Glad we finally made it to this unassuming but iconic mainstay of Chesapeake. Varied menu with great food. Wife loved the Deluxe Gyro and I was a fan of the Mr. Jim's Combo. Looks like they had recently remodeled the inside - the booths and tables looked great. We returned on Veteran's Day and greatly appreciated their discount that day. Thank you! The food was just as good, but they was apparently some sort of thermostat war as the front staff was freezing, but the keeper of the thermostat was hot back on the grill or something. Last night my husband and son went for a sub after his practice. Eight o'clock on a Wednesday night not a busy time and yet it still took 20 minutes to get two six inches. I've been told this place is an institution, and there's a reason why. Mister Jim's is known for their "submarines" - or as I call them; grinders. I walked into Mister Jim's already knowing that I was going to try their cheese steak. I ordered the half size Philly Steak and Cheese Deluxe which has onions, peppers, mushrooms, cheese (duh), lettuce, tomato and mayo. We also ordered a regular size fresh cut french fry. First off, you know it's a good grinder when it comes in a paper sleeve. Second, the "regular" size fry is HUGE, MASSIVE, enough for 2.5 people. The cheese steak was top notch - great bread and the beef was tender. The fries were perfectly cooked and tasted even better with malt vinegar they have on all of the tables. The staff was friendly. The restaurant was clean and looked like it was recently renovated. Prices were super reasonable. Can't wait to go back again, but I'll have to save room for one of their giant cookies! read more

Driven by Mister Jim's for awhile now so we finally decided to give it a try. Decor: Inside it isn't much to write home about but who comes to a Sub Shop for the adornment of its interior. Service: The servers were friendly but the wait was a little long. Sandwich: Having read some of the other reviews I was leaning toward Beef Bacon Cheddar or the Chicken Parmesan. Still my wife and I thought since it was our first time here we'd give the Philly Cheesesteak a try. In hind site it wan't the best choice. The bread wasn't much different than what you'd find at a supermarket. The veggies weren't the typical fixin's for a Philly Cheesesteak and the steak was just Steak-Ums covered with the wrong type of cheese...need I say more. For our side we opted for the onion rings verses the fries. They were good, better than fast food or the greasy battered rings found at most places in Chesapeake but not as good a the rings at the chain restaurant of Red Robin. For desert we tried the Hope's Royal Cookie (coconut, chocolate chip and macadamia nut). It turned out to be the highlight of our meal. Cleanliness: The tables were long benches of linoleum that needed to be wiped down. The floor was equally in need of a sweeping. I didn't go into the restroom so I can't comment. Overall: Despite my hope we'd enjoy Mister Jim's we found it between A-OK and Meh, I've had better. Add in the long wait for our food and the need for the place to get a quick cleaning I'm going to have to lean toward the Meh. That being said I trust both my kids and fellow Yelpers, who both rated it much higher so we'll probably give Mr. Jim's another try...just not the Cheesesteak, that's a BIG NO. Still until I get back to Mr. Jim's I'm sticking with the 2 Star rating. read more

Great sandwiches! This place is a great option if you are looking for a sub-type sandwich. Their offerings range from turkey all the way through steak & cheese. Credit card fraud!! Their credit card machine does not read chip cards so they have you enter the entire credit card number incl expiration date& CVV code in front of EVERYONE!! I have mentioned my concerns to the manager over 2 months ago and they still don't care. They have the newer chip readers but there is a problem they won't get addressed. I can't say enough yummy compliments for this firm...obviously growing up in the area, this is a staple. However she appeared to be impatient that I didn't know the (large) menu. Being from out of town I could have used a little help. I DON'T CARE if you are busy - I'm standing in front of you aren't I? Other problems were entirely missing tsadziki after asking for extra. One of my party asked for a chicken cheesesteak and received beef. It was too crowded so we didn't ask for it to be switched out. I have only one issue for Mr. Jim's: the young ladies behind the register struggle to understand that the customer experience is largely their responsibility. For the second visit in as many weeks, the young ladies seem to dread their job and their demeanor clearly reflected this. This is quite unfortunate since I live right down the road and enjoy the close proximity to grab something other than "Big Chain" food. Maybe require Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People" to be read as a precept to employment; what I experienced is a contradiction to this book. read more

I just moved here from california and I am trying out all the local food joints. Mister Jim's Submarines is a must try. I ordered delivery and it came quick. The delivery fee is only a $1.50 with only a $5 minimum order and they are quick. I order the Philly cheesesteak with onions and provolone and the fiery chicken tenders. The bread was fresh/awesome and home made, the steak was plentiful and fresh as well. The fiery chicken tenders are basically buffalo chicken strips and are very good. The chicken tenders were huge and could be a meal in itself. Good job Mister Jim's I will definitely order from you again! read more

She told me waiting on the small order of steak fries. Finally got my food the fries weren't hot and the toasted grandmaster was cold (it was sitting on the counter waiting for the fries also). This is my favorite sub shop stop. I also love that he employes many neighborhood children. They are always respectful. I went there on Saturday, 12 Sept 2020 at 8:00. They close at 10 pm. We attempted to order a sub from the grill. We were told we couldn't order from the grill because they had to many orders. So the grill was closed. We were welcomed to order a cold sub, which neither of us wanted. So we left, I'm not sure I'll return. One day last week I decided to call in an order to pick up on my way home. After 2 times of letting the phone basically ring off the hook, I decided I would just stop by. After arriving, it took a little over 25 minutes for my order to be ready. Once I arrived home, I found that 1 of my sandwiches was incorrect. I'm usually understanding, but this was basically strike 3 of the incident & I decided to call them to complain. They asked if I were in their delivery area and they would deliver the correct sandwich out to me. Olay, it's only 4 stars because it is just a sandwich shop. This isn't fine dining or unique food. But it is by far the best sub shop I've seen in decades. The Grandmaster / toasted with fried salami is so far above the tasteless franchise shops. And the portions are serious, less money goes to franchise fees so you actually get good instead if a micron thin shaving if meat. This place is a classic. I can't recall another sub shop that I really wanted to visit again like Jim's. If you need fast food, give it a shot. Beware ordering the fries.
