However, we were told the manager was unavailable because he was busy speaking with regulars at a table. I asked if we could simply be placed on hold until he was available so we could find a solution. We were told no. Instead, the employee said they would "leave a note" and that someone would call us back if they were able to help. Meanwhile, we were told that if the reservation was canceled, we would be charged a $135 cancellation fee -- despite the fact that we were actively trying to work with the restaurant to either reschedule or resolve the situation. The experience became even more unacceptable when the employee eventually hung up on us and then stopped answering our calls. The restaurant only answered after American Express contacted them on our behalf. To be clear, I have no issue with a restaurant having a cancellation policy. What I have an issue with is the way this situation was handled: being told the manager was "too busy" to speak with us, being refused the simple courtesy of being placed on hold, having our calls screened, and ultimately being hung up on. That is an embarrassing level of customer service for an establishment of this caliber. I genuinely hope someone in management -- above the person working the restaurant that evening -- takes this seriously and addresses this behavior. A cancellation policy is one thing; treating a customer with this level of disrespect is another.
