This place used to be one of our favorites in the neighborhood, but I don't know if it's new employees or new management but it's going downhill and not worth it anymore. 1. I don't know if their air conditioning is broken or what, but it is uncomfortably hot in there. The ceiling fans are BARELY blowing which makes me worry about the temperature of the food in the "kitchen". 2.. Ordering a bowl (with rice) used to be something to look forward to. They charge $16 for a surf and turf bowl and now with BARELY any rice!!!!! $16 and you give like 3 grains of rice. Before we used to be able to see the rice in the bowl... now? nothing. 3. Why are you giving people to-go food in a bowl with a top that does not fit? Getting home and the bowl have food falling out of it? That is CRAZY! when I tell the girl at the counter she plays like an airhead and giggles saying "oh I don't order that stuff" so even if you don't order it LET MANAGEMENT KNOW ITS A PROBLEM. And she claims she has but I'm sure that's bs. I asked if a manager was there and she said "well we have one and he's not here". I'm not sure if she's just playing an airhead or really is one. Last time I came in a police officer was in there for clearly and investigation and the same airhead was acting like she doesn't know the managers name. You cannot have someone THAT incompetent being the person your customer interact with! And 4. we used to love ordering the soup as well. Two days in a row (because someone in our home is sick) we ordered the soup and the soup was not at all hot either day!! Before it used to come in a black container and been so nice and hot and good. Now it's $10 for a soup and there's BARELY any soup so $31 for all of this.. and customer service is horrible. There's no way that getting half portions should cost this much! Let's begin by saying this meal was better than any Mexican meal I've eaten in Milwaukee. I know that's a fairly low bar, but after 7 years there I really needed some well made Mexican late night fare. I had a veggie burrito that was really delicious. Fresh, well prepared, and savory. I also downed a bag of tortilla chips and queso. So, in less than 30 minutes I was able to eat all the calories for the whole weekend. And, I don't regret a thing. I have been coming to this restaurant for the last two years with such exceptional, yummy food (steak quesadillas and cheese quesadillas, chips and salsa and great guac) and the people who work there are so kind. Usually, we are coming from Shirley Ryan AbilityLab downtown and my partner is in a wheelchair and numerous times the people who work there have helped us get in the door get a seat get our order and make sure everything is delicious-- And we can get in and out easily. I really enjoyed Mixteco! My first time trying and everything was great. We started with nachos, guac, queso, and taquitos for the table and all were flavorful. For my meal I shared the fire quesadillas which definitely had a kick to them and were delicious! I also tried the chicken tinga tacos which were great. They'll offer you 4 sauces for the table and all were good, my favorite being the habanero. The tres leches is also good for dessert! Mixteco is my go-to place whenever I want to get quick delivery and I know will be tasty. I love getting the grilled chicken burrito because I can easily get two meals out of it if I order the meal or pair it with tortilla chips. Plus I love that it comes with avocado in the burrito and it isn't extra. I have also tried their quesadilla and I was easily able to get two solid meals from the dish without having to get a full meal. I prefer the burrito more but they tend to give a lot of rice so there has been times when the protein settles at the bottom so you don't get a good balance of ingredients. That is the one con of Mixteco Mexican Grill especially if you are paying extra for protein and the rice ratio is still high. The price of the food is pretty reasonable in comparison to what's around the restaurant. The quesadilla was probably the best bang for your buck if you are on a budget. Sometimes when I am feeling like a treat I order a side of churros which are fantastic. They are always fresh and come with a chocolate syrup dipping sauce which is addicting! I went into this expecting quality similar to that of a Moe's or Chipotle, but was left with 3 mouth watering delicious tacos that actually filled me. Interior - Walking in the place was empty (a common theme during these times.) Mixteco had a full staff waiting for empty stomachs. The pale yellow & red walls with wood paneling gives you a feeling of confusion. 3/5 Prices - I ordered ground beef chimichanga which came out to a whopping $12.24 & a fountain soda which was $2.49. Altogether my total was $16.29. The chimichanga doesn't come with any sides like rice or chips either. 3/5 Customer Service - My food was ready within 10 minutes & I didn't have any issues. 5/5 Chimichanga - Presentation - No wonder this thing costs over $12. They put a decent amount of effort into the presentation. There's a level of pride here that's uncommon amongst the fast food industry. The chimichanga was perfectly fried & then plated on a bed of green sauce. Couple that with a sourcre am drizzle & plenty of meat/cheese then I present a near perfect chimichanga. 5/5 Taste - You want this chimichanga to taste as good as it looks, but it falls just short. The meat isn't particularly well seasoned & while it's not bland... it's not very flavorful either. It doesn't help that the green sauce (which you can't really avoid since it's literally on a bed of green sauce) is pretty average as well. Nothing really stands out aside from the guacamole which was great and it culminates into an above average outing. 4/5 Overall Mixteco brings a lot to the table. He loved them--especially the sauce which had a good kick. The bean and cheese burrit was good, but not the standout of the others. Of course, it is just a bean and cheese burrito... MIXING IT UP I think every day should be Taco Tuesday! Why limit yourself to just one day. The staff at Mixteco Mexican Grill is super friendly and really nice. They make it easy to enjoy tacos every single day. The IL governor's office has now issued another no indoor dinning order during this pandemic. I'm very worried for great small businesses like this. We all need to support them through the winter with pickup and delivery. They need more than ever to survive. All of the safety protocols were in place for both the staff and the customers. We felt very safe when we walked in. Ordering is made easy with the large beautiful digital menu boards. This makes it easy to order plus you do not need to touch a paper menu. You can also order online and this option is very detailed...down to customizing your order by adding ingredients like choosing between corn & flour tortillas or even making a dish into a bowl. We tried the pulled chipotle chicken tacos dinner Mexican style (cilantro & onion) and they were excellent. I loved how juicy the shredded chicken was. It was very tasty. I hate when my chicken is dried out. That did not happen here. We also ordered a steak burrito and made it enchilada style which meant it was covered in red sauce and cheese. It was huge and really good. I needed some comfort food and this was satisfying. Both meals also came with rice and beans. I loved the refried beans which came with melted cheese on top. That was a nice touch. The carryout packaging was awesome. It was some of the most thoughtful carryout Mexican food I've ever received. The containers had separators for the beans and rice from the tacos and burritos. The tacos were also placed individually in foil and wax paper. It kept everything nice and neat. We started our feast with some guacamole, red salsa and fresh made chips. I loved how thin the chips were. The best part is that they didn't crumble when I dipped them into the salsa. The red salsa was just perfect and I loved the guacamole. I'd highly recommend ordering both. They also have dessert options here like the usual churro but I needed some tres leches cake in my life. The cake was delicious. There's nothing like yellow cake soaking in three different milks. It is honestly one of my favorite desserts and I couldn't resist. If you have never had this then it's time you tried it. Mixteco Mexican Grill delivers an excellent experience. All of the food was made fresh to order and the cook was super fast. We probably waited less then five minutes after we placed our order. In fact, I saw the cook looking over the shoulder of the cashier, so he could start making our food.
