This place is easy to miss if you're passing by the area -- the windows/doors are outfitted in this weird plastic pattern that makes it look like the place is under construction. However, when you get through the doors, you're transported into a cute cottage that reminded me of the small eateries I visited in Chisinau. It was a Friday afternoon and there were barely any people here, despite the beautiful setting and the party room in the back. Service was good, and each table had a fancy air about it -- metal serving platforms that made you feel grand. My dining partner and I went with lunch specials. I got the sour cream tripe soup, while he got a salad that sort of resembled cobb. The tripe soup was not for me -- a bit bland/flavourless, but I also don't have a standard of metric to judge it against (but I DO love tripe). However, the salad my partner got was plentiful and deliciously fresh. For entrees, I got the mititei which reminded of the ones from the open street markets. It was pretty good, but didn't feel as light as the ones I remember (probably needed more baking soda). I also had a house red wine, hoping it would transport me back mentally to Milestii Mici, but sadly this went down fine but then had an odd aftertaste like cotton pads... All in all, the experience was a fine one and the food was plentiful (I'm still eating leftovers). I'll be coming back to try some other things, but now I have a Moldovan restaurant go-to! read more

I'm so so happy to have ordered again from here after a false news notice some years ago that it was closing. I'd ordered sooner, but only finally got my act together and did it today and boy am I going to be happy for DAYS. I ordered the #1 "Mamaliga Trapeza / House Special With Pork Stew" which is polenta (a Romanian corn meal) with feta, pork stew chunks seasoned thoroughly, sour cream, a fried egg with a just soft middle, copious generous baked beef chunks, and special seasoning atop it all. It's truly delicious. There as no pork stew or pork for that matter, but no matter, it was awesome. I also ordered a 2nd order of the same, but with more mamaliga (should've chosen something else for diversity, my fault), a side of coffee (I've not had coffee out for years and so just wanted it; it was so emotionally relieving), and taranesc (tomatoes, cucumbers, raw onions, red sweet bell peppers, cut romaine lettuce, feta cheese, olive oil dressing). Everything was again delicious with superbly fresh quality of ingredients which is hard now-a-days with less turnover and more economic pressures. Loved it all! I also ordered a side of sarmale, a Romanian dish of ground pork, sauerkraut, tomatoes, and dill in a cabbage wrap with delicious seasoning and steamed just right. It was a full, beyond full, meal even at just 6 pieces since each piece is sssooo so so generous, just like the aforementioned beef baked chunks. Was recently here for a dinner and I am not Moldavian but have had some really good Moldovian food in the past and home made. This place and many of the people agreed the food was some of the most plain, flavorless food we have had in a while from any cuisine . I will not even waste my money at this place ever again. We tried 3 kabobs only one was good enough to keep eating . Two fish kabobs and only was edible but lacked flavor. The bad part about this that we were all so hungry but the only things we kept eating we the pickled items and Caesar salad . Entertaining was pretty bad as well but not Restaurants fault at all just to be clear . Service was hit or miss . Upon Sitting down we were given 3 plates we kept reusing the top one until about 2 plus hours into the party they decided to come around and change out our plates . I went to one of those birthday banquets where the food just keeps coming and coming and everything was SO GOOD. The cold salads were such a great way to start the meal, the all the grilled meat was absolutely amazing and you think you're too full for dessert but then you try that sour cherry blintz and you just can't stop. 100% would come back here again. read more

My worst experience ever!!!! I had my best friend coming from Washington DC especially for Moldovan food, I thought to take her to this place in Brooklyn because I've been going there for few years now and I really liked the food. Well, the service is bad and the stuff is very rude but I didn't really care because I'm going there for food not for the stuff. I'm a Moldovan girl and I always thought our people are the most hospitable but it appeared to be wrong . The manager there is so snobby that he can't even "see where he walks". I called the Restaurant around 8PM and I asked the girl , probably she was the hostess what time they close and they said 10pm. Me and my friend we were there at 9:25 and they literally kicked us out with no respect. I myself work as a manager of a Restaurant and I know what that means and I can tell you they are the worst Restaurant stuff I've ever experienced. Today when I wanted to get a delivery from them I was contacted by Eat24 telling me that the Restaurant doesn't want to deliver food to my home!!! This is pathetic and you cannot call this as a "great customer service" Shame on these kind of Restaurants!!!!! read more

Came here once for a dinner. This was the only visit I will ever do. Place looks semi-decent, although I was very surprised that the door is right in the middle of the storefront. Did not had a chance to go to the restroom myself but heard it was not very good. I ordered lamb kebab and wanted to have grilled vegetables as a side, and this is totally possible according to the menu; furthermore serving guy did take an order in the way I wanted and went downstairs: yes, kitchen is in the basement and every dish has to be carried up by hand. About 10 minutes later my order comes out, I'm very surprised as I expect a bit longer cooking time for kebab. First shock: my dish came with what looked like their home made fries covered in garlic. Second shock: service guy did not even bothered to explain it and simply mentioned that this is how kitchen cooks my dish. Finally, meat was not of the proper serving temperature: everyone who has had kebab in their lifetime would expect either boiling-hot or very hot temperature of the dish that presumably just came off the grill. Not the case: meat was luke-warm and cold inside. Potatoes were extremely hot. I'm 100% positive that dish was not cooked to order but rather pre-made and then microwaved. My brother did not wanted to order a full meal and decided to get tuna tatake. Big mistake. It came out in 2 minutes and did not even looked fresh, but he ended up eating more than half before deciding that it is right on the edge of being eatable. The next day he spent sitting on a toilet and drinking tequila, all while cursing at Moldova. Finally my other friend ordered salmon with veggies. And that dish did take 30+ minutes to prepare and looked good. I tasted it and restaurant would have had a 3 or 4 if both dishes from above were of the same quality. My outtake is that restaurant is not prepared to handle heavy dinner rush and uses plenty of pre-prepared goods. It's all right to do this with certain dishes, but totally not cool when it comes to others. I do not see a single reason to come back. read more

Ordered the lunch special with 30 min to spare, allowing for a soup/salad and an entree. The veal soup, ciorba de vita cu fasole, was decent in taste, though the cubes of meat were slightly too dry for me. There were also a plethora of kidney beans and a few pieces of well cooked potatoes. There was a faint spiciness with reasonable saltiness. I also ordered a hot appetizer, which was served prior to my entree. I the coltunasi fat frumos, which were served in a pot with an assortment of dumplings filled with either cheese, potatoes, or pork. Interestingly, they came in varying shapes and sizes; more circular disk-shaped dumplings contained while more crescent shaped ones had the other two fillings. The pork dumplings tasted best, but overall they were great, whetting my appetite. Sour cream on the side complemented them fairly. My entree was the mămăligă house special. It was a medley of items. Firstly, there were three spheres of mămăligă, or a type of corn porridge. These were softer in consistency than a tamale and about as sticky as a zongzi. Though tasteless, the mămăligă balanced the saltiness of the cheese crumbles and pork. The pork was excellent and very tasty, and went well with the sour cream. The scrambled eggs were unassuming, but seemed to work well in conjunction with everything else. Decor had a classy feel with the appearance of the tables and utensils. There were various tapestries adorning the wall and a clock with the Moldovan flag in the background. Service was friendly, with helpful staff when I asked help for dish recommendations. In retrospect, I would've been well fed only with the entree, but I wanted to try an appetizer as well. Great food; would go back to try more. read more

What an experience. We tried Moldovan food for the first time and we got quite the spread. Very fun experience and the portions were HUGE. The salad was basic but refreshing, the dumplings were also a bit bland. The placinte with potato was good. It could be better with maybe accompanied by a side sauce. The stuffed grape leaves w meat filling was a lovely surprise. They are LARGE and full of flavor. The best part for sure were the main courses. Very elegant restaurant; intriguing menu, great culinary execution. Exotic in the sense that few New Yorkers would probably be able to point to Moldova on a map. It would be a good "date place" were it not for the fact that the restaurant has been criminally empty the three times I've been there. On one hand, it's in a bad location -- there's not much foot traffic here, but on the other hand, there's quite a few similar (elegant; somewhat exotic, great food) places nearby... maybe that's problem. I hope not, because I'd like to see this place thrive. Loved the waitress. The owner was super friendly (although I could do without the "Democrats suck" verbiage). There's really nothing not to love about this restaurant. Coltunasi Făt-Frumos: B+ Coltunasi are dumplings; Moldovan pierogi. Făt-Frumos is a knight-hero in Romanian folklore; something like a Romanian Prince Charming (Romania is next door to Moldova). The dumplings come in an earthen ceramic pot with sour cream on the side. Somewhat bland; I would've liked the meat filling to stand out more, and I'm not sure being lumped in a bowl is the best presentation for the dish, but who doesn't love dumplings of any sort? Costita: A- A nicely grilled pork chop. Excellent flavorings, and obviously grilled. My kids absolutely loved it. The only small criticism is that it was slightly overdone in places. A more juicy, more fatty cut of meat would've been better. Even so, this is a solid offering. Pirjoale ca la Tiraspol: A+ My favorite dish here. I'm not a fan of chicken breast; it's usually far too dry for me, and further more, I'm not a huge fan of gerkin pickles. However, this was heavenly. Superb. The meat was juicy and soft. The stuffed cheese / pickle was just ... phenomenal. For me, this is the best dish on the menu. Skirt Steak Salad: A Heavenly salad. The steak itself was clearly an A+: grilled and tasty (it was either skirt or hangar steak, both of which are very tasty cuts). The salad was terrific. Sarmale ca la Mama: A Essentially "finger sized" stuffed cabbage. Or maybe they can be described as dumplings with cabbage instead of dough. In a word, scrumptious. The cabbage and meat were soft enough to be cuttable with just a fork. Juicy, tender, nicely seasoned. Definitely an "A" dish. Jumari (fried pork belly): C- Tasteless with bad texture. I've never had flavorless pork belly... it's basically bacon meat, right? How in the WORLD can it be flavorless? But moreover, it's obviously fried but dry and rubbery which tells me that it was fried previously but warmed (over warmed) in a microwave oven. I found it to be inedible. When we got back from the restaurant I literally threw this away. I'm even wondering if it were pork belly to begin with. Ursuleti: Ordered by our group but I didn't eat it. New owner! Valerik is really turning this place around, from serious kitchen renovations to his signature Napoleon recipe (like baklava layered with custard!) The compote is excellent, order a pitcher (or three) for your table. The borsht unfortunately cannot be made vegetarian, but enough other dishes can be modified. Mostly what they do best is fish. There's a lovely outdoor courtyard in the back, and they can take large groups for parties. Sometimes you might be lucky enough to hear live music! Inside there's a TV but luckily the sound is off. The food is simple, comforting, and has a homemade feel. Definitely food for when you're in need of a cozy night-in. That said, I dined-in, and service is slooooooooooow. We ordered some appetizers and that came out in a decent amount of time, but there was a long gap between receiving our starters and entrees. We then waited a long time before we got our server's attention to ask for the check and waited some more for the server to return our bill for signing. They also tacked on a 10% tip without informing us, which I've always found sneaky and dishonest as it is a way to trick customers into paying more in gratuities. The family was here recently after a sad, though not morbid, Sunday gathering. We usually go to Cafe Paris on Brighton Beach for such occasions, but decided to break the streak. Well familiar with Brooklyn Russian restaurants, I assumed that "Moldova" was just a token name and that the food would be standard issue "Russian." I was only half-right, because, lo and behold, they had mămăligă , which has been on my to-try list for quite some time! It's basically the Romanian/Moldovan polenta--porridge made from yellow cornmeal. I went all the way and got the house special version, a gargantuan platter with no less than three mămăligă mounds, feta cheese, meat stew, sour cream, and scrambled eggs. Holy cow...I had enough food left over for two lunches. The rest of the food was fine, and we BYOB, obviously. Otherwise, Moldova practices the usual shtick, with gaudy designs, servers dressed in traditional garb, wall decorations and rugs (of dubious traditionality if you ask me, but I'm not an art historian). There's a backroom for bigger Russian ragers, such as the one that was starting up that Sunday evening. Loud music inexplicably played for an empty room when we first walked in, though they had the wits to shut that down later. My gf got the full experience of a Soviet-American restaurant courtesy of the larger "party" next to us (by the looks of it, and all the black attire, also of a somber nature). There was the guy with the glitter on the back of his black shirt, the middle-aged man with an impossibly lush coiffure, and old ladies in large fur hats with all the trimmings. The host utilized a wall-mounted flat screen TV to play a video of a festive occasion, presumably the deceased in their happier days. No one paid attention, which is just about right. read more

I can't say that I know what Moldavian food is or is not but I can tell you that whoever is in the kitchen is doing a great job. My friend said that the food is basically "Soviet nostalgic". We had a kind of avocado and fish roe crudo that was served with blini stuffed with smoked salmon and farmer's cheese. It was a meal in itself. I also had the restaurant's take on stuffed cabbage which was probably the best version of it I've ever tasted and far surpassed my family's recipe (from nearby Romania).
