It started with high notes with good appetizers but with bad service and main dish and roti - naan, disappointment. I sometimes wish It was more fresh..., I just can't tell when it was made. The entrees are pricey for dinner. Like most Indian places, you'll probably have a better experience if you go for a lunch time buffet. It is more cost effective and you try more. Moghul is one of the original Indian restaurants on Oak Tree Road in Edison, NJ! I appreciate the variety in sabzi and their attempts to stay both true to traditional dishes and try unique new food trends. Lately, I have found that - relative to comparable restaurants - Moghul tends to be much pricier with significantly smaller portions. The food that you receive is tasty, but nothing out of the ordinary. I would encourage them to lower their pricing or increase their portion sizes. It would be nice if one plain basmati rice or the option of a bread would be offered at no additional cost per sabzi. Eating here (or getting take out) can quickly become very hard on the wallet! One tip if you like potato sabzis, pass on the ones here. On numerous occasions, I have found the potatoes to be large chunks that are not cooked through well, making them tough to eat - borderline inedible. Additionally, the achari aloo tastes like pachrangi pickle oil has been added to the dish. It is fairly amateur and not something I recommend to anyone. The following are always decent: Bhindi masala - nicely cooked, garnished with tomatoes and onions, good sized pieces Malai kofta - the kofta are oddly large but the flavor is delicious of both the koftas and the creamy curry Navratna korma - nice flavors, could use a little more variety in vegetables but overall tasty Dal makhani - perfect accompaniment Cucumber raita - a nice cooling side As for desserts, skip them and head over the kwality - especially if you just want some ice cream. read more

A decent Dine-In option among the many Indian restaurants on Oak Tree road with Good service. As many only rely on fast-food model, it's pleasant to sit comfortably and enjoy dinner with family here. Food is OK with good variety on menu along with few New Items. No stand outs. Our group tried Reshmi Kabab for appetizers, Chicken Tikka Masala, Fish Hara Masala & Kofta Aamcha for entrees. Kofta Aamcha was a different prep than regular Kofta dishes. In breads Rumali Roti was well made and usually not found in other restaurants. With so many other restaurants to still try out, only time will tell if we ever go back here. read more

I visited Moghul with my 2 sons on Sunday, 19th Feb for the lunch buffet. We called up before going to check whether the buffet was available and also the price. We were informed that the buffet lunch was available and the price per person was $ 21.95 plus taxes. When the check was brought to us, we found that the restaurant had levied a service charge of 20 per cent on the buffet cost. This is totally unacceptable and the restaurant needs to act ethically by being transparent upfront on the cost. Will not visit this restaurant again. read more

It sits on the famous Edison, NJ Oak Tree road strip. Prior Yelp reviews range from terrible to perfect. Our experience with three other adult couples was much closer to good than bad. They refused to take reservations. Ok. They said that at the time I was booking 8 p on a Saturday, they are "first come first serve." We came. And they sat us immediately. There were a lot of Indian families eating together which was a good sign. Our waiter was prompt and polite and offered us ideas like chicken tikka masala (the non-Indian consumer's classics). The waiter suggested all the typical non-Indian standards to our table of 8 nonIndians which I thought was ok one hand cOurteous but on the other hand kind of demeaning. My review is poor in detail but I can tell you we ordered a large assortment of apps and they were all eaten 100%. The ones that I recognized (saag, dahl, whole tandoori chicken) were at least as good as anywhere ive eaten in NJ. The other dishes I didn't recognize were pleasurable and tasty. We randomly ordered a lot of stuff and there was no food left. I aLso admit we chose this place partially based on the fact that they had a liquor license which is kind of a rarity in Edison. Don't expect any fanciness or mixology - they will make you what you order. In short, it's good Indian food no doubt. Atmosphere is good - not great. Full bar a positive. I don't think I'd travel again for this place when I can eaT at Brick Lane in Montclair. The delta is not significant enough. But after dinner we Ubered to an Indian bakery for their famous barfi. Went back to the buffet with a couple that had not been there in a few years. Both the quality of the food and the choices of the buffet have declined. Some of the trays were empty or close to empty and were not replenished. Good but not as good as it was. Table service was ok; water was refilled regularly. A different reviewer mentioned the adding of an 18% to the bill. I can see that bothering some who eat at the buffet. While that didn't bother me, what I didn't like was that, when we split the bill to 2 credit cards, the meal amount and the tip is included in the top line and if you're not paying close attention, it's reasonable to overlook that you've already been charged for the 18% tip and add another tip. read more

DONT EAT AT THIS RIPOFF I have been coming to Moghul for 5 years and today is my LAST DAY HERE. 1) the appetizer was old. Chicken 65 was clearly a few days left over 2) we were a part of 4 and were charged 18% mandatory gratuity.. at a buffet that is ridiculous. Disappointing food was horrible tandoori platter was dry and burnt plus they use red color dye a very unhealthy for consumption, when I mentioned that meat is dry they were trying to justify that it's a bone not the meat... Bryani was totally something else seems like they made curry and mixed rice in it, overly spiced and soaked in curry we were not able to eat more than a spoon, samosa seems so steal like it was refried again stuffing was heavily spiced. Wow! The best one I've been to in a long time! There have been places nearby, but they can't compare to Moghul. We were invited by a former student of mine and her family. They knew what to order, for sure! Every dish was mouth-watering and simply delicious! The tandoori chicken was so scrumptious! The nan bread was freshly baked/cooked to perfection! The portions sizes were very small, the service was terrible as it felt like we were in a fast food restaurant, dessert (Rasmalai) was served in a Tupperware container, and they had no coffee to offer at the end meal. This place served without hesitation one of the worst Indian meals I've ever eaten in a very long time. As background my father's restaurant for the better part of 7 years was around the corner from Mitali West as a kid. I've had some of the best "Indian" food ever in Lahore, Pakistan while on business. This restaurant had all the bad signs that would normally send us away from eating at a restuarant, disproportionate ratio of white and non-Indian patrons relative to Indians, majority of patrons including the sparse number of Indians eating with utensils and not their fingers, unfriendly hostess which we will call the "bitch" who was only friendly to other Indians, lack of red onion chutney on the table, 50% of the tables empty on a Friday night, Mexican cooks. But since we figured that our favorite Indian restaurant XXXX , which I won't name it as its always too packed to even get into the parking lot we would try this place. The samosa we had filling had dark potatoes and peas as if it had been sitting around too long. There was some form of nasty salt pickle condiment on the table. The lamb gosh that I had was devoid of all genuine Indian spices, and the dish did not look as if it was constituted in itself long enough for all the flavors to be extracted. I ordered medium spice and my dish was bland. The spinach which is normally melded into the dish looked as if it was frozen and the lamb pieces were tough and did not fall apart. My fiance's chicken makhani was like eating a salt lick, but other than this was devoid of Indian spices. I'll be the first to say that anyone can become a chef at a restaurant. My dad had a Jamaican dishwasher who we called Moon who ended up being one of our cooks. In this case though, these cooks were imposters cooking up joke Indian food. I could not have been anymore disappointed. I almost forgot, the service is awful never mind the bitch of a hostess who was nasty to my fiance. The waiters did not offer to get us seconds on drinks or even ask us what we wanted to drink and it was also insanely slow. If you are around Iselin just save yourself the trouble and avoid this place...it can hardly call itself a good Indian restaurant when most of its patrons look like Joe guidos who couldn't tell fight their way out of a paper bag when it comes to identifying good indian food. My wife and I have been coming here for years now. The service has always been impeccable, as well as the food. But I'm curious to know why they tacked on a service fee to the bill? We've always tipped 20% in the past . Is the waitstaff getting that money? I would like to hope so. And I would be extremely disappointed if they didn't , since they work very hard to provide a pleasant dining experience. Well if you are a fan of Indian food this is a place to add to your bucket list. Had lunch there today with a client. Lunch is a buffet with a good selection of very authentic Indian food. Tandoori chicken is one of my favorites. Basket full of freshly baked naan at every table. Murgh Tikka Masala was tender and very flavorful. Don't ask me the other items available on the buffet menu. I can't spell them or say them but they were delicious. By the way if you want to sample some great Indian food this is the neighborhood you want to visit. And this is a great restaurant to start. I'm surprised this place is only a three. Compared to the pricier, more ghetto options I have in NYC, Moghul's grrrrrrrreat! My party arrived on a Saturday before their buffet began, but after asking, they let us sit down inside and watch them set up the food. They weren't the most attentive at any time during our meal, but I never found them rude or uninviting. Now for the food. Wow. Who knew that white chicken meat could be so tender? Who knew that you can mix chicken makhani and chicken tikka? Who knew that you can find hakka (Chinese-Indian) food in NJ? Everything was yum and seemed very authentic, though I will never pretend to be an expert on Indian food. During our meal, the restaurant filled up quite a bit. I went here with bigger expections. 1. being that since we're from south jersey the nearest place to go for good indian food is always central jersey where the indian population is at it's highest. and 2. judging from the grandier of the outside, the restaurant the place looked so eye appealing I was sure the food would surpass all expectations. Although the restaurant was beautifully decorated and the facility was very clean. Our food came out to be only mediocre. The only good thing about our food was the naan... The aloo papri chat was good, served cold and definitely a tongue teaser. I wish I could say the same for our main entrees. My fiance is a tikka masala guy and I ordered Gosht Kadai. Our dishes came out and I think they must have mistaken our palates for those of the weak variety. It had no hint of spice at all. We love our dishes indian spicy... I think I would have been more accepting if the dishes came out robust in flavor with no hint of spice, versus what we got, blande and no hint of spice. As a restaurant, Moghul isn't the best (at best, 3 stars). Catering-wise, amazing. Moghul is known to provide really delicious Indian food, but we all know that this must come at a price. We shied away from dining at Moghul just thinking about these prices but then we though, eh why not? The ambiance inside is pretty much the same as other nice sit-in Indian restaurants, nothing really different. You're offered hot towels. Your napkins probably smell of Indian food and your clothes probably will once you walk out of the restaurant. Oh well, at least we use some pretty good spices :) I wasn't really particularly impressed with the food and the price we paid, I definitely felt there was some disparity. And our service and experience wasn't THAT amazing to warrant such prices. On the other hand, I went to a wedding that was catered by Moghul. What a wonderful choice of food! None of that "too much tomato" or "too much yogurt" in your curry to make you feel like you have severe heartburn. I really hate when I go to all these fancy affairs and the food just isn't up to par. The food was so good at this wedding that I'm really sad my family and I missed the appetizers! Everything was brought out in a timely fashion and presented really nicely.
