Hello, I am Ruthie. I have a 2005 Ford Focus with (at the time) 245,000 miles. She blew the head gasket in November and everyone kept telling me to sell her and get something new since I drive roughly 125 miles a day. Well, I refused because I love my car too much. So I needed to find a shop that was not going to take advantage of me and not rip me off either. When I first came across MJM I was hesitant because there seemed to be a lot of bad reviews. I read through all the bad reviews and determined in my own opinion that they were not legitimate enough to keep me from going to MJM. When I called the first time they were very helpful in answering my questions and leaving me with the feeling that I was not going to be looked at differently because of being a woman. I took my car to them at Christmas time to do the repair on the head gasket. They showed me around the shop and all of the different work they perform. I was scared because of the age and milage on my engine I wasn't sure what they were going to find. I luckily have a great car because all she needed was a valve job with the new head gasket. I had her back within less than 3 weeks over the holidays. Drew was great about calling me or emailing me with updates and pictures of the process. I am a special case because my car is my child and I do most of the work on her so I don't trust a lot of people with her. They always left me feeling as though my car was in good hands. We are now months down the road and a few several thousand miles as well and I am still happy with the customer service I still receive from MJM. There have been a few small leaks that have popped up and they have been great about getting my car in and back to me the same day. They have even gone beyond what they need to do and have done some precautionary things for me and my car that they did not need to do or even have to do. They refused any responsibility and wanted to charge another $800 to repair what should have been replaced the first time. Website was misleading. I too paid for an engine rebuild for my '89 Toyota p/up because of the well-known blown head gasket of the v6 3vze model. It took 2+ weeks and multiple broken promises to get finished. Problems continued soon after and after taking it back, they used the excuse, word for word, that "foreign objects got into the engine." I ended up selling the truck after 2 more years of turmoil. Imagine getting into your car each day worrying about smelling the smallest hint of smog, or slightest unordinary sound because of a shotty job. I was lucky to sell the truck to someone who cared more about the truck's body which was in excellent condition as it was a daily road-only driver to work and back. read more

Took in a 2004 Acura TSX on 10/27/2017 for an engine rebuild-- the appeal was that they had a 100k mile warranty and every one else's review. However, the issues we've had since then is the check engine light has continuously come on at least 15 times. Today (9/25/2018) would be the 5th time the car has been dropped off here and dropped of due to timing chain being rusted (which they indicated was changed on the contract)! This shouldn't be rusted as the chain is soaked in oil. The 4th time car was dropped off, Drew agreed to get us a rental to ensure when car is dropped off for a week we wouldn't be out of a car again like we did the last 3x's. Car has been sitting in his shop for 1-2.5 weeks at a time.. not considering that people need their car for their daily duties. Drew is the main POC throughout entire process. But on the day of rental pick up, he suggested we get the car and will reimburse and then offered his wife's Prius (hello? Liability?) I refuse to drive anyone's personal car and be reliable for any risk on the road, especially in California. He's a nice man, don't get me wrong and very patient! But this is ridiculous to have to bring in the car this many times throughout the year and check engine light on, that many times. I've also indicated that I don't expect the car to run perfect or brand new, as it is truly a 14 year old car. but at least 85-90% better than when we took it in. It's run way worse before the initial drop off. I would just take the money and down on a new car or buy a used car from an old couple whom takes care of their car. Yes, you can actually find those things if you're patient and shop around. My mom bought a 2002 TL for 2600 with 176k miles. Something I've should've done.. it was Well taken care of! Your money is better elsewhere! I thought I was saving money, but it's been a waste of time and I should've taken the $4k to buy an old Honda from that older couple. I had this car for so long and was trying to save it! Sometimes you just got to cut your losses! I would say that I'm usually a fair person and can be nice as well, it takes alot for me to write a review. Either the firm did something really amazing or not so amazing and the rest of you should know. After this many times, you must consider some of the bad reviews. I've given them enough opportunities to get things done right and not a nitpicker, we shall see what happens with today's drop off! NOTE: Shop around and get multiple quotes..the mistake is being appealed by a 100kwarranty and it becomes a complicated process even with a warranty! read more

these guys are hacks!!!! they rebuilt a forklift engine for me but they forget a bunch of gaskets when they put the engine back together -- so i called mike the owner and he just laughed at me and asked me what i wanted him to do -- i asked to fix what they missed and make it right -- he refused to do anything -- so i had to pay my guys to take this engine back apart to put the parts in that mjm didn't do the first time. while we had the engine apart we found used pistons in this engine that they had just supposedly rebuilt -- they didn't rebuild anything!!! they just took my money and spray painted the engine to look like new again. I called MJM Engines after my BMW engine bled and died. Lol My regular mechanic who I trust beyond measure diagnosed my engine as needing to be replaced or a complete overhaul to the tune of $10K. I love my car but for that money I could buy a younger vehicle. I looked around for used engines and engine rebuilders to compare pricing and ran across MJM I called drew who quoted me less than half the price of what my guy quoted. MJM would remove and install a used engine and make sure all was running well and get me on my way. After sending my car over drew emailed me and said it would be a few days to get the engine to the shop and I'd be out shortly after that. He then emailed after the engine arrived and said it was damaged and they'd have to find me another one and a week later he emailed and said it's ready but the alternator was very noisy. It took it home and dealt with the noise for a couple of weeks when I noticed a coolant leak I returned it to the shop and it was an unrelated engine problem but there was an oil leak that they discovered. The fixed both issues in a timely fashion and my car is running like the ultimate driving machine it is. Drew is great at his job. He explains everything and has a great sense of humor and the crew at the shop does excellent work. If you need an engine, you should call Drew and the team at MJM Engines. My only complaint is I didn't get one of their black MJM Engines t-shirts. Lol thank you guys for taking care of my whip!!! read more

Mike and his crew did a full rebuild on me 6.1 liter engine in my 2008 Superbee. These guys killed it. My car runs perfect and it came with a 3 year 100000 mile warranty. The only reason its not a 5 star is the rebuild was very expensive. 6,000.00. read more

Had my 2000 Jeep Wrangler 4.0 rebuilt with the help of Drew last Feb. Last month the engine started to have a knock. Called Drew and had the Jeep dropped off. These guys did a good job rebuilding the engine but after we took the engine home we had several different problems . First the oil pan was without a gasket so it leaked oil all over and caused issues with my sons landlord who charged my son 250 $ to cleanup . Then after mjm fixed the oil pan some of the belt parts were bent ( looked lcausing the belts to get shred and leaving my son stranded in Tucson . I wrestled with the decision about having an engine rebuild for my dodge caravan, i decided to move forward with MJM. They are good people, i was surprised by the results, i asked for three references and they gave them to me. They were quite good reviews, i moved forward and the work was ok, i had an oil change by a local provider that did something wrong apparently and the engine died. Drew and Mike are my heroes. I had a week of hell after the underside of my car hit a swale which damaged the oil pan and an engine bracket. I drove my damaged car from Van Nuys to San Diego--and had a couple mechanics in Convoy take a look. They didn't notice anything wrong other than how I was low on oil--because it leaked out! I was given an oil change--they forgot the cap--and another day went by with more engine deterioration. Finally my engine seized up on the highway. I decided to take it to MJM. They not only took care of me, they finished two days early and tweaked a couple others things in my car so that it runs smoothly. I am so thankful people like these folks went above and beyond. I recently had some work done on my 96' F150. These guys were great. They completed a whole engine rebuild in under 4 days! Most shops I called around said it would take up to 2 weeks cost a couple hundred more then what I was charged at mjm. I couldn't wait that long since my truck is my livelihood. They kept me posted on all the repairs and actually were a couple bucks under their original estimate. They even had a warranty on their work. My only complaint was that they closed at 6pm. By the time I get out of work, deal with traffic, and make my way down to the shop it's closed. Other then that I had a great experience. read more

Needed my Toyota RV Sunrader's V6 engine rebuilt. Almost didn't use MJM because of bad yelp reviews, but after visiting their shop and getting the best price quote of 3 shops, decide to give them a try. They pulled the engine, rebuilt it and re-installed it all in the time they promised. Just got back from a 2200 mile road trip to Oregon and my Toyota ran great! Brought in a head that needed two spark plug wells to be repaired (inserts to replace stripped threads). Had it done the next day. The manager and one of the machinists I interacted with were nice and attentive. Had the job done the next day. They seem to be a lot more capable of the job I gave them. From what I can tell, this is a "full service" machine shop. Been in Escondido for about 15 years. Would definitely try them again if I have more engine work to do. Shoddy workmanship. The thing that should make anyone suspicious is they expect you to use a higher weight oil after the rebuild. Perhaps that's so you don't see the oil leaks as quick. Better off buying an engine from the junkyard. read more

They have precision Rottler machinery and the skills to turn out nice work in a brief period of time. Mike and Drew are outstanding, honest, knowledgeable people to work with. Great job on the rebuild of my Tacoma engine. Now 1000 miles later the engine runs excellent. Only 99,000 miles left before the warranty expires, and I hope never to have to use it. I had nothing but good experience with MJM engines. I called several times and someone answered phone each time. When I got there, Mike gave me tour of machine shop and discussed my options with me on a small block mopar v8 rebuild (for a 71' Plymouth Duster). Everything was done in about a week and there were no "hidden" fees. Engine core cleaned up nicely and it runs better than expected. This shop did such a bad job rebuilding my engine that I eventually gave up and sold the vehicle because I couldn't get it to run right, and neither could MJM after bringing the vehicle back to them six different times! And that's not the whole story... They did such a poor job of cleaning & honing the mating surfaces that nearly every gasket (intake and exhaust) starting leaking almost immediately! They rebuilt my heads and put them on a rebuilt block with no clue as to the original year and model. So some parts didn't align properly, like my starter. When it exploded due to poor alignment I couldn't find an exact fit no matter how many I tried. These are just the low-lights of a very long story, but as you might have guessed by now, the owner wouldn't stand behind his work. He just kept saying "bring it back and I'll work on it when I have time". He never did get it running right and had the nerve to blame the gasket failures on me! HUH?!? Do yourself a favor and avoid this place like the plague! read more

These guys are a rip off! I had my truck done 1 1/2 ago and forgot to do a write up. I had a rattling noise coming from the engine area once in while. I told the guy "Mike" at the shop about it and pulls my dip stick out and slides it between his fingers and says " oh you have metal shavings". I just changed my oil 3 days prior and was clear.He then says "you need an overhaul". really? So my idiot thinking ok. $3700 dollars later and comes to find out my fly wheel had cracks in it that holds on the gear. You guys are amazing. Our Lexus rx300 engine blew last summer and needed to find a place to rebuild our engine. My husband called around and found MJM engines sounded like our best option but I wasn't too happy when I looked up their reviews. One thing I found on some customer reviews was they tended to have hidden charges. My husband brought this to their attention but they assured us that there wouldn't be. Out of the few places we called for estimates, MJM was slightly higher but had the best warranty. We felt having a good warranty was important when you consider how much money goes into rebuilding an engine. We decided to go ahead and have them rebuild our car's engine. Everything went smooth. We got our car within a week. A few month later my husband discovered a retaining clip had popped off so we called MJM. They not only took responsibility but fixed it for free. I'm very happy with this place and the poor reviews from Yelp do not reflect the type of service we got. I would definitely recommend them. read more

I read some good (very good) reviews on MJM and a couple of really bad reviews - but after talking with the owner I used them and they did a great job. I fried my 4.7L Chrysler engine (2001 Grand Cherokee). I needed a complete, full Monty, engine rebuild - in a week. They had to bore 0.30 over (piston gouged cylinder) - and also deal with the valve issues these engines have. Job was done on time, and the price very reasonable for work done. Entire engine compartment cleaned up very nice too. Engine runs pretty cool - which is saying something for August in Reno with this engine. Runs REALLY smooth. Nice job guys! read more

Not a bad job if I say so my self. Had not changed the oil in my car for a while and started to hear some noise from the motor. Did some calling around found prices really high and some to good to be true I then got a price from MJM engines was in the middle. The problem was with some of the reviews I found on line I called them again they told me to come down and check out the shop. So I did I got to see the work they do the equipment that they have. So I told them of my concern of some of the reviews on line they didn't hide anything they showed me the bad ones I seen and the good ones I seen they also showed me there was 15 or so on kudzu that were great I missed these they also showed me a bunch on yelp that are filtered and you can not see unless you go to the bottom of the page and find the filtered tab witch is in light gray .Any way there good verses there bad is more so I made the decision to have them fix my car they took it in said 3-5 working days it took 7 but they did call to let me know it was getting the parts around the holidays was taking longer but the end result is my car is back to running good. They even called me about a week after I got my car back to see how it was running. If you need some work on your car I would give them a call they did right by me. read more

I have nothing but really good things to say about this company. I come from a long line of family that built engines for a living, unfortunately, I learned guitar, thus making my obsession with hot rods quite expensive at times. I had a major issue with an engine that was professionally built by a different company. I flew my father in who used to build engines with his eyes closed, and he couldn't figure out the problem. We took it to Mike and the boys and they figured it out, talked to the engine builder multiple times, and did me right. It is rare to have great customer service in that industry, and they were great. They will be doing all of my engines from here out! read more

I contacted MJM last summer to rebuild an engine. It was sent out and when it returned, it was installed. Within 15 minutes of the rebuilt engine running, there was loud clunking noises and immediately shut off. Before the thermostat opened the engine stopped working. The head was taken off and immediately saw the cylinder bores were cut with big scratches in it. The valve also fell off as seen in the photos. MJM was contacted and took the engine back a second time. It was explained to them that the engine was not working properly and proceeded to show them the problems. The engine was received back a second time and installed. The engine was driven for around 500 miles and was taken in for the first oil change. The oil change was completed and the engine ran for around 15 minutes after the oil change before the clunking noise came back. The engine was shut off and the head was taken off to inspect what exactly happened. The same valve had fallen a second time. To save from more of a headache and the poor quality of work of MJM, a new engine had to be ordered. MJM showed poor integrity in their work, poor customer service, and poor work ethic. I will not return as they did not make any effort to make this problem right. read more
