I heard they have a chain in Boston (where I live) but I never saw it, so I came to try the one in DC instead! Great for pick up, ambiance for sitting in isn't that pleasing. I love middle eastern food in general, so you already have me at kabob. It's pretty well seasoned. Might be slightly saltier for some people. I found the rice to be on the slightly drier side, but the meat is really what's important and I enjoyed my meal. A little bit pricey I suppose around $10+ BUT the portion IS pretty big. This is the worst Mediterranean/middle eastern food I've ever eaten. I'd rather go to Pita Pit than eat this garbage again. We got delivery. Everything was cold. Veggie platter, falafel platter, dolmeh, & shirazi salad. Everything was bad. Down to the side salad that comes with the falafel platter. Falafels- dry as a bone. Tasted like they've been sitting out since Biblical times. No flavor. No crunch from deep frying. The rice- had shredded cheese on top???!? Why??? That's so weird and unauthentic. (Someone states below that it's saffron not cheese, so if that's true, I'm wrong about the rice! It doesn't look like any saffron I've ever seen.) Tahini sauce- a tiny dribble at the bottom. Who knows if it was good? Yogurt sauce- I'm vegan, but they managed to get it all over everything. Unfortunate, since it tasted like yogurt mixed with mayo mixed with death. Veggie platter - absolutely zero flavor. A bunch of veggies sautéed to death thrown on top of basmati rice Dolmehs- somehow they screwed these up too. The flavor profile was way off. They were so sugary with almost zero zing from lemon. Maybe just get the kabobs. If you want great Mediterranean food, go to Fatoosh. read more

I made a large order over the phone on a Saturday around lunchtime, and the person helping me (a) got my whole order right the first time, (b) was very fast, and (c) offered me a pickup time that was WAY sooner than I thought would be possible. When I asked for a later pickup time (we couldn't have gotten there earlier), the employee accommodated that with no problem. When my brother-in-law brought the food to my place, it was hot, ample, and pretty delicious. Two words: Hot mess. I've ordered from here a few times before and it never goes smoothly. There always a wait that's longer than it should be. Today was horrible though. I'll come back to that in a sec. The Food: It's pretty good. I always get the kabob joojeh. You get lots of rice to go along with well seasoned chicken. I also like their hummus and bread. I still I prefer the kabob place on Wilson Blvd. because it tastes just as good and you get rice and salad. 4 stars. The Service: This is the where they lost all their stars. The cashiers are usually pretty friendly but never seem to have a grasp on taking orders and getting food out. It's like they can't do both. It took an hour to get food that I was told would take ten minutes. When I did finally get it, it was lukewarm and soggy. That tells me that it was ready much earlier but just sat. While the location is perfect, it's not worth the hassle to get food. 1 star. read more

I no longer eat here. The vegetarian melt platter is good. The chicken kabob is dry. The bread is that hard chewy tough kind (despite the atmospheric hanging on the nails area for the flatbread). The white sauce is watery (is supposed to be like Indian raita ? Cucumber and yogurt sauce meant to cool your system.) They have wireless. They have booths and plenty of tables. They are not a hole in the wall anymore. I should like them. The reason for the name is a romantic tale of literature and kabobs. I wish they played on that more. There's a lot of seating, and maybe a lot of people take their food to go. In crowded Clarendon, you can always find a place to sit at Moby Dick. So, get the WiFi password and enjoy a quiet lunch or dinner. There's no bouncer out in front, and I can actually take my kids here on a Saturday night -- a novelty in this neighborhood. If you're not familiar with the menu, it can take a while to figure out how to order just what you want. For example, you can get chicken and salad, or chicken and rice, or chicken + salad + rice if you're really hungry. And, most meals come with bread so you don't have to order it unless you really want a lot. The food is consistently good, it's reasonably priced, the cashiers are polite, and the place is clean and comfortable. If you're looking for a relatively quick, casual meal that's more nutritious than fast food, this is a great choice. read more

Atmosphere: very cute décor, friendly atmosphere, plentiful seating Food: I am very picky about my Middle Eastern food. Moby's falafel is the best in the area. The falafel sandwich is wrapped in yummy flatbread that is freshly baked and much better than the flatbread at Kabob Bazaar, which is so tough is spots that you can't even tear or chew it. The falafel patties are perfectly spiced; the cucumber yogurt sauce is delicately minted and very delicious. I always order extra. For those who don't know, I am also a hummus connoisseur and Moby's is very decent. The only thing that kinda ruins it for me is the olive they have on top for garnish. Don't get me wrong- I love olives, I am an olive fanatic, but that olive flavors the rest of the hummus and gives it an olive-y flavor which does not belong there. The baklava is excellent. Price: pretty decent. The falafel sandwich is big enough to share or have leftovers. Normally, leftover falafel is gross, but theirs is so freakin' good that it's even good cold and several hours old. Everything about Moby is better than Bazaar, but I cannot speak for the kabob and rice because I haven't tried it at either place. I love this place, and I don't really love any restaurants around here. I can only speak to the delivery service provided, as I haven't had the dine-in experience at any of the locations, but the food here is good and always arrives still-hot. The delivery time is fast, often much faster than predicted, and all the interactions I've had with delivery staff have been super pleasant. It is a bit pricey, but Mediterranean places usually are, and I think the prices here are reasonable enough. I generally get the the Kabob-E Joojeh (boneless chicken) with rice and salad, and the chicken is tasty, well-seasoned, and never dry. The hummus is fine - it's not my favorite I've ever had but it's not bad. Hummus is such a weirdly personal thing that it always feels like an insult when you don't love somebody's hummus, but it is not! The baklava is out of this world. The best I've ever had. I forgot to get it with my last order and spent a week disappointed at my foolishness. Bottom line: I'm a regular, and plan to stay that way. read more

I've had a craving for falafel every since I left Michigan and in my continued search for one, I came across Moby Dick House of Kabob. I found this place nearby after searching for falafel on my yelp app. The name of this restaurant is not the only confusing aspect of the place. When I walked into MDHoK, unusually, I was greeted by the sounds of Mexican singer crooning a song over the speakers...which was bit odd and more confusing... Of course, I ordered the falafel platter ($7.95) which included falafel, rice, a little salad, and flat bread. After a long wait, my food came out. It was a little disappointing. The 4 falafel patties were tiny! But they were decent. The bread was dry and bland. The rice and salad were ok. Although I was expecting more of a tabbouleh-style salad instead of a greek salad. The saving grace of Moby Dick is that it has cheaper prices in an overpriced neighborhood. I can see why they do so much business. I may return to try a meat entree. Note: It seems like most of the Middle Eastern restaurants in Metro DC feature food from Eastern Middle Eastern countries like Afghanistan, vs. Western countries like Egypt and Lebanon where Falafel is more widespread, so I guess it makes sense that a good falafel is hard to find. I have to reupdate my review, based on the food we recently ordered in from Moby Dick. I've been to several other Moby Dick locations before and have even ordered delivery from the other locations, but the food from the Moby Dick at the Clarendon location is not as great when delivered. A few weeks ago, my bf and I wanted to eat some Persian food in honor of the Persian New Year and decided to order in from Moby Dick. The food took a long time to be delivered (over an hour), and in the end, it was really, really dry. While the portions were generous, as always, the bread was sadly DRY. So dry that it tasted like rubber and I could barely chew or gulp it down. The kabob was a little bit better, but still not as fresh as I would have liked it. Last year, we both visited the restaurant in Clarendon and I enjoyed it, but the delivery was just an entirely different experience. I wouldn't write this location off entirely based on this experience, but I think I would rather eat at the restaurant and not do delivery in the future. read more

I just don't see why everybody raves about this place. It's decent, but it's nothing special. I usually get the chicken kabob, and the chicken is usually pretty dry. The tzatziki (yogurt and cucumber) sauce is almost tasteless. I've made tzatziki sauce before myself, and it's almost impossible to mess up, but somehow they manage to strip all the flavor out of it. This place is cheap and convenient, but it's nothing special.
