Two weeks ago, I booked two massages at Monarch Spa to celebrate my mother-in-law being two years cancer free. Before booking, I called several times to confirm availability and finally got through to someone who told me there were openings at 2:45 and that I could finish the booking online. I completed the reservation online, entered my credit card information, and pressed complete, so I was surprised when I visited today to be told it appeared the booking had not gone through. When we arrived, the spa couldn't find our reservation and explained they'd been having problems with their new booking system. A few staff members even mentioned that other guests had experienced similar issues. My mother-in-law was visiting from Pittsburgh PA, and we had driven over an hour for the appointment, so it was really disappointing. We also ended up having to choose different services than we originally wanted because our massage reservation could not be found. Thankfully, the staff was very kind and did their best. They were able to fit us in for manicure and pedicure instead but a different times. The spa itself was beautiful and relaxing, and we still ended up having a nice experience overall. Shelly, our manicurist, was fantastic. That said, I truly never complain, which is why this was especially disappointing. I really hope management gets the booking issues sorted out soon because it put a damper on what was supposed to be a really special day. I also feel like some kind of gesture or acknowledgment would have been appropriate for the mistake. My partner and I had the best anniversary weekend at Monarch! We booked a King Spa Suite which came with a large jetted tub overlooking the mountains. We are both short ('5, "4) and we're both able to soak at the same time. Our room was spacious and the king bed was so comfortable - it was awesome! Staff were so nice and kind throughout our stay. Pros: Free Parking for all (not just those who stay here), luxury on a budget, free soft drinks and coffee/tea on the casino floor, kiosk check-in available Cons: Food options weren't my scene. The spa is SOOOOOOO nice! If you're going as a couple, all of the pre- and post- service amenities are in a coed space: the laconium lounge (with heated benches and a bubbling fountain) to ease into the rest of the heated amenities, which include a mountain river steam room (with a steam function involving hot stones going into a pool of cool water that has an accompanying cheesy song that plays - relaxing nonetheless), a dry sauna, and the hot tub area. Don't forget your swimsuit to allow for enjoyment of these areas without worrying about a wardrobe malfunction! Showers, snacks, fruit infused water, tea, body wash, lotion, and even contact solution are available! The buffet is...a buffet. Surprisingly good beef curry, average mac & cheese, decent pizza, dry salmon, dry chicken, decent cheesecake. Incredible service - we were asked multiple times if we wanted drink refills, despite us showing up 30min before the posted closing time. We had plenty of time to eat and considering how late we were, it was refreshing to a) not feel rushed and b) not feel like ALL of the food had been sitting out for hours. If you want a different dining experience, there is a 24/7 diner area and there are actual restaurants for dinner (we weren't there that late). What does one do on a 98 degree day? We head up to Monarch Casino. My review is only going to be based on the casino since we went for a couple of hours to gamble. The casino is pretty much smoke free unless you go outside which is so nice. It's super clean and very bright inside as well. They have a variety of different type of slot machines to black jack tables and more. The parking is free unless you do valet. For all the electric car owners they have a lot of free charging parking spots which is a nice perk. Would love to try their buffet and steak restaurants one day. There should be ZERO question that the Monarch Casino Resort is a solid 5-star location! I can only think the reviewers that have knocked down the ratings are either: 1) Disgruntled employees; 2) Competing casino shills; or 3) Gamblers that have lost money at the slots. Amazing time! From the valet that gave us an extra large parking space for new truck, to check in. Our room was club level and super clear. Dinner at chop house was delicious and service was perfect! Casino staff very accommodating. Breakfast in club level was very good. Service was Johnny on the spot. Bar tender made the BEST bloody Mary's we've had in a very long time. Check out was super easy. Valet had our vehicle parked right out front, didn't have to wait even 30 seconds. We are a mixed race married couple and had ZERO issues. This is a beautifully built hotel. The rooms were nice, upgraded, and clean. We had a group of ladies hanging out in one room getting ready and the bathroom was large enough for 4 people to stand comfortably. We didn't see much of the grounds because it was night time but our group was there for a fun night out and half the group stayed for the spectacular spa. It seemed like the spa day was everyone's favorite and even though the services were pricy, they all want to return and do it again because the service and the grounds were stellar. With a service you get access to the spa and its pools for the day so spend some time up there! We weren't big into gambling, but there is a store on the third floor that has designer clothing and purses which peaked our interests! Went up for one night. Morning of checkout, we decided we wanted to purchase for pillows. What we got were four pillows wrapped in two trash bags, not individually packaged!!!!!!! we called to talk to them about this. They were so rude. They said that's how they come so they're selling us used pillows. Can you believe that we did not realize this until we got home and opened up the big two white trash bags with the four pillows inside, not individually packaged spoke with five different people today extremely rude. We went here for our anniversary and booked a spa suite a year ago and had an absolutely amazing time! Chop house is something to try if you haven't been, and the food and service was exceptional. We also were new to the rewards program and everyone was courteous and walked us through everything and service was overall fantastic. So what changed? We went and stayed twice around the holidays, and the service at the video poker bars, Twenty-Four 7, Mariposa, and casino were horrendous. We were treated as though we didn't belong there both times. Upon the first occasion, we had been playing video poker and a shift change occurred in that time. I had no problem being served until the next bartender came and demanded a wrist band. I informed him we were guests of the hotel and he demanded to see my ID, despite them checking ID once you enter the casino. I complied but was uncomfortable and decided to head to another casino shortly after. The next occasion, I had vouchers for Mariposa, from the birthday, which wasn't open either day of our initial stay. Once we entered, the hostess was not about it, despite being open for another hour and a half. We asked to sit and the bar and were told she needed to talk to the manager, to which he said no, despite patrons sitting there. So we left. Upon going to place a takeout order (at Twenty-Four 7) as we were playing video poker at the bar, we were met with "I don't do to go orders, only dine in, but I'll do it this time" to which the bartender left immediately after saying that. I decided to place the order at the front counter to do things correctly, and the bartender got irritated with me over that as well. The food was horrible and cold each time we placed orders there. Upon check out, I brought my concerns up to the concierge and was told they have no say over those things because they're separate entities, despite room charges being made for those establishments through Monarch. I am disappointed because I had a such an amazing time the first time I stayed. But I will be staying at the Ameristar in the future. read more

They will change your female masseuse to a male and not care even though it's a mandatory field when you book. I bought my daughter a massage here for her 19th birthday. Her first massage experience. During the booking I requested a female masseuse for her. I didn't tell her that but I knew she wouldn't be comfortable with an older man doing this service. They pushed her appointment out 1/2hr and changed her masseuse to a male. She didn't know we had options and was weirded out by the situation. The desk manager made the whole thing weird. I had a pleasant stay here overall but the check-in process was horrendous. I was told that check-in time was 4 pm and we arrived there at 4 pm to check in and they said my room wasn't ready. They assured me that 6 pm at the latest my room would be ready and sure enough, 6pm hit and no phone call or email like they promised. They said if the room wasn't ready by 6 pm then I'd have a free upgrade. Instead, they said there were no suites available so they gave me a $40 food voucher which was honestly not great but at least it was something. Other than the horrible check-in experience and having to wait awkwardly on the 23rd floor for 2 hours, the pool itself and restaurants were nice. Made reservations for my wife's birthday at the spa for 400pm. I got to the hotel and tried to check in around 300pm. Told the front desk we had spa reservations at 4. I would give three and a half stars if Yelp let me but since I can't, we're going with three here. After checking out all of Blackhawk, I am confident we stayed at the nicest hotel. The customer service here is truly amazing. From valet, to check in, to the lounge areas. The hotel is gorgeous. The issues we experienced were not make or break to our experience but worth sharing and did kill the vibes upon arrival. We checked in around 3:30 and got settled into our room. The floor around the spa tub was sticky and the room was quite warm. We left for a while to explore and upon returning the room was still very warm (even with having the A/C going for hours) We talked with the front desk and they sent up maintenance. We left for a few more hours to return to a room was still warm. When calling down again, they offered two fans to help cool our room. The maintenance team was very friendly and helpful but it was not the most ideal sleeping temps. We did not see a change in our bill with the issues. The rooms are very quiet! I wasn't woken up once in the middle of the night to any noises. Spend a little more and get the room with the bathtub. It's worth it! The lounge on the 20th floor was a nice spot to have a snack and relax with great views. The gals working in the lounge were great and provided a superb customer experience. The outdoor rooftop hot tub was so nice. While small, it's a great spot to unwind and let go of your troubles aka losing all your money downstairs! Lol read more

Only visited the spa for a couples massage on this visit (didn't stay at the hotel) and I have to say, the current number 2 rank amongst national spas is well deserved. The spa amenities, staff, and ambiance is simply top notch. Having experienced some of the other luxury spas around, Monarch spa ranks right up there. The 90 minutes massage went very fast but was oh so relaxing. Highly recommend Holly. The respiratory therapy room was another wonderful spot. Reminded me of a pink Himalayan salt room at other spas we've experienced, this one had a nice cool temperature and cozy blankets and chairs where it's totally possible to fall asleep. The locker rooms have everything you need and nothing you don't. Decent snacks, tea, water...a swim suit spinner to help dry it. My only criticism is the rainfall setting in the sauna soaks the heck out of you so you may as well just take a hot shower. All in all, my wife and I are already plotting our return! read more

During a family visit to celebrate my mother's 80th birthday, the spa manager publicly told my daughter to leave the women's dressing room and use the men's, stating she assumed my daughter was in the wrong place because of her appearance. This was said in front of about 15 other guests instead of being addressed privately. We were playing roulette and were told by one dealer that the table minimum was $25 total -- only to have a second dealer (after our bet was placed and accepted) say it was actually $25 inside and outside. Instead of honoring the previous dealer's word or even explaining the confusion respectfully, the pit boss -- Ben -- laughed in our faces when we questioned the inconsistency. Laughing at guests who are trying to get clarification on house rules? That's how you treat customers? Only when we said we were ready to leave did he change his tone -- too little, too late. This place isn't about fair gaming or guest experience -- it's about flexing power and brushing off accountability. Prefacing this review with the fact that I am a non-gambler, I wish that it was possible to give different star ratings to the different components of two visits. We much appreciated the five star treatment upon checking-in and in the spa. Who doesn't love a rooftop pool/jacuzzi surrounded by mountain views and adjacent bar? I looked around up there and thought about why pedicures are not offered at Golden Corral and why Waterworld's Pharoh's Feast eludes me. On our first visit, my partner and I got a jacuzzi suite with access to an exclusive lounge. We filled up on the happy hour food, which was decent but unfortunately by the time we were hungry again the only options were chicken fingers etc at the 24/7 cafe where we decided we definitely were not coming back for breakfast. My partner's colleague highly recommended the spa day pass and The Buffet, so on our next visit we did both. The day spa experience was incredible! I did not think it was possible to have a spiritual experience at a casino. I cannot believe they coordinated that thunderstorm to the exact moment I was peaking in the Experience Shower. Other highlights included the granola, pretzels, and grapes in the ladies lounge area where I became the #1 fan of Jenwey Tea Company's Summer Berry Peach. The Hills Have Eyes Buffett was also an experience. The miracle of watching all of those brave souls who have survived three nuclear wars enjoying crab legs! (Incredible in a different way) Next time, I will be stocking the mini-fridge with my favorite provisions. This may be petty; the Chromecast does not work on the TV and they only have old fashioned cable. As a result I saw more commercials during my stay than in the last 15 years. I didn't know phone sex infomercials still exist! Casino tech support gaslit me about it being a problem with my device; on a follow up call they admitted they're phasing out Chromecast. They said, "it doesn't work in most rooms". The guy basically called me pathetic for staying in my room to watch TV when I could be gambling or at least getting laid. After the buffet I was not in the mood for that or a dystopian movie marathon on A&E with the partially scrambled cable signal and out of synch audio. I really just wanted to cast YouTube music. The fact that I had to watch Book of Eli (2010 post-apocalyptic neo-western action thriller starring Mila Kunis and Denzel Washington) made my review drop an entire star. All that just so Lombardi could put the King James Bible in between the Quran and the Torah. . Actually I guess I didn't have to do that because of course I brought my Kindle to the casino. Eventually, it occurred to me to use my phone to play my favorite video (Healing your Ancestral Karma) on the "Healing Vibrations" YouTube channel. The Monarch Casino is about a hour from Denver. It's a beautiful drive up to Blackhawk, with many places to pull over & enjoy the mountain scenery or walk the trails along the water. Our destination this Saturday morning was to try out The Buffet for brunch. The buffet dining room decor was done nicely in gold tones & wood. Representing the monarch butterfly the ceiling had gold butterfly sculptures in flight & there was also a wall of butterflies. Since this is an all you can eat buffet we paid for our meals at check-in & were given many receipts with no explanation. We later discovered the extra receipts were to get one small lobster tail & one serving of crab legs or two tails or two crab leg servings. We were seated promptly. Our server was pleasant, but slow on taking drink orders & removing dirty plates. The Buffet was set up in stations - Italian, Mexican, Charcuterie, Asian, Mongolian, Favorites, Seafare & Sweets. The salad bar, soup & fruit area was expansive. All the stations were clean, the serving dishes full & the attendants were friendly & helpful. I pretty much sampled something from each station except for the breakfast food area where they were serving waffles, breakfast meats & every which way you'd like your eggs. Even though many dishes were tasty I found this to be your typical buffet fare, with a pricey price tag of $58.99 pp, non-alcoholic drink included. There were however a few standouts like the steak, ribs & egg rolls. They were absolutely delicious! I was happy to see lobster & crab, but the lobster tails were not clean plus the lobster tails & crab were over-cooked as well as the salmon. In the Sweets section it surprised me to see cotton candy & a chocolate fondue machine with strawberries, Rice Krispie treats & marshmallows. The soft serve ice cream machines were out of order. I stumbled upon Monarch last year through an Instagram ad. My boyfriend and I decided to go for Superbowl/Valentine's day and loved the property and town of Blackhawk so we decided to make it an annual trip. The resort is extremely clean and has modern decorations. You can tell it's fairly new and well maintained. The buffet is delish but pretty expensive. I kind of expect a lot more for the price. There are no real vegetables besides salad. Crab and lobster tail are offered on the weekends/holidays but is ticketed and only one serving is given to each guest. The good thing is people typically hand out leftover vouchers. The 24/7 restaurant has moderate pricing but a pretty diverse menu and it is a huge plus to have a 24 hour restaurant on property. I have not dined at the other dining outlets at the resort. The room highlight for me is definitely the bathroom. It is fairly large with a private area with a door for the toilet and a bench in the shower. Housekeeping is by request only, and you don't know that unless you know. There isn't anything in the room letting you know that. The amenities definitely stand out. The spa is expensive but well worth it as any spa service includes use of the spa amenities. The pool is medium size but good enough for a lap or float. There are 3 hot tubs, one outside. There is seating and a firepit outside. The elevators also are a huge plus-a specific elevator is designated to you based on the floor you select after waving your room key under a tablet like device. This eliminates long wait times and stopping at multiple floors that you might experience at other resorts. Parking and valet are free. The service is a bit hit or miss. There always seems to only be 1 or 2 staff members at the check-in desk and the line builds fast. It was difficult to get someone on the phone on our check out day to request bell service. Buffet service is nothing to brag about. However, the service at the pool and at 24/7 was timely and friendly. The casino is lively at all times of day. Table minimums are what you would expect for this kind of resort, nothing less than $25 most times. Monarch is picture perfect and stands out in Blackhawk. I'm only taking away a star because of the dining prices and service. The room rates are reasonable and the location is easily accessible and a nice getaway from the metro area. read more

We were staying at another casino in Blackhawk and decided to head over to the Monarch. It is the very first casino you see on entering Blackhawk. Parking was a breeze and we.were in! We decided to try the buffet and I must admit it was pretty good. Of course I remember the good old days when food was low priced in casinos but that day is long gone. The buffet was very pricey but it was still a nice meal which included crab legs and lobster. There was a nice variety of foods from Mexican to oriental to American and more. The service was quite good so if you go to Blackhawk it's a fine place to go. After that we enjoyed a little gambling at this location. We had a very nice time. The slots were loose enough that you could play a while. Nowadays the slot machines are really quite fancy. They entertain you as they take your money! All in all I consider the Monarch as the best place to go for an enjoyable time. The place was busy so I suspect the word is out that you can have a good time there.
