Great food, great staff, great atmosphere. Definitely an amazing place to celebrate a birthday or just go out for drinks with friends!

I have been here most recently three times since december. The first time they charged someones credit card wrong at our table. They split our bill and then charged someones card over $200 in addition to charging everyone else's card their correct amount. The second time we grabbed a carry out. I became incredibly sick with digestive issues. Thinking it was probably the MSG in the food I asked for no MSG in my recent meal there. Who knows if they really put it in or not because i once again had become sick with digestive issues with their food. The service was incredibly slow. It took the bartender around 20 minutes to make 5 drinks and then we waited about 25-30 minutes for our meal. Getting our bills was like pulling teeth because the waitress kept disappearing. On top of that they charged my credit card for someone else's bill at the table AGAIN!!! I am NOT happy about the poor service provided by this place that I had previously enjoyed going to. Its also incredibly annoying that the wait staff apparently cannot handle a larger table of people. Such a shame. read more

I went here for a birthday, never having been here before. That being said: ~Reserved table was not ready. ~Used restroom while waiting, to find no paper towel. Told the staff, and I believe they attended to this right away. ~Our server (Lisa) greeted us in a short and curt manner, and she was very quiet and difficult to understand. This difficulty to hear and understand her continued throughout the evening. She wasn't inadequate in any way, but it was just a little frustrating. ~Seated in center of dining room and we had to keep moving our chairs and standing up whenever someone needed to get by our table. ~The martinis we ordered were good, but nothing special. ~First appetizer (Ginger Garlic Eggplant) was good after a bite, however my mom had a hair in her bite, so we sent it back and asked for the manager. He was apologetic and offered to replace it with anything else, but we declined knowing we had another appetizer on the way. ~Second appetizer (Scallion Pancakes) was tasty and accompanied by a delicious sauce, but the pancakes were a bit too doughy, as if undercooked. Good flavor nonetheless. ~Our entrees arrived, everything was presented well. In addition to our entrees, we ordered a Chicken Fried Rice to share for the table. It was bland and not really fried, but it wasn't horrible. A couple people loved their meals (Pinenut Chicken and Roasted Duck) and my Mandarin Crispy Duck was ok. Two people had Sesame Chicken. One thought it was ok, and the other disliked it, the sauce disagreed with her. She ate two bites. When our server came by, my guest explained that she didn't care for her dish and requested something else, this time she chose Crab Rangoon. She enjoyed this dish. (I'd like to add that no meals come with rice, but you can add white rice for $.50 or brown rice for $1.00. I commend Lisa for notifying us of this charge up front.) ~To round off our meal, we inquired if they do anything special for a birthday. Our server said no, but we could buy a piece of cake at regular price. That didn't interest us at all, but if that is their policy, then so be it. ~When our check was presented, it showed a charge for 2 Sesame Chicken entrees, but no Crab Rangoon. The appetizer with the hair in it was not on the bill, thankfully. However, the Crab Rangoon is almost $10 less than Sesame Chicken, so we questioned the charge. Lisa said she replaced the entree with the appetizer, but didn't change the bill to reflect the change, but if we request her to do so, then she would. This was a bit frustrating, of course we want you to change it and we should not even have to ask. She did as we requested. ~Just to add, considering that the first thing that hit our table had a hair in it, the manager did not seem to care so much afterwards. Although he was concerned when it happened (because we asked to speak with him), he wouldn't even make eye contact with us the rest of the evening, nor did he check to see if everything else was satisfactory after the mishap. This was not a deal-breaker, but disappointing. ~Overall, the experience was ok. The atmosphere wasn't great, especially since we had to keep moving our chairs for people. Food was nothing special and neither was the service. Although Lisa did her job, she had no personality and didn't seem to really care if we were enjoying ourselves or not. Additionally, when we asked questions about items, she didn't really provide clear answers, but rather replied with as few words as possible. I regret choosing to celebrate my birthday here. The problem I have with most Chinese restaurants is the food is swimming in too much sweet or gooey sauces. This place does not do that at all. None of the food I ordered was overly flavored, and I didn't feel gross afterwards only to be hungry two hours later. The atmosphere is nice and classy for a Chinese restaurant. Service isn't the best, but it's not terrible. If anything, they just seemed overworked when I went there. This place just serves really good Chinese food, what more can I say? GO HERE! read more

After trying a few items at this place, my go to is the Korean Short Ribs. It is usually served on a bed of veggies, which I like. The one downside is that it's like 20+ for 3 slices of short ribs with NO rice... that's a bit steep in my opinion. So my bill for the Korean ribs and rice comes to about $24 each time I go here. It's delicious though and I always make sure to make a stop here when I'm in town for business. Can't say I was really impressed with the other food I've tried, but that's also because I'm spoiled with authentic Asian cuisine from the Bay Area. read more

Usaully a very pleasant experience. I have been coming here for years. This time there was a new bartender. She was very rude. I heard her bad talking about customers very loudly, which is very unprofessional and should not be part of my dining experience. But the food was wonderful as always. The magician there creeped out our table and asked the woman at the table to post a story and follow him before he did a trick. I believe his name was "Jacobismagic." He was pushy and rude. Typical...... I would recommend this guy be removed from the restaurant. It is not the setting for this. Other that this, the food and service was good. Besides the taller, bald, 50-60 year old manager. Who was spineless and did not notify the magician to not return to the table. The manager stood there like a puppet figure. I would hope the owner would find managers who would preset issues to their staff, as other customers were not pleased with this middle aged magician roaming around the restaurant disturbing quality meals. The magician then returned and we had to tell him ourselves to please leave, which he then pulled his mask down as if he wanted to get physical. Maybe he just needs some physical exercise. As per my other sushi reviews, my first criteria is whether they mince their spicy tuna. Unfortunately, this place does mince their spicy tuna rather than give you a normal tuna roll with spicy sauce added. I asked them to add cucumber and/or avocado to the tuna and Cali rolls that I ordered, which they did. They put sesame seeds on their rolls which is a nice bonus. let me start by saying this is not a "1 dollar sign" place. i checked two reviews and they both said price was $. people obviously don't know how frugal i am (read: cheap) and that kind of thing matters to me! one dollar sign means you can get a meal for under $10. definitely not the case here. everything on the lunch menu is at least $8 and by the time you add tax and tip, you're over $10, not to mention a drink. it's more in the $$ range. where it'll cost you AT LEAST $11 - $20 per person. i think i might start talking like that in real life... hey... sweet coat... that thing looks like it cost at least 3 dollar signs! digressing... we went for lunch, and nobody really felt like sushi... everyone was in a chinese food sort of mood. and mon jin didn't disappoint. the three people i went with all had the spicy szechwan chicken and i had the curry chicken. they all said they enjoyed there's, and i loved mine. lots of veggies... the eggrolls are really, really good.... full chunks of shrimp. but don't get a soda if you go... $3.25 my buddy paid for a coke! just drink the water and save yourself the cash. read more

Attended a birthday dinner for Geisha Wednesday where ladies get 50% off dinner entrees and sushi. Upon entering the host directed us to our table for 10 (reservations are a must!). We had a great view of the entire restaurant. I ordered a glass of Moscato (pink)- it was delicious! Ordered the sizzling rice soup for 2, house salad, and pad Thai. Everything tasted phenomenal. The pad Thai was large and filling. There was a DJ who began playing great music around 10pm. The outdoor patio has an additional bar and a vibrant scene as well! Highly recommended! read more

I'll start this review by saying that I am a big believer in second chances. The first time I went to Mon Jin Lau I had a wonderful time and would have been here singing their praises. The second time, however, left much to be desired. Mon Jin Lau is a nicely decorated restaurant and the architecture is unique. It's split level restaurant with two patio areas for outdoor seating, a large one and a small one. There are two dining room separated by a bar and the outdoor areas are lined with tall bushes, giving it a secluded and romantic feel. All the facilities and clean and up to date. It's just the kind of place that my friends and I frequent. The drinks were a little on the pricier end, but I don't mind that because it keeps the riff-raff away. I first went to Mon Jin Lau on a Wednesday which is their club night. It gets so busy that they offer free valet parking. They have a pretty good DJ, people dance and the crowd is young, suburban and trendy. My friends and I went in a group and we went early around 1030. We were easily able to find seating to sit, sip and talk but as the night progressed we decided to get in closer to the action and moved to an area by the dance floor and DJ. We had a small amount of difficulty finding a place to sit, but soon settled in. A lot of places have all their tables reserved for VIP and I don't know about you, but I'm not keen on standing in 4" heels for hours after dancing, so I avoid places with no place to sit. Mon Jin Lau had a nice mixed of reserved and public areas. The dance floor is a good size so you don't feel like you're getting your feet stomped on by muscle heads with two left feet or drunken party girls every two minutes. The host (or possibly the owner) David came over to talk to us and make sure we were having a good time. I really liked that he actually seemed to care if we were enjoying ourselves and he told us about some upcoming events they were having. We danced and had a great time. So a few Wednesdays later we returned and decided to have dinner before going to their Wednesday night event. We were able to make last minute reservations and were seated quickly, which was a bonus. Their kitchen closed at 1145 (or was it 1045) and we got in at 1100(1000?). It all went down hill from there because I unfortunately don't have very good things to say. If I followed Mom's old adage "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" there would be deafening silence for the rest of this review. It took the waitress ten minutes to come by an offer us a glass of water, which was in solo plastic glasses. All the surrounding tables, including a couple seated after us had glassware. We had a friend who was supposed to be be meeting us, so we waited to order but put in a drink order for two glasses of wine. Big mistake, because the waitress didn't come back for another 15 minutes. I understand it's busy, but 15 minutes and we hadn't ordered yet. At this point the kitchen closes in 20 minutes. So when the waitress finally did come back, she brings us two glasses of wine, one obviously chilled as evidenced by condensation on the glass, the other room temperature... and this was white wine. I guess I should have been thankful that they were in wine glasses. I ordered Sesame Chicken, one friend ordered Chicken Fried Rice and the third ordered Lettuce Wraps. The food came out quickly, but our water glasses (aka plastic solo cups) were left empty. Meanwhile, David, the host from before came by to ask us how our meal was. When asked "Was the food amazing?" my girlfriend gave the honest reply "Not really." He seemed taken aback and asked if it was the service or the food and she said both. Although we had not asked, David had the manager come over and speak with us. She offered us a free desert, which we did not partake in. She was very nice and after that, our waitress was much more attentive for the 15 minutes we remained seated. We went to the bar to get drinks. We ordered lemon drops. The first round was good, but we decided to order another round before making another attempt at finding a table. The bartender was lazy and sloshed our drinks all over the bar without sugar or lemons. When I asked for the sugar and lemons she got an attitude, poured our drinks into smaller plastic cups, threw the excess away (which we had already paid for and given her a tip )and basically tossed them at me. I was livid! She was so rude that I felt the need to get the manager involved. I wouldn't get a manager for poor service, but rude service... The manager gave us a free round of drinks and David called me himself the next day to apologize and offer us a round of free drinks on our next visit. The service recovery would make me go back. The management is very much about customer service... now if only they could get the waitstaff on board! Long story short, go for the bar scene, not for the food! read more

My friend recommended this restaurant to me because i've been trying to find some good sushi. Our waitress, recommended the salmon of the beach and after I tried it, I just fell in love with it. I love raw sushi too, but I rarely come across some good cooked sushi. The salmon of the beach really hit the spot and the red dragon was delicious too. I definitely will be back especially after I found out sushi is cheaper during happy hour. Let me open with this. Best Chinese in Metro Detroit. Every year on my birthday I tell my wife, this is where I want to go. For whatever reason it never happens. I used to go here all the time with my mom growing up and it was always my favorite so I want to go on my birthday. Well I end up just one or twelve too many drinks and it just doesn't happen. Well the other day I was like, you know what, F this, we're going to Mon Jin Lau. It was everything I remembered it being. The food was GREAT. Crab rangoons, spring rolls, peking duck... all so delicious. The fried rice was also very good and the amount you are served lasts for days. The peking duck was served with fresh, soft, and warm chinese pancakes with onions and hoisin sauce and tasted so good that I could not stop eating. I felt horrible after I left for eating so much and I still had leftovers the next day. They are a little pricey here but you certainly pay for the quality. I recommend this place to anyone who is searching to taste the best Chinese food in the area. read more

There are several words I can use to describe Mon Jin Lau, it's environment, cuisine, and service: amazing, delicious, clean, attentive, kind, accommodating and absolutely wonderful. However, the word that suits Mon Jin Lau best is the word TIMELESS. For over 30 years, my parents have made Mon Jin Lau their weekend date night spot. Their love for this restaurant was later passed down to my sister and I, as we frequented this restaurant growing up and still to this day. Hence, the word timeless. From the food, to the service, to the environment, Mon Jin Lau does not miss! I have never left Mon Jin Lau disappointed, whether I was going there for a girls night out, birthday parties, or just a lively Wednesday night out (which are the best), I always leave a happy customer waiting to come back again. I wish I could give this zero stars. Please do yourself and a favor and do not support this "restaurant". Quick highlights - the service was terrible, the food was pretty good, but nothing that we couldn't get elsewhere for cheaper. Our friends were honked at and almost hit by the valet on the way in, and then we were told we were on a "time limit" on our table. And we weren't the only ones! While waiting for our car, a gentleman told us of his similarly bad experience and that he was rudely kicked out of the place for spending too much time at his table. Apparently this was one of their "hot" nights, and we're still not exactly sure why, but we were rudely pushed out, and have our suspicions as to why. There are way too many great restaurants in the area to spend your hard-earned money at this one. Do yourself a favor and try one of the others! read more

The sushi and ambiance were great, my dinner entree not so much. I started my meal with a rainbow roll and it was fresh, flavorful, and delicious. I'm that person who always orders the usual because that's what I like and I don't want to risk ordering something I'll be unhappy with. I could hear my husband's voice in my head urging me to try something new. I ordered "sizzling Thai chicken". When it arrived it was not sizzling. Neither was the heat of the spice. I'm not sure what was supposed to be sizzling. When I asked our server she giggled and said, "Oh it sizzling in kitchen." Whatever, it was bland as hell and a mistake. I would definitely come back for sushi and maybe a safer entree like sesame chicken or almond boneless chicken. read more

My favorite hot spot for great Chinese food :) it never gets old and I normally come back all the time. It's a little small but it makes things cozy, I wish the place was bigger but service is always a 10 there. Food drinks and friends is all you need. This place is hit or miss. The decor is beautiful and quite pleasant to dine but the food can be all over the place. The sushi is good but overprice. The Chinese food can be a little heavy on the fried. I recently had the mandarin fish which was really good. I live right down the street from this place so I know it very well. When eating at the restaurant it is a 5 star. Unfortunately carry out is only a 3 star. The food is still hot whenever I get a carry out but for some reason it's lacking. Idk if it's the cheap carry out boxes, which definitely should not be used at a restaurant that's this expensive, but it's just never as good carry out. When dining at the restaurant it's always amazing though. Favorites are sesame chicken, pepper steak, and TNT roll. read more

Out of this world!!! I always order the same thing (I can't help it, when I get a chance to go I stick with what I know is awsome) Start with sizzling rice soup. It is full of chicken, giant shrimp and crispy veggies - not too saly either-it always taste really fresh. Then Crispy Squid Szechuan, this is the best dish on the menu!!! Rick (editor of Hour Detroit) must have been smoking something when Hong Hua was named restaurant of the year- because Mon Jin Lau invented Chinese Fusion Fine Dining- I guess they were just taken for granted. Not that there is anything wrong with Hong Hua (other than using the bar to put dirty plates on when they bus thier tables) it's just Mon Jin Lau is out of thier league. I met a friend at Mon Jin Lau for some happy hour action. Crazy enough, I had never been there. It's just one of those places that never pops up on the radar. As everyone advised me, it was very good and the happy hour specials were great. $2 beers and I got the Thai Chicken, which was only $4. This place was amazing! I've gone here for dinner, and for a huge special event. Even when the place was packed, all the clientelle and staff were sooo nice. For such a busy night, I have no idea how they found enough fantastic people to staff the place! On the big party night, the kitchen had just closed before we got there, but they let us order a bunch of Thai Chicken. Also, our drink orders were filled promptly, and the waitress even remembered who ordered which drink. Despite the crowd, all the staff were efficient, pleasant, and made us feel very welcome. Most restaurants can't pull of this kind of service, even on slow nights. 5 stars! For dinner, everything was stellar, of course. The food here is so good that I'd recommend being adventurous and trying lots of things on the menu. Yummm. I love the atmosphere and decor there, and the multiple rooms flow nicely from one to the other. For those of you who smoke, they have heaters on their porch for chilly evenings. I'm trying to make it my entire life without ever going to PF Chang's to pay homage to independent Chinese places. Mon Jin Lau is my way of getting an upscale Asian dining experience while staying true to that thought. Their food is amazing - the lettuce wraps are my favorite! It's also a place where there is something for everyone from rangoon to sushi to almond chicken and wonton soup. The take out is just as good as eating in the dining room. The drinks are great too. If you go, I'd recommend dressing a little nicer than jeans and a t-shirt. read more
