Wait, new favorite Italian restaurant in Chicago???? This place has been on my list for a while as a classic red sauce joint with a ton of locals and I brought my family here for our first family fun day. It was the perfect choice in every way. First of all the interior feels like your sharing space with Frank Sinatra- It is so homie and classic Italian. The wait staff has worked there for 20 years and everyone is your best friend. Genuinely we started talking to one of the owners and then got a list of 15 restaurants from him to go visit in Rome, Free limoncello shots, and cannolis. It's one of those places where you feel at home right away. Now getting onto the food- free bread and they keep it coming with olive oil and Parm- love! House salad, minestrone and pastatino very good- would recommend the minestrone. I split the chicken Vesuvio and the carbonara with my mom. The carbonara was by far the best that I've ever had in my entire life. It was so creamy and the noodles were clearly homemade- It was immaculate. I will genuinely think about this pasta for a long time. For dessert, we split the Affrogato and lemon poundcake- Both excellent and such a highlight to the meal. This is such a lovely space for friends and family. The ambiance is welcoming, cozy, but still elegant if you're seated in the main dining room. The staff is kind and very accommodating. We ordered several dishes but the black linguine definitely stole the show. I was slightly disappointed in the bruschetta and the lobster ravioli, but would still recommend. A cozy supper clubs meets Italian comfort food... and bam! Mart Anthony's enters the scene. Classic Italian dishes served just outside downtown. We ordered the chicken parmigiana entree and my mom ordered the meat sauce lasagna. Chicken parmigiana was so-so. The chicken was a smaller sized cutlet, definitely downsized from years past. And then they fill the remainder of the giant plate with bland penne noodles and mediocre red sauce. Not worth the $25 sticker price. The lasagna was beyond salty. Did the cap fall off the salt shaker? Just wow. Almost inedible. The ambiance and service is truly my favorite. The staff is so attentive and the space makes you feel like you're in a throwback. My husband and I usually stay in for New Year's Eve but we like to order takeout since we don't intend on spending the night cooking. We'd much rather enjoy the evening and leave the cooking to the professionals. This year we wanted Italian food and after checking out a few places, we decided on Mart Anthony's because I was looking for a specific dish. I wanted to try Braciole and most Yelp reviews pointed towards Mart Anthony's for the best braciole in town. I placed an order to go and with it we also picked up a side of meatballs. After nearly an hour ride home, I unpacked the goods and we chowed down for dinner. The food was super delicious! The meat was tender and the tomato sauce was light and flavorful for both the Braciole and Meatballs. The pasta was tender. Overall it was an outstanding meal which we enjoyed over red wine while watching the preshow to the NYE count down. Given the wonderful meal, I would love to return in the warmer months and try the food along with the service onsite. Parking is a little difficult in the area since it is within the loop. Persistence pays while on the hunt for parking but with food this good it is worth the drive. read more

Excellent meal! Our family came after a night downtown and the place was all decorated for Christmas. The service was excellent and the food was even better. I started with an old fashion, which was made perfectly. Some bruchetta and oysters for appetizers and everyone's main meal was excellent. I had the lobster ravioli which was delicious. Came here for dessert and drinks on a Saturday evening and had a lovely time. We sat at the bar. The bartender, a woman whose name I wish I remembered, was so pleasant and gave us great service. I had the olive oil cake, and we all enjoyed it very much. It went perfectly with a cup of decaf. Then I had a spicy mocktail margarita. I was not impressed with this unfortunately - it was too watery and didn't have much flavor. My sister said her limoncello cocktail was also watery. We wondered if the small ice cubes melted too quickly. I would recommend ordering wine or a straight up cocktail here, because the mixed drinks fell flat. My friend ordered whisky neat and was fine. Stepped in the door to Mart Anthony's and was transported to Brooklyn or Hoboken or the north end of Boston. Either way, whatever the vibe, this place is an old school Italian spot that treats you like family. Excellent run establishment. Service is laid back but attentive and friendly. It's like your uncle is serving you dinner. Dishes are so flavorful (and affordable!) with the perfect serving size. The Theresa pizza is a must try if you're looking for the Italian and Chicago mashup. So good. Pastas were amazing, there's definitely something for everyone. From the service to the atmosphere and most importantly the food, Mart Anthony's is a solid 5 stars from me! Started off dinner with some Super Tuscan wine and some bruschetta. Loved the wine as we ordered multiple glasses of it. For dinner my husband and I split a Theresa Pizza (think Italian beef sub but on pizza) and Pappardelle Bolognese. Both were delicious *chefs kiss*. We topped off the meal with a piece of tiramisu which did not disappoint. I would definitely order all of those again but will want to try different menu items too as so much looks good. This place does get busy so highly recommend a reservation on weekends! They have valet parking as well if you want to drive. Can't wait for my next visit!! read more

A nice family run and owned place from 3 generations. It's a lovely place and a nice residential area, you have street parking but parking is by permit only one and one side is free. I'm parked the food. Here was really good and the pizza was nice and thin crust and the cheese was very fresh. We had the Marty's pizza and it had basil and mozzarella and cherry tomatoes and it was done really perfectly and the sauce was very good and not salty and lots of garlic that was fresh. The chicken Parmesan was very good and the meat was juicy and tender, and it was breaded just right but the penne pasta on the side was very salty, but lots of really good tomatoes in the sauce. The penne pasta was done perfectly, but it was just a sauce that was very salty. The white fish with Vesuvio was very good and it was very tender and not overcooked and had a lot of rosemary in it. I wasn't a fan of the Vesuvio and wished the side was pasta instead. And the tables are very nice, but the only problem was I kept getting paper cuts from the paper that they put on top of the cloth tablecloth. My suggestion would be use a black tablecloth that you wash because it's good for the environment and you don't have to waste paper and the customers don't have to get paper cuts. You would also save money from not buying the paper. Better yet just have an easy table top to clean off w no tablecloth and you don't have to have any laundering service or paper to buy in rolls. The mocktail was just like a soda with no sugar and nothing inside (Amalfi Breeze) for $14 so I would never get that again because I'd rather get a ginger ale. They have nice options for seating with outdoor and garden that has air conditioning w a retractable roof, and inside seating as well with a bar. The only thing with the garden seating was that the lighting was very dark and the pink neon lights were distracting and hurt my eyes. read more

Mart Anthony's is a lovely place to go for a quiet dinner. There's great music playing and everyone is chill. It's a completely different place on a busy weekend night. It was so loud, we could hardly hear ourselves think. Conversing with nearly impossible. One can depend on the always mouthwatering and crispy calamari. That's the best thing they do. We also had a Caprese salad with tomatoes that were not quite ripe enough. Sadly, they had almost no taste. The pasta dishes were well received but I remain puzzled by the "stuffed" gnocchi. The very nature, gnocchi is nearly impossible to stuff. What we received were 1x2 inch pillows of pasta, maybe gnocchi dough, stuffed with a thin ribbon of spinach filling. It wasn't my cup of tea because the pasta was too heavy and dense, the filling was sparse and it felt gummy in my mouth. The peppers and sausage remain a puzzlement. The dish is OK because the sausage is just OK. In a city like Chicago, there are endless sources for great Italian sausage. Their sausage and peppers tastes the same year after year. The good news is it is consistent. The less great news is the sausage is lacking in taste and texture. It seems the rest of the party enjoyed everything so hooray! The desserts were fantastic and, I believe, are made in house. Bravo! Bravo! The meal ended on a high note. Great place for Italian. The owner of the restaurant is so nice and friendly and talks to every table. It's the kind of place where you know the locals go and the owner actually remembers you. The bread at the table was delicious and we had to stop ourselves so we could actually eat our dinner. Lobster ravioli and the pappardelle pasta was so delicious. My friends and I were last-minute looking for a restaurant on the weekend in Chicago and found this place. Located in a somewhat quiet part of town for me, the atmosphere is adorable and the service friendly. We had a couple of appetizers in the bruschetta and grilled calamari which were good, but not excellent. I ordered the black linguine as my main dish while my friends all ordered different entrees. The pasta was scrumptious and the seafood pieces were fat, delicious, and cooked perfectly. We topped off our meal with a great tiramisu. Another amazing night at Mart's... we went for my brothers bday and brought my family and grandma from the south side. Mart's has an amazing ability to make anyone feel at home - almost famiglia. It's affordable, family owned, down to earth, and so so good. Best grilled and fried calamari I've had in a while. The pasta dishes were all well loved and we can speak to the quality of the tomato based sauces. Also I loved their desserts - the cannolis tasted fresh filled. We stopped by Mart Anthony's for their annual festival called Marty Fest - in honor of their Patriarch. Yes the food is fantastic, old family recipes are delicious every visit. The restaurant and bar are vintage that gives a feeling of someone's home. The backyard patio is one of the best in the city. Located on a quiet spot of Hubbard Street in the West Town neighborhood, Mart Anthony's is a wonderful hidden secret. The festival offers so much. Live music from rock to Frank Sinatra. Family games, shade from trees, tons of seating, cocktails & wine and the best food in town. The crowd is always the best, so friendly and fun! It's not so huge that it's a hassle to participate and they even offer free valet! Outstanding patio / garden that is absolutely lovely to sit outside at. We have been to Mart Anthony's before (about a year ago) but for some reason, we fell in love with the place on this visit. They have Meomi Pinot Noir - which always escalates a place in my mind. We had several glasses and pairing that with the beautiful weather really made our night. Our server was great - I didn't catch his name, but he was funny and relatable. We started with the grilled calamari - which Mart Anthony's does a little different by adding paprika to the dish. It made it delicious and we couldn't get enough of it. Definitely an escalation on the normal calamari that you get elsewhere. For entrees - we had the Rigatoni Danielo and Veal Lemon. Both dishes were really great and I loved the extra lemon on my pasta. I had three nice size veals and took half the dish home. We saved room for this limencello sorbet dessert that came in a champagne flute. It was so delicious and so unique of a dessert. We would get that again. I love the outside patio here and I would highly recommend you eat there. The inside does seem "dark" to me so I would always opt for the patio. read more
