We were the only patrons on a Sunday evening around 6pm. The restaurant didn't have much decorations and the bathroom had an unfinished/broken cabinet under the sink. We both got the braised oxtail entree which was $45. Although it was delicious and filling, we didn't feel like the dining experience justified the price. They had an extensive mocktail menu but we were not offered a wine/cocktails menu.
I came to Moi Moi last night for dinner. They also featured the Futureband for a 2 hour set. They were amazing btw! It was great for a date night! This wasn't my first time at Moi Moi, but my first review. I have appreciation for this restaurant as not only is it black owned, but also family run. I had the Berbere Spiced Lamb Chops that comes with brussel sprouts and mac & cheese. This was one of my previous favorites. The lamb was cooked just right and quite flavorful. The sides hit the right spot as well! I will say, the service was lacking for me this time around. We had gone a long period of time without our server checking in on us and we weren't offered dessert either, but I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt and say it was probably due to the live music event.
Nice, but I wasn't impressed. First of all, I made a reservation through OpenTable and some hours before we were due to arrive, I received an email stating my reservation for outside seating was cancelled by the restaurant. Now, that very well could've been a system glitch, but regardless of what the deal was, it was red flag #1 for me. I called just to make sure the restaurant wasn't closed or anything and I was ensured they still had me down. Second, as we walked up to the restaurant, I personally didn't even see how it would've been possible to comfortably enjoy a meal outside. The outside area was more so setup for lounge vibes, which could be used for restaurant vibes as well, but I wasn't sitting out there. We were seated inside and then told that the only drinks being served were fountain drinks and mocktails...they were "supposed" to receive their liquor license "that day" according to the hostess, but that clearly wasn't the case. That was SUPER confusing to me. I mean I know stuff happens, but why don't y'all have y'all's liquor license? What happened? Further more, the fountain drinks were severely overpriced... $7 for a coke??? As for the food, it was sort of suspect how quickly it came out. Food wasn't hot to my liking, but I proceeded to eat it. After a few bites, I discovered some of the lamb pieces to be a little cold. Additionally, my sister, who ordered the chicken dish, didn't believe her chicken was cooked all the way since there was a little blood. The service and the music were the best parts! Our server was great and I really enjoyed the music. Glad I can say I tried it, but I definitely won't be back.
Brand new West African cuisine restaurant on the coveted K Street. Ambiance - sophisticated sleek with a live DJ rocking Afrobeats as you enjoy great conversation and food. Downside: they desperately need a hostess stand. When you enter, you're sort of waiting for someone to notice that you need to be greeted and seated. Not sure whose job it was to think about that very big detail, but the mark was missed. Food - yes, yes and yes! Chef did his thang! I tried a few things, but wasn't able to snap a pic of everything. Spice permeated through everything, and it was done so well. I would recommend their crab cakes (one of the best hands down), and their Porgy with Ghanaian yam...the yams though!? And the spice!? Epic. Please support this newly opened black-owned restaurant. You'll definitely have a great time. Visit on a Friday to enjoy Afro-Caribbean vibes while you indulge in the delicious food.
Moi Moi is a well decorated restaurant with a chill and welcoming vibe. A friend and I went on a Thursday evening with a 6:30pm reservation. Parking sucks, so prepare to walk. I walked from my hotel, so I didn't have to deal with that. I ordered the catfish fingers, the fried artichoke, and the fish with jollof. My favorite was the catfish fingers and the invigorating arugula salad it was served with. The fish and salad went so well together. The artichoke was also really good and perfectly fried. I thoroughly enjoyed (and finished) them both. The fish with jollof was good but not great. Overall, the dish was packed with flavor and was perfect in complexity of flavors. I only had a few issues with this dish, but none of those issues stopped me from enjoying it. First, I wish it had a non-starchy carb component, like maybe some sautéed greens or something. Although it had root vegetables, the dish was very heavy on the starches. Second, the fish was soaked in sauce, so you couldn't see that it had bones in it. I think I may have eaten a small bone or two when I first started eating it. This is a possible choking hazard--so they should tell folks. Third, the jollof rice wasn't my favorite. It was definitely not bad--just a little dry and wasn't near some of the top quality jollof rice I've had. My friend had the pasta dish and she said it was really good. Her only complaint was that there weren't enough noodles in the dish. So once she ate all of the noodles, there was a lot of sauce left. All in all, I would certainly return. I have to get the catfish and artichoke again. I think I would try the whole fried fish next time. Plus, the waitress, Kayla, was super accommodating and respectful of my dietary restrictions. I appreciate that!
Moi Moi was amazing! The service was top tier and the food was undeniably good. I will be back.
Really enjoyed this place. Went for black restaurant week so I got a 3 course meal. Jerk chicken for the appetizer, lamb chops with Brussel sprouts and macaroni and cheese and bread pudding for dessert. I ordered the lamb chops medium but they came back well done. They were still delicious nonetheless. I will definitely return in the future
The ambiance and the decor are very inviting. The staff is very inviting and supportive. They welcome you in and they treat you like family. The menu is extensive with traditional African flair with a American mix. I recommend the lamb and the Jollof rice, both are outstay and the lamb is cooked to order and is very moist and well seasoned. The max and cheese is another very delicious item on the menu, it is very creamy and good. They sometimes have live bands. They also are great for large gatherings. They have a full bar that offers some great selections and Moi Moi special drinks and then after hours they offer hookah and music, it is a spot I recommend and will be visiting again soon.
While in DC the girls and I got together and went to this restaurant. When we arrived they said there was no indoor seating available in this very nice restaurant. Which by the way didn't seem to be the truth at all but we sat outside anyway. We were served by a very nice young man. I was starving so I ordered the chicken yassa. When it came out it looked delicious. I dug in and didn't particularly care for the taste. It tasted like a lot of mustard in the seasoning. I was hungry so I ate it anyway. I tried a couple of the girls dishes and the fish was good. The bill included a 20% gratuity. All in all I had an ok experience.
Moi Moi was definitely a vibe! I was there from 5-9:30pm. I didn't know that they had a live band come in the evening so that made the night even better. The menu is limited on Sundays to brunch and a few items from the dinner menu. I had the lamb chops, Mac n cheese with Brussel sprouts and a side of jollof rice. The dish was good but It wasn't amazing. However, the service, the atmosphere and the hookah made up for that. I will return on another night to try the actual dinner menu but as for Sunday evenings, as long as Top 5(the band) performs, I will be there!
This restaurant has traditional African cuisine that meets Southern Soul food. I highly recommend this restaurant it's a total experience and "Chef" is amazing along with his staff. Beautiful ambience!
I got a chance to go to Moi Moi with my old roommate from college. We good time. I was very critical about their cuisine because I am West African myself. The jerk chicken was the best part of the meal. I was pretty upset of the quality of Jellof fries they served. Although it was good it was nothing like what I am accustomed to and grew up eating. The arugula salad was pretty refreshing. I was a big fan of the drink they had on the menu. The drinks were pretty strong which set off a good tone for the rest of the evening. I personally believe some of the food is overpriced but I enjoyed the meal.
The Gambia will always be one of my homes. So walking into Moi Moi was incredibly cathartic. Where else will you get spot on Domoda, or chicken yassa? The head chef...just speaking to him and knowing that the dishes that have been created come from a space in his heart and being--that resonates so clearly with ours, was so touching. You CANNOT go wrong with the domoda or yassa. Seriously. The meat is so tender, the portion size is generous. The flavors that are pulled out are potent and you can feel the home roots so deeply. The inside is so fun! So well decorated and both sexy and classy. The music is such a treat! The staff is both kind and attentive AND...gorgeous lol. What a fun spot for a date, or a gathering of friends. Check it out!
Great Upscale African/Gambian Restaurant in the heart of DC. I was able to get parking right outside of the restaurant because of the day and time I went (less busy). The restaurant aesthetics were STUNNING! However, the bathroom needs a renovation. FOOD/DRINKS: The mocktail I had was refreshing and very delicious. I want to thank the owner for the excellent service, experience, and recommendations. I ordered the 3-courrse Tasting Menu. The fufu and okra were okay. The shrimp appetizer was delicious, but the sauce was a bit spicy. For my entree, I had the Gambian Jollof rice which was okay and the oxtail stew, which was so good. Lastly, the owner recommended the bread pudding cake with pecan ice-cream. That was SO, SO, SO DELICIOUS!!!! The overall experience: 10/10 except the bathroom, which was spacious but not as clean and stylish as I would have expected. That was a 5/10. Want more authentic opinions? The food here was a diligent delicious and the service was outstanding. I made a last minute reservation to this place on a Sunday and they did not disappoint. To my surprise this establishment was pretty empty for a Sunday but who cares about that. The drinks were very good and everything was made fresh in house with fresh ingredients even down to the ginger lemonade. I indulged in the veggie omelet with the salad and boy was it amazing. Whatever dressing they used on that salad, I wanted to take a bottle home with me. It was that good. My friends really enjoyed the suya because it was so flavorful. But would pass on the greens because they were sweet. This place is pretty pricy but well worth a try. read more

Moi Moi is a great restaurant. If you love West African, Caribbean, and American food, this place is for you. I went this summer and made it in again. I hosted a large group brunch a week ago. I coordinated it with the manager a week prior to the event. The manager wasn't there, but When we arrived, our table was plated and the reception was very warm. For my drink I had a Mandingo ! It was strong. For brunch, I ordered the coconut French toast which was delicious!!!! I highly recommend. The servers and the Sunday manager were excellent and as our group grew, they made amazing accommodations. I met one of the beautiful bartenders who is from Boston (which I am ) so it made the experience even more homey ! I also tried the suyA which was delicious and the jerk chicken. During the dining experience, the chef came out and I was able to introduce myself and tell him how good his food is !! Everything was seasoned perfectly. This family run restaurant is a different place for date night, mixers, corporate meetings or girl nights. read more

The food here was delicious and the service was amazing! I highly recommend the short rib dish. The sauce was not too overpowering and the meat was soft and perfectly tender. The portion size for the dishes is also great and easy for sharing. After the meal, we were debating which desserts to get and our server gave us two for the price of one, giving us an opportunity to try both the sweet bread pudding and the mango cobbler. Both were divine. I can't wait to come here again! read more
Came here with my sister and girlfriend while visiting DC. The food was really really good. We got the short ribs, Jollof rice, and the rockfish. We also got mussels as an appetizer. Everything tasted amazing but the best was the ribs, then the jollof rice. The hostess was very nice, she even took our orders and was giving good recommendations. The restaurant itself was decorated very nicely. My only complaint is the fact that the door to the restaurant opens up straight into the dining room and it happened to be a cold night so every time someone came or left, cold air blew into the entire place. read more

Moi Moi was a random got to for stress relief after a tough couple month need to get a drink. I was referred to this place by a friend say this place looks interesting, and lets just say I simple fell in love with the place. West African Cuisine in the middle of the nations capitol. I honestly didn't know what to expect. From upon entry the places was packed on a Monday night. Beautiful people, live band, dancing and people just have a carefree good ole time. The beautiful staff always greeted with a smile and even if they weren't specifically attending to you they made sure to ask if you were okay. T'was a little late so I didn't want to eat heavy so I went for the appetizers i chose the jerk chicken came like little fingerling cubes well seasoned to the bone and the mac n cheese. Their drinks aren't for the light weights I must say but they do make them with love! Hookahs are also available. it also a great idea to call in a reservation you might not be as lucky as I was. read more
Let me say that I am late providing this review. I first dined at Moi Moi for this NYE event and it was absolutely delicious! The event was nice the only con was the DJ wasn't great but the food more than made up for it lol! So today, we went and had brunch at Moi Moi and as expected, delicious. The staff are always pleasant and accommodating. Today I had the steak and eggs and it was delicious. I ordered a side of creamy grits. They were good but maybe just a hair too salty but overall I enjoyed my meal and cocktail, peach sangria. I appreciate a nice chill brunch. Moi Moi is definitely giving grown vibes! I'll be back! One of the most spectacular dining experiences I've ever had. The menu consists of some of the most flavorful combinations you'll find in DC. Soulful, savory and thoughtful are just some of the words that came to mind when describing this outstanding cuisine. I dined for brunch and cannot wait to try their dinner menu during my next visit, which I will gladly drive 2 hours for. The staff was so welcoming and kind. The service was the cherry on top to an absolutely incredible meal. read more

I love the food and vibe of the restaurant! Very tasty and authentic selections to choose from, along with creative drink selections. The staff was very nice and helpful! It is a great date night spot or fun time with friends. I also enjoyed the music and the crowd. The drinks are also very strong and refreshing. I loved the soup and other options I will have to come back to try. The inside is decorated so gorgeous with beautiful African paintings. It is very enchanting when walking to the restroom. Restrooms were clean. I ordered the lobster bisque and stew and truly enjoyed both. My friends were celebrating a birthday and enjoyed the restaurant as well. They ordered the collard greens meal. For vegetarians, they have amazing vegetarian options as well. The food was so authentic, fresh and tasty. read more
Moi Moi was a nice chill spot for some good eats. It's anAfrican restaurant but keep in mind that if you go for brunch, it's not traditional African food. I ordered the Fried Chicken with Lobster Beignets. The plate also came with a side of collard greens. The chicken was amazing. I'm not even the biggest fan of chicken but it was so good! I would eat it again for sure. The greens were pretty tasty. The vinegar definitely adds the perfect amount of tanginess that makes your shoulders dance. The lobster beignets were a little underwhelming but nothing worth complaining about. My friends really enjoyed the shrimp and grits. Overall, I'd recommend you check Moi Moi out. I can't wait to return during the week for the regular menu. read more

First I want to say that they have the best roasted Brussels sprouts I have EVER had and I am not exaggerating. However, this restaurant is severely over priced. The suya was 17 dollars and it was below average in taste, and to add insult to injury it was only 4 Thin slices. As someone who eats suya a lot, I was disappointed. Additionally, I asked for a soda water with my drink (which is usually free at the bar) and they changed me 7 dollars for it. In total I ended up paying 58 dollars for one drink, a soda water, a suya appetizer and a side of Brussels sprouts. Unfortunately, even though I enjoy African cuisines this is not a place I would frequent. read more

This restaurant is INCREDIBLE. Truly my new favorite restaurant in DC. The food here has complex flavors and the protein is cooked to perfection. We had the thieboudienne and it was just delicious. The rice tasted of seafood with a great piece cooked of fish incredible sauces and root vegetables to add a mellow flavor. We also had the duck (in photo) and it was sweet with a great charred top and went beautifully with the butternut squash. It was a flavor combination I have not had with duck before And I loved it. Truly so so good. The drinks were unique and the waitstaff was kind and helped us walk through the menu. I cannot wait to go back again! read more
My partner, who is from Senegal, warned me that this place would probably not be up to our expectations of authentic West African food, but at the recommendation of a friend we thought we would all try it. The locations is right in the heart of DC on K street, which may be why they are commanding the insane prices you find on their menu. My friend and I both ordered Thieboudienne (literally translated means the rice of fish in the Wolof language in Senegal), and my partner had poulet yasa. As you can see from my previous statement, "Thieboudienne" should be fish, but I knew I wasn't going to like the dish when the waitress asked if we wanted fish or chicken. Service was overall attentive and quick, so no critique there, although when she brought my food she thought I ordered the Thieboudienne with chicken (which doesn't even make sense) when in fact I had also ordered the traditional fish version. They did change it - but suspiciously though, as it only took them a few minutes to swap out the chicken for the fish. The Thieboudienne overall was just OK, although the rice was not done in the traditional Senegalese style (was dry and long grain, traditionally the rice should be broken and have more the flavor of the dish/sauce). The other problem is that the fish was fried - the fish is never fried in the real dish. My partner's poulet yassa also looked nothing a traditional poulet yassa, nor according to him really tasted like it either. On top of all this our bill was over $200 including automatic 20% tip they included on the check. I should add, we ordered a bottle of wine as it was a better deal than the overpriced cocktails. If you have never had Senegalese food then you may like Moi Moi (assuming you can stomach the prices), but if you know at all what true West African food should taste like then I encourage you to venture out to Silver Spring for some authentic Senegalese food. I have no idea how this restaurant is going to stay in business at these prices - it's almost hilarious how much they are charging. Overpriced and unauthentic 2/5. read more

We came here to celebrate New Year's and the experience then was a 180 from what we experienced today. To start, the pricing of all the food has gone up quite a bit since last time. With the lack of customers, perhaps they are hoping the few of us who do try to patronize them will pay all the bills. The food quality made me wonder if they got a new chef or if they just don't have or care about any quality control. I ordered the same Jollof dish and could only stomach a bite of the rice, the rest I was unable to eat. The side veggies were large as if the kitchen had no knives or cutlery to slice and make them presentable. I did not complain about the overtly expensive food I didn't eat because I wondered what else could they make that I would like. We got the check and noticed my husband was charged for 2 sprites. When we asked why, our waitress said they don't do free refills. I asked her why didn't she mention that there are no refills when she brought out the second sprite and she said if it was free, she would have mentioned it was free as if it's normal and customary for restaurants to charge per drink . I told her I'm not asking for a whole new meal or for the meal I didn't eat or even attempt to take home to be refunded and she's here arguing about $7 when I could be asking for $40 back. Needless to say we won't be back. We definitely wanted this place to be successful because going to Silver Springs or Bowie for good West African atmosphere and food is not what we want to do all the time. My friend wanted to plan her birthday party here In September based off my recommendation but after today, she's going to have to find another place. read more

In DC for a couple days!! Stumbled upon the Moi Moi Restaurant around the corner from the hotel: Ambiance- great Service - excellent; Idid was very attentive and friendly. Food- A+++ Had the catfish and mango slaw - both just divine!!!! Thanks chef!!!! Will definitely come back!!!! read more
My friends schedule a double date here for 8:45pm. We arrived on time but had to wait to be seated which was 15 -20min wait. The place is cute when you walk in and busy. We decided to order drinks at the bar and it was great drink too. We ordered appetizers, dessert, and entrees. I will say I was expecting more for the jollof since they are Senegalese but everything else tasted great. Can't wait to go back and try other items on the menu. read more

Kathy/Kadiji/Keith They welcome us with great hospitality. The catfish is the best way to start your night off. But the lamb and ox tail are running neck to neck for us. We enjoyed the hake out of ourselves. Will be back a million times more read more
Came here on a Wednesday night. Easy to get a table. Music and decor provided a welcoming vibe. Server (didn't catch their name) was also nice. I opted for the three course meal for $65. Got the oysters (yum), Jollof rice platter (yum), and the peach cobbler (just ok). Also got the spicy Margarita (yum). Food came out slowly, but I would go back! read more
