Great stay at a vintage property just down from the Monarch ski area. The food was on point. We had to dinner and breakfast twice. The pizza was really tasty. They make their own dough. Gary handled the evening dinner meals and was extremely gracious. We also had the Monarch burgers at night. The fries are waffle fries and also very tasty. The burger was delicious. Breakfast was also very tasty. Carl served our breakfast each day. Eggs, pancakes, sausage, oatmeal. The oatmeal was cooked fresh. He cooked and served. The property has been around a while. But it still has life in it and it is such a vintage place. The food was excellent. Vanessa at the front desk was also very helpful and gracious. The shuttle driver also was extremely nice. It was a blizzard. Had to chain up the shuttle to get the van up to Monarch ski area. But he did so without any issue. One of the staff members, Jason, even volunteered to dig out our Toyota 4-runner the night before we left. I just stayed there last weekend (6/19-20/2026) and the experience was misserable. Resteraunt was closed even though their website said it was open, no toilet paper in the room, TV didn't work and was supplied a Roku which also never worked. The worst was when the entire facility lost water pressure on our last morning, no water to flush toliet, no shower! Please DO MOT stay there until they are forced to fix many issues. Look- it's not easy to find a cheap clean hotel near a ski resort that also allows pets. Some of the reviews regarding the dated nature of the hotel are a little harsh. Yes. It's dated and there is wear and tear but our room was clean, the beds and pillows were comfortable and our tv worked. I think it would be great to have a mini fridge and/or microwave. There's a keurig for coffee and fresh toiletries. All in all for a no frills place it's a nice spot to rest your head before hitting monarch. We did not go in the pool but there were families swimming and there's a cute weight/game room. We ate breakfast at the cafe which was also good. Recommend the breakfast burrito if it is on the menu for the day! read more

It is a dump. Broken window, smells like urine, no air conditioner. The pictures on the website have to be from 30 years ago because we prepaid 1250.00 for 6 nights and I ask for a refund and they refused said I would have to go thru my AAA agent. I had to call on a 2 way radio from the front desk for someone to come check me in the he showed me the rooms they smelled like urine, no a/c cracked windows. Where do I begin. The only person who seems to work there was (most likely) very high and couldn't seem to help out with any of our problems. All hot tubs were broken which was of course not communicated to us and the only other appeal (the game room) was completely broken. They advertised a general store of some kind but it was locked at 3 PM and the guy goes "I can unlock it for you" most likely alluding to the fact that he's the only person who works here. Seeing reports of bed bugs so can't wait to inspect for that. Also I grabbed a towel off the shower rod and the shower rod literally broke off the wall. read more

At least once a year, my husband and I make the trek to Monarch Lodge--and we love it. It's refreshing to escape the generic, corporate, characterless ski resort lodges that have taken over Colorado. Monarch Lodge has character--not in the old-log-building-with-a-stone-fireplace kind of way, but in the "modern" 1970s ski chalet style, now a fascinating study in delayed maintenance. Not that maintenance is neglected. The handyman is everywhere--shoveling snow, fixing things, checking guests in, and rescuing those who've locked themselves out (which seems to be a regular occurrence). A man of few words but many talents, he always greets you with an inviting smile. The lodge's kitchen is a delightful surprise. Given the remote location and lean staff, the food is impressively fresh and delicious. Morning or night, Gary and Carl welcome guests to the sprawling restaurant overlooking the South Arkansas River. Like all the staff, they embody the warmth and curiosity of true mountain people--no pretentious jet-setters posing in pristine Moncler jackets with skis they've never used. Breakfast featured hearty rye bread and delicious omelets, while dinner offered a variety of satisfying sandwiches and burgers. The beds were comfortable, and while the rooms were dated, they had everything we needed--plus a lovely view. Best of all, we can still afford to stay here without draining the bank account. We hope to keep skiing at Monarch and soaking up its old-fashioned Western hospitality for as long as possible. read more

I have been here as a kid 20 years ago. I just stayed here again in December 2023. Sadly nothing has been kept up. Lights are out everywhere, carpets and rooms are pretty dingy. The final nail in the coffin were bed bugs we found after our first night. We left immediately after. I really hope someone decides to manage this place and make it nice. It's a real shame... This is an older, rustic mountain lodge, located just a few miles from Monarch Pass. We drove right past it the first time, as there doesn't seem to be any signs telling us what it was. It's definitely an old lodge and shows many signs of age, but it still has a great vibe. We got two actual keys for our room, but only one worked. We told the front desk staff and she got another one from the back, which also didn't work! I'm wondering when they'll update to key cards. The room itself was big, had a beautiful view, and was very comfortable. A little coffee maker was there, but no microwave or fridge. I also didn't see a hair dryer. The pool was indoor and heated, so we took advantage of that. There is also a peaceful little lake in the back that we enjoyed. We ate supper in the restaurant. Due to it being slow season, they had a limited menu. I enjoyed my hamburger and the fries were some of the best I've ever had! There was one person working as cook, server, host, bartender, etc, but he did great! Everyone on staff was friendly and we enjoyed our stay. Pros: Cute Stream, Great Staff, Vintage Mountain lodge feel. Cons: No Ac, (or windows, just a door to a public balcony to cool down the room in the summer) limited amenities. Our joint rooms shared a bathroom. This place is OLD and unlike any hotel I have ever stayed in. That being said, if you are wanting something unique and pet friendly as your passing through the mountains, stop by. This place is great for kids! They have an indoor basketball court, racquetball court, indoor pool, and several little sitting areas to hang out in. Just remember, this place is OLD. Zero stars. Similar to staying at the hotel in the Shining. Nobody around, everything is 1970ish, hot tubs aren't working, some type of grit in the beds (don't think it was bedbugs, didn't get any bites or welts), zero ambiance in the restaurant and overall a dumpy place. Do not waste your time or money here. First red flag was a lodge 4 miles from the ski resort and only a handful of cars in the parking lot. Second red flag was the door key was an actual key on the plastic fob from the 70s. Third red flag was the popcorn textured ceilings. Last major red flag was the owner is out of Katy, Texas. I'm sure they haven't been to the property in years and don't have any intention of updating the lodge, maybe hoping to sell it. Brutal stay, we left after the first night. read more

FILTHY DIRTY! The bathroom floor was disgustingly dirty. Loose dirt under the sink and in the corners of the bath. The floor tile and grout were filthy and looked like they hadn't been mopped in a long time. The walls were full of holes and patches. There is paint and popcorn ceiling peeling off the bathroom ceiling. The shower stopper was covered in mold. Only the tops of furniture had been dusted. The nonfunctional fireplace was covered in thick dust. The door does not have a hotel style security latch and has about an inch gap between the door and the floor. Furniture has scratches all over it as it very dated. The bed skirt is dirty and ripped. The curtains don't hang right and are old and worn. We did not eat here because with the cleanliness issues visible in the room there's no telling what the kitchen may be like. It's proximity to the mountain is a plus but, the dirty and worn conditions don't make up for it on my opinion. read more

I made the mistake of not reading reviews before booking a stay here. Don't make the same mistake. This place is a DUMP! As soon as you pull into the parking lot you can see that it has not been maintained or updated in decades. The decor is extremely dated, old and worn. The walls of our room were cinder block and the curtains were literally falling off of the rod. I had to use hair clips just to hold them closed at night. Their website is extremely misleading and clearly meant to fool people like us who didn't do more research. It was so bad that we even tried to find somewhere else to stay after our first night, but everything in Salida was booked. Just don't! read more

Pros: Extremely close to monarch mountain ski resort. That's extremely convenient for people who are boarding all day to be able to come back quickly and relax. The staff is friendly. Dogs are allowed. Cons Way Over priced for what you get. Older building of course, but a broken bathroom vent hanging off the ceiling isn't excusable. Room does not have a fridge or microwave. Which is odd and uncommon especially paying $145 a night. DO NOT STAY HERE!!! I booked a stay the morning of 10/18/21 for the same day. I arrived at 9:30pm after a long day of work and 3.5 hours of driving from Denver. All of the lights were out and it was creepy, desolate and dark outside. No one was at the front desk and all of the lights were off inside as well. I called their number and the after hours answering service said they would call the inn keeper and would tell them to call me. After 20 minutes of waiting, the phone rang at the front desk. I answered it and they told me their was a personal emergency and the employee had left for the night. I told her it would have been nice if they had informed me before I arrived or had a plan in place since I had a reservation. She huffed and puffed and said it wasn't her fault or problem and she had no idea I was coming. I told her I just wanted to go to bed and i guess had to cancel due to their lack of providing me a room. She said "fine, leave" and hung up on me. I drove to the comfort inn in Salida where another person there said THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO THEM THE PREVIOUS WEEKEND! Ridiculously unprofessional and unreliable. DO NOT STAY HERE! I will update with how they respond tomorrow when I request a refund to my credit card. read more

Some of these reviews are merciless! After canvassing the area to find the best deal; Monarch Mountain Lodge was the best value by about 30%. My brother and I stayed 2 nights on a fishing trip and were pleasantly surprised. I was skeptical because of the reviews ( However, Kelly's responses are classic and I want to meet this person) since I hadn't stayed there in years. Beware, the new owner has run this hotel into the ground and is beyond rude. I used to stay here when I was younger, and loved it! We booked hoping to share these memories with our kids. Boy did we make a mistake! We arrived and our rooms were not together as promised....ok not a huge deal we handled it and we're offered a discount on the rooms. That didn't happen they actually charged us $355.91 extra and the owner said it must have been our fault (we had an animal or changed the reservation-which we did not!). Then as the stay went on there was a list of problems: The heater in one room didn't work (it was below freezing AND snowing, the phone cord in our room was cut, the shuttle to the mountain was broken, the restaurant was closed (cool quit last week) and their "snack" area was only candy and chips. They "hot tubs" were at 90 degrees and the heated poll was too cold to use- several guests complained, their game room had 6/8 games only 2 worked. The hot water heater was broken- cold water. The bar and kitchen were "run" by guests because they had no staff. Literally guests were serving themselves and others. The owner when on the phone told me she wasn't going to speak with me unless I used a pleasant and upbeat tone "because I don't have to", she repeatedly told me "I will hang up on you", spoke over me ", hung up on me, and said "maybe you need a minute to take a breathe" "maybe you need to discuss this with someone else who is better with customer service" read more

I will never book another stay at this place. We were just a few miles east of Canon City when we received a call that my dad was not doing well and that we needed to return home asap. I called the Lodge to cancel our reservation and they did so without any issue buy unlike other hotels we stay at alot, instead of just charging us for the first nights stay as the majority of the hotels do, they charged us for the entire stay on our cc. Over $600 for a room we never got to stay in. It's hard enough when you are rushing home due to an emergency call, but then you also lose that much money because you had no choice but to go back home. I definitely understand charging for the fish night as all hotels do for a cancelation, but for the 4 night we weren't even there is absolutely ubserd. NEVER WILL I BOOK THIS PLACE AGAIN FOR THAT REASO ALONE, BUT READING ALL THE OTHER RECENT REVIEWS, I WOULD PROBABLY NOT BOOK ANYWAY AND HAD I HAVE READ THEM AHEAD OF TIME, I WOULD NOT HAVE BOOKED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE. read more

This place was honestly disgusting. When we entered the building, we immediately had reservations but trusted the reviews on Airbnb. Once we got to our hotel room, we were quite shocked. There was a red splatter on the wall. Frankly, it was unsettling. We were confused as to why splattering of any kind was on the wall, let alone red splattering. We lifted up the comforter and found black streaks on the side of the sheets. It seemed to either be dirt or mold. Upon entering the bathroom, there was orange mold in the shower. And finally, the deadbolt on the room did not work. We had two young kids with us. I have never left a hotel before, but this was completely unacceptable as a parent. We left within 15-minutes. I spoke with the receptionist, and they reported the splatter was only tomato juice. I asked for a refund and was told only the manager could grant that. Once the manager arrived I was told only the owner could grant refunds. I left my name and number asking for the owner to call me. I have yet to hear anything. Only the owner of the hotel can issue a refund!? Anyone who owns a business knows this is a sign of fiscal vulnerability, and it shows at the lodge. The Colorado Trail runs nearby. I've spent months at a time on the trail, so I understand when coming off the trail, anything with a roof and hot shower is incredible. However, unless you're coming in off the trail, you'll want to steer clear of this place. Pay an extra $30 and avoid your skin crawling. read more

What a sham! They advertise a shuttle to the mountain, hot tub, pool, sauna, game room ,gift shop and a restaurant. The shuttle is not in service, the hot tubs are broken and look like they haven't run in a long time, the pool water was green, the game room had a pool table with no tips on the pool cues, the sauna was disgusting and looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years. Our room had a thermostat on the wall but there were no heat registers in the room at all - so no heat. We were lucky the evening we were there was not super cold. The customer service was non existent. As it turns out the manager resides in Texas. The whole place screams of neglect. This was a great lodge in its heyday but disappointingly is in disrepair. The room and bed were fine but it was super hot even though the outdoor temperature was 40. The tv service was not working even after following the front desks directions. The breakfast room has a gorgeous view but the free breakfast supplies were gone at 9:30. We asked Do you have them refilled and were told that they were shorthanded and they had a lot of customers but we insisted that they fill the supplies so that we could at least eat something. The hot tub and pool were closed due to maintenance. My suggestion is either stay in Salida or go on to Gunnison. They also do not have handicapped parking and the "wheelchair ramp" is steep and not ADA. read more

Do not patronize this shiesty business! They accused me of stealing (even threatened to call the police on me. Did I mention that I am black, and I wasn't stealing anything!?). The facilities are not anything like what the pictures portray (have you noticed that they are all from a distance? See the REAL pictures I took); they are trying to sell this place as a mountain resort. It is a rundown nasty facility. They charged an additional $800 to my credit card for fees that were unexplained and fraudulent. Our room was gross, they had rat traps visible. I was afraid to look at the bed for fear of finding traces of bedbugs. There were blood stains on my comforter. And garbage was left on the floor in the room from the previous guest. We watched staff stealing money from the registers, everything is grossly overpriced. I could go on and on, but there is limited space for this review. When I spoke to the manager about my issues, she was completely patriotic to the terrible behavior of her staff. I'm not a huge fan. My sons and I stopped one night on the way to Crested Butte at about 8:30 PM. Monarch Pass was closed, and we were STARVING. We ordered the Appetizer Sampler ($12, 4 chicken tenders, onion rings, and 6 mozzerella sticks with marinara and ranch); a Mushroom/Swiss burger ($16), and two Wesstern Burgers ($16, BBQ Sauce, Onion ring, sautéed onions, and cheddar). All burgers come with a choice of side - fried, O-Rings, vegetable, mashers, okra. The chicken tenders were DRY, as were the burgers. Service was slow - and there is no excuse for this because we were one of three tables eating. The bar was busy, but it was almost entirely drinkers. WiFi was nonexistent. Eat in Salida, or hold it to Gunnison. If you're staying there and skiing Monarch...sorry. Food was adequate, but I expected more for $65. read more

Pretty disappointing experience for our family. Planned to spend New Year's at the lodge but ended up leaving a day early. Phone didn't work, thermostat in room didn't work, had no hot water one evening and finding someone at the front desk and/or in the store was spotty. In the end the shuttle from lodge to mountain was broken down and we were depending on that to get us to the mountain. I was told while checking out the manager would be contacted regarding a refund for our last night since we departed early. Never heard back so I called the next day and was told manager was on a call and would call back...nothing. I have a feeling much of this could have been avoided if fully staffed. Regardless, unless we hear from the lodge we will not be back and certainly won't recommend. read more

This was a hidden treasure that I have passed by on many occasions enroute to other places. I stopped in to see about breakfast while waiting for my travel partners to catch up. Chef Carl served me one of the best French Toast, eggs and sausage meals ever! Service was fast and excellent quality, only surpassed by the hometown chat Carl and I were able to have, including local fishing tips! read more

Contacted the owner/manager, Kelly Ritz, only to be personally attacked and belittled. No credit or refund offered. She Stated, "if it was so bad you should have left". Right... at 3am in the middle of the mountains... on a holiday weekend.. come on Kelly, get into reality. Maybe she was right, we would have been better off in a tent city. We are staying at the Monarch Mountain Lodge for 4 nights while my boyfriend bikes the Colorado Trail. We choose the lodge for the location, relative to trailheads. The lodge itself is very outdated and in major need of a facelift. But that's not even the worst part of our stay. Upon checking in, we were notified by the front desk guy that they had a bear in their dumpster area the previous night. He advised us to be cautious, as we have our dogs with us. We appreciated the notification from him. We went out. for the evening, and upon returning at 9:30pm, we drove around back, as we're on the first floor on the end near the exterior door. However, as soon as we were next to the dumpster, we saw a bear inside the dumpster, helping himself to a late night snack!! We drove back to the front of the building, and came in through the lobby. We notified the man at the front desk that there was a bear in the dumpster and he told us he would go "run him off." This is apparently not the first time that this has occurred. The next morning, I went to the front desk and found the same man working there. I asked him about the bear and he said "Oh Boo Boo is harmless. I chase him off all the time." He said chasing off bears isn't that crazy to him because he's been divorced twice. What!? I was absolutely appalled by his lack of concern and the fact that he found it funny! It's very clear why they have a bear problem- their dumpsters are not locked or bear-proof. They are overflowing with trash and it's all over the ground. It's pitch black back there, and there are no signs warning of bears in the area. It seems to me that this is a huge liability for the hotel, and their lack of concern is absolutely disgusting. We will never return to this hotel and will be sure to tell anyone considering it to avoid it at all costs. Unless of course they enjoy bears roaming the property, and a lack of concern for people's safety. read more

I did not like seeing the black mold or spots on ceiling after my shower also our timer did not work in there. I absolutely did not like the fire hazard of an outlet behind the TV and myself having to crawl on the floor and under the table to disconnect and connect plugs... the carpet felt greasy, so gross. To be honest we have stayed in some cheapie motels that felt and were cleaner than this one. We have also stayed in some upscale hotels that didn't  cost this much and were clean. I did take pictures. I did not feel safe or clean even after taking a shower but we were too tired to voice our concerns at the time.  Also, I feel that breakfast should have really been included at that price. The fridge was so small, we actually had to throw food away as it didn't fit. The ONLY good thing was our check in with Dan and he letting us know about the pond behind the lodge , I believe was his name.
