I found this place after the fires. I really needed to be with my community and walked in to have a glass of wine. I made friends with the people at the bar. It was truly comforting to be around others going through the harsh realities. I have to say, the owners are like family. I've been coming here since and started a membership. Now I'm fully stocked and know 1000 more facts about international wines. I enjoy all the live music and artists that come by. It's always a pleasure to visit. Best part about being a member are the tasting parties. You get to hang out on the mezzanine.

Super cute place. Great wine. I ended up buying a bottle of the chaos theory. Very bold blend. Delish. Patricia and Rae very welcoming. Come and enjoy!!

If you're looking for an unpretentious atmosphere to enjoy some good wine, Monopole is the perfect place to visit. Every staff member we have met has been kind and knowledgeable. Even when the place is super busy, they never make you feel rushed or like you're interrupting them by asking a question, asking for another pour, or submitting your answers for the blind tasting. We've been here twice on the Blind Tasting nights and we were very nervous the first time but they provide a good guide and let you discover the wine yourself with your group. In addition to fun events, they also have a wide variety of delicious and unique wine! I would highly recommend a visit to Monopole and expect it to be very casual, chill, and fun!

It was such a great surprise to visit Monopole. It had only recently been in my bookmarks via yelp, but i'm happy I took a chance and had a great time for the bit of time I spent there. Arrived during the day at around 2pm on 4th of July and surprisingly they were open with limited hours so i took advantage of the holiday and headed in. I took a seat at the bar and hung out with the bartender and other patrons (who were already having a GREAT time). Everyone was super friendly and was even offered a glass of champagne by a couple who had bought a bottle. This place definitely has a Cheers -esque vibe. People mentioned that they come on a normal basis and I can totally understand why. Totally chill and comfortable vibe. I had a little orange wine (very different for me, as Im a red wine girl, but it was hot + I wanted to try something new) totally delicious and refreshing. Super cute little hour spent at Monopole! One of these days, I want to head in and experience the fun all over again.

Great wine. The owners and staff are AMAZING!

Phenomenal place right next to the Pasadena Playhouse! The owner and employees are SO WELCOMING! If you want a low key place to grab a glass and try some wine, this is a great place to visit. The inside is so comfy and the wine selection is good! No name brand, holier-than-thou nonsense going on here with either the wine brands nor the people who work here. You can also rent this place out. Ask the owner how! It's reasonable and a fantastic value!

Wow, must be new owners? Very friendly and great wines, great AC made for a nice place to chill and have a chilled Rose or a Sauvignon Blanc!

Do they have a good selection of sweet wines (dessert wines)? Also, do we need to book a reservation for wine tasting?

I asked the same question this past Thursday. The wines are organized by regions, so the sweet wines were within each region. The helpful store staff pointed out the individual sweet wines for me.

This bar is tucked inside Vroman's Bookstore (already one of the most charming and iconic bookstores in the area) so the entire experience feels like stepping into a warm, literary universe. You can browse for a new book, take in the bookstore's atmosphere, and then walk straight into the bar. Honestly, it's the perfect outing. What makes 1894 truly special is how intentionally it celebrates literature. Everything in the bar pays homage to the bookstore. The drink menu is full of clever, book-inspired names. You'll find cocktails like Pride and PearJudice Pride, Fifty Shades of Earl Grey, and other fun literary twists. Every drink feels like a little wink to readers, writers, and book lovers, and it adds such a unique charm to the experience. The vibe is super quaint and warm, dim lighting, and a creative atmosphere that makes you want to stay for hours. The wine is on the pricier side ($19-$21 per glass), but the quality delivers. Customer service was excellent. One of the bartenders spent time chatting with us. He pointed out a chalk artwork behind the bar a dramatic portrait he drew himself featuring expressive, literary-style faces, like Edgar Allan Poe, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, etc. It fits perfectly with the creative, bookish aesthetic of the bar. If you're into books, wine, and unique experiences, 1894 is a spot you absolutely can't miss. Perfect for a date, a solo unwind-with-a-book moment, or a fun night with friends who appreciate a good story and a great drink.

Our waiter was incredibly passive and at times it felt like we were being completely ignored. He would attend to tables around us but never checked in with us, had what seemed like a limited knowledge of the menu, and offered a half assed apology at the end of the night. The table next to us was clearly someone of importance, because they kept getting "gifted" foods, cheeses, drinks, etc. - which is fine, but only magnified our poor service. We also saw our food and beverages as well as other tables food and beverages be delivered to the wrong tables. My fiances sorbet was given to the special table next to us, but they had already had their dessert, and so the wait staff left with it and a minute later delivered it to our table melted. There was one staff member that was wonderful, and it seemed like he was a busboy who was filling in for our waiter (sorry I did not get his name) but he was very kind, personable, and would be the reason we come back, aside from the great food. There was also no acknowledgement of the special occasion we were celebrating, which is a minor thing but at other restaurants it's usually never missed and helps make for a nice experience especially when we mark that we are here celebrating an anniversary. All in all it was a disappointing experience. We may return for the food in the future, because it was excellent, but the service needs to be worked on.

Don't know much about their parking situation, but I found street parking right in the front. They also do delivery, and 3rd party orders. My first time, but definitely not the last. Was so pleased with their hospitality. If I didn't happen to be in the area, I probably would have missed this beautiful gem. Glad I saw it and walked in. They have some nice decor inside but I decided to sit on their lovely patio. Thank you everyone, and keep up the good work!

This review is solely about the coffee. I can't speak to the food…read more Before getting to the coffee, I have to say the ambience is just overwhelming and not relaxing--to me! I love minimalist spaces, and this is the exact opposite. This is probably just my own OCD personality that misses Steve Jobs and his black turtlenecks. The staff, however, is very nice! Okay, now the coffee, which is what my rating is based on. The latte was a small step up from Starbucks and had an odd taste that I couldn't quite place. My wife couldn't finish hers. The drip coffee was barely above lukewarm and just didn't taste good. Again, it was hard to put my finger on exactly what was wrong with it, but it didn't taste particularly fresh. I noticed the bag of beans on the counter was roasted on 6/30 and marked down on clearance. Anyway, it's probably a perfectly fine place if you're not obsessed with excellent black coffee or high-quality espresso drinks. The space is large, there's lots of outdoor seating, and the staff is nice. I just wish I'd known going in that the coffee wasn't very good, so I'm writing this review for the other people out there who are equally insufferable about their coffee.
