The inside of this place is very beautiful and modern. I decided to order the iced vanilla latte. The cup was about 16 FL ounces and the drink was 5 dollars which was sort of pricey but the drink was well worth it!! Didn't even need to add anything to it. If you don't like coffee drinks then you shouldn't go here. I will definitely be returning to this place!! read more

Literally I will drive two hours to Santa Cruz for Verve coffee so it is amazing that this place is a block away from my new work and serves Verve. The establishment is super modern and hip, and I love the geometric things that hang from the ceiling. I love the theme of red and black. I am also in love with their teas au lait, because Verve has this great drink that's called a Bowl Of Soul that is tea steeped in steamed soymilk with honey. Unfortunately, Modern doesn't do the EXACT same thing because they only use regular milk and don't do honey. However, it still tastes pretty good (not as good as the bowl of soul, but still decent). I tried the Jasmine one (they were out of the Jasmine Pearls) and the Rooibos. I didn't expect the Rooibos au Lait to be good but it was surprisingly really amazing! Also, it's way cheaper than a Bowl of Soul from Verve so my wallet loves this place too. The baristas are super friendly and patient. Unfortunately, they only have honey in packets which is kinda gross, so I wish they would get actual honey that the baristas can use. So in love with this place! I'm going to be here all the time. Need to try their coffee drinks too. read more

I really like their Kashmiri chai latte. I order with oat milk but this time my tea was made with regular milk by accident. I didn't notice until I left and didn't have time to go back to request a new cup. I've been here a few times and this is the first misstep. This review is for the ginger pear muffin that was set aside for me the other week. I used to work on 12th and Broadway where I discovered one of these modern coffee chains. I ordered a latte from that location and loved it. Then I got my husband into trying their coffee, but as usual, his love for pastries got the better of him when they are displayed behind that glass counter. He ordered a ginger pear muffin. We were hooked. The constant thought of that muffin can leave me salivating. There were multiple times that I've showed up too late to find no muffins left. The past few times, I would be awfully disappointed. Finally, on desperate measures, I called this location. They say they have one left and would hold it for me. We drove over an hour later and sure enough they saved it for me. Thank you, Modern Coffee. You don't know how much I love this pastry. They have great coffee, a great selection of teas, and are very knowledgeable. They also get pastries from Starter Bakery, which are so good. Their vanilla milk tea is the best, it's hard not to chug it. Also love the blackstrap coffee, which is sweetened with molasses.

I like this place because it's simple in coffee offering and decor. I got a mocha at $4.25 for the smaller cup. They used Verve coffee beans and also carry Stumptown, Counter Culture, and Chromatic. (I don't know the latter.) I like dark roasts which is counter to the Bay Area trend of light roasts so this was up my alley. Friendly service from the baristas. Small and cozy space. I've been here about 5 times now and felt I could opine. Overall this is a good place for 3rd wave artisan coffee. They have the right equipment and approach. A nice trend here in Oakland. Coffee is very subjective l, so find what you like. I have some feedback on Modern Coffee that you might find useful. 1. They seem to switch coffees and espresso blends occasionally. You might go there and enjoy the coffee and go again and find that their new brand isn't to your liking. It's all well sourced coffee, but again if you have subjective tastes (bright coffee vs. very roasty etc) you might have an inconsistent experience. 2. I've had a peculiar experience on my palate with their milk. Now bear with me. For some reason the milk they use (Clover organic?) when they stretch it leaves a "milky" "room temp cream" aftertaste that sort of coats the mouth. Hard to explain in writing. I don't know if it is from the lactose when they stretch it or what, but it is noticeable in their milk espresso drinks with more milk (latte or cappuccino). Am I crazy? I don't notice it at other similar shops (Coloso, Awaken, Duende, Farley's) so I think I'm onto something. If you don't experience that, then fine. However, it was noticeable to the point that I've started going for macchiatos from them in order to avoid the distraction. That's said, the fact I can even dwell the n a detail like that means that the overall product is good. Check it out and judge for yourself. Luckily there are other options if you find it isn't your brand. read more

I love Modern Coffee. I miss them dearly whenever I'm traveling or working over weekend without their company. Their location at The Leamington has swiftly become my go to place to get my soy chai or soy latte. The service is always wonderful. The entire staff is lovely. I especially like when Kristen, the owner is there so that we can talk about the 'haps' in the neighborhood. Anyhoo, I chose now to finally write my review because the service was extra awesome today. I walked in and there was one person ahead of me in line so it wasn't hectic at all which I like. I noticed that Isabel (I hope that's how you spell her name) was holding down the fort all by herself because the only other person with her was in break. When I stepped up to the counter to place my order a group of like 10 people came in! I offered to run the register for her which she politely declined for good reason. Isabel was calm, engaging and efficient even when 4 or 5 more people walked in shortly after. I got my drink in the same time that it usually takes. I don't think I have to say it but Isabel was amazing! I mean I would have panicked and cried or something. Since she was so awesome I might go get another coffee today not that I need it or anything. Modern Coffee, y'all rock! read more

My second favorite place to grab coffee downtown, and only because I like Modern's other location a tad bit better. Fantastic coffees, espresso drinks, and pastries. Just like their other location, they've got a revolving selection of roasters going on here, so you can check out different coffees on a regular basis. One of the best things about this place is that you can get a high quality coffee drink AND great friendly service. Awesome pastries too. This location is a bit airier than the other one, with high ceilings and a larger bar area. Still not a ton of seating, but good for grabbing coffee with a friend. read more

I work remotely most of the time, and the 19th Street location is a great space for me to work at for a few hours. The people at Modern are terrific and the coffee is 5 star. The only reason I give them 4 stars is the pastries could be better. If I could speak to the Owners I would say please find a new supplier. The pumpkin muffins have chocolate chips??? Those muffins should have pecans and raisins - not chocolate chips. The morning bun is too big and very dry. Checkout Starbuck's morning bun - it is very moist. That said this is still the best place for coffee in downtown Oakland. read more

The interior design of this place was on point - I actually googled the designer after leaving because I was inspired to use some of the aesthetic for my own home (one can dream) . . . not a great coffee shop to camp out for a long time and do work from what I could tell but a very nice atmosphere all around and a very cool building lobby behind with benches and a fireplace. read more
