I have recently dined here for breakfast and lunch. For breakfast I ordered My Favorite Mix which was a meat (my choice ham) and scrambled egg combination that came with hash browns and two biscuits and gravy. It was a lot of food for about $7. This is a counter service restaurant and the food was ready in less than 10 minutes. It all tasted good and was very filling. I would order it again (3.5). For lunch, they offer a buffet line like Luby's with different meat and veggies offered each day. On my day, I first thought about the chicken pot pie but it looked rather dry sitting there in the pan so instead I asked for Mexican tilapia with 2 veggies for about $10.50. It also came with some cornbread. This meal was just ok (3) in taste. The black eye peas and cheese broccoli along with the fish were acceptable but not tasty enough to make me want to hurry back. The interior of this restaurant has a lot of decor including pictures of people ranging from Sinatra to KISS to John Wayne giving it a folksy feel. They also have their own private parking lot. I was pretty disappointed with my lunch. I came specifically for the chicken and dumplings, when I saw them on the serving line, I was pretty sure they would not live up to expectations. First of all, you only get a fairly small bowl for your $15. I was hoping for a big hearty sized meal, but that wasn't what I got. The broth wasn't very thick, more soup-like. There were a few chunks of chicken, but mostly is was strings of chicken meat. The dumplings weren't bad, but they also weren't those nice doughy strips of dumpling that I like. They were yellow balls of dough. But like I said, they were okay. For my sides I got the kernel corn, which was way overcooked. I'm not sure how you overcook corn out of a can, but they did. And I got mashed potatoes and brown gravy, which was fine. I got a huge hunk of cornbread which I was excited about, but it didn't have much flavor and they only gave me one pad of butter. We all have a different algorithm for rating a restaurant. I try to balance decor, service, quality, ingenuity, flavor, and price. Mom's is a cafeteria-style restaurant with a lot of "kitsch." They want to be a country restaurant and, well, they succeed... if not with the hint that they're being deliberate about trying to do that. It's the same way that Austin-themed places emulate/imitate Austin. So, you grab a tray, choose a dish (there are only a few options), and pick some sides. I had the jambalaya with rice (a bit sweeter than I like), spinach and okra. At the end of the counter is Mom or her mom. They're friendly folks. After you pay, there's a buffet of onions, peppers, cornbread, jalapeno cornbread, and rolls (eat as much as you'd like). So, I doused the jambalaya with hot sauces and jalapenos... and it was pretty darned good. You know, I enjoyed my meal. I wasn't blown-away by it being "really good..." but at $7-$8 for an entree and two sides, it's a pretty good deal. They give you Texas-sized portions. They'll help you fill-out that bench seat in your pick-em-up truck. So, overall, although they excelled at nothing, they did a good job of providing a decent meal at a fair price. They're friendly and the whole experience went-off without a hitch. It's close to my job so I eat here quite often. My favorite thing about this place is the customer service. They are nice. Especially if you come often and they start to recognize you. I appreciate that. First off It's fast. You can get your food right away because there's always a selection of cooked food to choose from immediately. The prices are reasonable. Secondly, there is so much variety. There is something different every day that you can choose from the steam table or you can get made to order cheeseburgers, sandwiches, gyros, deli sandwiches, baked potatoes, salads, etc. Granted I have not loved every item I have eaten here (i.e. I usually avoid the meatloaf) but I have learned my favorites and stick with those. My recommendations are: Baked Greek chicken, baked tilapia. At mom's, I walk in, choose from several different options of home-cooked meals at a Luby's style setup that I cannot get at my regular spot. Black-eyed peas? Check!! Red beans and rice with sausage with an ultra-thick slice of fresh corn-bread? Check! Chicken'n'dumplings? CHECK! LOVE THESE OPTIONS!!! and the list goes on!! What's this I'm hearing while I set at a CLEAN table WITHOUT having a layer of dried up maple syrup on it that was not adequately wiped up by the busser? I hear golden oldies! Not liberal nonsense and politics!! I hear the Beatles, the carpenters, mamas and papas, temptations, Elvis, CASH!!! It's the perfect volume, low-key, calm and quiet! I do believe Mom's does have the music off with TV volumes at a reasonable level during their breakfast hours until about 1030. But with that said, it's just morning news, tolerable and somewhat informative. Fair enough. Needless to say, the atmosphere is relaxing and laid back with old nostalgic Houston pictures all over the wall and really not a single table in the joint with a bad location. This place is fantastic! They keep it clean and obviously take pride in making comfortable food for you to enjoy in a comfortable environment. Some of the best French toast I've had hands down I am stuffed and couldn't make it past French toast number 3 and I'm eating for two it was so delicious my husband enjoyed his veggie omelet he thought they were a bit heavy on the black olives but ate it in less than 5 minutes. Finally tried Mom's and I must say I was impressed. The catfish was some of the best I've had in a very long time. I look down the line and fell in love.....butter beans! Wow those were excellent.
