is six choices of sauces to choose from. The ribs have a decent smokey flavor, unfortunately, that cannot overcome the fact our puny ribs were over-cooked (smoked) and fell apart when handling them--rib meat should have some texture as you bite into it. Our sides included cornbread, baked beans, and mac & cheese. The corn bread was flat out fantastic. It was sweet, soft, and possessed an authentic corn flavor. The baked beans were good, but reminded me of jazzed up canned baked beans. The mac and cheese was good, prepared with a crispy crust and creamy-cheesy macaroni underneath. As far as Mission's ribs go, they have a long way to catch up to Buz & Neds BBQ, Alamo BBQ (Tex-Mex Nirvana!), and Famous Dave's spare ribs. Hey, its not about finding the perfect rack, it's the journey to find them. Tomorrow night, we're off to Alamo BBQ and expectations are running high! read more

I saw this place earlier in the week when I was in Roanoke and it struck me as worth a try. Unfortunately while I was unable to try the Roanoke branch lucky me to have found one in Richmond. I am pretty picky in judging bbq so I always go in with lower expectations so as to not be disappointed. The first thing I do when getting out of my car is take a deep breath. If I don't smell smoke I am not eating...this place had smoke! As far as the menu is concerned I went for a 3 meat plate to spread the trial out. The brisket was meh...but I am picky because I have had some truly phenomenal brisket in Texas and most places don't match up..however their sausage and chicken had a delish flavor on its own and they have various sauces so try them all to find what suits you. Thier Mac and cheese is worth every penny...it was the highlight of the whole meal..All in all I would return here again I was here on business. read more

Three trips in, three great trips each time. I have tried all the meats thus far and nothing to complain about .... except the jalapeno sausage. Would have liked more heat and less cheese taste. But I came for the BBQ and will continue to do so. I can do without the sausage. Ribs - babyback and St Louis offered. Both meaty and flavorful. For those not familiar with The Charred Rib that used to be in Maryland, the babybacks are very much like theirs with a very familiar to me flavor. Might stump some people when they first try them. They do not de membrane the ribs so that might turn off some people. Brisket - two options of lean with no fat and moist with some of the fat cap. Great smoke ring, and flavor and moisture even in the lean. Turkey - again moist and smokey but not overbearing. Don't think of dry Thanksgivings of years gone by cause this ain't it. Pork - again great flavor and moisture. Chicken - They smoke and mop a half chicken to perfection. Sides - been sticking with green beans and mac & cheese. But they have others. Sauces - as others have mentioned they have 6 sauces on the TABLES. But that is not all. They have at condiment counter Alabama, Bold, and some dry rub. Now the one draw back they need to learn - BBQ in the south needs desserts like banana pudding or pecan pie. :) Past lack of a true Southern BBQ joint dessert and the jalapeno sausage, it has been a great three trips in during first week and can see many more trips coming up soon. read more

So it isn't the best BBQ I've ever eaten, but Mission is always good and the service is always great so five stars! Consistency is key with me, and I can say that I've been here at least three times in the past month (fiánce loves it) and it has always been very good. My favorite things to order are either the pulled pork sandwich with slaw and fries as my side or the pulled pork meat market with green beans and baked beans. Each meat market order comes with cornbread. I think that the meat here is perfectly seasoned and my favorite sauce is the Memphis Belle. I love that you are able to try many different sauces and pick your favorite. Hands down, the fresh, hand cut fries are the best side. They are a must; however, I cannot bring myself to eat fries every single time I go, so I get baked beans and green beans sometimes. The green beans are good, nothing extraordinary. The baked beans are also good, nothing extraordinary and they taste as if they are cooked in Sweet Baby Ray's. On our first visit, my fiance and I tried their featured dessert -- the peanut butter pie. For a little over $2, you get what you pay for and it is definitely an okay dessert for a single person. We were not fans of the corn flakes on this dessert and thought it would be perfectly fine without them. My fiance recently tried Peggy's Peach Cobbler and seemed to like that better. Other than that, everyone there is super friendly and helpful. They thank servicemen and women for their service and stop what they are doing at noon everyday for the National Anthem.
