The duality of the place is exceptional because you can get customized malatang with all the add ins you could want but also a whole chicken, shrimp burger, and even chicken feet. One of my biggest pro tips is getting their spicy chicken rolls for the plane when traveling. It's super compact, can last overnight, and is flavorful without having a strong smell. I'm also a big big fan of the spicy chicken sandwich which is pretty simple with just lettuce added on but so good. Don't miss out on the popcorn chicken either. My partner and I came by overlord chicken after I mentioned repeatedly that I would like to try their fried chicken & mala tang again. Service is good, more self service leaning, you just go and order at the counter and cashier will bring the order to you. The mala tang process goes, grab a bowl, pick out desired items, choose broth & spice level, they will weight, you pay, they prep and bring it out. Their selections for the mala tang is less than before and is now 19.99/LBS, with a 0.9lbs minimum. We got the traditional spicy level 2 and it was solid, not too spicy and good to enjoy and even drink the broth. We also got one spicy chicken leg and 2 drumsticks. Mixed bag... We came here because a rave review from a YouTuber. Good news is their Combo #6 is a great deal which is more than enough food for 3 for less than $60. This comes with popcorn chicken, strips, sandwiches whole fried chicken fries and drinks. Out of all of the food, chicken sandwich is hands down the best. Drove along Kapahulu Ave and noticed the signs for Mala Tang at 'Overlord Fried Chicken'. We wanted to try and found street parking - a stall available right in front. It was our first time there, so we took time to figure out the picture menus and concept for the Mala Tang. Slight language barrier with the worker but we ordered 2 bowls of Mala Tang with fried chicken & sausages to share. Asian bottled drinks available in the fridge. I rediscovered the most delicious broth known to mankind! If you remember a place called Yi Pin Mala Tang in Test Kitchen at McCully Shopping Center, they are now located in Overlord Chicken! I loved going to Yi because in addition to selecting your own ingredients (meats, veggies, etc.), you got to select among a few delicious broth options. In my opinion, the traditional broth is otherworldly tasty! I recently visited this restaurant and got to have my user-friendly hot pot bowl along with some yummy popcorn chicken. The build-your-own bowl was as good as I remembered. The chicken was also fresh, crispy, and delicious! Pro tip for selecting your broth spice level, if in doubt, ask for the spice on the side. Like anywhere in Kapahulu, parking is a bit tricky, but I was able to snag a parallel space right in front of the restaurant. One of my FAVORITE restaurants! I personally love mala and anything Chinese herb (numbing sensation) so I was happy to find out that they reopened in Kapahulu. The restaurant is joint with the Overlord Chicken. Parking is available on Kapahulu or we usually find a spot on Date street and walk over. The ingredients seem to be fresh every time we go in and the service is quick and friendly. They charge you by the weight (you choose what to put in your soup) and for a pretty big amount, we were charged about $20 per person. I decided to check this place out today at 6PM and had a great experience! The staff are very sweet and helpful. I had to wait for a table, but the staff kindly gave me a lollipop for waiting lol. Good amount of toppings to choose from, but in the future I hope to see more meat options. My bowl weighed a bit under 0.9lbs, and I paid $16.20. I had level 1 spiciness of the traditional broth. Overlord chicken opened a couple years ago on Kapahulu where a Thai restaurant used to be. It's pretty conveniently located for me, or anyone else traveling into Waikiki on the Kapahulu side, but there is no parking. There are maybe 5 street parking stalls that are free, so I only have been to Overlord chicken a couple times when I was able to snag a parking spot. The great thing about this place is that they're open late. I believe they're open past midnight, which is basically unheard of in the Hawaii restaurant scene. Would you call this a restaurant? It's more like a take out place that happens to have some tables and chairs. I also like that they have milk tea and fruit teas in addition to fountain drinks. In my most recent visit, I got the combo 4. Mostly because it didn't come with a fountain drink and I knew I wanted to get an iced tea. Secondly, combo 4 comes with a bunch of different things to try and I love trying all the things. The popcorn chicken and chicken tenders tasted pretty much the same... I'd get those again. I liked dipping them in the spicy powder. The wings were also good. The non battered wings had an interesting, slightly spicy flavor. I liked the variety in combo 4, but my husband wants to try the chicken sandwich next time we go :) I also got a side of the spicy sausage skewers. It came with 3 sticks and the sauce was kind of like a sweet ketchup? It wasn't very spicy. I'll probably pass on this next time. The lychee Jasmine tea was good. A little s wet but I liked the lychee jellies and canned lychee fruit. The food took about 15 minutes to prepare. I would have called in my order, but I wanted to see the real menu before I went in. I noticed some of the sides and drinks were different from the posted menu. The prices were also different. My only gripe about this place is that there are hardly prices anywhere. Such a funny name but the chicken was seriously good. I've had the fried whole chicken (I asked them to cut it for me) and it was cut in quarters. Tender and juicy chicken that cooked to order (it would take 15 minutes) but it was worth the wait. But don't let that stop you as they may very well be the Overlord of Chinese style fried chicken in Hawaii. Besides fried chicken (grilled is an option), there's sandwiches (fish and shrimp available), wraps, and fried skewers. There are combo meals. The best one of you want to try most of their chicken items is #4. You get 4 Spicy Chicken Wings, 4 Grilled Chicken Wings, Popcorn Chicken, and Chicken Tenders (no soda). The Spicy Wings were good. A really nice spice kick, and the chicken meat is juicy, tender, meaty, and tasty. Battered and fried very well to a nice crunch. Look out Popeyes! I like the Grilled Wings better. Quite tasty and flavorful with the meat tender and juicy. Chicken Tenders were okay. Least favorite. Not much meat, not much taste, dry, and more batter than meat. Best was the Popcorn Chicken. These are usually dry and bland at other places, but the one here was tasty and flavorful. The meat was warm and tender. Also had a nice spice kick. The Chicken rolls was good nothing I'd really get again it came with a couple of tenders lettuce and tomatoes...no sauce which is probably what the ketchup packets given was for I assume but did remember they had some BBQ sauce and ranch at the condiments area so it was my haste and not asking it had some sauce. Discovered this place via yelp, and decided to give it a try, as my friend was craving fried chicken. I ordered 2 spicy wings, spicy popcorn chicken, and Jasmine lychee tea. The food came out relatively quickly, and it was piping hot when it arrived. The chicken was very crispy. My only complaint is that it wasn't very spicy and lacked flavor. Popeyes is right across the street, and I'd prefer a chicken wing or drumstick from them instead for the spice. That said, the chicken here is a good price. The Jasmine lychee tea was mid. So glad we did! Overlord Chicken has now earned a place in my top few fried chicken places! Four of us arrived and ordered the combo #4 which is THE PERFECT combo for sampling. We enjoyed trying the regular chicken wings, the grilled (BBQ) chicken wings, chicken tenders and the milder popcorn chicken. All delicious. All super crunchy. The chicken tenders with a panko crusted crunch. Full of flavor. The chicken is tender, moist, CRISPY yet not oily. Love that the chicken is nicely seasoned but not as salty as some others. Love also that there are a few tables/seats, nice strong air-conditioning, and restrooms on premise. The only thing little lacking is only street/metered and residential parking. Small problem. It's Kapahulu, the East gateway to Waikiki! Located just across the street from Popeyes. The convenient late closing hours makes this the perfect place to grab a bite almost any time of the day/evening! read more

Simple hole in the wall joint, amazing soup!!! Just go there!! It's by weight and mine ended up being like $30 because I went a little crazy and also got the already soaked rice noodles which probably added a lot of weight but I really don't care because it was worth it and I have an entire bowl leftover anyway. I'm very glad this is down the street from my house, I will be going frequently. read more

I've been wanting to try this place for a while and I'm glad I stopped by! I ordered combo #4 and the chicken is so juicy and fresh! I love the popcorn chicken bc it's bite sized and literally a quality piece of chicken compared to chicken nuggets. Overlord Chicken is located on Kapahulu (across from Taco Bell). This Chinese chicken place serves an assortment of fried chicken and grilled chicken as well. I have tried a lot of their things already and I was surprised how crispy and tasty their chicken is. Some of my favorites are the popcorn chicken, chicken fillets (taste like chicken katsu), Overlord chicken (whole fried chicken) and their shrimp burger. You also get dipping sauces and spices. I thought the prices are pretty reasonable and they make it fresh which is why it can take a little long sometimes. They're open late till 2am which is awesome because we're always looking for a late night spot to grab food. Customer service is friendly and the place is nice and clean. Seating is available inside. Only downfall is the parking which is just street parking. Thankfully we were able to find one pretty easily. read more
