My husband and I live close by but will come here very often for dinner or Saturday morning brunch. I love the ambiance of this restaurant and the great service! Food is very descent but not sure if it changes throughout the season or over the time this restaurant exists. Overall, I recommend anyone to try this place even just for the experience. An absolutely spectacular dining experience. My wife and I came last night to celebrate Valentine's Day. We made reservations two weeks prior ( FYI, reservations are required). Located in a beautiful brownstone mid rise residential building, this quaint French restaurant exudes an ambience of a time gone by. We started off with the escargot bathed in an incredible parsley butter garlic sauce and toasted French baguette. My wife ordered the trout almondine and I ordered the hanger steak in Bordeaux sauce with steak frites and a side of mushrooms. The explosion of rich flavor on our taste buds left us both extremely happy. We finished with a crème brûlée and a raspberry sorbet for desert. My husband and I had a wonderful dinner here. Our waitress Amanda M was a ray of sunshine and made lots of helpful suggestions. Her attitude was so sunny and positive, what a breath of fresh air! We enjoyed steak au poivre and the salmon. Steak was cooked perfectly medium rare and juicy, and the sauce was delicious. The frites were okay. One of the finest meals ever! The trout almandine was artfully prepared and was delicious. The salmon was a work of art on a place and was also perfectly prepared and delicious. We didn't make a reservation on Mother's Day but the host at Min Ami Gabi kindly took us in and we were seated almost immediately. Our cozy table in the corner provided us with an opportunity for a pleasant conversation away from the hustle of the main floor. The service was great. After my drink turned out to be a straight up gin with a slice of lemon instead of the Parisien cocktail I ordered, the waitress offered other options. The fried chicken with mashed potatoes and mushrooms was delicious. Too bad I didn't ordered that and was only stealing pieces from my husband . My steamed mussels were just average, but there were a lot of them . I usually enjoy the wine broth that comes with the dish , but this time it was too bland to be bothered with. My wife and I stopped at Mon Ami Gabi a couple Sundays ago for brunch on the way to the beach. It was a beautiful day so we sat outside in their sunken patio section. Very mediocre food! Nothing was bad about the food but to be honest I'm disappointed with mere "just ok" food. The place has a very old school feel to it with a menu to match that theory. There are some "classic dishes" but I feel like they could benefit from some modern concepts or flavors. I got my daughter the chocolate waffle from the kids menu but I'd recommend parents to be aware because this will produce a sugar high. Wow, as soon as you walk into Mon Ami Gabi you instantly sense that you are in a high-end restaurant. The restaurant is tucked right inside the Belsen Stratford Apartment building, I went with a group of friends on a Friday evening for dinner. Each of us ordered different dishes so we could try everything else, but what we were really curious about were the escargot and the skate wing. The escargot was super delicious, it was covered in this garlic buttery sauce that tasted like pesto. After we polished off the escargot, we actually used the sauce it came in as a dipping sauce for our bread. A skate wing is the wing of a stingray. I've never eaten stingray before so I didn't know what to expect. But as soon as I put a piece in my mouth and tasted that tender piece of meat I was blown away. It is hard to believe that this dish came from an animal that looks like it's made purely out of cartilage. Highly recommend! Can't tell ya which is better, it's a coin toss. Escargot and salad were solid appetizers, but if you're not starving, just the steak frites will do. We came this past weekend for the first time, so we wanted to try some of the more popular items to get a sense of what this place was about. We started with the French Onion soup which I highly recommend. We split an order into 2 cups and it was more than enough. We also got the escargots and baked goat cheese to start. I usually like escargots, but I actually didn't think this one was to die for. The baked goat cheese was also just ok. They bought a baguette to the table to share and this was terrific. With a little butter and a dip that they brought, it was great. For the entrees, we got the Steak Bordelaise, the Duck Confit (from the app menu), and the Trout Almondine. WOW. All 3 of these were terrific. I have never had Trout Almondine, but it was nice a buttery, with a hint of citrus and almond. Highly recomend. The Steak Bordelaise was perfect. Fries were crunchy and by the end, soaked up the terrific rich bordelaise sauce. And the duck texture was crunchy, and served with a sweet cabbage. Mon Ami Gabi was quite a treat. It's located inside a residential building, so that might throw you if you're looking for a restaurant in its own building. The place is quite small and dimly lit. I wouldn't say it's a romantic atmosphere because it's a little too loud, but it had a nice ambiance. We began our meal with their complimentary warm baguette and butter. They also served us a weird trapezoid of shredded carrots. The French Onion Soup was good. I feel like that's a hard dish to screw up. I ordered the 12 oz. NY strip steak and frites. I appreciate that my server allowed me to sample both the bordelaise and bearnaise sauces on the side. The steak was good. The frites were excellent. We passed on dessert, but we did enjoy a bottle of the Louis Latour Bourgogne Gamay wine. It's a very light red. I'm normally a pinot noir guy, but my lady wanted something light. This fit the bill. Delicious! Came by here the other night for dinner with a friend visiting from out of town. Our goal: STEAK FRITES. I went for the Classique Steak Frites cooked medium. It was cooked to perfection and served with a generous dose of green butter to lather it up for every bite. Fries also cooked to perfection as well. Overall a well executed classic steak frites dish! Prior to being seated we hit the bar for a round of cocktails. I opted for the bourbon symphony which is a concoxion consisting of calvados, vourvon, cointreau, and lemon. Finally got around to it. My fiancé surprised me with a dinner for our 2 year anniversary. He's the best! I was so excited! Our waiter was incredibly kind and helpful! Staff was on top of everything. We started off with a caesar salad which they split for us. Then we ordered their atlantic salmon which again, they kindly split for us. The salmon was delicious! A perfect amount for a light, but filling dinner! They surprised us with a profiteroles topped with a candle knowing that we were celebrating! We also ordered the creme brûlée which was delicious! It's next to Lincoln Park Zoo that's a big plus. They have in my humble opinion the best Escargot in Chicago . The chicken liver mouse pate for $10 is not a bad deal. The baguette is amazing!! About a month before going to Mon Ami Gabi, I was actually in Paris for a few days, so that may have affected my experience...overall, for the price of plates here, I thought it was really just okay. I felt like it was trying very very hard to be a French cafe, and while the interior and the ambiance hits it on the head, I didn't think the food was all that great - again, for the price. It's incredibly expensive and I didn't think the food was all that amazing...except the bread - that bread is worth every penny! Maybe I'd need to try something with meat to understand the appeal here, but I had far better meals in Paris for half the cost. We started with the pate...which was excellent, very nice terrine and a copious serving. It was more than enough for two people. For my entree, I ordered the special, which was a 14 oz ribeye steak. Now, I didn't quite know what to expect here since Mon Ami is not a steak house, but damn I was glad I ordered this dish. The steak was so tender it was incredible and very, very well seasoned. A high quality cut of steak and prepared rare - precisely to my request. The red tomatoes were also good, but I was in heaven with this steak. Overall, we really enjoyed Mon Ami Gabi. We visited Mon Ami Gabi for Sunday brunch with a reservation at 1 pm. Granted the weather wasn't the best, but restaurant was about half full when we arrived. The hostess was really nice and helped us change our reservation to 2 people even though we had made it for more people. The food: - My friend started with a mimosa, and I started with a hot chocolate. I thought the mimosa was overpriced for what it was, but given the restaurant was located inside the Belden Stratford - fine. The hot chocolate was not good. It was probably an 8 oz cup with half of it being foam. It tasted like it came out of a packet and it wasn't even mixed well, nowhere as rich as the hot chocolate that you would get from a place like Eataly - The baguette, butter and jam were on point. The restaurant gives you a whole baguette in a paper bag and it's perfect for sharing - I ordered the Beef Bourguignon Eggs Benedict and my friend ordered the Duck Confit & Brussels Sprouts. Perhaps I should have ordered something I knew I would like, but the Beef Bourguignon Eggs Benedict was just okay. It came on two halves of an English muffin, and two poached eggs. The English muffin was soggy from the sauce, and I thought the bourguignon sauce was say too salty. I maybe saw two small pieces of beef and some mushrooms. The egg was good but how do you mess up a poached egg. - My friend's Duck Confit looked delicious - it came withe one duck leg, hash browns, and two sunny-side up eggs. The service: - Small complaint, but the waiter didn't come up and clean up the breadcrumbs after we had our baguette. (he eventually did it just before giving us the bill) When they give you a whole loaf, it's really hard to cut it off without having everyone's hands all over it. But when we arrived last night, we were told that the reason our 2 tables couldn't be near each other was because they didn't want the 2 tables conversing and making noise, thus disturbing the other diners! Now in the Covid-19 era - it has changed and not for the better :( The food quality has gone way down and they nickel and dime you. Now they charge you for a baguette and the carrot salad which used to be complimentary. The French onion soup had very little onion and way too much bread The Caesar salad was way too lemony. The steak frites bordelaise, the steak was good but there was hardly any bordelaise sauce. I asked for more sauce - they brought out more and then charged me for it. The frites were extremely salty. I didn't even take pics of food it was so not appetizing. Our server was great but wine..... ugh. Food.... ugh french onion soup was so gloppy w cheese it was hard to stomache. Everything was bland. Best thing was baguette. read more
