I LOVE the wall unit we designed as well as everyone at the company! I went to the Dumbo studio to see the products and speak with a designer to figure out what I want and what could fit. Note - you do not HAVE to go to the studio. It was just nice to see the finishes in person. My folks have a gorgeous Herman Miller wall unit that this is very reminiscent of. But this is an approachable price. Look at the new wood option of Essenza Oak. It is so pretty with the satin anodized metal. The team at Modern Shelving is very responsive and you feel very taken care of. No big box store feel at all. One note - factor in the cost of paying for an installer. This is not Ikea. Unless you really are an engineer type, I wouldn't recommend attempting to install yourself. However, Modern Shelving recommended a very good person to do the work. I have purchased one full custom wall system in 2020 for my study. Sure it was a bit pricey and it was worth the look and design compared to the other units I was looking at during that time. The initial order and delivery was fine and every thing arrived as ordered except for one slightly crushed leg. It was no big deal since I could hide against the wall during install. Installation is fairly straightforward and the unit came out looking gorgeous. Over the years, I have filled up the shelves and started looking to add more shelving / cabinets to the unit and that is when the problem started. I noticed that one of the original 31" wide shelving was starting to sag due to the weight of the books so I have to rearrange the books to take some weight off the longer shelves. I decided to add more height to the shelving (it was 8' tall when ordered and I wanted to add 2' length to it. They also comp'ed me at the time for that crushed leg and gave me a replacement for free. However, the extension pieces arrived in a different finish of aluminum and it took them 2 more tries to get the finishing correct. I ordered some aluminum shelves online for added strength but when they arrived, I realized they they are only 8" deep and not the 12" that I thought I was gonna get. CS was like tough luck. I was going to add 4 more open cabinet boxes to house my books due to the need for structure and strength for the books that I own. I got a quote in 2022 and it was $2850 at the time for them). I was busy with work so didn't complete the purchase back then. Fast forward to end of 2024 and beginning of 2025, I needed to reorganize my office so I wanted to order the cabinets now. I got in touch with them and they said they can't reactivate the old invoice and had to start fresh. So I booked a design consultation and the designer had not done his homework and look into the dimensions of my old unit. He gave me the standard quote for the cabinets for 2750 shipped. I reviewed the invoice and noticed that the depth is incorrect (1" deeper than my space would allow). I had to reschedule another Zoom Meeting with him to go over the detail dimensions once again. This time, they came back with a quote of $5280 shipped! That is almost double of what was previously quoted in 2022. He cited that is due to increase in material costs. Mind you that these are not fancy hardwood cabinets. Instead, they are just cheap laminate particle board boxes... Needless to say, I would not be buying from them any more since it is such a rip off. There is no way that particle board could have gone up from 2850 to 5250 in 2 years. I have contracted with a local Phoenix cabinet builder to build solid walnut boxes for 20% of Modern Shelving is trying to charge me for their laminate cabinets read more

Like so many others, the design process was great, and everything after that - fulfillment, installation, customer service - left much to be desired. I ordered my system in late November 2024, and it took through May 2025 to correctly receive all the parts I needed. I lost count of the number of times I had to go back to customer service to say that the wrong parts were delivered, items were damaged or produced incorrectly, or pieces remained missing. It felt like receiving a grab bag of components each time I received a package - a little of something useful, a whole lot of random metal crap that didn't match. Customer service stopped responding for days or weeks at a time, and I had to resort to hunting them down on social media to get a response. The installation process as an individual homeowner was difficult at best, particularly hard when you are trying to make pieces come together with components that don't match the instructions. There are many logical ways these shelves COULD be fit together to last decades, and yet Modern Shelving followed none of those best practices. While I like the look of the (finally) completed product, it feels like a very expensive miracle that it came together. read more

Absolutely do not purchase from this company. My partner and I ordered shelving for our office. We received several defective pieces - none of our shelves fit together, and only stay flat with heavy objects on top. One of the brackets arrived broken. What has been most frustrating is the fact that we have been privately trying to solve this with the company for over 2 weeks. We reached out via email, but they insisted that we text them instead and resend all the info and photos we had already sent via email. They have been unprofessional, unknowledgeable, and unresponsive. It seems like they have no idea what product they're even selling. They've refused to send us any replacement parts or issue us a refund, and have habitually just stopped responding to us until we reach out again. We literally just wanted replacement parts and did not want to have to escalate to posting negative reviews and issuing chargebacks. Based on the other reviews we're reading, the poor quality product issues and complete lack of professionalism has not isolated to us. We regret not doing our research before spending this much money on a defective product. read more

I was a little worried based on some previous reviews, but the combination of the look and the price (well below some similar systems) made me go with Modern Shelving. We have a 12 foot ceiling in our dining room / kitchen area, and since that is the most popular room in the house we thought it would be a good place to centralize our many books. I chose the aluminum PAL shelves with white powder-coated shelves to keep things bright (I also liked that the shelves I saw in the online gallery were very minimal, letting the books or other objects take up your attention). In any case, we ordered a system of 3 "bays" with a custom height extension to go to 9 feet high. The ordering process was smooth, and I received the items within a few weeks, about what I'd been told to expect. Unfortunately, one of the support poles was damaged (bent) and one necessary screw was missing, but Modern Shelving was prompt in sending the replacements (though getting them took about 10 days from when I reported the issue), and then I was able to assemble the system fully. The shelves look GREAT, and we are constantly getting complements -- many centered on how "light" and unobtrusive the shelving is. But judge from the photos. The small hiccup of damaged parts was the only problem I had, and honestly I suspect we're going to be enjoying these shelves for decades, so I am still giving the full five stars. Despite the issue, we found Kristy and others at Modern Shelving to be very responsive. We're very satisfied, and would definitely recommend Modern Shelving. read more

I've had two custom projects with them, and both times small parts were missing. It takes weeks and months to finally be resolved with constant back and forth asking for missing parts. We purchased two bookshelves to keep our books and media. We cannot be happier with the order. The poles and shelves are aluminum and of high quality. We ordered them to be closer to the wall than the standard size which helped with the minimalistic design. We liked them so much that we ordered more for our daughter's room to store her books, toys, and trophies. We were able to customize the order to 5' high. As others have noted, we ordered online, then waited and waited for delivery. Finally, the shelves arrived, but not the metal poles to mount them on. Our sales rep, who had been SO helpful before we ordered, disappeared. No response at all to half a dozen emails and voicemails. At first I thought maybe he was on vacation, but no, he just couldn't be bothered once he had our order. Finally, after many attempts to try and contact someone (you'll notice there is no phone number on their web site, and the chat bot doesn't do anything except ask for your email), I finally got a real person, who had the poles shipped out. They were supposed to send one missing shelf at the same time - we wanted one to be deeper than the others to hold a turntable. Months later, still not here. I mistakenly believed this would be a high-quality product, justifying the high price, but not so. The cheap-looking wood laminate was a disappointment - though at this point we may never have the full set of items in hand to be able to assemble it. So I have no idea how it may look at some point in the distant future when we *may* finally have all the items clearly noted on our order confirmation. read more

I'm an interior designer, and I do not recommend this product. I purchased a wall unit for my home, and it has been sitting unassembled in my Living Room for over 2 months. Eight cabinet pieces arrived damaged, four of which were very visible and needed to be replaced. Once the replacement pieces arrived, it was discovered that the black poles had been powder coated incorrectly, and there was a silver stripe down the middle of every pole (please see the image below). After first telling me that they were supposed to be finished this way, and then shipping me an entire different set of poles with the same issue (after assuring me they had personally inspected them prior to shipping), they are now no longer responding to emails. There is absolutely no quality assurance, and there is no follow through with customer service. I couldn't be more disappointed. read more

This review was a long time coming because I believe in giving feedback directly to small businesses and giving them an opportunity to course correct rather than posting publicly. I sent detailed written feedback after my experience and never heard back, so I feel like I need to give an honest review. I ordered shelving for my home last year. The journey to get it delivered and installed was pretty bumpy, and the finished product was less than perfect. - I ordered the shelves in February, and by April they hadn't arrived so I followed up. Somehow they were lost in shipping, so a second order was expedited, and I got the shelves in May. - I was ordering the natural wood veneer, and I was required to sign a statement that I understood that the finish on the veneer would have inconsistencies due to the variability in the wood grain. Fair enough. But many of the shelves I received had one or both sides where the finish was obviously not done carefully or was damaged. - I had email confirmation of the final measurements of the shelves I had planned with the team, but the measurements of the shelves I received were incorrect. The shelves barely fit. One more 1/2" off and they would not have fit where they were being installed. - I requested installation instructions and was sent a link to a Box account with pdf files that didn't include instructions for the type of poles I ordered. Fortunately I was able to reach someone via chat over the weekend who was able to send me the correct instructions and talk me through it on the phone. This help on the weekend was the one bright spot in the customer service experience. - During installation I discovered that one of the upright poles was defective and was too wide in just the exact location where I wanted the shelf bracket to be. I went and bought a metal file and had to file down part of the bracket so it would fit on the pole. Unfortunately I can't say I recommend this company for residential mail order purchase because of all of the customer service and quality issues I experienced. read more

We built our shelving system with the WAL mount and we could not be happier. Support, ordering shipping was a breeze. A great advantage of the WAL system is that your vertical tracks can be alligned with the studs inside your wall. This is extremely important if like in our case you are dealing with an old lath and plaster wall where you need to tie into wooden studs in order to make your shelving work structurally. The system is not reliant on a fixed grid distance between the tracks. Our book collection is 95% heavy art books which is not an issue at all for these shelves while looking absolutely minimalist even with the heavy duty brackets that we used in our case. The result looks clean and beautiful and the system itself can be grown infinitely. The only issue we have is that we are already running out of wall space otherwise we'd add more of this system. read more

I purchased a double unit with drawers and I'm hugely disappointed. When I received all of the parts I was putting it together and discovered that one of the brackets to attach an arm to the wall with machine incorrectly. I was promised a replacement multiple times over a couple of weeks before they finally dropped it in the mail. Much more problematically, as I started to put together the "walnut" drawer units (which are made of cheap particle board) I discovered that the top drawers are wobbly and don't work particularly smoothly and the bottom drawers can't really be installed because the holes to attach the cabinet to the rails are right under where you attach the drawer slides. The slides can't sit flash and so the drawers can't be installed. Their clever solution was for me to drill new holes. The salesperson even said that they used to *not* drill holes, so I'm lucky that I had a couple of them actually drilled. I don't know if this was all incompetence or if this is a pyramid scheme. I had been looking for a modern look shelving system in metal that could be customized for quite some time. I came across Modern Shelving and it was a dream come true! I have two niches around a fireplace that are 36 inches wide by 12 inches deep by 108 inches tall. Modern Shelving's aluminum units were just the trick. The staff was easy to work with and was patient with me as I changed the design a few times but nonetheless they provided quick design turn around. The final design, with one media cabinet, was perfect!! The price was reasonable and the turn around time was great!! And it looks good too!! Total time to install was 3 hours for 2 units. Please steer clear. Refer to Gregory's 2/18/2017 review - he hit the nail on the head with his statement of Modern Shelving's "zero integrity" policy. I, too waited for a month to receive my order. Upon receipt of the order, *several* items were missing, and of the items that I did receive, EVERY single one was damaged in one way or another. At first, Kristy apologized and promised that management would personally inspect replacement items. When I inquired as to just how long these replacement items would take to arrive (I cannot be waiting around for another month,) she too fired me as a customer as Gregory experienced. Kristy implied that my expectations were simply too high - this is a mid- to high-end product at a high end price point. I should not need to lower my expectations at such a price, and simply accept shelving channels which are scratched, brackets which are dirty and whose finish is completely wrong. In a nutshell - I waited for a month and spent $100 for products which I quite literally wouldn't purchase out of the "As-Is" section of my local Ikea. read more

After ordering, they followed up with many e-mails making sure that I was happy.
