I did not alert the server but I thought maybe that was the way the restaurant made them. The peach cobbler was rich and good. Should have ordered ice cream as able mode. Large portions. My only big concern was the extra utility charge on the bill. I did not see it until I got nome, a little late to discuss.. On a $102.00 bill it was just shy of $18.00. We arrived when they were opening. The menu has a lot of options. My go to is always catfish and when I saw they did grits it was a no brainer. They also do bbq and I haven't had any in a while. I ordered the sampler with rib tips, burnt ends and fried shrimp. The grits were good and the catfish was light and crispy. The rib tips were coated in a sweet bbq sauce. Not my first choice but they were good. The burnt ends were tender. I also got to try the mini corn muffins - yummy, the mac and cheese - yummy, the yams - and the potato salad - bland. The owner told us it was his fault the potato salad wasn't good. He was a very friendly guy. Answered all our questions and spent time with us. It's always good to speak to the owner when you are from out of town. He's done a lot with the place. We would have gone another day to try other things but our schedule was tight. My only complaint is the amount of salt added as they certainly didn't need it. Every thing that was fried came out nice and crispy. The shrimp were nice and large. My friend said the catfish had a hint of bacon. He certainly loved the fried green tomatoes. The baked beans were flavorful but personally, they don't need the ground beef. Happened into Mississippi Boy based on Google reviews. Beautiful space with small bar and plenty of tables indoors and out though I wouldn't call the location scenic. Seems to draw a few neighborhood regulars, families, and couples. Service was attentive and prompt. Kind of an elevated down home atmosphere - quite welcoming. Food was very good, especially the catfish and burnt ends. Ribs just OK. Tried most sides with the collard greens, yams and potato salad the stars. They even have sweet tea! Ordered the beignets but they were a distinct miss. Bonus was the band playing for Friday dinner. They were AWESOME! Very bluesy/jazzy with great vocals. I have seen recent television commercials and just had to give it a try. It seemed like it might be a fusion of cajun and soul type foods. I think that opinion was exactly right. I found the staff to be friendly and they helped me with the menu and options. My wife and I both tried a blackened type catfish and ribs. The food was fantastic and the staff quite friendly. The building was clean and well maintained. My only point of concern was the overall location of the restaurant. It's in a rather rough area of Denver. An area I would normally choose not to go. Well I was not disappointed in the atmosphere and the owner was amazing with the service he gave bringing our order. If you are looking for tasty catfish this is the spot! They fried my catfish to perfection!! Delicious. The fries would be amazing if they used real potatoes or a different form of fries but they were able. My husband ordered chicken wings were alright - the drums and flats could have been seperated- the anatomy of a chicken - the yams could have used a little rendering. The jazz was pretty cool and entertaining and I can see it being an amazing space for artists, spoken words, and empowering engagements! The decor is perfect for the location and I see how the summer could be a nice date night and a social gathering for friends, family and community! Sigh...Where do I start? From the beginning to the end, this was just a bad experience. It's no wonder why there were only two people at the bar watching football and no one dining. So you order at a kiosk and are asked to leave a tip BEFORE you even get service or food. The prices are way too high for the mediocre food AND service. To start, there was a pitcher of water brought to the table but nothing to drink out of, and no silverware/plasticware. I received a text that my food was ready but 10 mins later I was still waiting for food so I had to flag someone down and ask for my food only to be told that my ticket was lost in the back so they were "working on it". I'm assuming it was the owner (older guy wearing a big hat) who came over to let me know that it was messed up but he'd throw on a lil something else for the inconvenience. When the food finally did arrive, I asked for tartar sauce but was told by the older guy that the vendor didn't bring a shipment and he didn't want to serve me what was in the kitchen so he asked did I want anything else. I took Mayo and lemons and to create a dipping sauce for my fish and shrimp. Still had to request flatware to eat off of. The complimentary grits were pretty good, but pretty heavy on the salt. The fish and shrimp were just okay. The macaroni and cheese was flavorless, I have no idea what the gunk was that was spread on the toast. The fries were covered in a seasoning dust that had no flavor. No refills on drinks. I see why there were no patrons, this business just isn't it. I'd have fathered went to the neighboring restaurant where I know that the food is good. It's hard for me to say that the service was nice even though the food was bad, because there were too many excuses for the mishaps and inconveniences. I was told that because of inflation, that's why tartar isn't given with the food, as if the arm and leg that I paid for the food couldn't cover the cost of tartar. Not to mention, tartar can be made with 3 ingredients and some seasoning. The cornbread muffin was OLD, stale, hard, and super oily!!! The pulled pork was dry. Although a bit pricy, the food was good! We got the grits and cat fish, catfish sandwich, the gumbo, and the catfish with crawfish sauce. For our sides, we had fried green tomatoes, okra, and potato salad. The catfish was seasoned very well and fried great, The grits were OK. Everything was good overall I would give it a solid 8. Where to begin with Mississippi Boy... my husband and I have had the pleasure of coming in a few times over the past few years and have enjoyed watching their growth and success. The food is great. Fresh. Well seasoned. Exactly what you hope for. I really enjoy the personal touch from the owner rubbing most of the food himself too. Service can be slow depending on the day, so I wouldn't come in if I was in a rush. They've made some improvements to the space junk using a new star for the piano and are hoping to start serving a jazz brunch shortly. We can't wait to try that. I understand the frustration with the digital ordering, but if it helps streamline the ordering so that I get exactly what I ordered, I'm not opposed. It does make it feel a bit more casual though. Our biggest disappointment with Mississippi Boy though is that the hours seem to vary. Several times we've come in and they've closed up early because it was a slow night, or they're closed for a private party, or some other reason aren't available during business hours. Ordered beef brisket they served shaved beef on crinkle cut fries. Sides were greens and cole slaw both were tasty. However, the greens did not have any of the smoked turkey the menu described. There are two kiosks at the door for take out but no signage to guide on how to eat in. Only thing that could've been better were the fries--they came out a bit soggy, probably from chilling too close to the fish. Minor thing. What stood out was how everything tasted like it was made with care. Like you could feel the South in every bite. That Moscato? Ice cold, just how I like it. And a family member got champagne, and the waiter/host blessed her with an extra glass since they had to open a new bottle. Classy move. My son& I were on vacation from Texas& decided to try out the restaurant based on the reviews.. they were about to close within the hour, but the owner, Ty, encouraged us to sit down to eat instead of taking it to go.. I'm assuming the Lil lady that helped us to our seat was his granddaughter.. she was gracious.. my son ordered a catfish/ shrimp combo w/ Mac& cheese& I ordered a rib/ catfish combo w/"potato salad& yams..i also ordered the baked beans... my total was about $89.. now some of the other reviews did mention the price being a bit high, but hey, when in Rome... the food did come out hot, the catfish wad not a filet they were more catfish pieces( bigger than nuggets) the fish was fried well& somewhat seasoned, as was the shrimp, the ribs were okay, nothing spectacular.. the side of baked beans was $8!.. I thought that was a bit expensive, but he stated it was 8oz... when it came out, it definitely didn't look like it was $8 worth.. he stated his baked beans were different since he adds beans to his meat mixture..nah, it's just baked beans& ground meat.. no brisket,no sausage.. just ground meat.. the flavor was okay.. the Mac& cheese was very bland& not cheesy, the yams were cut up in small bits, i thought it was diced julienne cut carrots at first.. but zero nutmeg, allspice, or cinnamon.. just a Lil sugar.. maybe canned..the potato salad reminded me of Sam's or a pre- made salad, but they insisted he cut up the potatoes& made it himself.... no egg, no relish.. maybe that's a southern thing.. no, I'm originally from Jersey... nonetheless, the food was average, definitely over priced.. maybe they season waaaayyyyy different in Denver..idk... but if you've never had "soul" cooking this may suffice, but if you're expecting True Mississippi cooking.. this is not it...
