Master Auto Tech is true to its name! I had issues with an oil leak and more with my wife's 2015 Audi A3 convertible. I brought it into the Audi dealership and they gave me such a high price, that I had a hard time believing it. I chatted about this with an associate of mine who pointed me to Master Auto Tech in Pasadena. The owner John looked at my car.... He explained what the issue could be and put me at ease. They did a deep dive into the car and a couple of days later told me the car was ready. I showed and John explained in detail the problems they found, and the work involved (they even took care of other issues found). The pricing was fair and still less than the dealership. It is great to find a place that cares not only about the car but the customer as well (you're not a number there). I can't recommend John and Master Auto Tech enough. One day, while leaning into my engine compartment with John, he explained what was wrong as he fixed it. It was a pleasant experience to have a mechanic talk to me and not act as if I was an idiot. He also listened to my engine run and told me good things and bad things. It was a very fruitful experience. I have since gone back again and again, for his honest work and having the sense that the mechanic actually cares. Prices are reasonable, and timing is great too. When that didn't work, he did not try to sell me an overpriced fix and instead recommended some inexpensive options to try. When I needed more help to fix the issues he did the work fast and low cost. His solutions were all pragmatic and explained well. One day I was at the shop and John and the other mechanic went out of their way to help a neighbor in distress. It was a demonstration of common decency and care that's often not so common anymore. I am new to writing any reviews on any format... I rarely have patience when writing though my conscience is catching up to me... This business and especially John Berbarian, the co-owner, deserves my mention and positive review. As of a couple years, this shop services my 91' Porsche 964 C2 and 02' Boxster S. Modern Auto Tech is owned and operated by car fanatic brothers Art and John Berbarian. They repair cars from all popular makes. * They have also repaired and restored many early 911s, including their own. A couple years ago, I first brought my recently purchased O2' Boxster S... It had a few niggling noises in the front chassis and issues with suspension. John took the time to go driving with me on various nearby roads to hear and notice what I was going on about, then took a deep dive using all sorts of sensors to go into the chassis to figure out where the creaking noises were coming from... he ended up torquing down pretty much every nut and bolt in sight from within the frunk and underneath the dashboard and front suspension. He also addressed all the suspension issues and only replaced the parts that needed replacing, using only oem parts, showing me exactly what was the issue with detailed explanations, everything accomplished in reasonable time. Since then, the only other repairs for this has been a faulty trunk release actuator, front brake rotor/pad, coolant fluid replacement and an oil change. All his product recommendations are of high-quality and correct to the make and model. If there's anything else that may be on the horizon, he will let me know, but does not do work that is not necessary until it is necessary. Regarding my 964, He repaired the air-conditioning system that another shop previously charged me an arm and leg for and didn't really know what they were doing ( that's another story) Now it blows cold and well in various modes.. happy in the summer! He explained how and why it wasn't working in the past and along with why it works well now. I love that. In another instance, my 964 was experiencing an intermittent misfiring issue on a rainy night... though it never was occurring during dry weather... I brought the car in and right away he located the OBD 1 oxygen sensor wire that was melted through because a previous mechanic, from another shop didn't measure the cable properly, exposing the wire to closely to other hot exhaust plumbing, making it to melt and causing an intermittent misfire when moisture would hit it. Simply replaced the OBD one sensor instead of haphazardly, guessing, and making me replace a particular relay as the previous shop had in the past... Hope that makes sense. He also takes care of any extra details that he knows I would appreciate or that my OCD nature asks for... All his work always comes with an estimate that is accurate and fair. It also doesn't hurt that his wife Jackie and daughter (sorry I forgot her name) are professional and gracious with my requests and taking down notes that are promptly relayed to John. In the end, John always goes out of his way to make sure I am satisfied and pleased. I can always count on him. If I'm not mistaken, John has over 30+ years of experience, and it shows. My Mercedes needed a Trans, Ferrari head job, Porsche engine was rebuilt, Lexus required Timing belt and air conditioning service, Range Rover needed an electronic control unit. Attached is an invoice for just one of our many visits and payments. It shows the AC/Heater being fixed when it had not been solved. When received, all the lights in the car were not working as well as continual problems with braking. Many of these problems were never fixed and or worsened. I would also like to point out that we were concerned about a rattling under the car because of the suspension. We reached out multiple times to have it inspected yet continued to be ignored by you or was told you would make time for it soon. But I found Modern Auto Tech and the owner, John, because of glowing online reviews and want to assure others that all stars are 100% deserved. Highlights: I called yesterday afternoon, sounding as worried as I felt and unknowledgeable as I am about a clicking noise under the hood of my car. I also mentioned that I've had a hard time getting an appt anywhere because of backlog from the pandemic. John fit me in this morning, did an inspection with his team while I waited, gave really candid and helpful advice about what was worth addressing (not only did he not upsell -- he talked me out of spending money on unnecessary body work!), and completed all of the repairs by the end of the day. After a long battle with a car wash over fixing the knocked off hood ornament on my Mercedes, I was referred to Modern Auto Tech in Pasadena. The car wash told me they would replace the star and paint the scratches on the hood, but they preferred that I take it to one of their two shops either in Canoga Park or San Clemente. I told the car wash folks it made no sense to drive my car 55 miles to paint the hood when I could walk around the corner and get it done locally. After a few months of battling back and forth, they finally suggested I take it to Modern Auto Tech in Pasadena. It seemed reasonable. Not too far from my house in Los Feliz and surely if they were paying for the repair, I, in good faith, would work with them. Their lot is exactly as described in an earlier review, a museum of beautiful cars in various states of repair. A classic Ford truck, several Porsches, a Mercedes or two, a throaty Ferrari on a rack and other pieces of cars around make the perfect setting for a Discovery channel show. John introduced himself and looked at the car and assured me that they would do an excellent job on the hood damage. They have a paint bay and all the trimmings to accompany their full service repair facility. I was having some brake shudder completely unrelated and asked John if, while he was doing the hood, he could put on new rotors and pads. I would supply the parts and he gave me a fair and reasonable price for the labor. As I waited for the brake parts to arrive, driving to breakfast the next morning, I heard a momentous thud from the back left section of the car. The rear window regulator broke and we were driving with a permanently open back window. Another call to the parts store replaced the window regulator so with a box of parts and few days to spare, I drove up to Modern and turned over the keys. I told John I was in no rush, to please take his time and he promised me he would get to it as soon as he could. In less than three days, John and his crew painted and sanded and clear coated the hood, replacing the Mercedes Star and holder. I had a few dings around the car and they color sanded what they could. The e320 Mercedes I have has headlights that fog and dull over time and John and his boys sanded and clear coated those. They installed the pads and rotors, replaced the serpentine belt, and fixed a bulb in the trunk that was blinking intermittently. Oh -- and I needed a new battery too. The work was all OUTSTANDING! I would recommend John and his company to anyone who wants quality car repair and stellar customer service. The price was extremely fair -- I can't believe cars aren't lined up around the block to get in to see them. This is one of those places that is such a tremendous discovery I hate for anybody but my close friends to know. But the truth is their workmanship and passion for what they do is so fantastic everyone who has a car they love and want running should take it to John, period. Thank you John. John has always been great and so has his staff. Always fixing my car quickly and often repairing little bits here and there at no charge and even one time did a clutch job when he knew I was broke. John saved me perhaps close to $2500 on a front and back brake job and that was just my savings on the labor. I had already purchased the necessary parts for my vehicle for the brake job, including such items as the pads, rotors and the brake wear sensors for my car: a 2013 Bentley Continental GT that I have owned for the past 5 years. I have also taken my 2012 Porsche 911 Turbo to John because he is knowledgeable about Porsches and other exotics also. John also told me, when I mentioned that I shop diagnosed a bad water pump on my 911, that I didn't need a new water pump for that car becasue it might just have been normal water seepage as is common on certain Porsches! He was correct in his diagnosis because I haven't seen a drop of coolant coming from the water pump... The other mechanic, an Independent Porsche shop in Southern California, which I choose not to mention the name of, was just out to make some easy money I assume, because they told me that I needed a new water pump for my Porsche, with only 24K miles on the odometer. I was smart to not trust the other shop and wanted to see what John would tell me about their claim... Do not hesitate to bring your German, Italian (or English car for that matter) to John for repairs or maintanance work! Not only were they able to get me a free diagnosis within minutes, they were able to restore the engine from horrible condition at half the cost.
