There aren't a lot of options to eat in this part of the state, but Monroe City has a great one right here! They've got a huge menu and a pretty nice buffet. The salad bar is a little lacking, but they've got plenty of meat, veggies, pizza, and dessert. The service was good and they kept the buffet well stocked. I stayed in Monroe city for several days in order to visit an aunt in Shelbina. I enjoyed breakfast here every morning, the service was outstanding the food was perfect. Not many people can make poached eggs, medium and get it right! Prices are reasonable, atmosphere very nice and the owner is on site! 11 am the buffet opens and looked delicious. We ordered breakfast and everything was cooked perfectly. Crispy bacon, tender hash browns with crispy top, French Toast fluffy and not soggy, eggs with the whites completely cooked. Always asking if we needed anything else. The ladies working the front of house were very welcoming and accommodating of my requests (e.g., adding jalapenos to a bacon double cheeseburger). Speaking of that burger, it was ginormous, and absolutely delicious. Almost too big for one very hungry person to eat... Almost. The interior is casual and homey. My husband and I ate here for breakfast on our way through on the interstate. I had the pony shoe and my husband got one of the skillets and they were both delicious. Drinks are in very large cups and they even offered us to-go cups as we left. We heard them say soft serve is complementary with every meal. Staff was extremely friendly. Everyone is casual and relaxed, and the eating area was clean, but the food wasn't something I would go out of my way for... I tried the buffet, and it was pretty much just homemade comfort food that sat out awhile... Anyhow, my girlfriends daughter is local and we are here for her wedding. She frequents this place with her kids and new hubby so obviously we ate there. Very good food! Several of us had the catfish dinner with baked potato and my gf had the Reuben with fries. Extremely good prices! Can't bring myself to give 5 stars because the place wasn't 'real' clean. This is a wonderful family-owned and operated restaurant. I throughly enjoyed my French Dip. The fries were done perfectly - battered, crispy, golden and delicious! The waiters were friendly, attentive, welcoming and pleasant. We did not feel rushed at all. The place got pretty busy for lunch but it didn't bog their service time down. The only surprising part was when I went to the restroom and quickly discovered it shared an non-insulated exterior wall. It was frigid!!! That'll happen when it's in negative digits outside. Oh my! This is like wandering into Mayberry, circa 1965. So many good things to eat, so many smiling customers! There's a lunch buffet daily, an incredible value, which includes soup, salad bar, three entrees, vegetables and potatoes, and dessert for $8. There's also breakfast anytime and many delicious short-order sandwiches. The day we visited daily specials included meatloaf (a sandwich or dinner), ribeye sandwich, philly chicken and a western burger. Many entrees are available half-sized (not for me!). People here are really, really nice: they seem to know most of their customers. I felt as if I'd stumbled into an alternate universe where everyone is pleasant, well-behaved, and well-fed. read more

The waitress told us the sausage gravy was grandmother's recipe and the best ever......she was right! The gravy was flavorful but not too spicy with chunks of great country sausage and a smooth creamy base. The biscuits were light and fluffy and complemented the gravy perfectly. The eggs were done correctly over medium as ordered and the coffee was decent. The friendly atmosphere and service made breakfast here a pleasure.
