Really disappointed in the evening here tonight.we had a great server for happy hour and preconcert. However post concert refused to serve us per his opinion we were stumbling walking in. Awkward and honestly somewhat rasiscist being he never saw us walking in and only spoke to us when we sat at the table and requested our original waitress. I enjoy the food, and ambience of this restaurant/bar. I had the pulled pork sandwich, and the cheeseburger each time I was here. Both were well-made, and delicious. They both were served with potato fries which were moist, and delicious. No ketchup was needed. Each dish was very enjoyable, and the servers were very friendly. I just wish there was no D.J. playing loud music. I was also disappointed that they 'just ran out' of the braised lamb tacos. Restaurants should not be running out of stuff. read more

Couldn't understand their lyrics and the sound was poor. Tried the Austin Burger. Good presentation but the cook must have dropped the salt shaker on the patty. This place is awesome! Came for my birthday party on Saturday night, they have $5 drink specials and a super fun DJ, DJ Tempty, who spins vinyl 60s and 70s funk....love DJ Tempty!!! Called ahead and they reserved us the 3 big long tables closest to the DJ. We didn't have to pay to reserve them and were on separate checks, which made it super easy for me!! I had a great night and my guests seemed to really enjoy it too. Several commented that I picked a great place and it was classy and nice. Also - they have a parking garage behind the building, so even though it's downtown nobody has to hunt for parking!! The waitress was also really nice and did a great job! We arrived on a Saturday night at a bit past 7 pm. We had been last year and had enjoyed a evening of drinking some beer and wine, snacks and a fun DJ. Since we only live around 2 miles away we thought lets pop in again. Well. Last night was a kiddie nightmare. We sat down at the bar and there were screaming, running unattended toddlers right behind our bar chairs. There were also numerous crying babies scattered in the table area. Service was prompt and we ordered our drinks. We ordered the queso which arrived prompt and cold. We sent it back and it arrived quickly and was tepid. We then amid the crying and shrieking (by now past 8 decided it was a unpleasant experience and to move on. I dont think we will be back for a evening as it was unpleasant place and seems to be a children's playground not a bar as the name implies. read more

When I come to MKT I dream of city living and visiting on a daily basis...unfortunately for me I'm stuck in suburbia hell. MKT offers a lot of bang for your buck, and a trendy yet cozy atmosphere to sit back, relax and sample a few beers or cocktails. I love that they offer a varied menu and also have espresso and gelato available as well. They have plenty of specials on different week nights, including 2 steak nights and 1/2 priced wine bottles on Wednesdays. The prices are vary reasonable by downtown standards and the service is always great. I recently visited for happy hour with a friend and some family and we sampled one of the cheese plates (so much more than just cheese!), a pizza, and two flavors of gelato. Everything was tasty and the gelato left me wanting more (try the pistachio orange blossom...the bomb.com!). MKT has easily made it's way onto my HH rotation schedule, so I will be back...and you should be scared. read more

On Mondays it is game night where you can find 20 or so board games to play or hula hoop on the stage. We stopped in for a round during happy hour on Memorial Day. I ordered a happy hour priced wine and Jesse a beer and grabbed a game. My last sip of wine left me with a mouth full of grit, ugh. I can see why this bottle was on happy hour. Happy hour is Monday-Friday 2pm-7pm and reverse happy hour is 9pm-midnight Saturdays. They also have live music certain nights. read more

This is a tale of a butter knife and disco lights. A butter knife is meant to cut butter. Butter is soft and creamy. When a steak is served with a butter knife an expectation of what the steak will be like is presented by the person/place serving it to you. I was given a butter knife for my ordered medium rare steak. I then had a butter knife to saw through my medium well done steak. I will admit that the seasoning on the steak was good but that is where the positive qualities ended. You may ask why didn't I ask for another knife? Or send my steak back? Well, reason #1 is due to the fact that the wait service was exceptionally slow almost purposefully slow for the number of patrons that were in MKT bar. The second reason was the disco lights making me feel very rushed. Due to someone doing some kind of crazy lighting check in the restaurant that was obviously so pressing that it could not wait until the restaurant closed in 30 minutes. The lights flashing on and off on and off, dimmer brighter, dimmer brighter. I am not sure what was going on and we did ask someone about this and we were told that there was no sense in asking him about it because he would do whatever he wants. If they want to have disco lights flashing the least they could do is provide some dancers in great 70s clothes. So for this tale of butter knives and disco lights the ending was as disappointing as the beginning. read more

Best Beer, Wine & Gelato Bar in a Grocery Store! That's a bit of an oversimplification of this attractive, trendy bar that's part of Phoenicia's Downtown Market. Like the Market, MKT Bar (abbreviation-get it?) is an easy to get to nightspot just off of Discovery Green. You can park conveniently and for free in the garage of One Park Place. In the early evenings, the Market is still open, so I usually grab a couple of grocery items before I sit down to a nice local Texas draft beer. There are usually three or more local options on tap (and five other beers). And with the Mediterranean and International influence of the parent store, there are a number of bottled selections ranging from South American to Russian. During Happy Hour, you'll save a buck on drafts/bottles and glasses of wine. Seven days a week, there's some kind of music: acoustic, jazz and DJ. Check the website for details on daily happenings. I recently enjoyed hearing Hank Schyma and Craig Kinsey on guitars and harmonica. Every six weeks or so, new art goes on the wall with a pleasant artist's reception that's open to the public. It's a great opportunity to check out some interesting art and sample some the Market's tasty treats. Food wise, I usually just do the light munchies including the fries, but what really stands out is the Steak Night on Tuesdays and Thursdays: a small, but tasty steak with vegetables and fries. Tuesdays are also Tango Nights with a chance to do a little dancing (too bad it's my run night). Gelato is freshly made with a couple of really exotic flavors like cardamon thrown in MKT Bar has slowly, but surely grown into the place to stop in after work. Many organizations host socials. And there is always a nice little crowd here of Houston's professionals. Checkout this nice, chill place. My Tip for you: Get on the mailing list for specials and events at MKT Bar. read more

$12 steak nights from 2-10pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays! I cannot comment on anything alcohol related in this bar, other than to say it seems VERY well stocked and I really need to find a way to work my way through that wine list :) So, $12 gets you a seat at a table or the bar (recommended) a steak (about 5-6 ounces I guess) baked potato half with cheese, or sweet potato fries (not tried) and a house salad. The steak comes how you want it cooked-- its really delicious. They put the chimichuri sauce on the steak -- if you want it on the side, make sure you ask for it that way. The chimichuri sauce really makes the steak "pop" and brings out a nice flavour to it. Be warned, it is a bit spicy, so make sure you're prepared for that. They do serve it with real utensils and a really sharp steak knife. The food is delicious, hot and very tasty! And yes, all for $12!! My seemingly only small critique of this place is the drinks: I asked for an ice tea and she completely filled the glass with ice and about 1.34234 ounces of tea. yeah, it was REALLY cold tea with all that ice, but hardly any liquid. I think next time, I'll be sure to make sure the ice is only half way done and I get some real tea. They even offer you a take out cup for the iced tea when you're ready to leave -- that is quite nice on the way back to the office sipping cold tea :) Solid 4 stars, for the music, the tv's, the food and the bar itself: very nice, MKT bar, very nice! They even have live music after 7pm or so, so that's a bonus! read more

Sometimes I like to take things nice and slow. I feel like I had that in common with the servers at MKT Bar. Service was painfully slow. I do not believe it was all their fault. Every time I asked for something they went trekking off somewhere. When I asked for a beer I think they were like the guy from the Coors Light commercials who has to go climb a glacier to get another beer. It took that long. We went there for a Thursday night steak night. The highlight of the meal was the salad. There was plenty of it and the dressing was very tasty. The steak, on the other hand, was tiny and tough. The fact that we were given butter knives to cut it did not help either. The side of fries consisted of seven fries. They were little and sad and I almost felt bad for those poor little fries. Somewhat cold, alone, and they would never get to go back home. There was not even a blanket of ketchup to keep them warm. They never had a chance. So at about 9:45, which was 30 minutes after we got there and 15 minutes before they closed, the manager started flashing the lights. On and off, on and off, over and over. It made me rush my dinner, like he was trying to get us out of there. I asked out waiter to ask the manager to stop flashing the lights and his response was, "that manager is just kind of a dick." I appreciate the honesty, but how likable the guy is does not change the flashing of the lights that continued. On and off, on and off, over and over. I've been to a lot of the local steak nights and judging strictly by food this was the worst. If you couple this with the poor service and flashing lights, one star is as high as I can go. This is a great option in the downtown area for dinner (or lunch - liquid or solid - after 2 PM). I say that, but dependent on what you order, and your sensibilities, it could be hit or miss. They excel in their pizzas and a few of their appetizers. Oh, and the cheese platter. Stick with these. Or beer. Or wine (don't mix!!). I haven't tried the desserts, but they look pretty solid, including the counter o' gelato. If you buy your vegetables at the farmer's market, or are in any way particular about your vegetables, don't get the salad. It was a chopped up romaine number with red grapes, pistachios, tiny cheese cubes (microscopic), sliced isreali cucumber, and well, I got the chicken breast on top. Romaine to me is like Iceberg; I'm more of the dark greens with vitamins and flavor type. I don't have time for filler when I'm eating my veggies, I want every bite to be full of "good for me." I know, demanding snob. So, just stick to the pizzas. They may not use farmer's market fresh ingredients, but they do use slightly different ones, so it keeps everything a bit interesting. The prices are reasonably in the $10-$15 price level. If you apply that to the salads, strike and reverse that. $15 is not okay for a plate full of chopped romaine and chicken that tastes of non-fresh sodium cloaking procedures. If you want to stay healthy, wander through Phoenicia first and/or go to the salad bar, then bring your food here. If you want to stay good (not the healthy type of good), get one of the pizzas like the other tables around you. read more

I can't help but be impressed with this funny little bar. A couple of people I've brought have said it seems a little awkward having a bar connected to a supermarket, but that actually seems to appeal to me. I just love the idea of living in the building upstairs (it's in the same building as One Park Place and shares their parking garage) and having a supermarket (which happens to be one of Houston's best, in my opinion) and a really cool bar, all in one! To top it all off, Discovery Green is literally right across the street. Man, that's living.... They was a Rocket's game going on in the Toyota Center nearby when we came in for dinner, so they had game night specials like $3 Bayou Sliders, $3 beer, and $3 zaatar fries. We also ordered the Farmers MKT pizza to share. The sliders were delicious! The bread was crispy to the bite, yet chewy and slightly sweet, perfectly complimenting the pickles, caramelized onions, and bacon nestled on top of the beef patty. But the real hit were the zaatar fries. OM NOM NOM!!! They were really thin and kind of hard to grab (which might have been a good thing, because I was tempted to grab a handful and shove it in my face) but they were crisp and perfectly seasoned. They came with what was apparently a Moroccan ketchup (we had to ask the waiter what it was because IT WAS SO GOOD) and some garlic mayonnaise to dip in. The surprise of the night was the Farmer's Pizza. I'm not a fan of veggie pizza at all, and I've especially never had one with fruit in it. I'll admit that I only ordered it because I saw it had been nominated for an award and a I was curious why. But I have to say, it all works! The cheese and herbs, countered with the sweetness and crunch of apple and pear, actually makes a delicious pizza. Who knew? I really like the ambiance of this place (even though the DJ was a little too loud that night) so I'm glad I now have a reason to drag people to downtown more often. I think next time I wanna try the cheese plate, or come in for steak night! read more

I'll preface by saying that a few weeks ago, MKT Bar would not have earned a five-star review. As mentioned in other reviews and as I experienced on multiple visits, the waitstaff at MKT Bar was severely lacking, if not outright horrible. I'm glad to report that this has dramatically changed over the past few weeks. We were greeted at last night's Steak Night by a wonderful new waitstaff and an extremely kind manager (and a visit from the owner!) who went above and beyond to make our dining experience fantastic. This restaurant/wine bar has so much potential to be a shining star in our downtown scene, and I really believe that their new crew can make this happen. The food is always fantastic, whether you're dining from their regular menu or happen upon Thursday's Steak Night. The sliders are a personal fave, and I've yet to come across an appetizer that I didn't drool over on sight. The wine list isn't extensive but covers the important bases. Personally I hate being thrown a novel at wine bars to sift through versus being given a short but smart wine list, and MKT Bar accomplishes that perfectly. The beer list is a bit more adventurous and extensive. The place does get busy but never lacks for seating, and they handle large groups quite well. The portions at Steak Night are satisfying and the steaks are always good, and for $12 it's quite a steal. Great urban vibe with good food, good wine, and a new waitstaff that is aiming to please. Young professionals are going to make or break this place, so get to drinking! read more

I go to this place almost every Tuesday for tango ("Tasty Tango Tuesdays," they call them). They also happen to have a steak special on Tuesday nights which allows you to have a (4 oz?) steak with chimichurri, a side salad, and your choice of string fries or half a backed potato for $12. I've had the steak two or three times and it's almost always nice (for the price). My favorite item on their menu, though, is the lamb sliders. Their beer taps and wine selections aren't too shabby, and they usually have interesting choices for their happy hour menu. Another cool thing is that you can shop for food items in the market part of the building and have them at the bar. Just don't bring in alcohol- that's a no-no. Service can be slow a lot of the times, which is understandable as it can get pretty packed. Sometimes the runners are clueless as to what person (or table) gets what. The worst experience with the service staff I've had was once where the guy came after me as I was leaving. He said I hadn't signed my bill. "Wha... yes, I did. Ok, let's go check." So we go to the table and, sure enough, there was my signed bill. My friends didn't seem to mind waiting for me. Speaking of friends, one of them complained that a server made an inappropriate joke at her expense once, so there's that. As far as I'm concerned, I've never gotten rudeness from them... although the manager can be a bit dramatic about the music's volume. Last time I was there she even turned off the singer's microphone mid-song! And I thought the going and turning the volume down as people are dancing was bad enough... If you're going to host a night of dancing and advertise it as such (with free lessons and all), then you should respect a volume that's loud enough for the dancers to hear what to dance to. I both mingle and dance, and haven't felt the need to yell over music so I can't relate to other patrons' complaints. I haven't been to other music events there, but I've seen live music and DJs advertised. I hope they don't have to deal with people turning the volume up, down, or even off when they're performing. Maybe next time I'll complain that the art featured on the walls is too bright for my eyes and ask them to put some gray cellophane over it. Joking aside, one other cool thing about the place is the rotating local art they decorate the room with. That's my review and I'm sticking to it. 3.5 stars read more

Thursday is steak night at MKT Bar! Met up with 2 friends here for my first steak night experience ever. They validate parking in the garage; just take the elevator down to ground level. And don't be jerks like my friends who pretended not to know me as I waved at them to hold the elevator door. I don't know what I was expecting the place to look like, but I liked the vibe. It was dimly lit with candles, very trendy and simple. There was also a DJ spinning live music, although he looked bored to be playing top 40 hits (I'd be tired of playing Blurred Lines and Get Lucky, too). The $12 special includes a steak, baked potato or fries, and side salad. The salad was just some lettuce, cherry tomatoes, and a piece of onion. The baked potato was pretty large, and had melted cheese on top. I'd go with the fries next time, because I had to stop myself from stealing them off my friend's plate. The steak itself was cooked medium rare per request, served with pesto sauce and crispy onion strings. Overall, it's a great deal for a filling meal. The guys I was with can EAT too, and they were satisfied. For dessert, we shared a small pistachio and tiramisu gelato (a lot for a small!). I'm picky when it comes to gelato, but the pistachio was spectacular- strong flavor and could actually taste bits of nuts swirled in. Curiously, the place was packed but no one else ordered steak. Maybe we're not in on the secret that their regular menu is even better. Somebody please enlighten me? P.S. Weekend brunch anyone??? This is a casual yet fun place. Get a bite of yummy eggs, some music, watching cute couples dance and pack a squid salad along a side of hummus before you leave. I love come here on the weekend do just all that above. The food here is quite good. Not spectacular but down home cooking with good flavors. Drinks are always lovely and flowing. I love this place, the food and the deals; BUT.... the service is always super spotty. My friend and I often head here before or after Rockets' games. The first time we came, we got one of the pizzas (I don't remember which one now), the hummus and za'atar fries. All were super awesome! The portions are very very generous - especially the hummus. I would definitely recommend all items. The initial service on this day was horrible. You seat yourself here and the server comes to you. When we sat down, we were waiting for probably 15 minutes just waiting for our server to get at least a drink order. We were watching a game on TV so it wasn't like we were watching our watches. This place isn't that big - you can almost see the whole area from any one table. The guy went to two tables right next to ours and totally ignored us! We decided to just get up and move to another table with another server. This guy was awesome to us in comparison. On days that the Rockets play, MKT BAR has game day specials. $3 beers, bayou city sliders and za'atar fries. We got there and ordered a bottle of wine because the Wednesday special was half off wine bottles. Our server on this day was new but my friend and I gave it a shot because everyone has to start somewhere, right? Some people get really annoyed when their servers constantly come up to them to ask if they need anything. On the opposite end, it's horrible when they just ignore you! We had to ask for napkins, plates, forks, and refills. She's new but I had hoped for these basics to be cemented. We ordered the squashed pizza and an order of fries (at the special's price). My friend is a vegetarian so our pizza options were limited without making one of our own. It was a good pizza - I loved the crust and roasted garlic. When we got the bill, we were charged the normal price for the fries. Next time I'll know to make it specifically clear which order I want - my bad. I'll continue to come back but just keep my fingers crossed! read more

Yesterday, I went in for MKT Bar's steak night for the first time (takes place every Tuesday & Thursday from 2-10pm) and I was super happy with what I got: -a simple, yet very fresh salad composed of romaine, tomatoes, red onion, parmesan flakes & Italian dressing -a huge, juicy, tender, perfectly cooked and seasoned steak (it's a "chef's choice" steak, mine was a ribeye) -a large pile of shoestring potato fries -an equally big pile of crispy mini onion rings I can't recommend steak night enough! It is an incredible, tasty value! Just try it already. Although MKT Bar is on my regular rotation, yesterday was my first time in for steak night. Much has already been said about this cafe/restaurant/bar attached to Phoenicia. Well, it is about time I did a proper review as well. I love the brick exterior of the restaurant and grocery from the street. Walking in there is a L shaped marble bar, a small stage, some booths along the wall, and tables scattered. Relaxing and comfortable. They will have bands play, or vinyl night from the guys at Cactus. The Thomas Helton Trio plays here from time to time. They are amazing, so check it out when if you can. Service is spot on, knowledgeable and quick. Food comes out before you know it with a small menu of brunch and lunch/dinner items. The egg scramble with kielbasa sausage over roasted potatoes is great. As are the pizzas, and well anything else on the menu. A nice beer and wine list as well. Within walking distance of Minute Maid Park and Toyota Center, so a great spot to grab something to eat before heading to a game. read more

This may been a one off event, but he had some real bad service that ruined our taste buds. We came here Tuesday for steak night ($12 for a 7oz ribeye, potatoes and salad) Thats a very good deal and to say for the food it was good (not great). The steak was cooked more then we requested and I wasn't a fan of the double backed potato. The MKT dips and chips were real good. The concerning part here as mentioned is the service. It was that busy when we came and took us about 10 minutes for someone to bring us some menus and take our drink order, while we waited for our friends to get here (total party of 4). To put it in simple bullet points: 1) took too long to get our water. 2) took extremely long to come back and take our order. 3) Didn't get drinks till about 15 minutes from placing the order 4) Pizza order never made it to the kitchen and the waiter didn't tell us until we got our steaks. 5) Got steak with no steak knives. 6) had to ask for water refills. 7) Originally charged us for full price drinks when we ordered during happy hour. This is my local hangout spot. MKT Bar is relaxing without being pretentious. I love the atmosphere and wait staff are all very friendly. They currently have fairy lights up and light each table with a candle. Big fan of the ambiance. The wine and beer selection is fantastic and I'm sure the wait staff will be happy to give you a few samplers if you ask nicely. I regularly get the lamb wrap from Phoenicia and then order a Karbach lager at MKT.
