DO NOT GO TO MJ AUTOMOTIVE! TLDR: MJ verbally and physically assaults his customers. I had taken my van into MJ to change out the alternator. It also needed a SMOG check. When I went to go pick up the car, MJ told me that he was not able to do the SMOG check since the car had been recently jump started. In hindsight, this was obvious since I was having alternator issues. He charged me for the SMOG check even though he should have been aware that the car could not be checked in the state it was in. He told me to drive 100miles and I could come back for a re-test. Ok, fine. The next week we took a drive to Lake Tahoe and back. That should have been way more miles than was needed. However, when we went back, he told us that we did not drive enough and that we had to drive at least another 50 miles. It was 2 weeks before we were able to get back for another test. It was at this point that he refused to do another test for us. This first check was on him. He should have known that it was not testable. We drove over 3 times the requested miles for the re-test and he said it was still not testable. Now he refuses to re-test the car unless we pay for a new test!? As if that was not enough, when my wife took the car there for the 3rd time, he verbally and physically assaulted my wife! As anyone would she disagreed about having to pay again for a re-test since we did everything he asked of us. MJ decided to threaten my wife and pushed her until she left the premise. The owner has assaulted me yesterday after an argument with a service on my car! As a result if the assault, I fell to the ground and experienced a panic attack, felt sudden tightness of my chest. As I lay on the ground hyperventilating and gasping for air, he did nothing even shouting for help to get my medication a nitro thatcwas in my car. For almost 10 minutes he did nothing. Luckily a man approached me and asked if I need help. He called 911 right away and was taken to the Kaiser ER for evaluation and treatment. Honestly, not sure how this guys business is still standing let alone how he has a 3.5 rating AND how he's been in business 30 years. His customer service skills are terrible and I'm sure it's because of the language barrier but at some point you have to know that talking to your paying customers disrespectfully is NOT okay. My dad goes to this mechanic because he's cheaper than most in the area and I needed a new air compressor for my AC since it was weak. We went to see him twice in the last year and all he did was recharge and check the AC. He charged $175 both times instead of telling us to just replace the compressor, so it was obviously a money grab. He quoted almost 1k to replace it, labor included and asked us to come on a Tuesday before 8:30. We get there around 8:15 and he doesn't show up until 8:35. We give the keys, and he doesn't give an estimated time on how long it will take to finish he just says "I'll call you". I'm unaware of exactly how long it takes and I needed my car by the end of the week, so about 30 mins before he closes I call him and ask him for an estimated time on when my car will be ready during the week. We literally go back and forth for 10 minutes because he wouldn't give me an answer and all he says is "I'll call you when it's ready how am I supposed to know when it's ready" Like???? YOU ARE THE MECHANIC, you should have some idea on how long it'll take to complete the service. I just wanted to know how many days it'll be at the shop or if it'll be ready same day. How hard is that to comprehend? He finally gives an answer and says 2pm the next day. The next day he calls at 10:15 and says my car is ready. Great! We go to pick up my car and the payment is made with a credit card (he always requests cash apparently to avoid the fees--understandable but weird right?) I thank him afterwards, then he aggressively tells me I don't have a right to talk to him the way I did on the phone. I looked him dead in the eye and almost laughed. I told him I simply wanted to know how long it would take for my car to be ready, and he continues to go on and on (in front of waiting customers) about how it's between me and my dad how long it would take, and that he was going to call when it's ready. Huh???? How does that make any sense? I told him that's not good customer service because a time frame is always expected during a service which isn't hard to grasp, I don't want my car just sitting here for days. He was so rude and it was only AFTER paying that he started all of this when he could have just accepted payment and moved on, but he didn't have the balls to do it before the payment Bitter old man, take your car somewhere else! read more

Worst smog place ever!! Toxic and belligerent are too nice to explain our experience. Should never have any contact with the public because he is so belligerent and toxic. Failed out smog because he said it was "tampered" with. He didn't put in the correct criteria regarding the diesel truck. He yelled at us for making it fail!! He was yelling and yelling at me for bringing in a truck that had been tampered with. I'm over 60 years old! How could I even know how to tamper with a 1 ton diesel truck?? Called and quoted to do front and rear brakes. People here are very nice. But when I received my car back, it didn't feel as if I had brand new brakes. They told me that due to new pads and rotors, I needed to break it in for a few days and further than 60miles total. Well, a few days later, still feels the same. I believe they put in new brake pads and rotors but considering my rotors look rusted, I do believe they used old pads and rotors left on their shelf. But, the brakes work and I guess I get what I pay for. I do appreciate that they re-checked it for me because I came back twice on the same day regarding the rubbing noise it usually makes after it rains. read more

I do not recommend this business based on my personal experience. You be the judge. I am an African-American woman that needed a smog test, unfortunately I did not pass the initial test and I paid the gentleman $39.00 for the failed smog test. He told me exactly what needed to be done to fix the car and he charged me $384. He fix the car I paid for the services. He gave me instructions to drive the car 50 miles return to repeat the smog test. I followed his instructions I came back within 24 hours after driving the 50 miles and he retested and I passed the smog test. He then charged me $50 for the retest and this time asked me for a different form of payment so I paid the $50. in cash. I also asked why do I have to pay for the second smog test. His reply was he does not remember me paying for the first smog test. He claimed he had no record of me coming for the first smog test and that I should have kept the original receipt. The person said I don't know what you're talking about you don't have an appointment I said I absolutely made one. He said well if you did you should've been here at 8:30 look at the clock everyone else here was on time where were you. First of all it's a classic car it took like 10 attempts to start it up. Been taking my cars here to get smog checks for a few years now. LOVE this guy! One of my cars didn't pass, and I must have taken it back to retest 4-5 times before it passed. He didn't recharge me for the test, and he was always patient and explained what I needed to do each time. Love this place! My new go-to. I've been here twice and both times have been amazing experiences. Quick and fast. The first time I went I had to get some work done on my engine and for a very cheap price fixed my issue and was very honest with me too and showed me the problem! Most places have given me overpriced estimates and won't explain to me or show me the exact issue. Very bad communication. Told me I needed to drive 50 miles after repair to get smogged. Drove over 100, still stated not enough. Drove 217 and stated still not enough. Refused to state how many miles AFTER paying $50. My wife called and he tried to only talk in Spanish, she replied in kind. He refuse to tell her and stated he would not return the money. I am extremely disappointed in the service that I received at MJ automotive on multiple occasions. I took my mothers car in on 5/27/16 because the car was running badly, the check engine light was on and I could not pass smog test . After running a diagnostic test on my car The mechanic Bien told me that all I needed was an engine coil#5 and a new battery. A couple of days later he called me and told me that the repairs were made and I can come and pick the car up. We picked up the car on 6/1/16 and Paid him $316.66 total for the services. Before making it home the car started shaking badly, the check engine light came back on. So I went back to Bien and asked why I was having the same issues he told me to drive the car at least 50 to 75 miles and the check engine light should go off and start running better. I Was very upset because that made absolutely no sense to me. I still could not pass a smog or get my car registered with DMV . So I decided to get a second opinion and ended up taking my car to the Nissan dealership which conducted a second diagnostic that I had to pay for and they told me that MJ automotive had put an old battery in my car and also put in a cheap aftermarket enginition coil in my car instead of a proper Nissan enginition coil. To make a long story short I took my car back to MJ automotive for a fourth time on 8/5/26 to show Bien proof of a second diagnostic check which stated that he put the wrong engine coil in. He was extremely rude to my mother and I, refused to do another diagnostic and claimed that there must be some other problem. The worst part of our conversation is that as we were speaking to him he turned on a very loud drill and continued to work on another vehicle during our conversation so that the drill would drown out our voices. And then he had the audacity to say "If you want your car fixed take it to Nissan." We were blown away by that statement and we Explained to him that we paid him a large amount of money to replace an engine coil which was clearly faulty based on the diagnostic report and we were extremely disappointed in his attitude and faulty service. Now we're out of $400 and stuck with a vehicle that will not pass smog and can barely make it a few miles down the road without shaking badly. I'm at a loss for words I can't believe this happened to me and my mother and I can't believe that he refused to offer a solution or correct the problem or even put in a cheap aftermarket part without even consulting me. Think twice before taking your car to MJ automotive especially if your woman. I have also filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and taking him to court for these faulty services. read more

I just wanted to give a big shout out (yelp) to the guys at M J Automotive. My wife and I have been dealing with them for over 15 years since living in East Contra Costa County. They have serviced my Jeep, GMC, VW, Subaru, and our Audi. He is honest, fair and will always give you the cheaper option if there is one to get your car up and running. An example is we replaced all the betls on my wive's Outback at 120k miles and a new water pump for under a grand. As we came into winter my wife noticed a squeak/moan as she turned her steering wheel. I thought for sure it was the power steering pump, we took the car back to MJ Automotive and he diagnosed the problem as the belts being to tight and proceeded to adjust it, I offered to pay him for his time but he refused, that is the type of person he is and the business he runs. I've been using MJ Auto for more than 10 years, always great service. The owner, Bien, has always been upfront and honest with us. He's very busy and hard working and he cares about building long term relationships with his customers. I used to have my oil changed at Walmart until they told me I had a major oil leak, take it to the dealer right away, etc. MJ said they didn't tighten the filter correctly, he changed the oil and of course the filter. Then he said he wants to do the oil changes and he would match Walmart prices for us. The difference in price was about $5 but this demonstrates his work ethic and concern for his customers. read more

My '05 Lexus RX330 rear brakes were squealing, which meant it's time for replacement. They replaced brake pads and rotors for $240 total and finished in less than one hour. Took the car to two other people and they said it was the correct CAD and even looked it up. Went back to MJ Auto and he charged me AGAIN to pass it.
