It's one of those spots that locals kind of want to keep to themselves but end up telling all their friends about anyway. It's tucked into this little complex that honestly just keeps getting better: you've got Hippo for dinner, Triple Beam for casual pizza, Go Get Em Tiger for coffee, and Kitchen Mouse just around the corner. The vibe is relaxed but thoughtful -- kind of like the shop itself. The wine selection here is so good. It's not just the usual suspects -- they've got bottles you probably haven't seen before, but everything feels really well-picked, never pretentious. Prices? Super fair. Love this place, the staff are so cool, and the crowd that shows up for wine tastings and events are great. It's a little undiscovered, which is always so special, particularly in Highland Park. I find it hard to believe that I have not reviewed Highland Park Wine. I've been coming here since they opened and would frequent their weekly Wednesday wine tastings. It was $15 for three tastings plus charcuterie and focaccia from Triple Beam Pizza. I'd always purchase a bottle or two of whatever was my favorite that evening. (On my last visit I was told the tastings will be returning soon.) Inside the shop you'll find a large variety of organic, natural, and biodynamic wines, in addition to a limited selection of small batch spirits, craft beer, cider, & sake. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to assist. What's great is you can grab a slice of pizza from Triple Beam, purchase a bottle of vino, and sit out on their dog friendly patio and enjoy. (They even have a water bowl for your pup.) My friend and I came here on Wednesday night for their wine Wednesday happy hour deal! They have a select 3 wines (red, white, rose) and it's $20 for a tasting flight of the 3 or $10 for a glass of one. While you can't choose any wines besides those, it's a good deal and we enjoyed all the wines we tried! The staff was super friendly and gave us the background for each wine we tried. It's standing room only with a few tables throughout the wine shop so it can get a bit crowded and might not be the best for large groups. This is a fantastic wine shop! The ambiance is really chill and laid back. The staff are EXTREMELY knowledgeable and friendly, so if you aren't sure what you're looking for you can give them some parameters and they'll help you find a great selection. While it's primarily a wine shop, they also have a fridge with cans of beer available for purchase. On Wednesday evenings from 5-8 they have wine tastings for $20 each, which is a fun option to try some smaller batch wines you may not otherwise! It's a fun atmosphere. read more

Ran into Joe, (co-owner of Highland Park Wine) on Figueroa-asking him randomly if he knew where to buy some beers. He was so helpful and kind, I gave him a pocket knife, then trucked over to order pizza at Triple Beam (fennel sausage and pretty darn good) and hit the shop. Well sorted and creatively selected wines, spirits and beers, yet ultra democratically organized and a helpful pro ready to assist. Bought some great Mezcal, wine, beers and carried the treasures back for lunch at my daughter's new pad in this hip and very welcoming barrio. Second time in two weeks - having lived over in Eagle Rock for about 6 months, I finally found this little gem and I'm hooked! Can't wait to try the pizza next door too. Also, tbh: you had me at pickup/curbside only! Absolutely thrilled to see a business being so cautious and caring for customers and employees. I first found them because we needed to celebrate something suddenly on a Friday and I knew we needed curbside pickup. I selected two perfectly priced bottles of sparkling wine and the only IPAs they had left (they have a small but delicious selection of quality beer). I used the online ordering through their website and it was efficient and accurate in terms of supply. It took me forever to actually get to this spot at first having not really been to this side of HP before. If coming from York, once you're down Figueroa, turn left on 60th and then Immediate right behind the CVS down the alley and you'll see the red paint, they have a petite parking lot or if you're quick for curbside maybe you can be in the alley for a minute. Anyways you can't really make a left on 59th to get to the alley so turn on 60th and make your life easy if coming from York! As others mentioned you can also park on Fig. There is a table blocking you from the store, if you're there for curbside then just tell 'em your name & be on your way or they have some instructions to help you out. They're clearly top notch, prices are perfectly comparable with the big box stores, and with a much better curated collection. The second time they had way more beers, so we got a nice selection and I was low on whisky so picked a moderate priced Japanese whisky. The gentleman assembling my order was pretty pleased with my raucous assortment for a Tuesday, but that's the way we gotta live these days! Anyways I plan on trying to come back here whenever possible bc lord knows I need plenty of wine these days. read more

I thought it was important to update my wine loving friends on Yelp that they recently launched an online shop! You can still call if you want to (and the staff there has only given me lovely recs), but if you're wanting to peruse what's available a bit more, the online shop is great. I ordered two bottles over the weekend and they gave me a free Eric Junker "lavate las manos" poster (perfect for these COVID times) with my order. I'd been eyeing that exact poster for a while now and am over the moon about it! This is where I come to buy wine for guys I'm trying to impress. You know, those A+ guys who deserve the best because they are mature and have a refined palate, and for whom no grocery store wine will suffice. Yeah, I don't come here often. When I do come here, I'm always impressed by how personable the employees are, and how clean and well-stocked it is. I have never left without every employee making sure I had what I needed, and more importantly, I've never been disappointed with a wine I've purchased here. For the last two years I've been partial to unfiltered wine since a friend of mine introduced it to me. I make a point to search for unfiltered wine at every wine shop I visit, and if the shop doesn't have any in its inventory I don't usually return. If you're looking for "natural/raw wine," they have it here. The last time I came here I picked up a safe, classic orange wine, and tried out a pinot grigio (both unfiltered). Matt B. and I spent our Sunday evening at Highland Park Wines, eating pizza and drinking wine with our friends and their baby (the baby didn't drink wine, but he did eat a surprising amount of spicy pizza). This wine shop is in the same little complex as Triple Beam Pizza, and there's some overlap in the ownership. Enough, anyway, that you can bring your pizza and dine in at HPW while enjoying good wine at retail prices. The shop is attractive and welcoming and very hip, opened by the same people as Silverlake Wine, and definitely a powerful horseman in the gentrification apocalypse. (I overheard a white woman at the register commenting that Highland Park was like a mini Silver Lake, and it made me wince. I'm a total moth to the flame when it comes to precious trendy shops and restaurants, but like, people do know that Highland Park isn't just a yuppie theme park on short stretches of York and Figueroa, yes?) It boasts a huge, curated selection of wines from all over the world, with tons of options at every price point. They're beautifully arranged, easy to browse and just nice to look at, with bottles stacked like library books, in ten-foot-high shelving units. There's also a well stocked liquor section. There's no seating in HPW--fair enough, as it is a wine shop, not a picnic hall--but we were able to set up camp at the back counter, which I'm guessing is used for wine tastings. The woman on staff was totally accommodating, and she helped us pick a couple of bottles to drink with our meals. Our friends are going to Sonoma soon, so we asked for Sonoma reds. She suggested the B. Kosuge 2015 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir and the Pax Mahle Jet Set Jungle, a 2014 red blend. We took her recommendations, and she set us up with glasses and poured our first tastes. Both bottles were great, and they cost us like $55 total. Would've been much more expensive at any restaurant. We had a lovely time here, and bought a few bottles to take home on our way out. This time, I got help from the man on staff (I think it was just the two of them Sunday), and he was also super nice and knowledgeable. We haven't gotten a chance to drink our purchases yet, but I have no doubt that they'll be delicious. This has always been my go-to wine shop in Highland Park, and as much as I miss popping into their shop in person, their delivery service throughout Covid has been a god send! I trust their recommendations completely and don't think I've ever gotten a bad wine from them. I love that I can give them a price range, let them know what I like, and they'll drop off a box a few hours later! They've also been doing these great posters (in partnership with the Triple Beam / Hippo team?) that they've given along with the delivery on occasion and they're awesome. Attended their Wed night wine tasting tonight 11/23/19 and really enjoyed it. You get three generous wine pours with some delicious focaccia from Triple Beam/Hippo with some cheese and olives. We really enjoyed our time there. Afterwards, I purchased a bottle of one of their tasting wines and a four pack of Hoxie Wine and set the wine down in front of Triple Beam Pizza for a minute and the bag ended up disappearing. Otto from the wine shop was incredibly kind and demonstrated tremendous customer service by replacing both wines. He didn't have to but he did and I am so so grateful. The staff we ran into on a Saturday night (esp. Otto) were super cool to us and provided exceptional customer service. I love going into this little shop. During the current lockdown I just ordered complimentary delivery since alcohol is an essential supply. I like how the space is laid out in such a way that you can comfortably peruse and check out things you might not otherwise discover. It's very neat and orderly but yet a very extensive selection of wines- somehow not overwhelming. We always pick up some spirits or cider also - not strictly wine. Well, to contradict a previous review, this place is absolutely open and life is good. If you've been to Silverlake Wine, think a shrunken version. Like a baby brother. If you haven't been to Silverlake, here is the layout. The walls have racks of high quality, great priced wine. The center is lined with shelves of high quality, great priced wine. They also have glass tops that double as wine glass resting tables. And in the back, they're pouring $5 glasses of, you guessed it, high quality, great priced wine. They do flights on Wednesdays. We came on a Tuesday. Grabbed a glass that the young, helpful, knowledgeable associate recommended. He knew the winemaker and was spot on with his description of the wine. We began to browse the racks of wine. German pinots, Italian wines, and even local LA wines. I grabbed a bottle of Paso pinot. Wonderwall. Looked intriguing and was priced nicely at $21. Associate walks by. "Great pinot. I know the winemaker. He makes great........." Ya right buddy. Give it a rest. Looked it up online on the way home, sure enough, there was the name he dropped. I'm currently drinking the wine as I'm writing this. It tastes like a $40 bottle. Almost like a Syrah. Rich, peppery pinot that has a smooth, clean finish. We'll be back for more. Nothing is more important than a first impression. Great service and great wine. Don't be deterred by the tucked away location. Find it. It's about to be adjoined by a new Italian restaurant and is currently behind a pizza joint. Tip. Order at one of these places, have it delivered, sit outside, and eat while drinking some great wine. Inside, you'll find a large selection of reds, whites, and roses ranging from 11-120 dollars. Most fall in the 15-25 range. They even have a small selection of spirits and beer. The best part is you can bring in your pizza and pop open a bottle to share or partake in a glass of a bottle already opened. I've done this probably too many times already. The employees are super knowledgeable and helpful, giving suggestions based on what you've liked in the past. I'm always surprised how much they know about so many wines. This is an excellent wine shop that is strategically positioned right next to one of the greatest pizza shops of all time. What a great find in this new hipster part of town! A few months ago I tried triple beam pizzeria, and I have to say, I wasn't that impressed at first, but decided to give them another try and so glad I did cause now Im obsessed with there pizza. While I was there on a Wednesday eating their fabulous pizza I was noticing everyone around me drinking wine. Apparently on Wednesday nights from 6-9 they have a wine tasting. Who knew?!? So with that said, I decided to jump right in since I was already there enjoying their fabulous mushroom & rosemary pizza. Yummers!! They served three generous pours of three different wines. I ended up buying two of them at the end of the night. A French white Barouillet sparkling, and A sparkling Shiraz. Wowza! And Did I mention the complementary, and generous focaccia bread and cheese platter they put on the table. ?!? you are not going to find another wine tasting as good as highland park wines, so go there and see for yourself. I just recently checked this place out, and it's nice to have a wine shop that has a wide variety of French reds. They also have a good selection of other old world wines which beats out the local markets and liquor stores. Additionally they do wine tasting at the shop so feel free to go with a friend (or alone) chat with the employees, hang out a while and indulge. The employees there are friendly, sociable and can really help you choose what wines to try. I was going to a dinner party and asked the guys there what would pair well with the menu and they offered me some recommendations and even asked to work within my price range. Rude. I went to pick up a couple bottles of wine and mostly to ask for some advice as I am not a wine connoisseur. I was greeted at the "6ft apart" table, by a surly gentleman, who seemed put out that I was there. I started to explain that I hadn't placed a phone order yet but that I would like to buy some wines. He responded with "huh I can't hear you" so I stepped back and pulled my mask away from my face, making sure that my mouth and nose were still covered but holding it out in front of me. It was still a 6 feet distance between us and him with a mask and shield on. He rudely said to me "you're going to need to put your mask on" in a condescending tone. I responded with "I'll go somewhere else I don't need to be treated this way". It is unfortunate incident because I wanted to order several bottles of wine in the future from this local store.
