Continues to be one of my favorite restaurants in the area. Can usually find a spot but would be good to get a reservation especially if a bigger party. The brunch is classic and excellent. Dinner also good and many options.

Mixto has always been one of my favorite restaurants throughout the years and I'm so happy the quality and food hasn't changed. Came here with a few friends and had to visit due to being in the area. First off, their happy hour deals are amazing. I got a red sangria for cheap and then we were promptly sat for our table. The red sangria was super flavorful and worth the price. Service was great. Our waiters were super attentive and fun. We had a blast learning background on them and they were great with our orders. For food, I ordered the Churrasco colombiano with garlic shrimp which was delicious! The steak was cooked to perfection and really flavorful. I also ordered a side of rice and beans which were great. My friends really loved their food too! We also got the ceviche for an appetizer, I loved it but I wish the portion was bigger for the price. The ambiance is amazing and perfect for any occasion. The restaurant is a good size so it's perfect for any party situation. I definitely recommend!

I was in the area and I was hungry so I decided to go to Mixto. When I was seated, I was a little surprised that they had an IPad as the menu instead of a physical menu. My waiter was very informative and helpful with my questions about the ingredients of the dishes I was interested in ordering. He gave me recommendations based on my preference and dietary restrictions. I appreciated how he highlighted authentic dishes. I ended up ordering a chicken empanada and a beef empanada (made in house), and they were delicious. I preferred the chicken empanada over the beef one. Then, for the entree, I ordered the Ropa Vieja. They server recommended getting a side of the hot sauce/salsa and to eat the sauce with the rice and side of beans, or eat the beef with the hot sauce/salsa, which gave a mild but slight kick to the food that I enjoyed. The beef was a little dry but the hot sauce/salsa made up for it. I would come back again to try the brunch :)

Came during a Thursday evening. Happy hour started at 5pm. I had the pincho steak. These were just okay. The Chicken empanadas were really good, the cheese empanada was just okay. They had other HH items which included food and drinks. My friend and I had a pitcher of the caphrihanna. It was just okay. I had the Steak with garlic shrimp. $46. This plate was HUGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. I had more than enough to take home. My friend had lambchops and risotto. The risotta was divineeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. I want some RIGHT NOW. Do they deliver to MD?!?! We had a shot, and shots are delivered in like champagne flutes with lime slices on a wooden board, with salt sprinkled on it. 1 Bathroom stall downstairs. Upstairs bathroom had about 3 stalls. Very tiny Menu is available on paper or on a tablet, where you can digitally see all of the photos of each food item I would def. come back!

It's the empanadas for me! We stopped by yesterday for drinks and some bites before heading to see Hamilton! It was around 5:15 and we were told they had happy hour at the bar until 7. Service here is good. Everyone is attentive and friendly! The happy hour menu is nice. They offer $25 half pitchers of margaritas which is easily shareable for two. We did the classic margarita but for me it wasn't that strong! We ordered a few apps - empanadas (chicken) and it was really good. The guacamole was ok, and it came with a few plantains. We weren't starving so we split an entree - pechuga de pollo with the lemon butter sauce and a side of rice and beans. Was tasty! If I'm in town again I would visit here again!

Mixto Restaurant offers Cuban, Latin American, and Caribbean cuisine at a convenient location near Washington Square. ---- Highlights: The restaurant feels modern and sleek and was very welcoming of an outside cake for our group's (10 people) birthday celebration. However, while our food was in great portion sizes, both the flavor and our service were lacking. ---- For my large party at brunch, Mixto was accommodating to a few latecomers. We were seated by the door, and this placement was not ideal as a wind tunnel is created every time it is opened, which blew strong wind into our faces and knocked over our napkins, both of which were unpleasant. I had the Colombian breakfast (Calendtado). The steak was both well-cooked and well-seasoned but the arepa felt very dry and overcooked! As a general tip, Mixto adds a 2.34% charge to your bill for usage of debit/credit cards. So I would recommend bringing cash, except...my party had a very difficult experience paying in cash, with one of the servers fighting us saying we were short one dollar. And even though we counted in front of them (for the correct amount), the problem was not resolved until a manager counted and indeed confirmed there was never an issue in the beginning. Overall, the experience of fighting over a dollar was unsavory. I'd like to hope my experience was isolated to our large group size.

Had a great time here with a group. Very interesting place. Upstairs area with a mix of real flowers, fake flowers, numerous regal artworks, bar, iPads for menu, etc. I had low expectations for the food so pleasantly surprised.

This was my introduction to the dining experience in Philly. I was staying at a place near by and while looking for something to eat, I first overlooked this place. I went back and looked at the menu and my tune changed! Mofongo, sweet plantains, cuisines with a latin and Caribbean flair?! I was sold. A quick walk and a friendly hostess later, I was seated outside to enjoy the nice weather. For my meal I ordered the Ropa vieja. Additionally, got the maduro relleno (not pictured) to go. The Ropa vieja gave me mixed feelings. The first bite of the beef was disappointing as it was a bit on the dry side especially the bits that weren't in the broth. This did improve as I ate more. The major saving grace for this dish was the yellow rice and sweet plantains. The rice and plantain combination has always been a childhood favorite and they fried these plantains at the best stage of ripeness. The soft, sweetness with the savory of the rice was perfection. Washing this down with a cold presidente was a good recall to living life on an island (how I miss such simplicity). The Maduro relleno on the other hand was so damn good! Admittedly didn't know what I was expecting, but opening the plate to a plantain boat coated with cheese exceeded my expectations! After the first bite, I was happy to be in the privacy of my hotel room to enjoy this. This thing was devoured. My phone definitely could not eat first this time. Overall a good experience for a first meal in Philly after a long morning of traveling. Fair warning (?) there was a 3% or so charge for using my credit card. If you're one who isn't fond of those extra charges, bring some cash along.

We were a dinner party of six. The family members had a funeral to attend the next day. We all wanted to spend time together at a fabulous restaurant. I started out with a pitcher of Blood Orange Mojitos and it was fabulous. I had the seafood soup and it was a 5 out 5. The soup was teaming with tiger shrimp, mussels and clams. Its broth was both fresh and savory. Dinner was the grilled octopus with grilled mixed vegetables. The octopus was not as plump as I have had at other establishments. It could have been seasoned a touch heavier. It relied too much on the melted butter. I would score it a 3 out of 5. Others in party all had different dishes from each other and rated theirs a 5 out of 5 across the board. I did not make it to dessert. We had a wait staff of two and they were attentive, eager to please and enjoyed what they do. Come and Enjoy!!!

Street parking available or parking garage a few blocks away, not a bad walk at all. Made reservations but got there early and was greeted by hostess at stand as we walked in and seated in the upstairs part of the restaurant. They have a full bar and TV's with sporting events playing. Our server was friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu and suggested the fried seafood appetizer which ended up being so good. She check in on our table and made sure we were good. While waiting for our appetizers to arrive we had bread to eat on and wait. While waiting this lady approaches us and asked to take our picture, umm ok. She's flicking away and I wait for her to then try and get money from us nope she says thanks and walks off (I heard her snapping away downstairs). She returns later with 3 photos in a frame and said they were $20 each. I did end up getting on since I was there celebrating but the whole encounter was different, like no communication at all.

Came here to celebrate a friend's birthday. We had the. chicharrones appetizer. I had the lomo saltado. My steak dish was so chewy that it was unappetizing and didn't finish it. The chicharrones were ok. The waitstaff kept trying to upsell add-ons in a way that felt uncomfortable. Overall, underwhelmed.

Now, me being the true man that I am--with hair on my chest, a deep voice, and amazing muscles, can't forget about the skin of bronze--well, just like any man, I love a good sandwich. I got that Cuban sandwich this time, and I would never regret it. The layered meat with the cheese on top was to perfection. The outside of the bread had a crisp crunch, but yet it was soft on the inside. It wasn't too much meat, and it wasn't too much cheese; it was a perfect blend. Then, there was a special sauce--this sauce that they gave me along with the fries. I've had a lot of sauces over the years, and this was the best sauce I've ever had. And I've had a lot of sauces, and I know a lot of sauces, and all the sauces know me as well. I finished it off, of course, with a bottle of cola, because one day I hope to be like Warren Buffett and drink cola every day and hopefully become a billionaire. But until then, I will be constantly eating at this restaurant day in and day out. And of course, my next thing to try is the coffee, because I've noticed they had a beautiful coffee maker right behind the counter. I hope my review helps make your decision on whether you want to eat here or not. Branden-Lee AKA B L E E

Air conditioning was cranked-up high. I was freezing. And music was a bit loud. But we were there for the food. And here's what we thought: ** El Cubano is a pressed Cuban sandwich. I chose it because it came with a salad, what they call 'tropical chips' and a cup of black bean soup. The soup was flavorless, the chips -- are they strips of fried plantain?! -- delicious, and the salad, fine. The sandwich is okay, my husband favoring his more than I did mine. (Good thing cause he's getting the half I didn't eat, for lunch today.) ** The winning dish may be Levanta Muerto Seafood soup with mussels, crabmeat, shrimp, and scallops in a rich broth. ** Sangria is disappointing with barely present, minced fruit. Tasted like cheap and weak red wine. A half pitcher fills about four glasses. When seated, you're presented with a basket of toasted bread and a ramekin of infused butter. It looked like turmeric, but surprised! It was sweet, likely cinnamon-sugar. A nice touch. We arrived literally eight minutes after happy hour, so we missed their discounted drinks. As the server said, we would have had to sit at the bar, which I would have done but my friends likely wouldn't. Oh well. Anyway, service was fine, prices a bit high, food was okay -- doesn't compare to Norcross! -- and reservations strongly suggested.

I will say parking is street parking or side streets and can get a little crazy on weekends. Service is always great and you feel like you are a part of the family here. It's a huge portion so leftovers are always good. My boyfriend always orders their cubano as he said it is the best one he has ever had. Their Maduros are also sweet and crisp and never greasy. We also tried their choripan sandwich and it was awesome. We've never had thinly sliced chorizo which eliminates the usual oil and messiness. Always an amazing meal. I appreciated the complimentary yuca fritters with special sauce, which was a kind gesture. However, the overall quality, freshness, and authenticity of the main dishes did not meet expectations. Parking is very limited street parking. The Cuban breaded steak was the biggest disappointment. A proper Cuban-style breaded steak should be thin, tender, savory, garlicky, slightly citrusy, well-seasoned, evenly breaded, and pan-fried until crisp and golden. The version I received tasted oddly sweet, the breading separated from the meat, and the steak had a gummy texture with an old-looking color. It did not have the freshness or clean savory flavor expected from this classic dish. The red beans were very concerning. They tasted strongly like vinegar, and I had to spit them out. When I looked closer, there appeared to be a white, murky-looking substance in them. Beans should never taste sour or vinegary unless something is wrong. Cuban-style red beans should be creamy, savory, aromatic, and well-seasoned with garlic, onion, peppers, cumin, oregano, and bay leaves. The white rice was also not acceptable. It was hard, did not taste fresh, and had a vinegar-like smell and flavor. It appeared as if older rice may have been mixed with newer rice. Proper Cuban white rice should be fluffy, clean-tasting, separated, and neutral in flavor. The moro with black beans and rice was better than the white rice, but still lacked depth. It needed more bay leaf flavor and stronger Cuban seasoning. A good moro should have a rich, savory base from sofrito, garlic, peppers, onions, beans, broth, herbs, and slow cooking so the rice absorbs the flavor. The oxtail was tender and okay, but it did not fully deliver the deep, rich Cuban-style flavor I expected. Traditional Cuban oxtail should be slow-braised with garlic, onions, peppers, tomato sauce, wine, herbs, and spices until the sauce becomes rich and the meat is deeply seasoned. This oxtail tasted acceptable, but it seemed as though it may have been prepared a day or two before and reheated. I understand that many restaurants legally prepare certain foods a day ahead, especially dishes like beans, stews, and oxtail. However, food should still taste fresh and be stored, cooled, reheated, and handled according to food safety standards. Sour or vinegar-like flavors in rice or beans can sometimes indicate fermentation, spoilage, or improper storage, and that should never reach the customer. The best part of the meal was the dessert. The vanilla flan was very good, and the coconut flan was excellent. The coconut flan was rich, creamy, and full of coconut flavor, with shredded coconut pieces that added texture and made it stand out. That dessert showed real potential. The prices were reasonable, but reasonable pricing does not make up for poor freshness and low food quality. It did look like they may do better with sandwiches and empanadas, which I did not try and perhaps should have ordered first. I cook Cuban food, Puerto Rican food, and other traditional dishes myself, and I lived in Miami for over nine years. I also learned from Cuban friends who cook authentic Cuban food at home. Because of that, I know how these dishes should taste. In my opinion, the dishes I tried did not represent Cuban cuisine with the freshness, authenticity, seasoning, or care it deserves. The restaurant may have people who know how to cook, but based on this visit, it seems the kitchen has lost some of the authenticity and discipline needed to serve fresh, properly prepared Cuban food. Food that tastes sour, vinegary, old, or questionable should never be served to customers. The service and desserts were the highlights, but the main dishes need serious improvement in freshness, food handling, seasoning, and respect for authentic Cuban cuisine. There are several areas that need improvement. Freshness and food safety should be the main priority. Rice and beans should never taste sour or vinegary unless intentionally prepared that way, and food that seems old or questionable should not be served. The breaded steak should be freshly breaded, crispy outside, tender inside, and properly seasoned with authentic Cuban flavors like garlic, citrus, cumin, oregano, and bay leaves. The rice should be fluffy, the beans creamy, and the oxtail deeply seasoned and fresh-tasting. I believe the restaurant may have cooks who understand Cuban cuisine, but the kitchen needs to reconnect with freshness, consistency, authenticity, and stronger food handling standards. Cuban food is rich in flavor, comfort, and cultural pride, and with improvement this restaurant could better reflect that tradition.
