I rarely write any reviews. We all ordered the furikake chicken. It's good! My son loves the fried chicken plate. For the price of $15 for a lunch plate nowadays isn't heard of, rarely. They give quite a bit of chicken plus two scoops of rice and a side. Very good deal for the price you pay and the chicken plates has tasted great! However, the reason I did give 4/5 stars instead of 5/5 was because someone with me that day stated she had the hamburger steak plate and it wasn't very good, warned me not to order it. She did not say anything about the hamburger steak plate and how "junk" it is at that time while standing in line to order with so many customers around. Did not feel it was the right time to say something negative about one plate however personally true to her so it's why partly wanted to let people know on this review to maybe rethink about ordering the hamburger steak plate. Or order it and see as everybody has their own individual tastes. Overall, KJs has always been a place to eat with great value for good food. read more

stopped by on the way to our annual camp. picked up foods for us and friends. Wanted fish so asked for mahi. She said we're out of mahi, we only have it sauteed. Pretty sure mahi is still mahi regardless of how you cook it. I wanted sauteed so that worked out...I think you have to eat it fresh tho. It was so dry and overcooked by the time we got to camp...sauce tasty but fish inedible. Also got a mini bento A so could share everything with baby. We ate some of that. Hubs liked his furikake/FC mix, but said next time no furikake. He just likes the FC way better. Friends got cheeseburger, and chicken plates and bentos...everyone happy. Got fries for the road trip...that was a good move on my part. YUM. Skinny fries cooked perfectly. What gets me every time are all those goodies in front. When my brother asks if I want something from here, it's never a "nah". The furikake chicken is pure comfort on the crunchiest level. I like their way of Mac salad - noodle style with canned tuna. They know what they're doing. I will update my review with photos next time... I never remember to take one because as soon as I open my takeout box, I don't think of anything else and I attack. The fried chicken itself is a definite must and if you see that block of banana bread within arm's reach, and you're asking yourself, "Should I...?" Answer is always, "yah". read more

I was in Kaneohe to help my parents and on my way back to town, I needed to eat. I remember someone mentioning KJs, and I went to check them out. I really didn't know what to get. A woman who kinda cut in front of me, but only because I was off to the side trying to decide, said whatever I chose would be good. I decided on the chicken katsu. Me: What's the difference between the katsu and the katsu cutlet She: The cutlet has gravy. Sold! I ordered a regular with double mac salad. That was one of the things I remembered. They use spaghetti and there's also tuna. This reminds me of how my dad would make this once in a while. It was all soooooooo ONOOOOO! Though I probably should've asked for extra gravy on the cutlets and rice. I thanked the workers and then one of them said... "All the ones pictured up there are the best sellers.' Me: Then why did you let me order the cutlet? (it's not pictured) I was just kidding! But she said the fried chicken was their most popular, and for good reason. It usually sells out. After the beach we stopped here since it was recommended by one of the locas,and glad we did. Tucked in a plaza is this small restaurant and they were serving up some good yummy food. Super fast service. Walk up order and we got mini plate for $11,we got fried chicken(came with 2) mac salad and rice. For a mini the portion was big. Enjoying the old school grindz. This time, a decades old, family run plate lunch spot that specializes in fried chicken. First, like start one fight. KJ's bone in fried chicken thighs is better than Ray's. Freshly fried, crisp crackling skin, well seasoned, extremely moist inside. The moisture and seasoning all the way through implies brining before being dredged in flour and deep fried. The boneless furikake chicken is as good as everyone says. Not as moist inside but the dip in dark sweet soy makes up for it. The generous dusting of furikake does put the sodium over the top. Get plenty rice and tuna spaghetti salad to tone it down. Leftover chicken makes a great salad topping. Slight miss, the roast pork. Oddly under seasoned, extremely fatty and swimming in a broken gravy. $11 for choke pork, no complaints. Take it home, wash it off, sauté and re-season, squeeze on some ketchup for gravy, pau. Tip: check out their counter for fresh baked banana bread, house made okoshi and other snacks. Inexpensive. A giant fried chicken thigh, hotdog and scoop of rice for $5? Regular, massive, need rubber band to hold it closed, plates, $15. Family owned and run for decades and still going strong. On the way to the beach and was craving fried chicken so decided to swing by KJ's. The line was out the door! Did they blow up on social media or something? Idk, but It took forever to get our food and they ran out of rice right after I ordered (additional 20 min wait for the rice to finish cooking). Got the furikake chicken - flavor is really good but after a couple bites it was too sweet. The spaghetti mac salad really helped balance the flavors. I also got fried chicken - two thighs, the seasoning was tasty and it was fresh. They used to give way more chicken but it was kinda too much, this is a good portion now. Anywho if you love fried chicken it's worth checking out if you are in the area. read more

Ordered the two-choice mochiko chicken and their infamous fried chicken plate to share with my kid, and everything came out hot and fresh. My friends got the roast pork and garlic chicken plates, and I was able to sample both which were pretty good and flavorful! There are only about three areas of tables that were bunched up together for dining in, but you can separate them if needed so smaller groups can still sit and enjoy their meal. They also have a self-serve soda fountain and a bunch of goodies and homemade snacks for purchase, which was a nice touch. I only noticed afterward that if you pay with cash, you get an additional discount 3% off your bill. That's something good to know for next time! read more

I love this place. Whenever I'm on the windward side I'll stop in and grab a fried chicken plate before heading back home over the mountain. Today I wanted to try different things so I decided to get a couple combo plates. Hamburger steak with fried chicken and hamburger steak with furikake chicken because the garlic chicken was sold out. I've read that the furikake chicken was one of the most popular plates. Let me just start by saying this, we do not share hamburger steak plate in this house because I would feel bad if I had more than 2 bites. That being said, you could actually share a hamburger steak combo! The burger needed salt but the quality was there! It is one thick hamburger patty of solid meat/protein! It's not a bread burger! The fried chicken is always fried to perfection. It's crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The furikake was yummy. I can understand the hype. It's not something I can get everywhere. I would highly recommend eating here. The prices are very affordable. You could even share 1 plate. Just cook rice at home and ask for double Mac salad. It's definitely enough to feed 2 people. Each person would have a Mac salad, half a burger and 1 pc of chicken. Every piece of protein is big! I say this because I could only eat half of my plate and I don't do small portions. well ok. My husband really wanted to try this place so we stopped by for a late lunch. The staff were really nice and patient with us as we looked through the menu and decided what we wanted to eat. My husband decided to get the garlic chicken with all rice and I ended up getting a cheeseburger with french fries since they were out of mochiko chicken and roast pork; my two choices lol. We didn't have to wait long for our food and everything came out nice and hot. If you love the taste of a sweeter garlicky sauce, you'll love this plate. My husband and I love garlic but the sauce was a little too sweet for our liking. The cheeseburger was okay, and the French fries were nice and crispy but I prefer thick fries.. these were really thin. All in all, this place had great service and pretty good food. Sooo this might seem a little crazy but this was my first time here and I've been told mine times that this spot has some ono chicken and I'm really surprised that it took me this long to try this place. The place is kind of small they have tables but not a lot but if you share you can find a seat next to someone. We were lucky enough to get a spot on a table so we ate in. I got the regular garlic chicken plate with Mac salad bruh I got to say this plate was big and had a lot of chicken. I couldn't even finish the plate and trust me I usually I'm able to. One of the favorite Kaneohe spots for most people. Been here a few times and finally doing a review haha. The order: Son son. Mini bento with furikake chicken and hot dog. Based on results son son ate almost all his chicken, so safe to say it was a hit. Great crunch and flavor. Daddy. Pork adobo gravy on the rice. I was excited for it as it was the gravyish type sauce. It was good but it had a different sweet almost tangy maybe a bit spice flavor. So I was undecided if I love it or it's ok haha. I did eat it all though haha. The Mac salad reminds me of my old school grandma style with tuna in it. So that was good as reminded me of her. Our food came out quick and eating in the cooo ac was nice in a hot day. My wife picked up chicken today from KJ's. She tried calling but they don't answer. It seems they never answer their phone. I was there once and the kids behind the counter was talking then the phone started ringing. No one picked it up, not good. Hard to find good help now a days. Strike One... We ordered three plates, one with corn and two with Mac salad. They gave us two with corn and one with Mac salad. Before there was an elderly woman who would check the order then check to see if the order was right. Not no more. Strike two... I would always stop by KJ's growing up, the fried chx is legendary (used to be 5pc for $5) - but still one of the best at around $15. Spaghetti Mac salad is a must! - I change it up now with roast pork, furikake chx and garlic chx - but the fried chx will always be a favorite lunch. read more

KJ's Local Grindz is a staple in Kaneohe located inside the Windward City Shopping Center. They have been there forever and specialize in fried chicken. Of course, they also offer other local favorites but you have to try their fried chicken. It's not often that I'm in Kaneohe so when I'm there and have time to stop by, it's a nice treat. I feel like it was better back in the day but I could be old and senile. They make everything to order so phone orders are recommended if you're on a time crunch because they are popular and busy! I usually get their two choice entree and rotate between their Furikake Chicken, Garlic Chicken and Mochiko Chicken. The plate comes with two scoops of rice and a side of your choice. I usually get it to go and the chicken is still crispy about 45 minutes to an hour after I leave and can eat it. It's even better when you eat it there. They can accommodate small to medium size parties but you could connect a few tables if you have a large group. Friendly customer service and very affordable food that's good. My husband had coconut shrimp which was exceptional, but they are always running out of stuff. We were there at 11:30 and they were out of 4 things and we ate it there and they ran out of something else. Service took a little bit but manageable. Was skeptical to give KJ's a try again after all these years, as I heard the quality went down. Tried to call and place a phone order, but I don't think they take phone orders. I went around 12:00pm on a Saturday and there was a line of people waiting to order and people eating inside as well. There's only a few small tables inside, so I would recommend taking your food to go & eating somewhere nearby. The food was still good in my opinion! Came here for the first time. I had a gathering nearby so I phone ordered some catering a few days ago and my friend picked it up for me on time. I ordered the pan of fried chicken and a pan of fried furikake chicken. Another friend who I was also meeting up with, ordered a pan of their tuna spaghetti salad as well. It's like a mac salad, but with spaghetti noodles instead of macaroni elbows, and mixed with some tuna. Sounds weird, but it was very delicious. Their furikake chicken was amazing, really juicy and flavorful. Their plain fried chicken was pretty good, but I think the flavored chickens are waaaay better. They also have a garlic chicken as well which I'd order if I'm ever back home in Hawaii Nei. Overall, these 2 pans were approximately 40 chickens for $137. Super expensive, but very delicious. Staff is super nice. I love coming here for lunch when I'm in the area! I had Kalbi Deluxe plate and the furikake chicken another time - so Ono! Plate lunches are generous and filling - we always leave fully satisfied! I'm literally eating the furikake chicken as I type this review. It's everything it's hyped up to be. Mind you... this plate lunch costs $15 and when a plate lunch for chicken costs that much it better be fire. They give pretty good amount of deliciously cooked fried chicken with a shoyu garlic sweet sauce. I don't know why local people love spaghetti noodle Mac salad but we just do and their salad was a perfect edition to a local plate lunch. Well... it was gone in minutes and my kids can't enough of it. Next time I will ask for EXTRA sauce in the side for dipping. read more

So ono! I ordered the garlic chicken, mochico chicken, a cheese burger and fries. It was all so good. The garlic chicken had plenty of flavor, it was still nice and crispy even with all that garlic yummyness. The mochico chicken was good too light tasty batter with a light crunch. It can with rice and mac salad, use spaghetti noodles (back in the day style), so ono!
