I don't understand why the ratings are not higher. This is my favorite local diner and one of the most consistent local places to eat, generally. The portions are generous, the staff is always warm and friendly and I dream about their tuna melt. It's a classic diner feel inside. but they have some really nice unexpected menu items like... hear me out... the kale salad, as a side. It's really tasty, meanwhile the classics (fries, matzoh ball soup, burgers, pancakes) are solid. And the milk shakes are fabulous every time. Stopped into Monroe Diner to try their pumpkin spice cinnamon swirl pancakes, and they were the perfect taste of fall. The pancakes were soft, fluffy, and had just the right amount of pumpkin flavor with a sweet cinnamon swirl throughout. I also tried their Western omelet, which was a great savory balance to the sweet pancakes. The portions were generous, everything came out hot, and the service was friendly. We really enjoyed our meal here. I was born and raised in Connecticut and I have been to eating diners all over the state for over 30 years. This is one of the best. Clean, friendly, and inviting. Plus, Ariel and Cassie are the best servers! We loved chatting with both of them and they both took great care of us. We got extra hot water for our tea, they checked in on us halfway through our meal, and they brought us the check just as we were about to ask for it. The portions are generous and I personally thought for the size and the quality ingredients (they make their hash from scratch in house), the prices were fair. I had the tuna melt and my boyfriend had the hash and eggs. We ordered and got our food in less than 20 minutes for reference. For those complaining about the poor/slow customer service, I have to strongly disagree as that WAS NOT our experience. The music playing was great for the background, too, with a little of everything, from the 80s through early 2010s. We will definitely be back when we return to the area, which we do quite often. read more

Ordered the "crispy" salmon wrap. Came with fries. Tasted okay but nothing about it was crispy. Fries were hot (disappointing shoestring ) but undercooked and soggy. Server plunked food down along with an empty ketchup bottle (the cheap mongrel brand) walked away and NEVER came back. I ended up getting another ketchup myself and flagged another server down for water. Server eventually returned to take my plate asked if I was done. I said yes and then she never brought me a check. I finally went up to the register where 4 staff persons were congregating and chatting and asked for it myself. NEVER again. Also as noted in other reviews very limited menu. On 5/25/2024 at apx 8:15 we decided to try the Monroe Diner for the first time. Very glad we did. We were greeted and seated quickly. Celal B was our server and he took our order in a timely manner. Hubby ordered the Western Omelette and water and I had the BLT combo with a mimosa. Both arrived very fast and were absolutely delicious. Johnny had a side of hash browns which we were told were frozen, but the cook knows his/her way around the kitchen as they tasted fresh and even homemade and I had an excellent side of a single pancake. Wowza! Served with butter and warm syrup. The prices are reasonable, restaurant and bathrooms are all clean and tidy. Go with confidence. Next time I will take pictures. My husband and I are from New Haven. We were in Monroe for business and decided to stop for breakfast. We've eaten at many diners but this one was the BEST! The waitress was wonderful and after telling her this was our first time, she gave us a wonderful cinnabun pancake on the house to bring to our son! we'll be back!!! read more

My husband and I have been coming to this diner for years and it was a nice place with good food. We were there yesterday and the service with the waiter was good but the food was not good. I feel that the place has gone down hill in the past few years, maybe since COVID. The prices have gone up but the food has gone down. When we had a couple of desserts they were frozen not home-made. They used to have a choice of a few desserts and now only four. I will never have a dessert there again. read more

Let's start with the good. The food here is good. They have well made omelets and the corn beef hash is tasty. This is a nice diner and feels like a small town place. My issue is with the limited menu and the service is just not good. The last time I was there two of the servers were joking about currently being sick while at work. Our breakfast tour continues...Today we happened upon this place after a traffic detour. The place was nearly empty but its a cute place and the waitresses were very nice. The only issue and it was small is that my second cup of coffee was only lukewarm, I did hear the people next to us mentioning it to the waitress so I didn't mention it. I did hear the waitresses talking about how one of them forgot to hit the button on the machine. It was an honest mistake and could happen to anyone. Overall the food was good and the portions were just right. It was an average breakfast menu, nothing spectacular but I would give them a shout out for the Gluten Free French toast that they have on the menu. You don't see that very often. Went to have dinner with my family and tried to get a to go order for my brother who was on his way home from work. The server forgot to put it in after we ordered at the beginning of the meal. The owner said the cooks left at 7 and there was nothing they could do to remedy since they couldn't cook or put the grill on. They offered a free desert but that left my brother without dinner. The server Michael was really generous and covered our drinks and soup to try to remedy the situation. Overall not ideal and not the first time this has happened - they need to be more clear when they close and the hours of operation because the cooks leaving while customers are still eating is a little outrageous especially cleaning and rushing us out of the restaurant at night. Came here last week for some breakfast. Ordered two scrambled eggs, bacon, and rye toast. For $12, this was well worth it. Despite it being $5 to add bacon, there was plenty of bacon on my plate to justify the price. Additionally, the rye toast was especially good here. It was toasted perfectly, and had some good caraway seeds to amp up the flavour. The eggs were also great. Nice and fluffy and cooked perfectly. Diners have a tendency to overcook their eggs, leaving them stringy. But these were far better. The service was also fast and friendly. Everyone here is always nice and welcoming. I first frequented this place for many tears, when owned by, "Tony", now deceased. What a difference in ownership and the mood of this place! The guy who has his hair up in a,"bun" is a joke. Great classic diner experience. Plenty of parking and seating. We had a great meal, and the wait staff were very helpful and attentive. The meals are at reasonable prices and offer usual diner combinations as well as Greek influenced plates. Service is quick and the staff are very nice. UPDATE: It's a year later and I had to take a star away. They have gotten less considerate of their customers by blasting music THEY like through the restaurant. I mean, I have to say that I've never experienced this in ANY diner anywhere else. Especially considering that diners serve breakfast, why in the world would they blast music loudly throughout the place? As to the kind of music, suffice it to say that it feels exactly like it does at a hairdresser's salon--lots of pop music. I hate to rate is so low and I have had worse but..I really am not a fan. I am not a major diner lover to begin with but I've been here several times in the last few years. The last time I was in was with a friend and we both got grilled cheese sandwiches. They were OK. I mean there was nothing wrong with them. But it was a weekend evening and it just was gloomy feeling. The place has no ambiance at all, no character to it. Service is usually OK so it isn't that. But there is a general lackluster feel about the whole place and we didn't linger. I'm not even sure if we got coffee. The decor really needs an update and they need to do SOMETHING with it to make the atmosphere more inviting. Prices are OK and there is not anything wrong with the menu. I only go here for my favorite salad. The chopped Cobb. It's delicious and they have the best Green Goddess dressing ever. I never eat here otherwise so I can't review other food, but it's new and clean inside. The staff always seems friendly and there are always people here. They are super quick when I call the order in and it's a great size salad. The price is steep at $16.50 for a salad? But it is big like I said and delicious but definitely pricey. read more

Took 12 minutes for our waiter to come over, take our beverage and food order...then another 12 minutes, 10:04pm, for him to bring the coffee we both ordered. 7 minutes later/10:11pm (half hour after we were seated), our food arrived. I would think, hope, slow service is not typical. Food was ok... Tuna Melt on rye (which was firm and NOT soggy) was chock full of delicious tuna (took half home, very filling)....fries were relatively pale and flavorless and could have been fried another minute or too...so ask if you want them crispy/well done. (We did not send them back as it might have taken too long as our waiter was too busy to check with us and it was late.) Grilled chicken Club was fine; Hearty. *Bacon on it was perfectly crisped.) Cole slaw, pre-made, drippy, store bought, disappointing..but certainly could have been worse. Not once did our waiter ask if we wanted more coffee (or dessert or anything else, not that we did)...he was too busy elsewhere. (Water must be asked for; like most non-fine dining eateries today, it is not automatically delivered...which is ok; just know to ask for it.) I would go back to give it another try. The food wasn't bad but it wasn't anything to write home about either. Biggest problem was the overall experience: I ordered a turkey platter with baked potato at around 6:30, only to be told they were out of baked potatoes. So I subbed to potato pancakes when given the option. When the meal came out, no potato pancakes. I was told they were out, and I could either have fries or hash browns. I picked hash browns. They came out a few minutes later, soggy. The server apologized and said "we're closing at 7:00 and the kitchen already started cleaning everything up so they couldn't crisp these up for you. If they're not okay, let me know and we'll get you something else." Um...you messed up my first 3 choices and the kitchen is closing...exactly WHAT else could you get me!?!?? Lol. In December 2021 (during the big surge in covid that occurred), the waiters and waitresses that served us were not wearing masks despite having to lean over right next to our faces to serve us our coffee and breakfast. When I mentioned it to someone there who seemed to be in authority, she said it's not mandated so that's why. When I said they should wear them considering the surge, esp. when they are leaning in so close to customers, I was told again, well it's not mandated. How about some common sense? There was none. Also, they list a few specialty coffees and milks on their menu, but in past visits they weren't available because the person who knew how to make it, they said, wasn't there right now and no one else knows how to work the machine. I love this place. Great in the community and a friendly environment. We were driving around, got a little peckish and stopped for a snack. They treated us and our new pup like kings and queen. I have been in town long enough to remember the old diner which was great. When it reopened it wasn't as good but it was an average diner. Went about a month ago and the final straw was they don't even make home fries anymore with breakfast - they serve those frozen potato strings like you would get in a school cafeteria. At $15 a person for breakfast you can do better - I was embarrassed for them. They said that they switched to the frozen crap because the potatoes they ordered from their supplier were often moldy. Get a new supplier then - don't serve garbage to your customers. Super nice people and the eggs and coffee were fine. Service was slow and it wasn't full. I guess they can get away with this now that Kings is gone and there is no competition. read more

Really big difference from the early days of operation. Service was excellent and the diner was spotlessly clean! Food was fine - again, typical diner fare. I had the gyro platter and it was edible. The others in my party enjoyed their selections more. It is in a convenient location with plenty of parking. read more
