I had MJM Engines remanufacture my 96 4Runner engine and have nothing but positive things to say. They got this done FAST, were very communicative and sent us pics and updates from the shop. Typical pricing that was expected for a job like this. What made me really happy - they asked if I wanted it painted and I (sort of) jokingly said purple. They said they don't carry purple and that was that. Well, turns out they ordered purple paint and even gave me the rest. That kind of service is rare these days and made me smile! Great service and it's running well so far.

    The fans stopped working....again!

Great News! The ghost of Fred Astaire has been successfully exorcised from the engine compartment of the Up In Smoke Truck by the wise and powerful gurus at MJM Engines. Engine swap done in four days. Very professional and friendly. Clean job.

    Small block Chevy

Dropped off a small block Chevy short block to get new crank and cam bearings and re hone the cylinders. I spoke with mike originally and was quoted 7 to 10 days for completion. It sat there for 7 days and they didn't even look at it. Was talking with Drew most of the time and he kept saying we will tear it down tonight. On my third call on Day 7 spoke with Mike and he was kinda rude and said, without even tearing it down it's gonna need to bored out and pistons replaced as the cylinder walls were "ovaled" and had a deep ridge on it. I went by there on Day 9 and it still hasn't been touched so I took it back and dropped it off to Paradise Motorsports. It was done in a week. The place was a mess and when I picked it up Drew assisted me and didn't even ask why or anything. Not good customer service at all.

I purchased a 2008 Jeep JKU Wrangler Rubicon with a bad engine and needed a rebuild by a shop I could trust. After calling around and comparing pricing/warranties and ultimately visiting the shop and speaking with Drew I decided this was the shop to perform the work. It was estimated that the work would take 12-15 business days. I dropped off my Jeep a day or so prior to New Years. I had an ongoing dialog with Drew about how the rebuild would take place and I visited the shop to inspect progress once the engine was pulled. Drew and I had discussed aftermarket oil pump options and Drew took the time to call a particular vendor and discuss options. With his recommendation I approved the oil pump. Because of the added cost, Drew shared that he would allow me to purchase some of the other needed parts directly and avoid his mark-up. This went a long way toward insuring my satisfaction with the process. During one visit to the shop I found a component not cleaned to my satisfaction and brought this up with Drew. Later that day he had his technician tear down and redo the component to make certain that I was fully satisfied. The rebuild process took longer than anticipated but the delay was explained in regular updates. After taking delivery I had an oil pressure "blip" and quickly shut off the Jeep and called Drew. He immediately had a tow truck sent to pick up the Jeep. After testing and test-driving it was concluded that nothing was wrong and I again took delivery. I am now driving within the 500-mile break-in period. I would highly recommend MJM Engines. I found them to be honest and forthcoming about the process and quick to make certain that their customers are fully satisfied. Their 3-year 100K warranty is added assurance.

They also have strong industry relationships that help them source quality parts at fair prices, which can save customers money compared to going directly to a dealership. What stood out most to me was their transparency. They took the time to explain what actually needed to be fixed versus what could wait. The work was done professionally, communication was great throughout the process, and I never felt pressured into unnecessary repairs. If you're looking for a trustworthy mechanic in Escondido that does quality work at fair prices, I'd absolutely recommend Fair Auto Repair. 2011 Honda Accord 2 Door EX-L V6

On a positive note, the shop is very clean and gated, so it is a safe place to leave your car overnight Nevertheless, I will not return to the shop. My experience found them to be dishonest. I brought my 2022 Volkswagen Taos (approximately 35,000 miles) in for a routine oil change and was told that my rear brake rotors needed to be replaced immediately because "new brake pads would not apply to the rotors." At the time this did not make sense because I did not hear any screeching on my brakes and had no issues with my brakes prior to this appointment. However, I was in a time crunch and did not have time to visit an auto shop anytime soon for a second recommendation. I was about to start a full-time commute driving 60 miles each way five days a week. Because of this, I went ahead with the repairs. The way the need for replacement was presented made me feel like my vehicle was unsafe to drive if I didn't authorize the repair. Every time I mentioned driving to Orange County, Fred's response only furthered my fear. Once the repairs were underway, I began to question the pricing and necessity for replacement. It was at that point that I asked for pictures of the rotors, and then I asked the shop to give me my rotors and brake pads when the repairs were completed. Before I left the shop, I took a closer look at the rotors myself. While the shop owners did an excellent job of trying to convince me at the time that these rotors needed to be replaced, my first instinct was that they looked fine and did not need to be replaced. They had normal wear, and as I ran my fingers over them they had no deep grooves, no significant scoring, and no obvious damage. I took my rotors with me and had them reviewed by a friend who owns a repair shop in Orange County. There was nothing indicating the rotors were at the end of their useful life. It was at that point I knew I needed to write a review. To be clear, the shop failed to provide any measurements showing the rotors were below the manufacturer's minimum thickness or warped, replacing them did not appear to be an obvious necessity. The long-term effects of this experience will be felt every time I drive my car. When business owners look out for their bottom line over the needs of their customers, they often overlook the long-term consequences. Lost business, bad reputation, long-term loss. Being a woman, I assume they did not think I would do my research and dive this deep on the situation. But I do not like to call dishonesty out without having all the facts first. It was a poor miscalculation on their part. What disappointed me most was not that the shop recommended additional work, there are certainly situations where rotor replacement is appropriate. It was the fear-based approach used to sell the repair. As a customer, I rely on professionals to provide objective information, explain why a repair is needed, and present the evidence so I can make an informed decision. Instead, I left feeling pressured into believing my brakes were unsafe. It is experiences like this that have taught me to always double check what mechanics tell me. I value honest recommendations and transparent communication. If the rotors had been measured and shown to be below specification, or if there had been another objective reason they required replacement, I would have appreciated that explanation. Unfortunately, that wasn't my experience. I encourage others to seek a second opinion before authorizing expensive repairs based solely on verbal recommendations.

After a lot of Yelp research, I found Escondido Auto Tech. I brought my vehicles for a smog and got great service each time. Found them easy to work with too.
