As Ketchikan had the best prices in Alaska, this is where we purchased most of the gifts to bring back to friends and family. Anything from Russian nesting dolls to polished rocks. I stocked up on coasters and shot glasses. Many designs to choose from. Aside from all the cool souvenirs, they also have a candy store within. They carry jellybean, chocolates and many boxed novelty candy. The staff is super friendly and helpful. As we purchased over $100, we got a cap and shopping bag as gifts. If you're on a cruise and are looking for places to shop, this store has the best prices!

One of the employees (bald and Caucasian) walks over from the counter, snatches the booklet out of her hands, and aggressively snaps at her saying, "Keep your hands to yourself and don't touch anything! This is not a store for kids!" Note, this is a store with Star Wars posters on their doors and jigsaw puzzles. My daughter and I were a bit shaken, but I said a quick sorry, and then it hit me - this kind of behavior was completely rude and inexcusable and I felt like I should have defended her and told him to back off. But then I realized if it happened to us, chances are this was not an isolated or unique incident. The same will or has already happened to others who visited this store. If they continue this kind of behavior, they are going to hit someone's else's nerve who doesn't have the same restraint that I did. So if the same happens to you and your child if you do come here, know that what they're doing is wrong, and absolutely fight back if not just for yourself, but for the rest of us this has happened to. To gain some perspective as well though, hundreds of cruise ships with tourists visit this store regularly. They have probably had incidents where kids mishandled and broke some items, so they are very defensive about it. But here's the thing - if you're in this business, you should also be educated enough to know how to deal with this respectfully with customers. Put a sign up saying "Children not permitted. Thanks for your understanding". Or you say, "I'm so sorry, we've had some incidents before and prefer children not to handle the merchandise. Thanks". That's it. Anyways, I hope this is a lesson in customer service to this store because they do carry a lot of very nice items. But many times it's not what you're selling that determines how good your business is - it's how you treat your customers.

We wanted to get a totem pole to take home as our souvenir from Ketchikan, but didn't want a cheesy…read moreresin casting or an overpriced hand made piece cranked out on a line like a factory. We headed down Main Street and stumbled upon Rail Creek and had a great experience. The store is probably about 750 sq ft and is split with half devoted to totems and half to stone carved sculptures, mostly of animals. The wall of totems had a cool selection with lots of different stories told. They aren't on consignment like some places and they work directly with the artists to create the pieces and provide a retail space to sell them while negotiating a good price they can pass on to us consumers. Win-win. They were willing to make a deal on a mix of pieces but we settled on just one that we are so happy with. I'm so glad we stumbled upon their shop and stayed away from the castings or the over priced consigned pieces that look identical in every shop. Highest recommendation for a great locally made Ketchikan product!

I didn't mind a higher price knowing it helped sustain the Alaskan economy. Mrs. E. found plenty of clever uses of metal, wood, glass and fabric. That is to say she managed to drop $150 in the shop. This is the only place in town that I could find themed guitar picks. Understand, I don't play them, I arrange and secure them (usually in a flower pattern) to hard cardboard and make small shadow boxes. Today, all the picks featured pictures and the words "Ketchikan, Alaska". A great conversation piece for my wall. This is one of the larger shops at the south end of the port area, just north of the Xmas store. Their children's section prices here are pretty standard. You may get lucky and catch a sale. When there are six ships in port, this store might be a congested nightmare but we were there with only one ship that holds 2000 people so shopping here was a breeze with no waiting to pay for everything.
