After about two years of riding, I felt confident on my bike, but I wanted to get better and unlearn any bad habits I picked up. A friend of mine used to be an instructor at Monkey Moto School and highly recommended them. I scheduled one lesson with Evan and am so glad I did. He is a great teacher. He was able to explain the theory behind things, and when I had trouble understanding some techniques, he was able to explain it differently until it clicked. One of the lessons consisted of riding twisty roads along highway one and the second was working on Moto gymkhana style exercises (low speed tight turning maneuvers). Just finished my 3rd lesson with Evan, one of the instructors and I can honestly say I'm a much better, more confident rider thanks to his help. I got my license 2 years ago but didn't ride at all since then. Moved here and wanted to start riding full time, but knew I was not ready. Called the school and got a midweek lesson right away. Loved it so I booked 3 more. I ended up not needing the 4th because they were so good at getting you up to speed in the short time you spend with them. Even if you take the safety course I highly recommend this type of instruction so you can take your time and really work on the techniques you are having problems with. Being new to the area I also got a ton of useful advice about shops to go to, things to be careful of when parking your bike downtown and advice on what bike might be right for me to purchase. For the last class Evan took me out for a ride on the streets of SF to work out traffic flow and anticipating other cars. It was super fun and extremely insightful - definitely the highlight of the whole class series. Once I get a bike and put some more hours in I will likely be back for some more advanced instruction. Evan is an amazing and patient motorcycle instructor! I had a previous bad experience with motorcycles (and stick shift cars) and was very nervous to learn how to ride a geared bike. I am 5'4'' 120lbs, and was also scared of how heavy the motorcycle would be and what would happen if I lost control. I purchased the smart start package after speaking to Evan over the phone, and after one lesson, I was able to do figure eights in the parking lot in first gear, grinning ear to ear. By the end of the second lesson, I could do emergency stops, switch freely between first and second gears, and take controlled corners. Evan was patient and methodical with me, and he taught one thing at a time without overwhelming me with information, but at the same time answered every question I had very thoroughly. I've had roughly 3 years of dirt bike experience throughout my life but had not touched a bike in 3 years. I have been thinking about about buying my first bike in a few months and knew I needed lessons before applying for a permit. Upon contacting monkey moto school they replied within a day and I was able to set up 2 lessons back to back. I would say that probably wasn't the smartest on my end as my hands ended up being a little sore. During the first lesson with Brian it started out with the basics of ridding which was a bit slow but I knew it was necessary as we both needed to asses my ridding capabilities. Brain talked very fast although I liked and appreciated it as I like learn at a fast pace, his instructions were easy to understand and focuses on learning the skill first before moving onto the next step. At the end of the lessons, Brian let me ride around the parking lot practicing the skills I learned for fun. This was the best part haha. Overall after taking lessons through sf monkey moto school I left feeling more confident in my driving skills and am very excited to get my first bike. I most likely will come for another lesson if I find myself struggling or lacking confidence in a certain skill/maneuvers. I finished the CMSP course a couple of weeks ago as a complete beginner. I left the course with some skills but certainly without the needed confidence to get on a bike by myself. I found Monkey Moto doing a search for some one on one coaching I felt I really needed and contacted them for lessons. Reached out to Monkey Moto School for help with a refresher lesson after taking a ~7yr break from riding. I was referred to Monkey Moto by a colleague. I took a few lessons with Evan before taking the MTC course. Learning at Monkey Moto was one on one rather than one to many like the MTC. I appreciated the time Evan took to understand my skill level and goals. It wasn't just about getting the basics down, which we nailed, but it was about all the other questions you can ask an instructor who is dedicated to you. Evan is simply amazing at what he does. The guy is one of those truly rare, natural teachers. I've been riding for a few years since learning and getting my M1 through an MSF course, but I started and stayed on a Rebel 450 for most of those years. When I felt ready, I switched to a much bigger (for my frame!) and sportier SV650S, but found that I had to relearn a lot of what I *thought* I already knew for my new and more challenging ride. I felt great going at speed, but my confidence in low-speed high-volume traffic, breaking and moving at low speeds was shot - I kept worrying I was going to drop the damn thing, and of course, I eventually did. Argh! So, based on the great reviews in Yelp-land and several personal mechanic recommendations, I contacted Evan to help bring me up to speed for better riding on my new bigger beastie. I'm so glad I did. It only took three hours for my confidence and abilities to move leaps and bounds ahead. He corrected several bad habits (some of which I learned in MSF! That's not to knock them though - MSF was a great place to begin and get my M1) and taught me a lot more about the physics of weight and movement on my bike. He's really encouraging and patient, but also critical when you need it, and he challenged me without pushing me to frustration. I was mentally and physically pooped by the end of the class, but in that good way! As a side note, Evan's kind of hilarious. Monkey Moto is aptly named, the guy is full of energy. So i was originally going to take a lesson with Evan after taking my motorcycle training course. However, I missed my first motorcycle class, and Evan suggested we work together anyway. I was nervous, because I assumed there was no way I was going to get comfortable very quickly. From the very first minute, Evan was super professional. He made me feel comfortable, he gave amazing directions, and walked me through everything exceptionally well. I started never having operating anything on a motorcycle, and ended up riding in the street, and with a passenger. I was floored at how amazing this lesson was. It's obvious that Evan has a real love for riding, and a true respect for the physical and mental aspects that are required to feel comfortable and remain safe. He teaches with such care, that easing into those lessons, and absorbing those techniques is exceptionally easy. He's amazing, and worth threee times what you pay him. If you're thinking about taking a lesson from him, just go. You'll love him, and you will learn a ton. Update.., just to add, I noticed there were a couple out of place reviews here that were low. I reserached alot before picking Moto Monkey. I cannot speak to any other instructor in SF, and have no feedback about any other trainor or school. I did flag a couple of the low reviews, because they seemed very suspect, especially since they appear within a day of eachother, and all of them promote another local teacher heavily. Short version: Evan is the best, all the good reviews are true. Look no further, you won't be disappointed. Long version: I originally got my M1 16 years ago, but haven't ridden in over 10 years, I decided to get back in the saddle so to speak and needed a serious refresher. I had 1 lesson with Evan and not only did I recover my previous skill set but I learned a ton of new useful/fun skills. His teaching method really worked for me. He built on the skills I easily and quickly understood and didn't spend too much time on the ones that were a little harder for me. In the end he covered them all but the way he teaches is flexible, so I was able to learn in a natural progression. He was patient and easy to understand, I felt safe and confidant the entire time. After 3 hours I feel like I could ride safely through San Francisco traffic and have a great time riding through the hills (but I totally want to go back for another lesson that could make those mountain squiggles even more fun). A little side note - I took a class way-back-when I originally got my license, my instructor was not pleased to be teaching a woman and he seemed pretty darn sure I was going to kill myself. I had the opposite experience with Evan, not only is he a great teacher for learning to ride safely and not feel like a rolling death machine, but he made me feel like riding should be... f-ing awesome. read more

I admit it: I've been lazy. After getting my M1 license two years ago, I was finally getting around to a motorcycle purchase this summer. Problem was, I hadn't been on a bike since the MSF course... And there was no way I was going to jump straight on a newly purchased ride without some refresher work. Enter Evan at Monkey Moto. Evan turned out to be the real deal: I think in part because he's also a personal trainer when he's not teaching riding, he approached our lesson with an incredibly positive and personable attitude that was all about not only teaching what I'd need to do to get comfortable immediately, but also long-term lessons to think about down the line. If I started the lessons as a 2, I ended four hours later as at least a 7 in terms of confidence and beginning ability. Personal lessons can be totally unhelpful if you're learning from a jaded moto jockey who thinks because they know how to ride, they know how to teach. The two skills are not related -- believe me. Evan definitely knows how to watch your riding and give you careful feedback on how to improve. There were at least three occasions where after doing an exercise, some quick feedback from Evan watching me led to an "aha!" moment that made me instantly improve. I wish I could say as much about, say, my girlfriend correcting me on my cooking skills. The lesson setup was pain-free, too: after initially conversing over email, our first lesson was rained out and we texted back and forth to figure a new date. He made room in his schedule (which during the summer riding season is understandably busy), and we met down in a parking lot near the ball park with his 250cc learning bike. Four hours later, I was alternately balancing at a crawl pace on a weave course, and doing braking and downshifting exercises from 40 MPH. read more

I came to SF last year from Seattle with brand new riding skills and my SV650. The steep hills and crazy city traffic were pretty intimidating and I let my bike collect dust in the garage for months and my new riding skills got rusty, too. A couple of rides with Evan totally turned that around for me. He was very encouraging and patient and helped me to let go of any lingering fear. The slow speed skills practice was so valuable (I was splitting lanes on the 80 soon after!). The open road and city driving practice was great also. I only bought my scooter to avoid the bus. I hate the bus. But...it turns out, riding a scooter is nothing like...anything I'd done before so my nerves were getting the best of me and I was almost ready to throw in the scooter-towel after spending so much money on a helmet/scooter/insurance/permit/jacket/title/registration. The best thing about my lesson was really how Evan broke down the physics of riding. Shoulders, back, chest, hips. He went over the weight distribution of riding, turning, breaking that weren't intuitive. There's this really handy trick where you throttle and break at the same time - I swear it's going to save me some day. I've got to tell you, motorcycling is fun-- scary as shit at times, but fun as all hell. I had just taken the MSF's Basic Riding Course and gotten my certification when I picked myself up a motorcycle. Thing is, practical real-world motorcycles tend to be several times more powerful than the things you tinker around on in class. That being said, for a while it was all I could do just to have a safe commute to work in the mornings. After even the first lesson with Evan though, I definitely felt safer getting around town on my bike. If you hadn't noticed, San Francisco's pretty hilly, and for a novice motorcyclist who hadn't even been on a bicycle since elementary school, this is pretty damn intimidating. Evan was able to break down a lot of incredibly useful skills and knowledge into pieces that were both useful and practical immediately. Friends of mine purchased a lesson with Monkey Moto School for my birthday. After an accident in June that put me in the hospital, I was back out an riding but my confidence was a little lower than it used to be. After working out a schedule with Evan to meet, we hit the road and headed to a local parking lot for some basics and great learning. We spent time covering things you tend to forget about, but are so important. Learning to shift, manage the clutch and throttle and brakes at the same time and proper shifting of weight on the bike, I was a bit overwhelmed, but Evan's style is so caring and he is so easy to hear and follow, I was learning. We then hit the road for the Marin area, showing me good use of the skills just learned and working on hip shifting and learning to "dance" with my sport bike. I was again, feeling challenged and overwhelmed but Evan's calm and assuring style and positive coaching really made me feel like I could do it and I was doing it. Evan is an amazing teacher. He is cute and fun to learn from with this style and his engagement. He s clearly passionate about the motorcycle riding he teaches and I will certainly be signing up for more classes. I had a couple lessons with Evan over the last couple weekends. I was dropping my bike a lot trying to practice U turns on my own when I decide to give Monkey Moto School a go. I didn't want to ride my own bike down the highway from Sunnyvale but he had a very similar one that he brought for me to work with. It was super helpful and it really boosted my confidence and got me over my phobia of right turns. He also helped me work on stopping and balancing, shifting smoother, some other things i can't remember off the top of my head, and demystified rev matching for me :) It was a fun couple of lessons and I'll definitely go back for a third. One lesson so far and feeling great! So glad I found Evan. And now, the long version... In 2009, I started dreaming about getting a Piaggio MP3 scooter, which has a 500cc motor. It's a beast. With zero riding experience, I took the 2-day moto course, where I learned on a Honda Rebel. Somehow passed and got my moto license. That was May 2009. Had no money for a bike. Finally had money for my dream MP3 in March 2013. Needless to say, I lost some momentum from my only riding experience being a 2-day class 4 years before. :) I'm back to super noob, and the MP3 is a 550 pound bike with a heavy front. And I'm a 5' 4" woman, though in some of the best shape of my life. My boyfriend drove my bike to AT&T parking lot... where NONE of that 2-day class came back to me. I fell twice just trying to walk the bike to turn around and try driving straight again. Unnerved, I decided hey, I own this bike. I will take the time to get proper training so I can be safe, prepared, and confident. Whatever it takes. No rush. Evan is the moto Zen Master. He makes my bike do things I didn't know it can do, but am glad to know it can. He goes beyond technique to also make sure your posture, state of mind, and gear are all right. And my gear is also all wrong... I got a bunch of bike gear hand-me-downs that don't fit well, and Evan's helping bring to light how much poorly-fitting or uncomfy gear can really mess with you. I will definitely take a bunch more lessons with him. No idea how many I'll need. I bet most people only need two or three, but I may need more. And I'll be taking those with Evan. I was a bit skeptic in the beginning before I took the lesson as I wasn't sure of what I was gonna get for my money. All I was counting on was about half a dozen 5 star reviews on yelp. The lesson turned out to be more than my money's worth! Evan's not just a skilled rider, but also has the necessary teaching skills that adjust to your skill level. Earlier this year I got my M1 license after taking the standard MSF course. That course was fine, but coming out of it, I still lacked a lot of confidence needed to maneuver through the controlled chaos that is San Francisco urban traffic. After fiddling around on my own bike with short jaunts for a few months, I decided I needed more work with a professional to help my anxiety and focus on better control. Wow, what a difference a day makes! Evan was extremely personable, patient, and calm, and really helped reiterate a lot of things I missed during my initial MSF course, especially the finer details of clutch control and how it leads to smoother, stronger rides. Working one-on-one leads to much better direct feedback so over the course of a few hours I improved rapidly in confidence and control. We worked with my own bike ('06 Rebel 250) and he really helped me see what it is I should be feeling with it specifically and even showed me a couple tips on how best to handle and maintain it. By the time we were done, I was able to ride out comfortably into Mission District traffic and head home safely. tl;dr: Highly recommended, even if you've already taken the MSF course. Evan came to my house on his bike, then on my bike with me on the pillion, drove to a big empty parking lot on a pier near AT&T Park where Evan went over the basics, including relaxation, posture, clutch control, low speed maneuvering, cornering, shifting, etc., etc. Later we adjourned to a quiet location on Potrero Hill to practice hill starts. All this practice greatly improved my skills and awareness, but just as important, riding with Evan in traffic really raised my confidence level. One of my childhood dreams has been to own and operate my own motorcycle. This being said I purchased a motorcycle (1985 Honda Shadow 500cc) in the Fall of 2015. After this purchase I researched which motorcycle schools in the Bay Area would be the right fit for me. I chose Monkey Moto School. My reasoning for choosing Monkey Moto School opposed to other motorcycle schools was, it offered one on one private lessons which I felt more comfortable with due to the fact that I was a bit new to riding a motorcycle. Evan was very responsive to my phone call and I was able to chat with him that day. Within two weeks I had my first lesson. During my lessons, Evan was extremely thorough when teaching me the proper safety procedures and skill sets. Each lesson we went through a checklist, which I still go over now when riding my bike. In addition to teaching me a solid skill set Evan taught me how to think like a motorcyclist which, I feel is one of the most important factors to riding safely in the city. During the lessons, I saw how passionate Evan was about riding which really inspired me. I felt extremely comfortable learning from Evan and was able to talk with him about concerns and expectations I had in regards to the lessons. Now I have my permit and can not believe how instinctual riding on the road came to me. I know this is because of my lessons with Monkey Moto School. Evan is wonderful teacher who created a solid foundation for me to ride on the roads of San Francisco in a safe confident manner. If you are looking for individualized lessons, riding/ thinking like a motorcyclist and a teacher that has a real passion for riding you have found the right school.
