Our review for the evening is mixed. Ceviche, clam chowder and Maui Mule, we give a thumbs up. The fish and chips at $28 was so salty that my spouse could barely eat one of the two pieces. The Dark and Stormy, which I love at other places, was actually horrible. I asked if the drink could be replaced. I said I would rather have the mule unless the Dark and Stormy could be made right. The drink just came back the same on the second try. I didn't drink it. So, all in all, $40 of the $85 bill down the drain per se. If you pick the right things, you might get lucky. read more

My husband and our friends came here one evening for dinner and it did not disappoint!!! Upon walking in, we were greeted immediately and were seated outdoors in about 5 minutes! IT WAS BEAUTIFUL outside with plentiful seating and a perfect view of the sunset on the beach. I ordered the fish and chips, my husband ordered the hot booty ruben, our friends ordered the ribs and chicken wings. For an appetizer, we got the nachos and man, did it hit the spot! You know how sometimes when you order nachos and they come out soggy? This didn't, it was nice and crunchy and after a beach day, it was just right with the beans, pico, jalapenos, and sour cream. The fish and chips were delicious- the fish was nicely battered with a THICK chunk of fish, not skimpy at all and the ribs were nice and juicy and fell off the bones!! Our favorite was the hot booty ruben sandwich- full of flavor, juicy meat along with the tartness of the sauerkraut! Our least favorite were the chicken wings, it wasn't as juicy as we hoped it was going to be but it was a chunky and at least got us the protein we needed. It's wonderful to see more businesses at Maui. This restaurant opened about a year and a half ago. My hubby ordered a pesto pasta with shrimps. They had so much shrimp in the dish and they were delicious! I ordered the Blackened grilled fish with vegetables and rice. I think they could have used a little more seasoning for the fish. Veggies were done just right and fish was not overcooked. The lava flow drink looked quite different but was also delicious. Lastly, we had the lilikoi crème brulee. I loved it since it was lightly sweet and tangy. One must try it if you like lilikoi. Service was excellent. She was very attentive and friendly. IMHO Captain Jack's was formally located on Front Street overlooking the iconic Lahaina Banyan Tree. It is now located on the Sands of Kahana resort property. We made it a priority to visit Captain Jack's this visit. The open-aired restaurant overlooks the resort pool. If I were swimming in or lounging around the pool, I would not like having an audience of diners looking at me...but that's just me. LOL We shared the Calico Jack's Burger, "fresh 6.5 oz. certified Angus beef, bacon, cheddar, toasted brioche bun, lettuce, tomato, red onion, thousand island, mayo, and fries", $24, and an order of Jack's wings, "6 chicken wings, celery, carrots, sweet Thai chili", $18, plus one 22 oz. Had a great meal at Captain Jack's Island Grill and would definitely come back again. The mac salad side was creamy with just the right tang and kick, tasted classic and comforting. The standout for me was the blackened fish tacos. The fish was perfectly seasoned with bold spices and topped with a spicy salsa that added a nice kick. The portions were generous, the pieces of fish were huge, and honestly just one taco filled me up. Ended up getting two meals out of it! The coleslaw inside was crunchy and fresh, adding great texture. The tartar sauce had a really nice dill-pickle flavor that paired perfectly with the fish and tied everything together. Holy hell this place is a hidden gem! The food was off the charts delicious and our waitress Yna was the best. We have visited some places that people say are "must go to" places while on our visit to Maui and Captain Jacks Island Grill blows them out of the water. While on my bday trip, we went to several fancy smancy restaurants but our go-to restaurant that personafied the easy breezy Maui culture was Captain Jack's Island Grill. Located across the street from the first resort we stayed at, this covered outdoor gem sits beside the pool and has amazing beach water views. The food was outstanding for bar food. The BBQ ribs literally fell off the bone and were the star of the show. The crab cake sliders and the tacos were super tasty. The drinks were strong and I've heard for years how expensive Hawaii is, nope, the prices are less than Miami.. No Cut!! We entered a lively place, with some merch where we waited for a table. They were able to seat us in just a few minutes. This is an open air restaurant which tied the restaurant and a pool area together, giving the place that fun outdoor vibe. I had checked out their menu beforehand and ordered the Calico Jack's Burger, what turned out to be a pretty standard bacon cheese sandwich except it included thousand island dressing. That added a hint of sweet. For my side I got the coleslaw, a very large bowl that almost dwarfed the burger. But I began with a cup of their Me Hearties Clam Chowder. The first taste was salty, after that my taste adjusted and it was delicious. Not sure how much clam was included but I liked the creamy flavor. Had lunch here one day while staying at Sands of Kahana. The revamp of the dining room is nice. We were seated quickly and they took our order swiftly. The food here is just "ok" in my mind. I shared a Taro burger, and had a few bites of the fish and chips. The taro burger needed more cooking time in my opinion as it was slightly mushy, and there was not enough of the pineapple salsa on top. The batter on the fish and chips tasted oily, so I ate the fish and discarded the batter. The service was great, no complaints there! We had a late lunch/early dinner at Captain Jack's while on vacation in Maui. We really enjoyed our meals. The food was delicious and our waiter was very attentive and offered lots of suggestions. I wish we could have experienced Captain Jack's when it was in Lahaina town but nonetheless, the location at The Sands of Kahana Resort was a great experience and will definitely dine there again when in town. The restaurant located right next to the pool, so you might get splashed a little if seated by the wall that separates the restaurant from the pool. Captain Jack's location is definitely its strongest feature just a few steps from the ocean with a beautiful view. Unfortunately, the dining experience did not live up to the setting or the price point. I ordered the Jack Philly, and the menu clearly stated a choice of home fries or toast. When I asked about it, the server abruptly corrected me and said, "No, it's choice of potato." The interaction felt unnecessarily rude and uncomfortable, as if the frustration was being taken out on paying customers. Honestly, it felt tense enough that I thought the server might punch me while taking my order. The food itself was just okay. My omelet, which cost $27, came out burnt, and the "home fries" were simply potatoes. Add another $4 for iced tea, and the pricing felt very inflated for the quality and service received. To make matters worse, the actual pricing did not even reflect what was listed online. Overall, the oceanfront location is beautiful, but the poor service, inconsistent pricing, and underwhelming food quality made this a disappointing experience. Surprised, to say the least. read more

On travel from Southern CA, wanted to go to their new location after the fire (they used to be on Lahaina's Front Street). They are now located inside Sands of Kahana Resort. It was a nice location, right next to the pool, ocean-front, the ambiance was nice. The service was nice, too. The best part was the food. I ordered their infamous fish-n-chips, my husband ordered the tacos trio. Both choices were excellent - highly recommend. Unlike mainland fish, the whole fish filet chunk (not pieces of fish glued together by batter) was nicely breaded & oh so crispy! Loved the freshness of the fish, too! The tacos tasted great, too! My favorite restaurant of my family's trip to Hawaii for the simplest of reasons. First, the menu has a wide variety of items to please everyone. A larger menu than many places in Hawaii, there is no fighting among family members as to whether they can find something on the menu they will eat. We had two kinds of tacos, fish and chips, and the Reuben of the sea. All were delicious. There is a good drink menu including a large variety of fun non-alcoholic drinks. Location is great. Ample free parking, a beautiful koi pond, wonderful sunset views. The fun of sitting next to the pool and watching people swim and splash. Staff was also friendly and attentive. They don't take reservations which I like. When on vacation, I like to go with the flow and not have to plan where I will eat in advance. We came around 6 pm and didn't have an issue getting a table. The Baja Fish Tacos were incredible. I added avocado for an extra fee, which just made them even better (but they would have been great without avocado too). The tortilla chips were some of the best I've had, and that's coming from someone who spent decades in the U.S. Southwest! We were on our last day in Maui and really trying to find something in a lower price range (eating out on the island definitely adds up!). They have happy hour. We'd explored most of the island earlier in the week, and since our flight wasn't until 9:35 p.m., we decided to drive down through Lahaina and look for a good spot without the high prices. We found Captain Jack's by chance. It's tucked inside a hotel, kind of hidden. You pull into the hotel driveway, and after asking the girls at the desk, they directed us down a pathway that leads right into the pool area where the restaurant is located. It is open to the public. The view is stunning ocean breeze, beautiful scenery, very peaceful. Now the food... absolutely delicious. We ordered the fish of the day so tasty and cooked perfectly. I ordered a salad with super fresh ingredients and a really good vinaigrette (no protein, just veggies, but very flavorful). I also ordered the ceviche plate, and WOW. I asked for serranos on the side because I like spicy. Hands down, absolutely amazing. We also got a ribs plate that came with potato wedges, and those wedges were delicious. We ordered two drinks, a Bloody Mary and a michelada. They weren't bad, but the tomato mix tasted more like a concentrate. I was expecting a fresh tomato base, especially since the food was so good. Still enjoyable, just not as fresh tasting as I hoped. Overall, this is definitely a place we'll return to when we come back on vacation. If you're looking for really tasty food with a gorgeous view and a lower price point compared to most places on the island, Captain Jack's is a great choice. read more

My last review was for eating in the restaurant, this one is for takeout. Very easy to book online, but not to phone in. Food was ready quickly when we went to pick up which is a bonus if you are hungry. We ordered: Fish Sandwich and fries - tasty, filling and the super chunky fat fries were delicious. It is a decent sized sandwich and the fish was cooked well Southwest Salad with chilled shrimp - a big sized salad full of crunchy lettuce, black beans, corn, avocado, onion, and baby toms with tortilla strips. I found the chipotle ranch a little tame, but that is personal taste, so I added some chipotle hot sauce, mixed it up and it was perfect. There were 4 large chilled shrimp on top, of you can order hot sauteed shrimp. A little expensive but worth it as they are definitely 2 bites if not 3 to eat The to go food was well packaged, came with tomato sauce packets and compostable cutlery and containers, was ready on time and was competitively priced.
