We had some extra time waiting for a plane arrival at the airport so, we decided to look for a local place for lunch. We ended up at Monaghans Pub and as soon as we arrived, we knew we were at the right place. Very patriotic, supports our troops, supports our police and celebrates Christmas. We both ordered cheese steaks with fried onions. They were excellent! The owner Joe came over to our table and welcomed us. The place is very clean and well appointed. The patrons there all seemed friendly and polite. We totally enjoyed our lunch and will definitely plan another visit even though it's a 40min drive from home. read more

This little place was a quick walk from my hotel and recommended by the front desk. I stopped in for a beer and cheesesteak. It had a small town charm to it and seemed to have a lot of locals. Service was friendly. I sat at the bar, it was wing night, but, being from Buffalo, I went with a cheesesteak. She asked how I wanted it and i asked how the locals do it. She suggested fried onions, I was sold. Great sandwich on a nice bun, made with a white cheese, American maybe, I wasn't too sure. I also ordered the Old Bay fries. 100% recommend trying these! I pretty much ate them all before even starting the sandwich. I've never heard of them before, but such a simple thing and wow! I'm surprised more places aren't jumping on this one! Checked yelp for reviews as I was hungry after a long day of travel, but didn't want to venture too far guild my airport location. I had a Philly cheesesteak as they were rated highly but it was only ok. Size was huge though. It definitely had a strong neighborhood bar feel to it, but as an outsider I didn't necessarily feel I belonged. Thankfully several tvs had a baseball game on and I faked interest in that as I ate my food. It was nice that there was a cider on tap. I stumbled upon this place because I was desperately avoiding Denny's and the diner near my hotel. This place is definitely a pub. I can't really imagine bringing children here (I'm not even sure it's allowed), but I suppose you could try. This is absolutely a locals bar. I am not a local. BUT, I ended up chatting all night with the people at the bar. Super nice people. I had the cheesesteak and it was actually amazing. I am not a cheesesteak connoisseur, but it was pretty delicious. If you're staying at the hotels around here, this is WAY better than the diner and Denny's. Come here instead. read more

After the USA won against Paraguay in the final Copa America Group A tournament (1-0, USA down a man), we were hungry! We knew trying to find a non-crowded place to eat was going to be difficult near Lincoln Financial Field, so we opted to find a place near our airport hotel. Thanks yelp! When I called to confirm when the kitchen closed (1AM on a Saturday night), it didn't seem to be noisy. I thought, well that's good! Contrary to my impression, when we walked in, it wasn't crowded, but it was pretty loud! But that's ok, an Englishman saw our USA gear on, asked the score, and we exchanged pleasantries. Most people were dressed in work attire, like dresses and buttoned down shirts, but we were not turned away. I ordered the small cottage pie, which was the right fit for me. The small cottage cheese pie is about the same size as Stag's Head in Houston or really any other bar. I am afraid to know what the large size is! I think the potatoes were not flavored much BUT the meat was delicious. Since you mix everything up, it's ok if the potatoes don't have much flavor. This place uses green beans for their veggies in the entree. A couple of friends ordered the fish and chips. The fries looked ok, but the fish (had a bite) was fantastic. It was moist inside without being soggy, and the batter was "crunchy all the way through" as a friend put it. If I ever go back (which I wouldn't mind doing if in the area), I definitely would like to order this. One of my friends said, "I think that's the best fish and chips I've ever had in the United States!" Be forewarned that this may be a bit difficult to get to, but don't let that deter you. At the stoplight, you need to somewhat make a right u-turn into the one way street. Then, you can drive across the street into the parking lot. There were plenty of spaces at 11PM at night, which was great (unlike Philly downtown)! Good food, good parking, and a good atmosphere = 4 stars! read more

This is a solid place to go for cold beers and decent, well priced food. I had the Shepherd's Pie, it was spot on. The wife had the roast pork, also very good. The service was good; the staff seems to be generally hard working and social. I always say that consistency is paramount in every business. Monoghans has consistently been good, on many levels, in my eyes and deserves a 5 all around. They poured a perfect Guinness to boot. Recommend to anyone staying near the Philadelphia airport. I asked the front desk person of my hotel for a nearby recommendation, and they recommended Monaghan's and I'm so glad they did. I was the only foreigner (being from Texas) in the bar. Staff and patrons were all friendly. They have music BINGO on Tuesday nights for free, which adds to the ambiance and camaraderie. Good food, cold beer, pub atmosphere, a strong but not unpleasant sense of "local". The menu is fairly short, typical pub food, done well, not fancy, and priced reasonably. Being a pub, it's "seat yourself" which I noticed confused one or two parties when they arrived. Not a big issue, the local quirks are part of the fun of not going to a chain restaurant. The only complaint I could make is that food was a little slow, for which the bartender apologized profusely and without any suggestion from me of a problem (it wasn't a problem; I had nothing else to do). Even that would be a very small complaint. Overall, I would go back without hesitation the next time I'm in the Philly airport area overnight. read more

On the recommendation of our hotel manager we walked 20 minutes to this friendly neighborhood pub on a hot July afternoon. We hit the jackpot!! The beer was cold and the food was excellent. Just stopped in for a snack around 9; nice-size crowd for Essington. Really courteous and prompt staff. Food looks and tastes good. Mind you, I only ordered fries and a tossed salad (fresh vegetables (no brown spots or wimpy picks) and nicely executed fries (and a good portion of them, too!)). Might have eaten in, except the bar smelled like, well, a bar and that's not incredibly appetizing if you're not drunk. Excellent pub near the airport with great food and cheap drinks. If you're into people watching, this is your place. It has a combination of locals, old guys with young women (from the strip club next door), airport workers at the end of their shift, and confused airport passengers looking for something to do. It all blends nicely into a great pub atmosphere. They have really great wings and fries. And all their appetizers are pretty awesome too, the jalapeno poppers taste homemade. I really dig their pizza, it reminds me (in a good way) of skating rink pizza. The daily specials really make Monaghan's all blend together. If you're staying near PHL airport, this place is a must. I'm here on a Thursday night, and the special is cheese steak for $5. Hands down, it blows away those two "famous" places in South Philly that I tried the other day. The atmosphere is a classic, home-town pub where locals hang out after work. Everyone is friendly and the staff is amazing. Nikki was especially helpful and attentive, and the other staff members were making patrons feel at home. I have never experienced service this bad in my entire life. I seated myself, had to ask a waitress for a menu, waited 25 minutes before I asked the bartender to bring me a water and then my original waitress finally showed with my meal, water and check. She missed part of my order, so I went and asked for the rest of my order, and then watched the waitress serve the other table what I was waiting on. Twice!!! At this point, she comes over and wants the money.
