I was eager to find a Peruvian restaurant in Philly and came to Vista Peru with a group on a Sunday evening. It was easy to make a reservation for the time we wanted. The main dining room is pretty narrow without much in the way of decor, and I think more could be done to help the space pop, but as always the food is my main concern in the end. The complimentary crunchy corn snack for the table was a nice surprise! We ordered an app, a ceviche, and four entrees to share between the six of us and found that plenty filling. The Yuca Frita app was tasty with a delicious dip we held on to, but I wish it came with more as six pieces felt small for the price. The Ceviche Mixto was a more solid portion with a great variety of seafood; it was on the tart side but came with a really nice cilantro sauce that the table ate clean. Out of our entrees, the Lomo Saltado was the highlight with well-cooked and tender chunks of steak and yummy fries (simple, I know). The Pescado a Lo Macho and Arroz con Mariscos were very generous portions with a ton of various seafood; even the fried fish dish came with shrimp, mussels, and scallops on top. The Aji de Gallina was maybe the least noteworthy entree, a chicken stew with cassava and rice, but even that was hearty and filling. Service was good throughout with plenty of water refills, and the cost was surprisingly reasonable for what we ordered. I'd definitely recommend this place for seafood lovers, and I'd be interested in coming back to try the roast chicken and to have the lomo saltado and ceviche again! read more

As a Peruvian, I was very disappointed with the food. The anticucho was especially surprising because traditional anticucho is made from beef heart, but what I received appeared to be liver instead. If that was the case, it should have been clearly stated on the menu. The ceviche was also disappointing and did not taste fresh or authentic. The pollo a la brasa lacked the traditional seasoning and seemed to be seasoned with little more than salt and pepper. Overall, the food was mediocre and did not reflect the flavors and quality I would expect from Peruvian cuisine. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this restaurant. Save your money and consider other options. I cannot comment on the service or ambiance since I ordered online and did not dine in. read more

I rated it 3 stars because it's too overpriced especially that chicha morada that is from power and not fresh made. This was the second time I've been to Vista Peru, and I was even more impressed! The Causa Acevichada was INCREDIBLE and we loved the Mazamorra Morada dessert (not pictured) way more than we had anticipated. It was a hot jelly like dish (purple corn pudding technically) sprinkled with cinnamon and made with pineapple, cherries, and lime juice I believe. Not too sweet! Their rice and ceviche dishes are great too, and I'm also a fan of their pisco sour. Service is kind and was patient with us! Overall I had a solid meal at Vista Peru, the food itself was pretty good my experience was overall kind of a mixed bag. I'd say this was 3/5, met my expectations but didn't exceed them. The first thing was the service was way below average. The sign at the front says to wait for host to seat you and I stood at the door while 3 different servers went about their day and none came over to help. Maybe 10 mins later a party of 3 came in behind me and also awkwardly waited until we all kind of wandered towards the bar where they finally took notice and sat everyone. The restaurant is split with the bar area and some small seats and a back area with booths and bigger tables. I was sat in the front as I dined alone. This may have been part of the problem - the service was really lacking, I ran out of water twice with long waits for refills. I asked for tostones with my meal and never received them... before I had finished my meal the waitress brought out to go boxes for me. I felt rushed out. Most of the other diners spoke in Spanish and I did feel like I was intruding on the staff by speaking only English. Atmosphere is nice, except the fact I got say at a table that's legs were so uneven my drink spilled. Not great. Other than that it feels classy inside and the music is nice. I had the combinación with ceviche and seafood paella. The ceviche was fantastic, very fresh and sour and delicious. The paella was just okay - the mussels were very rubbery and fishy and all three had gritty sand in them, Im not sure they were washed properly. The portion of the seafood was VERY generous and it was plenty of food. However, the shrimp was also fishy and tough. I'm not sure if it was frozen but however it was stored it was definitely cooked too long and came out rubbery. Not my favorite. The rice itself was cooked fine, seasoning and flavor was good. I ordered flan to go and it was really good. Overall a very mixed experience. I did get out for about $42 for entree and dessert which was fine but not great. The food was really delicious here, and I'm glad I went here for my first time trying Peruvian food. This restaurant was recommended to me by my Peruvian friend. My favorite dish was definitely the arroz chaufa de lomo a lo pobre. The steak was extremely tender and juicy and the rice was so flavorful. I also love plantains so that was nice to have. The Pulpo a la parrilla was my second favorite dish I tried, the octopus was super tender and really tasty. The Pollo a la Braza was also good. I did not expect the Pargo a la plancha to have a tomato based soup, but it was decent. A+ service, stupid good food, and a simple but welcoming atmosphere make this place one of the best I've ever been to. And I'm not exaggerating. From the moment we walked in--in fact, from the moment before we walked in, we knew this was the perfect place. These days, we travel with a 9-month-old and a heavy, bulky stroller. We're well aware that our semi-truck of a stroller can't go everywhere, so we trepidatiously waited on the street to assess the situation before going in. But we were interrupted by a member of the staff, who not only welcomed us in but helped bring our Abrams tank stroller into the restaurant. The staff is incredibly accommodating, and every measure should be taken to ensure they are well compensated for their troubles. Now, if you're not familiar with Peruvian cuisine or the Spanish language, you're in luck, because it turns out any dish you order will be a winner. Their calamari is literally the best I've ever had, and I've had a lot of calamari. The lomo saltado is inspired. The goat dish whose name I can't remember is epic (and interestingly not unlike some of the goat stews prepared in Kenya). Coupled with some excellent by-the-glass wine pours, you've got yourself a feast to die for. I am usually against music being played in restaurants, where the quality of the conversation can suffer from a pounding bass beat or mis-timed track change; however, the (what I can only assume is) traditional Peruvian music playing over the PA adds to the experience, especially in contrast to the modernist/minimalist design of the dining room. The reason I'm leaving a 1 star review isn't because of the food or service, but because of how they handled the tip. They automatically added a 20% gratuity to the bill (we are a party of 3, if it is more than 5 then that's no issue) without saying anything, and it wasn't mentioned on the menu either. I usually tip that much (or more), so that's not the issue -- it's the fact that they just added it without telling us, and then still gave an option to tip again at the end like nothing was added. I came to Vista Peru for lunch with two other people. We did not have a reservation but easily found a table at around 2:30 pm on a Saturday. This is a very cozy and casual restaurant in Old City. It felt very family friendly since it was so spacious with plenty of seating. Our waiter came by very quickly to get our orders for drinks and food and also brought some complimentary crunchy, toasted corn to snack on while we waited which was very good! We all ordered pisco sours which were pretty delicious- they had a generous amount of thick foam on top, were well decorated, and had a perfect balance of mild sweetness and sour flavors with alcohol that was not overpowering. For food we ordered: Ceviche clasico: ordered two of these, one with mild spicy level and one with no spice. This was a very good dish! The portion was generous and came with many flavorful chunks of white fish that was perfectly marinated in the "leche de Tigre." Well salted and nicely complemented by the plantain chips on the side as well as the corn and sweet potato slice. Did not try the spicy one but apparently it was not too strong and had a perfect subtle kick to it. Would recommend if you are a ceviche fan! Lomo saltado: my friend ordered this dish and she said she loved it! Comes with a lot of steak that is well cooked and very flavorful. Also includes some rice and fries which makes it a very substantial and filling dish! Just for reference, my friend is Colombian and she has very high standards for steak and really liked her meal. This is a hidden gem in old city. We came here for the Super Bowl and they truly went above and beyond with service! We did not have reservations, came around 4:45, and they let us stay for the entire game. Our server was so attentive and made sure we always had drinks and food throughout the night. It felt like we were at a family gathering with great food! We had the causas acevichada, which was seasoned mashed potatoes with ceviche, the seafood soup, and flan. Wow what a gem of a find! We had just finished suit shopping and wanted to get an early dinner/late lunch since we were in the city. Decided to try something new so we landed here. The menu appealed to us as we both really love pulpo and there were quite a few options on the menu for that. The restaurant is very cute and like most restaurants in Philly there really isn't a lot of room so their bar is in the front and the dining area is towards the back. Very nice layout and the spacing between the tables was great. Mostly two to four tops and I noticed two larger tables situated one in the back and one in the front of the dining area. The clientele was mainly IMO Spanish speaking. So for me that was a great indication that we so chose correctly! Our server was great for suggesting entrees when we couldn't decide between dishes. We started with calamari which I will say wasn't any different than what you get from all restaurant menus but I will say that theirs was on the top for light batter n crispiness just how I like it. The accompanying aioli was really good though I was looking for that wedge of lemon to add a bit of acidity. Our entrees were the seafood lobster paella and the grilled pulpo. I'll start with the grilled pulpo - for those of you wondering what pulpo is its octopus. The flavor profile of the pulpo was soooo good. I personally would've like to see it really grilled a bit more so have that smokiness flavor to make it really pop. We both agreed that it could be a lil more tender but mind you it wasn't chewy or tough by any means. My fiancé indicated that the potatoes that accompanied it was less than stellar but all the other veggies shared in the same great flavor of the pulpo. I don't like potatoes so I can't weigh in on that but they did look quite bland. Let's get to what I felt was the star dish in today's dining adventure ... the paella. First the aroma is bar none one of my favorite smells the sweet aroma of saffron! It's up there with garlic in olive oil originating from Italian restaurants. The presentation and the abundance of all that seafood satisfied that "eyes bigger than your stomach" concept. Visually appealing and the taste was just as satisfying. While you can only see the pool of shrimp and the lobster round the sides of the bowl buried underneath were the mussels and clams and plenty of that golden rice that has absorbed all the yummy goodness of those saffron threads. Oh how I love thee paella. This has got to be one of my favorites aside from my own homemade version. Every time I have this I'm always regretting the miss in London's Borough market but I digress. Hopefully you get the picture that this is a must try paella if you are a fan. If not it's definitely worth a try and you'll be sure to be hooked. Lastly, we had the flan sadly to my disappointment this was not the warmed version. But it was good. I had my hopes set on it being warm ... this is where our inability to have another language under our belt was a minor problem in communicating my ask about the temperature. C'est la vie. Vista Peru is a super interesting find. Like other reviewers, we found ourselves in Vista Peru because we wanted something different. Peruvian cuisine isn't something readily available where we live, so we really viewed this as an opportunity to go outside the box. The interior has a cool vibe. It was initially quite hard to find (as it was blocked by construction), so if that construction is still up, just stay patient while you're looking for it. You can make reservations online, which is of course so appreciated in busy Philadelphia. I wish the staff was a bit more helpful and talkative with suggestions, but I get that people are exhausted right now. The food and drink is outstanding here! We started with a well-made Pisco Sour, which was created by a skilled bartender. We started with a ceviche appetizer (a necessity in a Peruvian restaurant). Rice and seafood were all cooked well, but again a bit salty. Lomo saltado over risotto-very flavorful and the meat was cooked as ordered, could have been a little more tender, though. All main portions were generous. Service: Gabi was a good waitress.
