I was in Rowland Heights so we decided to try something different for lunch and went to Mongolian Home Made Pie. Since we had a late lunch on a weekday it was not that hard finding parking and there was no wait to be seated either. As soon as I walked in I smelled goat/lamb, and noticed the pretty paintings on the walls. We ordered the namesake Mongolian Homemade Pies (an order has 3 pieces), cold dish three pieces, and spicy duck blood stewed with beef tripe. The meat pies were delicious with juicy meat, and the appetizer cold dishes were refreshing. However, the duck blood dish contained no duck blood whatsoever. The Chinese name for the dish 毛血旺 literally has blood in the name! The waitress tried to tell us the restaurant does not use pork to be halal as this dish often has pork intestine and pork blood, but I am not sure how that would affect the lack of duck blood. She felt bad so gave us some meat jerky. The bowl was a very large portion so I packed it to-go to make some adjustments at home. The complimentary lamb broth was tasty though undersalted (you can add salt to taste from the sauce bar). I also would have liked the soup to be hotter in temperature. You are also served complimentary milk tea or yogurt upon being seated, so we had one of each. The milk tea was too salty for my tastes but the yogurt was tasty. Came here with a group of friends on a Sunday for lunch. First visit. This place provides authentic Inner Mongolian cuisine which is famous for its beef and lamb dishes. Relatively large dining area with the capacity to combine tables to accommodate bigger parties. We ordered the following: The lamb soup, great flavor, and the soup base is refillable, the meat is tender. The lamb chop, it was ok. Shao Mai, I probably won't order this again. Its twin dish at the Dim Sum restaurant has more flavor, this one is kind of flat. The meat pancake, it was ok. The spicy beef tripe soup, I don't care for internal organs so I skipped it. The yogurt was the best part, soft and smooth. Some of us actually asked for second serving. The first serving is free. The free edamame beans are a great appetizer. We visited Mongolian Home-Made Pie for lunch over the weekend and were pleasantly surprised that we were seated right away without any wait. I really liked the restaurant's simple and clean interior design, especially the Mongolian grassland wall art and the portrait of Genghis Khan, which gave the place a unique atmosphere. We ordered several dishes and enjoyed all of them. The Mongolian Homemade Beef Pie (3 pieces, $14.99) was very tasty -- the minced beef filling was incredibly juicy and flavorful. The Salt and Pepper Lamb Chops ($33.88) were the highlight of the meal and definitely a must-try! The skin was crispy while the meat stayed tender and juicy. The Shredded Cabbage ($15.99) was also good and the Cold Dish Appetizer Trio -- cucumber, seaweed, and shredded potato salad ($7.99) -- was refreshing. Hate to bring this up every single time I review a business in this plaza, but parking can be horrible and extremely fisted, especially since there's so many restaurants and other businesses in the same plaza. If your car is garbage and has zero valuables, you can park across the street and walk over. The 2 different instances that I've eaten here, the place is pretty popping. It's quite a large restaurant with a lot of seating and there's lots of customers coming and in and out, some picking up to go orders, others in the waiting area, so you know that the food they have is popular and unique. PRO-TIP: For dine in, you get unlimited lamb soup and all of the fixings for that soup are complimentary too (cilantro, pepper, cumin, etc), so make sure to eat up! For our visit, we've had the complimentary lamb soup, which is a must since it's technically AYCE, the cold veggie appetizers (great if it's a hot summer day), the Mongolian hand made pies (they're like huge flattened dumplings - deliciously seasoned meat and juicy as well). Those are great. I've had 2 dishes here I am not the biggest fan of. The offal soup since I cannot easily eat the meat, so I think I just mostly drank the soup and ate around it, sort of a waste since I could have just gotten the free soup, and the bull testicles and penis. I cannot stand the chewy texture of food, so this was immediate miss for me, even when I didn't know what it was and when I took it home, no one in my family could eat it since it had become hard and chewy and difficult to eat at that point. Love the complimentary milk candy they give at the end though. Wish that can be more easily accessible to buy in markets. read more

This will be my first and last time to this place. I believe I have been here once before but it may have been under another management. First of all the workers seem to all wear the same latex disposable blue gloves to handle everything, from bringing food out , to cleaning. The two staff seemed to be nice but it took a while for us to get service. Seems like they were vacuuming or busy refilling other things. The cold plate they had was decent, and they had a sauce bar where you can get soup if you dine in. We ordered a soup that seems to only be enough for 4 people. The biggest disappointment was the shumai. They actually look huge and good but you can tell they were frozen. I should have known as I took my first bite, there was raw pork inside. They took back the steamer and tried to heat it up again. I thought they would have just made a new batch. After steaming it again, I took another bite and again the pork was still raw in the middle. You cannot consume raw pork. They eventually changed the dish but only after trying to explain that it wasn't raw and that it was just that color. I know what raw pork looks like, and when I took the two bites, they are not supposed to be soft and cold. I didn't want to start my first review of the year like this, but I had a stomach ache and did not feel well the next day. I'm glad I did not have to go to urgent care. Mandatory 15% tip for ZERO service? And they can't refill some radish? I really wanted to like this place because the concept of Mongolian pies is unique in Rowland Heights. The food itself is decent--the pies are juicy and the lamb soup is hearty on a cold day. However, the dining experience left such a bad taste in my mouth that I can't ignore it. Here's the thing: 1. The "Service" Fee (aka The Silent Robbery): They automatically add a 15% tip to the bill. Normally, I'm okay with this for good service, but here, the service was practically non-existent. We had to flag someone down just to get a water refill. It feels less like a tip and more like a mandatory surcharge that goes straight to the owner while the staff couldn't care less. 2. The "No Refill" Rule: We ordered the Lamb Radish Soup. The broth was good, but when we politely asked if we could have a tiny bit more of the radish (not even the meat, just the veggie) from the kitchen, we got a straight-up "No." For a place charging premium prices and forcing a tip, being told you can't have a few cents worth of radish is just insulting. In short: The food is 3 stars, but the principle of the thing (bad service + forced tip + stingy refill policy) drops it to a 1. If you want to try the pie, do yourself a favor and order takeout to avoid the mandatory service charge that doesn't reflect any actual service. read more

The grilled lamb ribs were perfectly seasoned, tender, and some of the best Asian style lamb ribs I've had. This is a good Mongolian Restaurant. It's pretty packed. As soon as you walked in, you were offered the choice of Mongolian Milk Tea or Yogurt to drink, as a sample of course. My party and I have one each and share. I like the milk tea, which is perfectly salted. Ordered three items and the waitress says it is enough for both of us. We had left over to take home. The server was super nice and helpful in guiding our order. We were going to order four dishes for two and she let us know that that would be way too much food. We arrived at 5:30pm on a Saturday and were seated right away and offered the complimentary milk tea (salty) or yogurt. Signs let you know that a service charge is included and tip not expected. Interior seems new and is clean and modern. Plenty of space for large parties of six or more. The lamb shumai taste more like lamb versions of xiao long bao-- juicy and bursting with broth. Eat them while they're hot (before the broth congeals)! We like the paper thin wrapper which seems to be made from a different type of dough. The filling flavor is similar to the filling in the Mongolian pie. The grilled version of the lamb is definitely the healthier version and taste, but every table seems to get the Mongolian spiced desert-style (which seems to come with fries), so we'll be back to try that. Oh my Lamb! Wow. I was stuffed! If you decide to come here, the bigger the group, the better as there are so many dishes to try and the serving sizes are generous! This place gets packed! There are no reservations, but the wait is worth it. The restaurant is well lit, clean and there is a painting of a green mountain side which my guess is supposed to be Mongolia, and the service is pretty quick. There is a free serve your own soup station in the back of the restaurant and the lamb soup does not disappoint! The staff also provide Mongolian milk tea, which was my first time trying and it is a combo of saltiness and sweetness. Our part was 8 people and we may have over ordered but it was worth it. The dishes we got were salt/pepper lamb chops, lamb stew, meat pie, spicy duck blood and tripe stew, some veggies, and fried spice chicken. The lamb cooked in various ways was amazing! Every dish was delicious and had just the right amount of spice to it! We have a very high expectation for this restaurant in Rowland Highs but we're quite disappointed after the first visit. We tried the lamb offal soup that was supposed to be the best in a restaurant for lamb. However it doesn't taste very good. The color is greenish as you can see, and the taste is surprisingly gamy. I have to say this is the most gamy lamb soup I've ever had, and I grew up eating a lot of lamb. NOT RECOMMENDED! Concerning the space and their services, I would say they're all decent. Stopped by Mongolian Home Made Pie and loved it! I've never had real Mongolian food, so I was curious how it would be. My only exposure to "Mongolian" food up to now were those places you see at the mall where you pick the meats and veggies in a bowl and they fry it on the giant round grill with noodles. The Salt and Pepper Lamb was crispy, flavorful, and just perfect. Their homemade pies were also very good. They were like giant soup dumplings with similar flavor also. Plus, the Mongolian yogurt with fresh strawberries was a refreshing end to the meal. Menu has a wide selection of dishes. We like lamb so we tried the "desert style" roasted lamb chops. They came with fries and crispy topping which had nice crispy texture. We requested non-spicy and I kinda regret that because there seemed to be something missing. The meat will give your teeth a workout, but that's exactly the way it's supposed to be! I saw there were roasted beef ribs on the menu too and saw other patrons ordered that and they looked delicious too. The lamb soup was my favorite. It was not gamey yet has strong lamb flavor. You have to add the salt and spices on your own but it gives you option to customize the taste. They have a sauce bar with great selection of sauces and spices to choose from. They also provide complementary lamb soup which was just as good. If you're looking for some authentic Mongolian food this is a great choice! This is a new restaurant opened in the ever busy Mandarin Plaza directly next door to Baekjeong KBBQ. This place is not very big overall so it gets packed! They do take RSVP, if they happen to answer the phone. This place is super short staffed so the service and wait times are pretty atrocious. We came for super early dinner on new years eve right when they opened to guarantee a table for our large party of 12. They only have 4-5 total large party tables available with the rest being booth sized tables that seat a max of 6 comfortably. The menu is fairly small with two pages. They only speak mandarin/mongolian here so if you only speak english you likely will struggle or be ignored. Bring a native Chinese speaker friend to help you order! Note if you want faster service you need to order any of the signature items and stay away from non popular items. Part of our group was vegetarian and any veggie stir fry dish took literally twice the time to get served as the meat dishes. The best items are definitely the any of the lamb dishes. The items 1-10 are all of their signature hot pot dishes. All are served in a beautiful Mongolian style painted pot. We got the signature lamb pot and it was delicious! Note traditional Mongolian food is cooked very basic and bland! You literally self season with salt, sugar, or seasoning yourself available at the sauce bar! This is where you also have unlimited lamb soup refills for your hotpot or egg drop soup available. The other signature items worth mentioning are the Cumin Lamb shanks. If you love traditional Chinese style Cumin bbq flavor profiles this is totally your jam! The lamb chops are fried to perfect tender perfection and seasoned with cumin, japapinos, and stir fried with peppers and red chilis. Yes its a spicy and savory dish but so delicious. The Mongolian Homemade pies with ground beef inside are just OK but another signature item. It's like a plain onion pancake texture with ground beef. It's neither crispy nor flavorful and like a rice substitute for your carbs. Note the service here again is ATROCIOUS so be warned! It's literally self service even for your leftover togo boxes. There's a stack in the corner to get yourself. Utensils, napkins, bowls are all self serve at the sauce bar area. You'll need to be aggressive to waive down the limited waitresses for any water or even to get the check. Overall a good dining experience for medium to large groups. Not recommended for small groups like 2-3 people since portion sizes are huge unless you have a huge appetite. read more
