I had a truly horrific experience with Modern Mazda. A few months after purchasing the vehicle we immediately had issues with rodent damage. The car was seen and the technicians insisted they didn't see how rodents were entering the vehicle and sent me off. Not too much later I had another occurrence where they chewed up the interior of the car and we returned and filed a claim. Once the part came in we brought the car in to be fixed where they finally found the place of entry for the mice but it was too late, the entire underside of the backseat and all the wiring was chewed up and destroyed. This turned into a month+ long project. My car was in the shop for 25 days before we were ever offered a loaner vehicle. I received mixed messages regularly regarding the status of the job and was told multiple times the car was ready for pickup just to be delayed another week, then another week. When we did receive the car back it was in HORRIBLE shape. It was left stained inside and out, with missing pieces and an ill fitting gasket. Where's the oversight of quality of work being put out? The same day we picked up the car, we had to return it so they could fix the poorly finished job. Once I picked up the car yet again, I took it home to realize pieces of the seatbelt were missing. Again, WHERES THE OVERSIGHT? Not to mention they had cut or snapped the car seat covers I had personally purchased for this vehicle. When I brought the car back for the fourth or fifth time, they couldn't fix the seatbelt issue and asked me to come back AGAIN in another few days. The manager was present when I returned, but walked away, no apology or acknowledgement of the shortcomings of his business. My experience was so horrific I ended up selling the car altogether. I wish I had listened to my friends who also had a poor experience here. Please head this warning. read more

Where do I start? I love Mazda, but every facet of this dealership has been problematic for me, to varying degrees. SALES I: My daughter bought her first car here, and during the process, I test drove it with her. The salesman took my driver's license to make a photocopy, then failed to return it to me...until I was driving the following day and realized I was without it. Seems to me the protocol should be to IMMEDIATELY get the license back to its owner during this process. I've had sales staff in other places actually walk me to the copier to ensure license was promptly returned to me. SALES II: Deciding on a new Mazda, the exact vehicle was on their Thomaston lot. I was impressed with a wonderful gentleman from the sales staff, who met me on a Sunday for test drive, despite dealership being closed. Everything went well...until the Sales Mgr got involved in the process. For starters I was given an insultingly low, non-negotiable offer for my trade-in. (Subsequently received $2.5K higher offer from rival dealer) I also realized during the test drive that the vehicle had no NAV, a $400 add-on. When I questioned an exorbitant charge for a $70 SIM card and literally a :15 second install, the price was reduced to $200, or .0007% of list price. Yay. PARTS: I called regarding a TPMS for full size spare I was adding. I was quoted full list price. A lot of dealerships typically charge 20-30% discount from list pricing. Not Modern. I declined, and purchased online for 35% discount. SERVICE: The Mazda 6 is somewhat renowned for warping brake rotors. (Let's just say Mazda's engineering on brake components is not consistent with the rest of the vehicle) At 14k, I experienced the deceleration shuddering consistent with this issue. I immediately contacted service department for an appointment, and was advised that due to heavy repair bookings, they could not service my BRAKE ISSUE for THREE WEEKS. Given the gravity of the situation, this was an affront to my sensibilities, so I bit the bullet and had work done at my local shop the next day. So, given these circumstances, I'm hesitant to deal with Modern in the future. read more

I'm going to keep this as short as possible. Please read it through before deciding to do business with any "Shakers Group" business. I purchased a 15 Jeep Cherokee in March of 2024. Let's start with that and my attempt to trade in a 12 Corolla with 30K original miles, and it was a Florida car, so no rust. They offered less than 1500 for the car, so I sold it to another dealer who gave me 6k for it. I got the car home and a week later I heard a whistle noise and an exhaust leak. I have the exhaust flex pipe repaired at a local shop for 400$. I found the cabin filter housing was physically broken so I used zip ties to hold the door shut. Carfax report shows they replaced the cabin filter there, so they are most likely responsible for the damage. I carry on as I bought the car "as is" and I'm a reasonable person. Keep in mind, it's only been a week. I start to hear a growling noise while driving. Replaced the driveshaft for 2k with labor at a local shop. Had to go used because the driveshaft was 2k alone just from the dealer. Now it's April and every time I start the engine, I hear a knocking noise. The car is brought to a shaker group dealer and diagnosed as having a bad piston. They quote me 1500-ish to have the engine replaced, so my cost was 1500. Good on them because they will cover a portion of the repair. I guess their mechanic when taking it in from wherever didn't know what piston or rod knock was. Every time they showed it to me it was running. I believe this was to hide the knock on start up when it was cold. Finally get the car back in late May after they had the vehicle for a month. Communication was nonexistent. Every time I'd call, they said it would be done in a couple of days. Again and again. Finally pick it up and return to work, when 10 days later, I lost all my coolant. Back to the dealer... They find the thermostat housing was broke. They repair it. As a sidenote, it is normal to replace the water pump/housing, thermostat whenever the engine is out because they are cheap and easier to get to, but this dealer decided to skip that. It was repaired "under warranty/no charge". Remember that for the future. So, 9 months later I start to notice an oil leak. It was getting worse by the day, so I bring it in. They offered free diagnostic while they appraised it for a potential trade in. They offered 1500 in trade... for a vehicle I bought 10 months ago for 13k and put another $4k into shortly after purchase. They then tell me it has a bad oil cooler leak. It's leaking coolant. And the rear brakes are down to 2mm thick. Side Note - Law states brakes must have at least 50% life during sale. Anything less has to be replaced. Now, you can replace the front brakes 2-3 times before ever having to do anything to the rear, because 70% of braking is done at the front wheels. Meaning, they sold me a vehicle with rear pads below the legal limit. Also, they refused to cover the repairs under the one year warranty of the engine. Claiming the work was done as-is and there was no warranty. They even claimed to not be able to see the bill. My copy, which I lost, showed a 1 year warranty of the engine. The oil cooler is part of the engine and can also be the reason the coolant was leaking. They are not taking on their legal responsibilities. You offer a warranty, you have to honor it. They also sold me a pile of poop that I'm stuck with. Every time I get in my car I have to smell burning oil. It's leaking all over my driveway and my kids and family don't want to go anywhere in it with me. They also lost all my airbox screws and forgot to put the engine air filter back in. You can't make this stuff up! read more

My salesman, Edwin, was knowledgeable, patient, and helpful. Since my purchase a year ago, I have brought my vehicle in to their service department for routine maintenance. There was never any pressure, but we were already 99% sure that this was the car we wanted, just not sure where we were going to buy it. Be careful!! Purchased a car there from Ali. While the sales person was helpful, I was charged $200 for VIN etching even though it was not performed. Over the course of a month, I made two phone calls to the finance person, sent emails and still never reveived the refund which was promised. Overall I had a horrible experience with Modern Mazda while I was car shopping. I was in the market for a Mazda 6 and the Modern Mazda dealership was the closest to my house. I made my way to the dealership and was approached by a sales person (I believe his name was Edwin). From the start I was not impressed. First, Edwin was not very professional from the beginning. While we were looking at the car and during the test drive, he insinuated multiple times that the Mazda 3 might be better suited for us (this was purely based on the fact that the Mazda 3 was cheaper). Not sure why he assumed this since we never mentioned that the 6 was too high priced. I can only assume it was because we were young. When it can time for the negotiations, things when from bad to worse. Edwin was rude and condescending. At one point in the conversation, he actually said "I'm getting sick of this". Ummmm, okay, at that point we walked out of the dealership and didn't return. As a side note, we had done our research via TrueCar, Edmunds, etc., and our asking price was right in line with those sites. We ended up buying a Mazda 6 a few days later from the Mazda dealership in Hartford. read more

Best car purchase/lease experience I've had to date. I was looking specifically to purchase a per-owned 2014 Mazda six. I shopped at over a dozen places over the state and did hours of Internet research. Finally, I connected with Modern Motors. "Kim G" received an inquiry from me via the Internet. She contacted me right away. We discussed other options like "leasing" a newer vehicle with a more affordable payment. She was very upbeat, professional and patient Shortly after, I drove to the dealership to have my car appraised. Up until this point, I had the car appraised by at least six other dealerships. (My 2012 Mazda six was in beautiful condition.) All of the other dealers immediately would point out something slightly negative about my trade and make a major excuse as to why they could not give me a fair trade value. While my car was being appraised I was given a tour of the facility which was nice because 1. I knew where the men's room was right away! 2. I knew what kind of Service Department I would be waiting in while my vehicle was being serviced should I make the decision to buy from "Modern Motors." The customer wait room was very roomy, clean and looked very comfortable. When "Mike", the Service Manager returned he said "You have a very nice Mazda and I'm interested in selling it. He extended his hand and was very sincere. This was not at all like any of my past experiences. I felt as though I was being treated with genuine kindness and respect. "Kim" was very quick to get a couple cars set up to test drive. This is physical work and it was cold. She had no problem "hustling" even though I was not in a rush. She was professional during the test drive, she knew the Mazda products well and she had a fantastic "bubbly" attitude. The conversation during our test drive really couldn't go wrong. Of course, at the close of any test drive, a sales person will try and close a deal while they have you in the building. However, since leasing was new to me, I needed to research for a couple days and explained this to Kim. She reacted well with no rebound pressure at all. Kim even answered questions in the eve and on her day off. We communicated via Email for a couple days, arrived at a fair price for my trade and agreed on completing the sale this past weekend. My purchase experience was the same as my shopping experience with them. Kim was hustling. The rest of the staff was very friendly, politely saying "hello" with a smile. I asked Kim if she could have the financing person please not try and sell me insurance products for the car. I was thrilled this info was passed on to my finance person. He was also quite professional. He made a last minute change from 12k miles per year to 15k. He seemed to be happy to do it. He didn't try to sell me any products. The car was detailed beautifully and parked in front of the lot like a wrapped up Christmas present. Kim went over the cars features with me through a booklet and then again later in the car. We set up my I phone and discussed other safety features. In closing, "Kim G". did a fantastic job. The manager was "kind" and professional and the staff was warm and friendly. No problems or complaints...I will be staying loyal to them as long as they provide this kind of service! read more

First off, having contacted all 32 dealerships in New England and nearby NY, Modern had the best price right off the bat for the CX-9. Being local was also a bonus. Fish helped us out prior to taking delivery as all my paperwork wasn't finished between the lien and the insurance coverage. He was very prompt with calls and emails that whole day. My daughters 2010 Mazda 3i with 140000 miles (which she has owned since 2012) had suddenly developed a rough idle and lack of power on her way home from work on the highway after filling the gas tank. While I was driving the car, the CEL came on. I checked the codes and had lean fuel and random misfire codes. I cleaned the MAF sensor but that didn't help and now got other misfire codes within 5 miles of driving. It was suggested that it might be best to have Mazda look at it so I brought it to Modern Mazda. This turned out to be a bad idea as they seem to just throw parts at a bad code and don't troubleshoot. I explained to Marc the service advisor (cute title) what was happening. At the end of the next day, Marc calls and tells me that the engine has a misfire that needs to be corrected first and I tell him that IS the problem. He then tells me the engine has low compression of 155 (in all cylinders) and it should be close to 200. I tell him that 155 should be fine. He also says the 1 and 4 coils are bad and new plugs should be installed. I reluctantly agree. After thinking about it overnight, I call Marc in the morning and ask if his tech had swapped the 1 & 4 coils with 2 & 3 to see if the problem followed the coils since it was not likely that 2 coils went bad at the same time (they are $100 each). Marc replied that he did (I don't think he really knew) and besides, the tech stayed over and finished it last night and will call me after they check it out more. He calls later and says the car is fine, runs smooth with no codes. I was skeptical but drove out to pick it up on Friday and pay over $500. I start the car and it is shaking. I put it gear and while waiting for another person to move, the CEL comes on. I go back in and a flustered Marc says they will look at it again Monday. I call Marc Monday morning and suggest that the car still will show a misfire and if so, I just paid for 2 coils I didn't need. He snaps back that those coils were bad and tells me he will call after they look at it again. I specifically ask him if it could be bad gas since it started shortly after filling the tank and to relay that info to his tech. He calls at the end of the day and says it still has a #4 misfire and it is due to that low compression. I tell him that made no sense. He then asks if I want to leave it and they will look at it some more. I reply NO, I've seen enough. I then decide to go on my gut feeling of BAD GAS and drove the car around town to burn up the remaining half tank over the holiday weekend. I then filled it with new gas, cleared the codes and drove 20 miles with no problems. Next day, drove it 50 miles on highway and town roads with no CEL and the car is running smooth. I only go to this dealership to maintain the warranty but would not reccommend them ever. Went to get oil change and tire rotation, was charged for four tires and balancing as well. On the way home the low pressure tire light came on. I contacted Mazda service and was told "...oh honey your tireis losing air, you must have picked up a nail..." which was quite condescending. I went to a local tire shop, New England Tire, who checked the pressure, took it for a test drive came back and told me the sensors were not reset after the tire rotation. He explained the three step procedure to me and said I might have to done it once more but that I shouldn't have any probllem. My salesman (John Risk) was great, but the location is in the middle of nowhereville, CT. I live in Hartford now, so I don't feel the need to go back there. The finance guy was kind of an idiot, and they use Chase as the financer for leases. Chase is always terrible and they now charge you an extra month at the end of the lease where as before (with Mazda American Credit) they did not. Done with this location and with Mazda when this lease is up. See guys, when the customer isn't happy, you lose business. Go figure. read more

I had a wonderful experience at Modern Mazda. I had gone to the Mazda dealership in Hartford first and asked the salesman to tell me about the car (CX-5). He gave me very little information. I left feeling like I did not want to give them my business. I then went to Modern Mazda and Kim Gelada was my salesperson. Kim was wonderful!
