After watching Iron Chef Legends, I was really excited to try Mokbar. My fiance and I decided to try the location in Midtown which is inside The Hugh food court. It's hidden around the corner, so make sure you walk around to find it. The Hugh is a cute foodie spot with tons of different options and plenty of seating. At Mokbar, we got the Crabby Shrimp and was really disappointed with the portion size. The rice and shrimp portions were ver small for $17. I also thought the quality of food was not up to expectations. Maybe next time, we will try the ramen, but overall slightly disappointed from an Iron Chef restaurant.

Mokbar at Lexington is located in Hugh's food court. There is plenty of eateries lineup in the area. Inside of Hugh is welcoming and cozy. We loved the strings of lights hanging from the ceiling. It is also a nice place to cool down and hang out. This was the place we visited last (7.15) in NYC before heading back to Temecula. The host was nice and informative. We ordered the chicken katsu with rice and the spicy noodles with red paste and chicken. Overall, the meals were fairly good. Although, we felt it was missing some flavors to motivate the appetite.

Had lunch here. The staff is very friendly. We had the pork ramen and vegetable bi bim bap with tofu. It comes with cucumber kim chi so we got a side of cabbage kimchi. Great decision. It added great flavor. $45.67 plus tip.

I was excited to try Ester Choi's food at mokbar after discovering her and her amazing personality on youtube. For weekday lunch, I got the Army "Budae" Ramen which came with bacon, pork belly, tofu, spam, mozzarella cheese in mildly spicy kimchi broth. The noodles and soup was delectable and spicy (but not too spicy). It is a little on the pricey side for lunch, especially for a takeout lunch item, but one I am happy I paid for a delectable fusion dish.

Small joint in a food court setting of Hugh on 54th and Lexington. There is ample seating as part of the food court. Coming to food, it's freshly prepared in a see thru open kitchen. Always tastes flavorful and fresh with authentic korean spices. The service is prompt and friendly. Gets pretty crowded during lunch time. Good joint for regular weekday lunch ...

I was so excited to eat at Chef Esther Choi's restaurant only to find a small bar inside a dining hall where our food came in takeout containers. Ordered the army budae stew ramen. Portion is smaller than I expected. Flavor was packed, tart, and heavy. More dense than other army stews I've had. The soup could use more liquid. Overall, quality food, but too heavy and small portion.

This is the best restaurant in the Hugh. The pork belly buns with cucumber were so delicious and fatty in the best way. I also tried their crabby shrimp with purple rice and it was one of the best bowls I've ever had. The service was fast and efficient, and the staff was friendly and attentive. Will definitely come back!!!

Great after work hang out food hall! Multiple food stalls including Mokbar. You get take out containers even when you're eating in. I tried the kimchi ramen and the broth was spicy and delicious! The poached egg (+$2) is exactly as advertised. Not marinated like other ramen places so I was a bit disappointed at that. The bowl was also a bit too small to fill me up :p We also tried the veggie dumplings which I found the skin to be a bit too chewy. Maybe we waited too long that the crisp went away?

    Classic ramen and Ho cake

Impressed but not necessarily my type of food. Lots of improvement if they position themselves to be a fast casual at the Hugh. I'm sure my experience will be better if I went to their sit down location. I've seen this place pop-up multiple times as I look for food options in the area. I keep rejecting it because I was never a Korean food person. I finally tried it today when my brother recommended it. I ordered the classic ramen and Ho cake. I was actually torn between which ramen to get and went with the classic to have the "fairest" impression. For apps, I almost wanted to get both the Ho cake and fried chicken but settled for the more unique one. Order and preparation was speedy. Unfortunately the lid of the broth was loose and soup spilled as I carried the food home. It was quite messy considering the thickness and fattiness of the broth. At least it didn't spill so much my bag started dripping or falling apart. I wouldn't have known about its security since the bag was stapled shut on top. Broth itself was surprising. It's very red-orange in color but does not taste spicy at all. It has the tanginess from kimchi but also richness of pork broth. It's just rich. You don't feel the fattiness oiliness. I did not expect this just from looking at it. By the time I got home the broth was lukewarm and figured I need to reheat it. After I poured the broth onto the bowl of noodles with toppings, it wasn't hot enough to cook the ramen, so I microwaved the whole bowl more. I'm glad to see that the ramen was undercooked to avoid it being mushy as this is a takeout option. The problem is thinking about how inconvenient this is for someone eating this anywhere but home. For ppl eating in the Hugh, they should offer a dine-in option with the ramen fully cooked through and assembled. The quantity of broth barely covers the items in the bowl. I know it's less than usual because some of mine got spilled, but this is still not enough for the ingredients to swim in. The thickness of the broth makes sense for them to not give an ocean amount. Otherwise it'll be too heavy. Like what I mentioned about the noodles being partially cooked, you still need that quantity of heat to cook the ramen through. Ramen is wavy. I couldn't gather particular flavors from it as the pickled toppings and rich broth overtook it. It's rectangular. Texture was alright. I personally like springier eggier ramen. At least the noodles didn't stick to each other as it cooled. It did have a problem of being tangled up. The shallow sides of the bowl meant broth splattered all over the place at every attempt to pickup noodles. This is an issue with many soup noodles but it's still something that needs to be addressed and solved. Toppings. The braised pork was a hearty chunk that reminded me of Chinese cuisine. Unfortunately I found it a bit dry. I didn't really like the other toppings as they were all pickled (told you I'm not a Korean food person). I only liked the mushrooms. I honestly found the toppings to be slightly disturbing me from enjoying the noodles and broth. At the same time the amount of toppings they give makes this bowl more than just noodles. The toppings are significant enough that every bite has a bunch. It's satisfying if only the tastes didn't bother me. Ho cake I'm impressed it wasn't oily and soggy by the time I ate it. That only happened hours later. The filling reminds me of dim sum roast pork bun but shredded. I like the ratio of skin to filling and thickness to achieve that balance. The skin is crunchy on the outside yet chewy and soft on the inside. Some parts were drier and harder but it was tolerable once you dip the kimchi pear sauce. Pear sweetness or juiciness isn't apparent in the sauce but it balances the acidity of kimchi. For some reason I'm getting Sriacha vibes. The sauce helps cut through the thick carbs of the Ho cake and adds moisture. I wouldn't say I like this flavor but it definitely complements the Ho cake. The Ho cake looks small when they cut it into two halves but it's actually quite hearty. I knew I couldn't eat the other half when I still had the whole ramen to go through. It seems disappointing at first to only get one bun/cake item but at the same time it's quite filling. I think I'd still "prefer" the ramen for the variety and surprise despite the messiness and personal dislike of certain items. I don't expect coming again but I appreciate my experience.

Their menu leans into fusion dishes with a nod to some of the classic home-style classics. Everything is presented with a refined, elevated touch. Here's what we ordered: ~ Tako Wasabi - 5/5 stars A fiery delight. This appetizer feartures chopped raw octopus marinated in wasabi. It has a lively zest from the wasabi and is topped with tobiko, which adds a pleasant contrast in texture. ~ Honey Makgeolli - 4/5 stars A traditional fermented Korean beverage that is light and pairs brilliantly with your meal. It is a cloudy alcholoic drink served in a metal teapot, and surprisingly, there is much more in that teapot than you would expect. It easily provides six to eight generous pours. The flavor is subtly sweet with a pleasant tang. ~ Temaki Set - 4/5 stars You can order a set of three by choosing from selections 1-17, or you can order a la carte at the listed prices. Some of the temaki stood out more than others. Our two sets included marinated salmon, bluefin tuna, spicy yellowtail, spicy bluefin, and two dynamite temaki. ~ Spicky Pork Ssam Set - 5/5 stars Truly another standout entree that even surpassed my beloved grilled BBQ bossam. You received a generous basket of assorte greens, including romaine, kale, perilla leaves, dandelion leaves, nappa cabbage, and more. It is well worth the price and makes for a fun, interactive dining experience with your family and friends. There is also various banchan offered and this time, they were beyond kind enough to offer refills. The last time we were here, we ordered just as much food and they stated they normally did not offer refills, which I thought was very odd. We walked into a stylish but relaxed space that feels suited for both casual dinners and a night out with friends, with an atmosphere that balances energy and comfort well. The room gets lively when it fills up, but the noise level adds to the experience rather than detracting from it, making it feel like a place built for sharing and conversation. The food is where Hojokban stands out. The complimentary banchan sets the tone for the meal with flavorful sides that add variety before the main dishes arrive, each one thoughtfully prepared and offering a different texture or flavor profile. The gomtang soup is one of the more comforting options, bringing together tender meat, a rich broth, and classic Korean flavors in a way that feels hearty without being overly heavy. The galbi dishes are also a highlight, with the meat cooked well and carrying the sweet and savory balance that makes Korean-style grilled beef so enjoyable. The portions are generous, and the quality of the ingredients is noticeable across the board. The menu has several unique dishes worth exploring. The truffle potato pancake is one of the more memorable items, combining a familiar Korean staple with a richer, modern twist that adds depth without losing the essence of the original. The perilla oil noodles are another standout, offering a lighter but still flavorful option with a distinct nutty aroma that lingers on the palate. The beef tartare adds a more refined element to the meal, fresh and well seasoned, while dishes like the ramyun fried rice bring a fun comfort food element with bold, savory flavors. Together, the menu covers enough ground that you can build a meal around both familiar favorites and more creative choices. Service is friendly and the overall experience feels welcoming rather than overly formal. The staff are attentive without hovering, and they handle the busy flow of the restaurant with a pace that keeps the meal moving without feeling rushed. The menu is designed for sharing, and the portions make it easy to order several dishes across the table, allowing you to try more of what the kitchen has to offer. The lively atmosphere adds to the meal, making it a good fit for group dinners where the energy of the room matches the pace of the food. Hojokban does a good job blending traditional Korean flavors with a more modern dining experience. It is a place where you can come for familiar comfort food while still finding dishes that feel creative and different. If you enjoy Korean cuisine and want a restaurant with a little more personality, this is a spot worth checking out. It delivers a meal that feels both familiar and fresh, striking a balance that makes it easy to return to and explore more of the menu.
