Darrin was very professional, personable, efficient and all of my locks work perfectly (he re-keyed the entire house onsite). He charged exactly what he quoted and even got here a few minutes early. He also helped me with picking a lock that had no key (amazingly fast!) and removing some padlocks that had rusted closed from a lack of use. He also gave me some good tips on how to keep the locks lubed up (and how not to do it), installing and removing them for painting (soon), etc. and was a really enjoyable guy to talk with. I would recommend him to anyone - he's the real deal. Saved me some serious cash! Contacted Darrin about having some duplicate Infiniti keys made. The dealer wanted 3 times as much as Darrin quoted me. They ordered the keys and even stayed open late for me. I believe Darrin's son helped me out and was very polite and knowledgeable. Keys were cut and programmed without a flaw. Came here to make copies of some keys for the office. Service was quick and friendly. There was a person ahead of me but since I just needed a key copied, the gentleman asked the other customer if he could make my keys really quick since his needs seemed to be a little more time consuming. This is my first Yelp review because Darren and Modern Lock are so great. Darren has come out to my home since my first remodel in 1995. He knows his stuff, he'll come right away and he charges a fair price. I've recommended him to my neighbors and friends and now you know about him. He's worked with old vintage locks I've wanted to keep as well as new ones chosen by my contractors. He can do it all well. My front door got replaced and I wanted the original decorative knob and handle and he installed it perfectly. Recently I made a home improvement needing a new dbl bolt lock. Found Darin from yelp , I called him 8 o'clock in the morning for an estimate and make a 10am appointment/. He arrived before that , finished job in an hour. He gave me yelp discount $10.00. What does he do? He installed a deadbolt on the garage door (open a round hole) and replace a lock set for one restroom . All the lock he installed matched previous keys, what a nice thing. He finished job quickly and professional, charge are reasonable . I also ask him about the front door's lock problem , which is hard to open in the afternoon , he explained that cause by sun explosion, what a experience answer . A day before I call the other lock guy (another good one from yelp, I used him once), Available appointment was 3 days later. My garage emrgency key was lost and we could not open the garage by our remote control from outside due to the power having issues. Called Modern lock and security on Sat early in the morning at around 8 AM something and made an appointment with him at 9.40am. I also called a few other locksmiths and their price was 40% more than what this shop gave me. He came very on time, made two keys for us in a very short time. He also showed my tenants how to use the keys to unlock the garage in case of power being shut down. Overall, great job for excellent price. read more

I first met Darin and David (and the rest of the family) while they were making an attempt at an additional business in addition to their locksmith business about 10 years ago. Darin has always struck me as being a customer oriented person who will pursue all reasonable means to make a customer happy. I recently purchased a relatively new vehicle that only had one remote/key. Knowing the kind of inflated mark-ups that auto dealers charge, I procured the same manufacturer's part through a third-party at about 1/3 the cost. Though Darin's labor charge was about the same as that of a local auto dealership, having someone that you know and can trust do the work sure cuts down on the anxiety. David was able to cut the key, program the key transponder, and the remote in about 15-20 minutes and that included a bit of conversation and catching up on things that had transpired since I last saw him. The one issue that others have cited is that there is often no one at the shop, since this is primarily a father-son operation, and most of their work is done on customer premises. They do not have a fleet of trucks and a big staff, they're just trying to make an honest living. Got to give them credit for that. As for not getting an answer on the phone, you'll want to listen to their voice-mail message (I missed it the first time as well.) Apparently, if you don't get an answer during business hours, just hang up and dial again. I've always gotten an answer when I called back a second time. read more

Darrin is about as good as it gets for a locksmith in San Jose. I had a serious situation where I had to kick out a tenant because she was behind her rent for months. The police had to take over and give me the go ahead to enter into the house, and I needed a locksmith to come and change all the keys at a 30 minutes notice. I called around to compare other companies and all I got was a lot of flaky people not willing to quote me a firm price and not willing to come when I needed them. I went here to re-key 3 of my locks. I had called a few other locksmiths and I found this moderns price to be most reasonable. This is a father and son business and the son is the one I worked with. He said he had been re-keying for almost 20 years and it was evident with the speed and precision he worked with. Of the 3 locks, I did not have a key for one of them. I was handy enough enough to bring all the three locks to their store. They rekeyed it within a few minutes including the ones. He charged me 12$ per cylinder for the ones I had a key for and 17.5$ for the one i did not. I asked them how much they would have charged for them to come out to me and do it, they said the same price as above + 45$ for coming out to your home. Every other lock smith i dealt with wanted way more. Their keys are on the expensive side, 2.50$ a pop. Compare this with AA locks, Their quoted price was 15$ per cylinder the ones I had key for, and 45$ to make a key for the one I did not plus another 15 for rekeying (This was their quoted price on the phone). So way cheaper than anybody else. read more

We've now used Darrin's services 3 times in the past 6 years. On the first occasion, we had him re-key all exterior locks upon purchasing our new home. A couple years later, we had him back to replace a broken door handle/lock, and re-key it to the master.
