Monkeypod Mai Tai with Lilikoi Foam
    Ciera B.

I absolutely love this restaurant!! The staff were very friendly, knowledgeable, kind and gave us many options on what they specials were and what was and what wasn't available that evening. We got the Mai tai which is different from anywhere I have ever had one before and that lilikoi foam made it! So flavorful! My parents got the fish tacos and they really enjoyed them. I got the fresh fish and lobster pasta and it was the best seafood pasta I have ever had! The fish to the lobster was cooked to perfection and not overcooked one bit!! The pasta was light and so was the sauce! It did not feel heavy at all! I would love to come back and try more items from the menu! This is a must when in Maui!!

Monkeypod was a nice spot for a sunset dinner with my parents! I wouldn't say the food is anything to rave about, but the views, drinks, and happy hour make it worth checking out. They have a great happy hour from 3-5 PM, but it gets PACKED, so definitely get there early. Parking was easy, just make sure you validate--they offer 2-hour validation. Service was quick once we checked in. What we got: After Midnight - 8/10 Very tasty gin cocktail! Definitely on the fruitier side, but refreshing and easy to drink. Hopono Potion - 7/10 Tequila-based drink that honestly reminded me of an elevated Paloma. Solid, but nothing too crazy. Fries - 8/10 Really tasty fries, but the aioli sauce was the star here. So good! Truffle Oil & Mushroom Pizza - 9/10 Probably my favorite thing on the happy hour menu. You can really taste the truffle oil, and the mushroom pairs perfectly with it. Would definitely order again. Chicken Wings - 6/10 Pretty unique! Definitely on the saltier side and comes with a yogurt-feta dipping sauce. Interesting combination, but I think the wings could be better. Moroccan Spiced Lamb - 7/10 Not too shabby! The spices blended together nicely, but it wasn't one of the standout dishes for me. Overall, I'd come back more for the sunset views, drinks, and happy hour than the food.

We've known about Monkeypod Kitchen for years but only now had a chance to give it a try shortly after arriving on Maui. We came a little early and got a great table with no problem along the railing with a view of the ocean. Their happy hour only lasts 90 minutes, but we were here at the right time and were able to order a slightly discounted Kalua pork and pineapple pizza as well as a discounted mai tai, which they are famous for--not because it is the best mai tai around, but because it is unique, with its pineapple foam on top. I agree with this and really enjoyed it. It doesn't taste weak, but it is not super strong. I drank the whole thing and barely got any buzz out of it, but I really enjoyed it. The pizza--which normally includes kalua pork, macnut pesto, roasted pineapple, jalapeño, and green onion--was really good (though we ordered it without the jalapeño). Service was friendly enough and not slow, even though the place certainly had its share of customers. Prices aren't super cheap but nothing in Whalers Village is. We enjoyed our experience here and would come again.

Outstanding mai tais! Must have if you're close by. Also the macadamia nut crusted mahi mahi is well worth $55!! Service is very good and the ambiance is great: I highly recommend! I love this place 10 out of 10

We enjoy Monkeypod Kitchen first for their signature Mai Tai, and then for their food. We are sure to visit at least twice on every Hawaiian vacation. The restaurant is open and airy...with plenty of room at the bar or to sit. Of course, my first order is the Mai Tai. They are not too sweet but love the ogreat foam! The staff is always helpful and stopped by several time to make sure we were doing well. I had the Kauai Shrimp & Hamakua Mushroom Potstickers which were delicious! Careful for the hot sauce placed off of the food - it is hot! My wife had the Fresh Caught Fish Tacos - the are delicious as well! Great place to stop in - can't wait until the next time.

The fries always come out like room temp, never really hot ! Love that they are house cut but I would like them hot . The tacos , again the fish was room temp, is prefer my raw fish a little on the colder side , flavor was good

After hearing so much about Monkeypod, I left feeling it didn't quite live up to the hype. The ahi tuna tacos were the standout of the meal--fresh, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. Unfortunately, the wood-fired pizza was just mediocre and didn't stand out. The Caesar salad was pretty basic and lacked the flavor I was expecting. On the bright side, the pie for dessert was amazing and ended the meal on a high note. Overall, there are a few excellent dishes here, but based on this visit, I don't think it lives up to all the buzz.

Well what a nice place on the road to Lahaina . food was outstanding and the atmosphere was great; and what a view right on beach front. service was outstanding. I ordered the Maui Cattle company cheeseburger. It was awesome, it had sauté onions and fontina cheese with a little kimchi. All I can say is Wow. I also ordered French fries with garlic sauce, also great. My wife ordered waipoli Organic green mixed greens with organic beets, bacon, Maui onions and an orange ginger vinaigrette. All she kept saying is "this is really good". So if you're driving thru Maui on hwy 30 stop by. they have shops and the view is amazing.. I posted some pictures check it out u won't regret it.

We had a phenomenal time at Monkeypod as a group of 8. We were not able to make a reservation because of how large our group was, but they are very accommodating as they seated a group of 12 right before us. They allow you to get drinks at the bar if you have to wait and they seated us within a reasonable amount of time for how crowded they were. Our server was wonderful. She was knowledgeable, took her time, and chatted with us throughout dinner (we are a chatty group haha). The food was incredible. Everything tasted fresh and was well presented. Drinks were strong and tasted great. Their famous mai tai's were a hit with our group. We were met with above and beyond service and will definitely be visiting again.

Great dinner! Suggest to come early, as the crowd becomes sizeable after 5:30ish, even mid-week. They have a digital waiting line, though, so you can browse the shops before your table is ready (must check in at the desk first). Our family had the fish and chips (husband, who said they were better than at Hula Grill), avocado and cucumber salad and poke tacos (me, both were satisfying), and noodles with butter (my kid, who are the whole bowl). I also had a Mai Tai which was enjoyable, the lilikoi foam in particular. We sat inside, and there was a very nice breeze through the restaurant so it didn't get too hot, and we weren't in the evening sun. Service was efficient and quick!

For years, we've been coming to grab a bite at Monkeypod Kaanapali when we're up in the area. Although we've haven't been here for some time, the restaurant seems to have faltered a bit in food quality and food prep. Of course we understand that operation costs have increased, yet the prices were a bit steep for what one receives. Location, location, location. The Ahi Tuna Tacos had a very minimal amount of ahi on top of a large quantity of cabbage tucked into the small wonton shell. The ginger was missing and the shoyu wasn't noticeable at all. The Lobster Deviled Eggs were well prepared with plenty of creamy egg filling, but the very small sliver of lobster topping each of the four egg white halves addded zero flavor. The lobster meat was used more as a decoration than a main ingredient. The total flavor of the rich, velvety texture of the filing was excellent, but again, the slivers of lobster added zero flavor. Pete's Fish & Chips was quite delectable with the daily catch of today's offering using mahi-mahi fish. The tempura style coating was a bit flat in taste and crunch, but overall the fish and coating was not greasy and was enjoyable. The fries served with the fish were quite limp, but had a good flavor. The pizza oven, however, was out of operation waiting for a part. The service from Zachary was spot on. He was very friendly, and attentive during our meal, but was not intrusive. It was quite warm inside the restaurant, so we sat on the outer patio area, which still allowed us to enjoy the live music, which plays daily between 11am to 9pm. The restaurant is usually loud and quite busy.

When we come to visit Maui, this is our go to for Mai tai and lunch. This Monkeypod is located in the Whaler's Village. You can do a little shopping and stop by here for lunch. They have a parking garage for Whaler's village. You can get a validation from the restaurant when you dine here. All the times I have visited, the food is pretty good. I really like there poke tacos. It's a yummy little appetizer. The poke is fresh and has good flavor. Their fish and chips are always good. That is always fried to crispy outside and the fish is cooked just right. The fish has good flavor and the fries are pretty good, too. I do like their fish sandwich. They are known for their Mai Tai drinks. My husband always orders one when we are here. LOL. You can't go wrong dining here. The owners are the people who own Merriman's. That place is good too. They are doing it right at both restaurants.

Monkeypod Kitchen Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Monkeypod Kitchen

    Does the restaurant take reservations?

I don't think they take reservations.

Do they charge GET tax and a Kitchen tax on top of the total food prices? If so, how much do they charge?

They charged the usual Hawaii tax, as other restaurants do. And then there was an extra charge for "kitchen staff" added to the bill, which was unique to this restaurant. Plus we also tipped the server 20 percent, as usual. We just found that…

Do they have gluten free options?

There are limited options but the fish tacos with GF are good. The staff is knowledgeable about GF options.

    Any recommendations for Vegan options?

Is Happy Hour only served in the bar area? How early should I get there for HH?

Happy Hour is served in the restaurant also! Hard to say how early because it depends on how busy it is. Last May we were seated with 5 minutes left and I just ordered two Mai Tais for myself :-).

    Are you wheelchair accessible?

    Yes, easy for wheelchairs

How far in advance do you accept reservation for both locations on Maui?

They do not take reservations but I recommend putting in your name and walking around the shopping area during your waiting time and you won't even notice you waited!

What's the difference between this place vs Monkeypod kitchen by Merriman?

This is the same family of restaurants. Head Chef runs both locations and is often in the Wailea location in the afternoon, then the Westside location in the evening or vice versa.

Happy hour here? What times and reviews?

3-5 pm. The mai tais were amazing. They have foam on top of LiLikoi (passion fruit) and they were the best Mai Tais I've ever had (only $10 each). We had a pizza for $10 too – (kalua pork, macnut pesto, roasted pineapple, jalapeño, green onion),…

For those have dined at this restaurant recently. Do they take reservations by phone? They are no longer excepting reservations by OpenTable. If not, how long are the waits in the morning, afternoon and dinner?

They do not take reservations. First come, first served. We went 3 times on this trip to Maui!! We would go just before happy hour starts, and once we waited about 15 min., the other 2 times we didn't wait at all!!! Might be a bit early for dinner,…

    Can you get take out?

    Yes.

    Do they take reservations now?

We're you able to make reservations? No longer available on open table. Did you call?

Do I make a reservation by calling the restaurant directly? Open table or? Thank you

They have more availability if you call direct.

    Do they take reservations?

    They don't take reservations anymore.

    Do you have Outdoor dining?

    yes!

    Is this restaurant open yet?

    They are opening today 11/19/20

    Is this restaurant open yet?

    Unfortunately, they are not.

What is the name Of the general manager? Had dinner Wednesday night and My husband had a very disturbing night after dinner.
